Terrorism Via Newspaper: the End of Pluto Through Sagittarius

A few weeks ago my daily newspaper (Sagittarius rules publishing and the media in general along with religion) contained a DVD called The Obsession, an “expose” of Islamic Sharia law.  Evidently the film was made in 2005 and was distributed to 28 million homes.

Aziz Poonawalla, my new blogging brother here on BeliefNet, reported yesterday that a mosque in Dayton, Ohio was teargassed and suggests that the spread of fear through this DVD was directly responsible. Several bloggers are researching the source of the DVD and have come up with a group called the Clarion Fund. Aziz writes,

Anyone who tries to disclaim any link between this despicable attack and the release of 20 million copies of the Obsession DVD is either a fool or a liar. That DVD was intended to bring about precisely this kind of demonization. What is most shocking about the Obsession DVD is that it is most likely funded by the very people you would think would know all too well the wages of this kind of directed hate, scapegoating, and fear-mongering.

Incidentally, it doesn’t stop here. There’s a new Islamophobic film due to be released in early October, in time for Eid al Fitr: The Third Jihad. This is a “tsunami of Islamophobia” that is clearly aimed at influencing the election in November.

Follow the links, they’re very interesting.  One links to Richard Silverstein’s blog, which supports peace between Israelis and Arabs, suggesting that the Clarion Fund is run by the Republican Jewish Coalition.  I’m old enough to remember when there were no Jewish Republicans, so that whole idea to me is bizarre enough.  But it seemed to me that the release of this DVD right before the election is meant to create fear in the minds of Americans about Barack Obama, and a quick look at their website confirmed my suspicions with the headline: Barack Obama:  Pro-Palestinian, Anti-Israel, even hostile to America.

This kind of fear (Pluto) through religion (Sagittarius) is what we’ve been dealing with over the past thirteen years, and with Pluto completing its tour through Sagittarius through December, it’s not quite finished.  The dissemination of xenophobia through the newspaper, both under the province of Sagittarius, is a terrible but fitting symbol of the conclusion of this Pluto in Sag period.

John McCain’s Erratic Behavior: An Astrological View

John McCain

John McCain

All but John McCain’s most ardent supporters are talking about McCain’s recent erratic and bizarre behavior that threatens his run for President.  In a campaign that has been more about emotional reactions than a clear look at issues, it doesn’t take much to throw a campaign off balance.  Republicans did not care for McCain to start with, then with his selection of Sarah Palin he became a star.  Now that the bloom is off Palin’s rose after her only interviews reveal her utter lack of understanding of world affairs, McCain has to appear that much more presidential.

The LA Times writes, “David Keene, head of the American Conservative Union, said some of McCain’s responses over the last 10 days were “goofy” and “just don’t make a whole lot of sense.” ”  In the same article, John Weaver, McCain’s former campaign manager, is quoted: ”It was all very dramatic, but maybe the American public is tired of drama after the last eight years,  John needs to demonstrate he has a steady hand. He needs to be a bit more measured.”

That is not McCain’s style, and we can see that in his birthchart.  Mars in Leo can be flamboyantly (Leo) aggressive (Mars), and McCain’s Mars is squared by Uranus which exacerbates the situation.  Uranus is the revolution – the radical and the rebel.  The challenging aspects of Mars and Uranus often shows an individual whose rebellion cannot be contained, and unless they balance those energies within themselves there is always a fight lurking just under the surface.

McCain’s progressed Moon aspected his progressed Mars a month ago, and that influence is just now waning.  For someone with the underlying anger that McCain has, the irritation of Mars to the Moon can add gasoline to the flame.  In addition, transiting Chiron (wounding and healing) has been forming a challenging aspect (square) to his Sun, the second phase of which occurred in early September.  This can be a painful time when our old hurts and painful emotions are exposed, ideally so that they can be healed.  It can also bring health problems, and the droopy eye that McCain has exhibited recently has given rise to rumors of a stroke, or Bells Palsy.

The last big planetary event in McCain’s life right now is the double transit of Saturn and Uranus to the retrograde Saturn/Venus opposition in his chart, a point that denotes the potential for low self-esteem  (Perhaps this is why McCain paid a Hollywood makeup artist over $5,000 of taxpayer-funded money recently.)  This Saturn/Venus opposition is part of a Mutable Grand Cross in his chart, of which I wrote in my earlier article:

A Grand Cross is a challenging aspect in which four planets make 90 degrees to each other, with two pairs of planets in opposition to each other. Typically there is a buildup of tension with this configuration which promotes change and transformation within the individual, but with the Mutable Grand Cross this energy is never focused and tends to create distress and tension within the individual unless there is a motivating force that provides momentum. Without such a force this person will tend to waffle and become distracted. At his core, Mr. McCain has not yet resolved his inner sense of failure expressed through his retrograde Saturn.

Because McCain does not have a strong core of conviction, planetary transits over the Grand Cross can shake him even more than they would for others.  Uranus has been transiting over these points for the past couple of years and currently is sitting right on McCain’s Saturn, exacerbating the restlessness of his natal Uranus/Mars square.  Uranus wants to shake up all things Saturn in his chart: goals, rules, structures.   This would be great for a real maverick, but not a maverick who wants to be president.  Transiting Saturn is moving into alignment to oppose Uranus in the sky and Saturn in his chart, and that will be the real challenge.

Libra New Moon!

New Moons are exciting times of renewal and new beginnings, and the Moon was new in Libra at 4 am EDT today.  Each month we are initiated into the mysteries of the signs in zodiacal order, and following the Virgo mystery that was illuminated by the New Moon eclipse on August 30, we find ourselves being opened to the Libran quest for beauty, harmony, and a balance in our relationships with others.

Relationships are highlighted now, and with Venus, ruler of the New Moon, currently in Scorpio there is likely to be passion and intensity (Scorpio) in those relationships and the possibility for dissonance.  Venus and Scorpio have nothing in common – these signs are inconjunct (30 degrees apart) and they don’t understand each other.  We must face the truth about our relationships (Scorpio) while working to achieve balance within them (Libra).  This extends to all kinds of partnerships in our life, and anywhere that we relate to others.

With this New Moonhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif we begin to see the opposition between Saturn (form and structure) and Uranus (chaos and innovation) moving towards their alignment that will be exact on election day. The Libra New Moon connects the energy of the Sun and the Moon – the conscious mind (Sun) and the emotional instincts (Moon) to ask “Where do the structures of my life that I depend on (Saturn) need to be altered so that they will better serve my authentic self (Uranus)?”

Mercury is retrograde, and at the Libra New Moon we are looking backwards to reprocess events in our life in a way that is more balanced and harmonious (Libra) than they were before.  Mercury trines Neptune exactly now, offering us a doorway to see our ideals (Neptune) clearly and express them in a creative and inspirational fashionhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif.

Look at your own chart to see which house the New Moon falls in – this is the area of your life where you have the potential to begin anew.  If you would like to like discussing this with others, please join the thread on our fledgling Astrological Musings group here at Beliefnet.

The New Army Mind-Meld

mind-meld

mind-meld

Shall we file this under Chiron conjunct Neptune in Aquarius, where the boundaries between technology (Aquarius) and the human mind/body connection (Chiron) are blurred beyond distinction?  And the mutual reception between Uranus in Pisces and Neptune (ruler of Pischttp://astrodynamics.net/astrologicalmusings/wp-admin/post-new.php?unfoldmenu=1es) in Aquarius (ruled by Uranus)?  The boundaries between technology and humanity continue to dissolve in a very Neptunian/Piscean way.

The Army has given a team of University of California researchers a $4 million grant to

study the foundations of “synthetic telepathy.” But unlike old-school mind-melds, this seemingly psychic communication would be computer-mediated. . . .

All across the military, there’s interest in translating thoughts into computer code, and vice versa. Darpa-funded researchers have taught monkeys how to control robotic limbs with their thoughts. Defense contractor Northrop Grumman is building binoculars that tap the unconscious mind. Honeywell has built a system that monitors pre-conscious nueral firings, to help pick out targets in satellite imagery. The JASONs, the Pentagon’s premiere scientific advisory board, has warned of the dangers of enemies

implanted with brain-computer interfaces. And the Defense Intelligence Agency just released a report, saying the military needs to spend more on neuroscience – up to and including “mak[ing] the enemy obey our commands.”

Ever since Uranus was discovered in the late 1700s, its influence has been transforming our technological development.  As we leave the age of Pisces and move into the Aquarian age, humans and machines are likely to be every more interdependent.

The Astrology Of Henry Paulson

Henry Paulson

Henry Paulson

Financial astrologer Ray Merriman said last week in our workshop that Aries Henry Paulson and Sagittarian Ben Bernanke did a fine job during the big expansion of the Pluto in Sagittarius era, but that they don’t have a clue how to deal with the contraction of Pluto in Capricorn.  This is an interesting point, but the chart of Henry Paulson (3/28/1946, Palm Beach Florida, time unknown) is even more interesting in light of the current financial debacle.

Paulson’s Aries Sun is exactly opposed by Neptune, describing someone whose Aries dynamism is obscured by the mists of Neptunian compassion and spirituality.  Paulson, former CEO of Goldman Sachs, is also one of the largest donors to environmental causes and he is a dedicated Christian Scientist.  Mercury in his chart is conjunct his Sun, indicator of extreme intelligence, and therefore also opposed by Neptune.  Moreover, Mercury is retrograde in his chart which suggests that he finds it difficult to feel that he has made his views understood; combined with the opposition to Neptune this is a challenging aspect for communication skills.  Still, Paulson has achieved great success despite these odds, possibly thanks to a Grand Trine in air planets that includes a trine from Neptune to Uranus, facilitating the flow of information (Uranus/air) in a creative and flowing way (Neptune).

However, Paulson has an impetuous side as shown by a square of retrograde Jupiter to Mars in his chart.  Jupiter is expansive and seeks to aggrandize the other planet in a challenging aspect like the square, and Mars, being our impulse and drive, can become reckless and impulsive when squared by Jupiter.  Saturn conjuncts Paulson’s Mars and squares Jupiter, putting somewhat of a damper on this impulse and giving him the discipline to have achieved his goals, but his tendency will always be to act first and think about it later. The New York Times quotes Allan Hubbard, his colleague in the Bush administration, saying ”Hank is just the most hyperactive, get-it-done kind of guy who’s always trying to get the problem solved and move on. He’s impatient to fix things,”

Paulson’s Moon is in the rational sign of Aquarius and is part of the Grand Trine in air, which can sometimes get so caught up in the realm of ideas that there is a failure to see the reality on the ground.  The only water in his chart, showing his emotions and sensitivity, is his Mars in Cancer which reveals the tendency to act (Mars) based on emotions (Cancer) which can be a detriment in a crisis such as the one we find ourselves in now.

Paulson’s strong Aries nature and the square of Mars, his Sun’s ruler, to Jupiter shows that he is fiercely drawn to freedom and a lack of restrictions.  The lifelong presence of Saturn on his Mars, especially square to Jupiter, as likely led him to resent rules and restrictions that feel confining and oppressive.  This is reflected in his economic philosophy: “An open, competitive, and liberalized financial market can effectively allocate scarce resources in a manner that promotes stability and prosperity far better than governmental intervention.”

That may have been true during the realm of Pluto in Sagittarius, but the Pluto in Capricorn era demands something quite different:  structure, discipline, and the bursting of the Sagittarian bubble.

Ten Things You Should Know About Astrology

horoscope2

horoscope2

1.  Your birthchart is much more than your Sun sign.  You have more than ten different astrological signatures in your chart!!

The astrology that most people know comes from the horoscope in the newspaper.  If you’re an Aries, you’ll meet an interesting person today.  Libra, it’s time to make a decision.  This kind of astrology is called Sun Sign astrology, and while there are some excellent astrologers doing Sun Sign columns, they are not very useful except in getting people interested to dig a little deeper.  Real astrology looks at the position of all of the planets on the day that you were born: each planet represents an aspect of our personality, and each planet falls in one of the signs which helps to describe our personality a little more completely.  The relationships the planets make to each other in our chart describe the way our various impulses and characteristics work together or against each other, which is very helpful in breaking through blocks and challenges.

2.  JP Morgan said, “Millionaires don’t use astrology, billionaires do.”

Because a study of astrological cycles reveal the ebb and flow of the psychology of the masses, these cycles can provide clues that are useful in financial investing.  For example, while Pluto was traveling through Sagittarius, the sign of expansion and optimism, there was a seemingly endless flow of consumer confidence that drove the stock and housing markets in an unending upward direction.  As soon as Pluto entered Capricorn in January of 2008, the reality check that Capricorn requires caused investors to realize that they were standing on a house of cards and with the fall of confidence came the fall of the markets and the rest of the economy.  Short-term planetary cycles can give some clues as to the twists and turns of the markets, but it is difficult to predict specific investments with any precision because of the huge number of variables: the cycles of the individual investor, the particular company, its CEO, etc.  JP Morgan consulted often with noted astrologer Evangeline Adams, who said Morgan “drove the world before him because he has astrology behind him.”

3.  Astrology can help to explain and solve problems in relationships.

The astrological charts of two individuals can be compared, revealing underlying compatibilities and potential problems that can facilitate successful interaction between the two.  This is effective for spouses, business partners, as well as parents, children and siblings.  We can also calculate a chart of the relationship, called the “composite” chart, and track the planetary cycles that the relationship is likely to encounter.

4.  Health problems can sometimes be seen in the birthchart.

It is not uncommon for people to suffer chronic health effects as the result of an energy imbalance in the physical body or the nervous system, and this may appear in the birthchart.  If an individual possesses a great deal of fire energy, for example, and that fire energy is blocked from expression by another planet or because it is in “detriment” or afflicted in some way, that fire can, without an outlet, create health problems such as stomach distress or nervous disorders,  Some charts reveal a greater tendency than others to hold emotional pain in the body, and in those cases we can track the timing of episodes so that greater care can be taken during certain times when that area of the chart is stimulated.

5.  Understanding planetary cycles can help us navigate times of emotional difficulty.

As the planets in the sky travel through the solar system, they often make angles to planets in our birthchart, stimulating a variety of different cycles called “transits” that affect us in a variety of ways.  Cycles of Saturn create pressure for success and achievement, and can induce delays and cause disappointment.  Uranus cycles urge us to make changes in our life where we have become stale, creating a sense of restlessness and desire for something new.  Under the influence of Neptune we hear the Siren’s call – stimulating a longing within us to experience the divine, an urge towards the mystic.  These times can bring delusion, confusion and illusion as well as strong creative and romantic impulses.  Understanding the nature of the cycle that is occurring helps us to navigate through difficult waters more easily, and it also lets us know when these cycles will begin and when they will end.

6.  However, astrology cannot reliably predict specific events in a person’s life.

With all due respect to predictive branches of astrology, it is nearly impossible to predict with any accuracy when specific events will occur.  This is primarily because our lives are not predestined; we have been blessed with free will and the power to make certain decisions within the framework of our overall destiny.  If we are not prepared to meet our soulmate during a planetary cycle that would normally encourage our love life, that meeting will be delayed until we are ready.  Often there is psychological and spiritual work that needs to be done before we can manifest the success that we desires.  We can predict cycles that are more conducive to fulfilling our dreams than others, but the unfolding of the details of our life are a magical mystery.

7.  Astrology has been used by popes and world leaders throughout history, including Benjamin Franklin, Ronald Reagan and Adolf Hitler.

Benjamin Franklin was known to study astrology and often used it in writing his Poor Richard’s Almanac.  In the book The Writings of Benjamin Franklin he extolled the virtues of the “noble and ancient art” at length.  Ronald Reagan’s use of astrologer Joan Quigley is well-documented, as is the use of astrology by Adolf Hitler.  What is less well-known is the use of astrology by various popes.

8.  There are many different types of astrology including Chinese, Vedic/Jyotish (from India), Horary (traditional), and the more modern psychological and transformational astrology.

While Chinese astrology is also based on twelve signs, it is a twelve-year cycle with each year being named after the twelve “original” animals., along with the placements of the planets, Sun and Moon.  Vedic or Jyotish astrology originates in India and uses only the seven traditional planets, along with the “sidereal” zodiac which takes into account the precession of the equinoxes, rather than the Western “tropical” zodiac which is based upon the equinoxes occurring at zero degrees Aries and Libra.  Horary and Jyotish are oncerned more with prediction than modern astrology, which uses the outer planets along with Chiron, asteroids, and other points, and looks at the psychological makeup of the individual rather than predicting a future that is thought to be fixed as fate.

9.  While an accurate birthtime is useful for more specific information, a great deal can be learned using only the date of birth.

The birth time sets up the structure of the houses and provides the ascendant, or rising sign and the exact position of the Moon and makes it easier to time events with some specificity.  But even without an exact time the date of birth provides the placements of all other planets and their relationship to each other which offers clues into the inner workings of the personality and allows us to predict major and minor planetary cycles.

10.  Notwithstanding the recent decision by a few silly astronomers, Pluto in astrology is definitely still a planet!

Pluto is tiny and far away, but in astrology it is the most powerful planet of all with the strongest effect.  We can’t really explain why or how it works, but a look into our past at times when we were experiencing a Pluto cycle will remove all doubts about Pluto’s power!

Mercury Retrograde

hermes

hermes

Planets are said to turn retrograde when they appear to be moving backwards from our perspective on earth.  Western astrology studies the motion of the planets from earth, since we are the center of our own universe, and when planets are in retrograde motion there is a tendency to look back over what has been rather than move forward into the future.  This is a necessary part of the process of self-actualization and should not be feared!  Nearly every planet is seen to turn retrograde at one time or another, but the retrograde motion of Mercury is the best known.

Mercury rules communication, travel over short distances, messages, and the processing of information.  When Mercury is retrograde, about four times a year, there is often (but not always!) disruption in these areas of life.  Negotiations stall and have to be reconsidered, mechanical and communication systems will sometimes fail.  On the other hand, Mercury Rx periods are excellent for re-dos – for going back and perfecting something that has already been completed.  These are also good times for the internal processing of information such as psychological work or self-examination.

Contracts and agreements entered into while Mercury is retrograde are subject to renegotiation and confusion, so if you must sign anything binding during this period be as careful as possible that all terms are clear and in writing, and fully understood by all parties.  The current negotiation in Congress over the huge financial bailout will give us an opportunity to see this principle at work.

In other Mercury retrograde news, Arnold Schwarzeneggerhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif signed a bill banning texting (Mercury) while driving in California, Condoleeza Rice admitted that she led torture talks (Mercury) in 2002, and North Korea reversed its position on denuclearization talks (Mercury). In addition, Google launched its new Android phone yesterday, perhaps not the best time to release a new gadget.  The Iphone was also launched with Mercury retrograde and while it has been a great success, it also has experienced controversial setbacks such as a rapid price reduction which led to Apple’s being sued by disgruntled fans who stood in line to overpay for their new gadget.  Finally, the new supercollider has been shut down until spring because of electrical problems,

Mercury will remain retrograde until October 15th.

Chart for the Autumnal Equinox

The Autumn Equinox occurs when the Sun reaches the zero degree point of Libra in the Tropical zodiac.  At this point the days and nights are of equal length, and this is the last sense of balance before the day yields to night and the darkness ascends in power.

The charts for the four cardinal points (equinox and solstices), when the Sun reaches the zero degree of the four cardinal signs (Libra, Capricorn, Aries and Cancer) are considered points of power and are often used to forecast weather and other events.

The Equinox occurred this year on September 22 at 11:50 am EDT.  The chart features a tight conjunction of Mars to Mercury in Libra – a war (Mars) of words (Mercury) that threatens the tender balance that is Libra’s typical focus.  Venus is loosely associated with this conjunction, indicating potential difficulty with the usual alliances or with those things which we value, both provinces of Venus.  It’s not surprising that we’ve had a disruption in the financial markets under this triple threat, because even though Libra strives for harmony Mars looks for areas of weakness in order to create disruption and seek personal satisfaction.

The trine from Neptune to the triple conjunction in Libra adds a spark of divine inspiration and creativity to aid in resolution of these conflicts, and Jupiter (optimism) is trine Saturn (responsibility) which suggests a good balance between expansion that is rooted in confidence and good luck (Jupiter) and the discipline to put one’s plans into motion (Saturn).  However, Saturn sits on the Midheaven of the Equinox in both New York and Washington D.C., putting pressure on the forces of government and the financial system to wake up to reality and become humbled in the face of failure (in this case, the failures on Wall Street).  The presence of the Sun in the tenth house (ruled by Saturn) reaffirms the importance of government and responsibility over the next few months.

The Libra Sun is squared by the Cancer Moon in the chart, suggesting emotional conflicts that tug at our sense of reality, and the lack of the fire element in the planets right now can make it difficult for us to find the energy to lift ourselves out of our emotional blocks.  Libra teaches balance and that our relationships with others hold the key.  Autumn is my favorite time of year – it’s the time of my solar return and I relish the regeneration that is offered as the beauty of Libra moves into the darkness of Scorpio.

Pluto and Capitalism: “Creative Destruction”

I first heard the term “creative destruction” this morning on NPR relative to the current debacle in the financial industry, and I thought:  how perfect for the nature of Pluto re-entering Capricorn where it has already marked a destruction of the mode of capitalism that the US economy has devolved into.

From Wikipedia:

“The opening up of new markets and the organizational development from the craft shop and factory to such concerns as US Steel illustrate the process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one … [The process] must be seen in its role in the perennial gale of creative destruction; it cannot be understood on the hypothesis that there is a perennial lull.” (Quote from “The Process of Creative Destruction” by Joseph A. Schumpeter, 1942)

Pluto is the god of destruction; in our personal lives he removes any person or thing that is not serving the purpose for which it was intended in our soul’s journey.  That destruction can be felt as ruthless, but it is always recognized in retrospect as being necessary. When a computer’s files are corrupted to the point that the computer doesn’t work, we reformat the hard drive and reinstall the software.  I believe that the economic system in the US is that broken, and it needs to be allowed to self-destruct so that something more effective can be built in its place.

Obviously this is a painful process, but this is what we’ve been anticipating with Pluto’s entry into Capricorn, the sign of buildings, banking, governmental and religious structures.  Capricorn is also the sign of personal responsibility: of living up to one’s own rules.  The system that passed a major piece of bankruptcy legislation tightening the noose around the neck of individuals whose bad financial decisions or plain bad luck resulted in financial losses should be held to the same standards here.
