INTRODUCTION: WINTER SOLSTICE 2012 AND THE MAYAN CALENDAR
For quite a few years now there has been a great deal of discussion of December 21, 2012 as the end of the Mayan calendar. There is some debate about whether this is the actual date of the calendar as you will see in these articles. I personally believe, however, that the idea of the end of the world, or the end of the earthly paradigm upon which we build our lives, would not have taken hold had there not been an energy of change that is palpable and impossible to deny.
When Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008 after 23 years in Sagittarius it began to break down (Pluto) the structures of our worldly existence (Capricorn) that were corrupt and decaying. Economic systems, centers of power - until Pluto leaves Capricorn in 2023 we will see continued breakdown of infrastructure and the underpinnings of our world which no longer fit with the expanding paradigm of human existence.
Between 2008 and this year there have been a series of planetary connections that have fostered tremendous inner change (Chiron/Neptune conjunction) and outer transformation (the cardinal alignments and the ongoing square between Uranus and Pluto). You don't have to be an astrologer to see that the world is changing and will never again be the same.
Personally, I am skeptical of the claim that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. Mayan elders say that this is very like saying our calendar ends on December 31st. But this iconic event has become the symbol of the transformation that is taking place and for that reason it is important.
The Winter Solstice chart is not particularly significant astrologically, and will not mark a particularly powerful time of planetary energy. It IS interesting that the Solstice occurs precisely at 11:11 GMT which has numerological interest as a master number. Regardless of the trigger that we use, there is no doubt that change is afoot. We can either open to transformation willingly and allow ourselves to be repatterned into the new energy, or we can resist and become stuck in fear. The choice is ours.
December continues the pattern of the past few months with a relatively quiet planetary climate. The larger planetary cycle of Uranus square Pluto is still operative (the two are still within five degrees of an exact square formation), so the process of destruction and rebuilding with new paradigms continues to apply pressure on our individual lives as well as in the global arena. But other than this, there are no major planetary challenges this month.
A harmonious trine from Saturn to Chiron continues to provide us with an opportunity to diligently work (Saturn) on healing any wounds that hold us back (Chiron) so that we can release them and emerge with new wisdom and clarity. Chiron and Neptune continue traveling together as they have for the past five years or so, never allowing us to forget that we are soul beings having a human experience.
Uranus turns direct this month so its energy is quite strong now. Uranus governs illumination and ascension, as well as the type of radical departure from the ordinary and the rigid that is occurring now. If Uranus is aspecting your personal chart you will likely experience difficulty sleeping as well as a continual pressure to liberate yourself from any area of your life which is not serving your highest good.
As December begins, the Sun is in Sagittarius and approaching an opposition to Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius. This is a double signature connecting the Sun's energy of radiance and vitality to the expansion of Jupiter and Sagittarius, but because the opposition is a potentially challenging aspect there is a sense that things may be expanding beyond our control. There is potential now for us to take in a great deal of information (Jupiter is in Gemini) and expand our world view (Jupiter/Sagittarius) as long as we refrain from becoming stuck in our beliefs. This aspect culminates on December 2nd.
Then there is a relatively long period of planetary quiet (other than lunar aspects) until December 11th when a challenging square from Mercury to Neptune can confuse (Neptune) our communication (Mercury). Mercury has just entered Sagittarius the previous day and our thinking process is more expansive and resistant to rules and regulation. Under this aspect concentration can be difficult, but creativity can flood the mind and spiritual pursuits are favored.
Uranus has been in retrograde motion since July of this year and turns direct on the 13th, the day of the Sagittarius New Moon. This is a time of awakening and has the potential to open the mind to broader realizations. The New Moon is the beginning of a new lunar cycle, and under the Sagittarius influence we begin to crave travel and adventure, but also a wider view of life. Uranus unlocks the door to that expansion and opens our eyes so that we can truly see.
Uranus is said to be the "higher octave" of Mercury - it represents the higher mind, with Mercury representing the mind of the personality. A trine from Mercury to Uranus is embedded in the chart for the New Moon and ensures that the intellectual awakening taking place (Mercury/Uranus) will open up the higher doorways of conscious at the same time. A challenging square of Mercury to Chiron suggests that it may be crucial to release old hurt and soul damage in order for this awakening to occur.
Between the 16th and the 22nd of December a series of minor planetary alliances involving Venus will bring out any hidden issues in our relationships with others and make it important to find balance and harmony as well as beauty in our lives. We will be more sensitive to dissonance as well. On the 16th a challenging square from Venus to Neptune opens up the creative centers and enhances our craving for aesthetic experiences, but can also bring confusion and a lack of clarity.
An opposition from Mercury (mind) to Jupiter (ideology) on the 17th will likely bring about a big infusion of expansive confidence where our ideas and philosophies are concerned. These two are in mutual reception, with Mercury in Jupiter’s sign of Sagittarius and Jupiter in Mercury’s sign of Gemini, so information and learning are of paramount importance for a day or two. This is not an easy time for compromise or cooperation and it is best to wait until the 19th to enter into any important agreements.
A square from Venus to Chiron on the 20th may bring require that we resolve past hurts in order in order to move forward in our interactions with others. Venus is in Sagittarius now where it resists the kind of emotional processing that Chiron demands. But this is a fast-moving transit that will only last a day or so.
Meanwhile Saturn is approaching a harmonious sextile to Pluto that culminates on December 26th. A sextile is a harmonious aspect but it carries a bit more excitement than a trine which tends to be comfortable and not very active. With Saturn in a sextile to Pluto the kind of commitment (Saturn) that is required in order for deep transformational work (Pluto) to have an important impact comes more easily. This aspect will be in effect from around the 18th til the end of December.
The last Full Moon of the month occurs on December 28th and it is a powerhouse of a lunation, triggering the square between Uranus and Pluto which is moving back into formation and in Cancer, the Moon’s own sign. The Full Moon always occurs when the Moon and her instincts and emotions are opposite the Sun, representing conscious awareness. In this chart the Sun conjoins Pluto, intensifying the dramatic effect and applying pressure for deep transmutation. The Moon is opposite Pluto as well as the Sun, and the Moon is in its own sign of Cancer where the emotions are truly in ascendancy. Pluto’s influence will deeply excavate the roots of our feelings and desires and if we remain awake and present, we will learn a great deal about what lies within and underneath the filters of the conscious mind.
A Kite aspect is formed around the opposition of the Sun/Pluto and Moon, with an exact sextile from Saturn to Pluto described above, and a wider sextile from Chiron to Sun/Pluto. This forms a Grand Trine involving the Moon, Saturn and Chiron, all in water signs. Grand Trines facilitate ease and harmonious interaction between the essences of these planets and help to provide a sweet support for the intensity of the emotional processing that the Full Moon promotes.
This leads into the last aspect of the month, a harmonious sextile from Mars to Uranus that excites us into opening up to new ways of looking at the world. Mars and Uranus combine here to foster change and innovation, and with Mars in Uranus-ruled Aquarius there is a double emphasis on letting go of the past and finding ways to create an exciting future.
This is the perfect archetype for the last day of the month which takes us into the New Year.
