The Blast: Part Two

If you’re interested in the previous posts on the Blast Conference and my trip to Sedona, catch up here and here. Saturday morning I took a bit of time off to have a leisurely breakfast, and arrived at the conference in time to catch the end of Philip Sedgwick‘s talk on “Our new Solar System.”  Philip was one of the first astrologers to use the Galactic Center in astrological charts, and he makes a radical departure from the more traditional astrologers here at the conference by saying that the new astrology will learn to utilize all of the new “deities” as they are discovered in the solar system.  We already have Eris, Sedna, and Quoar, and many more will soon be discovered.  I have to say this is a bit overwhelming.  Some of the new planets, such as Eris, seem to have a lot of resonance and I’m starting to work with them.  Others, such as Sedna, have not yet begun speaking.

Next I attended a lecture by Jessica Murray, the author of Soul Sick Nation, the excellent book on the US astrological chart which I reviewed last year and which is available in the “Recommended Reading” bookstore in the sidebar. Jessica spoke on Saturn, my favorite planet (he sits right on my Sun, and it was either learn to love him or kill myself!!).  Jessica says, “It’s time we decriminalized Saturn” which I felt was very well put.  Here’s is a collection of potent quotes from her lecture:

Merriman

Merriman

  • “We need to look at Saturn experiences as humblings rather than humiliations.”
  • “Saturn is the code in the script of the birthchart that specifies the challenges we will face in life.”
  • “Saturn rules gravity, and we should look at Saturn’s hardships as being just like gravity – expected and normal.”
  • “Over time, Saturn gives us the freedom not to wonder about who we are.”
  • “Without respect for the Saturn archetype we become lost and dangerous children doing harm to our world.”

I spent the afternoon in a workshop with Ray Merriman on Financial Market Timing.  As my

readers know, I’m very interested in the connection between astrological cycles and the financial world.  Ray had spoken the previous evening about the connection between facets of our charts and the way we approach money, and that was quite interesting.   The afternoon workshop though was geared more towards financial experts and I found myself a bit over my head.  The work Ray does is extremely interesting and while astrology is a part of it, it is  only a small part.  He has identified a number of different time cycles within which the markets rise and fall, and these cycles are not connected to astrological cycles.  There’s a 90 year cycle, 52 year, six and four year cycles, etc.  It was interesting to see how the rise and fall of the markets connect with these cycles, and I learned a great deal about trading cycles (especially I learned how little I know!!) and the timing of the crash that many of us are expecting, which is likely to be in the period between the end of 2009 when Saturn goes into Libra and 2016 when many of these cycles are due to bottom out.

Here are a few astrological tidbits that came out in the workshop:

  • The sign that Uranus is in shows where the bubble will be.  When Uranus is at the end of one sign and the beginning of the next (with a 7-year range), the markets bottom out.
  • Saturn or Pluto in cardinal signs historically have marked drops in the markets.
  • The sign that Saturn is in is the sector where either prices fall or shortages occur, resulting in price increases.
  • Recoveries often occur about five years before Pluto enters the next sign.

Ray thinks we’re at the end of the oil peak – he correlates “peak oil” to Uranus (signifying the bubble in his terms) in Pisces (liquids), and that in the second half of Uranus in a sign the bubble pops, which we’re seeing now in the fall of oil prices, according to Ray.  When Uranus goes into Aries he thinks oil will stabilize and the bubble will then be in weaponry and other Aries-type things.

Then he talked about trading timing (many of the attendees were day traders who evidently subscribed to Ray’s newsletter).  One interesting thing to me is that planetary signatures don’t always signify ups or downs; they signify reversals in the market.  Mercury retrograde is somewhat reliable, and there is usually a 4% move within 4 trading days after Mercury changes direction.  Technical analysis is unreliable then, but instincts and intuition can be stronger according to Ray.  Evidently Venus changes of direction are consistently reliable in signifying market shifts.  When Saturn and Uranus changes direction there is a big shift within 11 days after Saturn goes retrograde, and after Uranus goes either Rx or direct.

I certainly don’t feel ready now to start day trading, but I do feel inspired to learn more about trading and especially, to watch my own transits and those of the current day when I’m making impulsive investments!

Unfortunately a minor medical emergency kept me from attending yesterday’s events (don’t worry, I’m fine now) which would have included my friend Steve Forrest’s talk, as well as those of the younger folks who have some very interesting ideas.  But it’s been a great weekend, and a fun trip as well.

Report from the Blast: Friday

Photo is of the live feed between the AAGB conference in London and the Blast in Sedona.

Photo is of the live feed between the AAGB conference in London and the Blast in Sedona.

This is a continuation of the post I started yesterday, reporting on the conferences from the Blast Astrology Conference.  I’m not a big conference person but I chose this one because (a) it’s in Sedona, and (b) the small size (200 people) appealed to me, as did the concentration of talks by the new generation of astrologers that are coming up with some mindblowing new techniques.

The second talk I attended was with Moses Siregar, a young astrologer who put the Blast together.  Moses uses both Vedic and Western astrological techniques, and specializes in locational astrology.  He spoke yesterday on degrees of exaltation and fall which is a concept too complex for the scope of this column so I’ll skip over it for now.

Next there was a live feed (using Skype conferencing) from the Astrological Association of Great Britain which was meeting in London as we were meeting in Sedona.  We heard a few speakers from their conference, and then Rob Hand, one of the international elders of the current astrological world, spoke from our meeting hall in Sedona.  Rob was an early pioneer of modern astrologer who then in the early 1990s started Project Hindsight, an organization dedicated to translating ancient and medieval astrological texts.  Rob said, “Why do we need to go back and recapture the past?  Not so that we can go back to it.”  He then went on to recount the history of astrology and how it fell out of favor after so many centuries of respect from the establishment.  Rob’s point is that after astrology was expelled from the universities in the 17th century astrologers lost a great deal of the academic learning that was important to the earlier astrology, and as a result modern astrology is a bit fuzzy, with no real underlying philosophy.  Rob’s conclusion is that we need to be moving towards a grand synthesis of ancient techniques with the impulse of modern astrology towards self-realization.  It was a surprise to him when the AAGB awarded him the 2008 Charles Harvey Award for astrological achievement.

Next Deb Houlding, owner of the fabulous Skyscript site, spoke on horary techniques of finding lost objects that originated with William Lilly back in Elizabethan times.

Jonathan Pearl of the Starpearls site is a financial astrologer who spoke of the upcoming shift of the fixed star Regulus from Leo into Virgo in December 2011 or January 2012.  Regulus is the star of leadership and nobility, and it has been in the sign of Leo since 150 bc, presiding over the rise of the Roman Empire.  Jonathan offered hopeful speculation about what might occur with Regulus (leadership) in the thrifty sign of Virgo that values preserving resources.

The day ended with a fascinating talk by Ray Merriman, noted financial astrologer who is often quoted in this column.  Ray revealed that his natal chart has the Sun conjunct Mars in Capricorn – a great sign for building a business, and that Venus and Jupiter (the two benefics) fall in Scorpio (the sign of speculating in stocks) in the second house (accumulating wealth).  Today I’m taking an afternoon workshop with Ray and I can’t wait to share some of the secrets he reveals there.

Greetings from Sedona!

CathedralRockThere’s a lot of hype around Sedona, but there’s no doubt that this is an incredible place.  I  dragged my husband Rich along for the week while I enjoy a few days of expanding my astrological horizons at the Blast Astrology Conference, and we spent all day yesterday exploring the incredible surrounding area after seeing the Grand Canyon the day before.  We wondered if the whole vortex thing might be a big hype, but after spending a day driving through the rocks we both agreed that the energy here in Sedona really is powerful!  Sedona is known for its vortexes, which are concentrated points of energy.  Yesterday we drove by this incredible rock formation (my photos didn’t turn out that well because the Sun was very strong, so I borrowed this one from Marc Jennings’ photographic website.).  Rich and I were both struck by the power we felt emanating from this formation, and later found out that it is Cathedral Rock, one of the more powerful vortex sites.

This morning was the first of my Blast workshops, both on locational astrology.  I found the lecture by Scott Wolfram particularly interesting as I had never heard of the Geodetic maps which place the zodiac around the globe based on the longitudinal map with Greenwich at zero degrees, offering clues to the way different cultures organize by geodetic zones.  For example, the Aries Midheaven line runs through Europe, which values individual freedoms whereas Russia and the middle east countries fall in the Taurus Midheaven line, valuing stable social structures more than individual freedoms.  He drew a few fascinating examples, such as that of the Ukraine which straddles the cusp between the Aries and Taurus midheavens and is split between the portion of the country that wants to stay aligned with Russia, and the portion that wants to join NATO and be independent.  Another interesting example was that of Peter the Great, who established his capital Petersburg right on the 0 degrees Taurus line on the cusp of the Aries/Taurus sections, and called his new city the “Window into Europe” (Europe being in the Aries portion).

Got to run now, I’ll post more later!!

Harvest Moon Tomorrow!

Harvest MoonThe Full Moon on the 15th is the Harvest Moon, so named because the period between sunset and moonrise is shorter as we near the Autumnal Equinox which makes for a longer workday on the farm.

This Full Moon is in the sign of Pisces. During the Full Moon, the Sun opposes the Moon, and there is a tension between the conscious mind and the more lunar instinctive emotions. With the Sun in Virgo, the tension in this Full Moon is between creating order out of our mundane reality (Virgo) and a yearning for something more transcendent and mystical (Pisces). As spiritual beings living on the earth plane, it is imperative that we learn to perfect this balance, and this Full Moon is a wonderful time to integrate the details of our lives with our spiritual awareness.

The chart for the Full Moon incorporates close conjunction from the Moon to Uranus, the planet of disruption, innovation and change. Here there is a polarization between the desire for change as presented by Uranus and the need for order and security that is prized by the Virgo Sun. Change is inevitable, and the presence of Uranus reminds us to let go of the things in our past that restrain us or keep us from moving forward.  The energy of Uranus can be intense as Uranus rules electromagnetic energy and radiation, so if this Moon (at 23 degrees Pisces) affects your chart you may find yourself unable to sleep and feeling wired.  Spending time in water can help soothe Uranian nerves and assist with entering the flow that Pisces requires.

The Full Moon chart also includes a trine from Jupiter to Saturn. This is a powerful alliance that helps us to integrate the confidence and opportunities that Jupiter provides with the discipline and achievement that Saturn fosters. This combination will help give form to our endeavors.

Mercury, Mars and Venus are all conjunct in Libra now, where relationships and harmony are called for.  For several days following the Full Moon, this intrepid trio of planets (Mercury, Mars, Venus) enter into a lovely dance (trine) with Neptune, planet of mysticism and spirituality. This is a beautifully creative time during which the soul can truly sing as long as the Mars energy is integrated properly into our lives. Mars is pure energy and can be directed in positive or negative ways. If we use its energy to express our needs appropriately, defend our boundaries peacefully and power our bodies physically, Mars is not likely to create too many problems but we may find ourselves in disagreements or arguments that require balance and negotiation. Mars and Mercury will remain in alignment with Neptune until the 24th or so, but the Venus influence here will last only a few days.

Still, there are some broader influences at work.  Pluto has just changed direction and is still stationary, and the intensity of its power is being felt all over the world.  We are also in the shadow of the Mercury Retrograde period, when communication becomes more difficult and we must go back over episodes in the past that need to be reworked in order to move forward when the Retrograde cycle is complete.

Pluto Direct and the Fall of the Markets

wallstreetOver the past year, I and other astrologers have warned of the upcoming collapse of what I have called the Relentless Optimism of the Pluto in Sagittarius period.  Back in May, I wrote:

As predicted in this column, stock markets around the world rallied in April with US stock funds rising nearly 5% in that month following Pluto’s retrograde turn as it heads back into Sagittarius. The Sagittarian optimism that has fueled overspending, overborrowing, overinvesting, and a drastic increase of home sizes and prices sank into despair when Pluto first entered Capricorn in January.

As Pluto retrograded back through Sagittarius, money writers weren’t sure whether to fall on the side of the bulls or the bears but astrologers knew that the end of the expansion was just a matter of time.

Some financial analysts are agreeing with astrologers, calling this a “Sucker’s Rally.”

Jean-Marie Eveillard, who runs the $US22 billion ($23.5 billion) First Eagle Global Fund, is skeptical the gains can last because the worst housing slump since the Great Depressionhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif will reduce earnings. S&P 500 companies are valued at 22.7 times profit, the most in four years.

Options traders are paying 63% more to protect against a drop in the S&P 500 than to bet on a gain, the widest difference since at least 2005.

”It may be a suckers’ rally,” said Eveillard, who is based in New York. ”Investors want to believe. But if I’m right, then there’s truth to the argument that this is the worst financial crisis since the end of World War II. The same kind of reflex is the wrong reflex.”

Pluto changed direction on the 9th, and immediately Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the vehicles through which America mortgaged its security to pay for its lifestyle, were taken over by regulators.  Shortly thereafter several banks failed, and today we have the bankruptcy announcement of Lehman Brothers and the fall of AIG, an insurance giant who was heavily invested in mortgage instruments.

Sagittarius is the sign of expansion and optimism, and Pluto’s travels through Sagittarius brought with it an optimism that seemed to be endless.  The stock market would forever go up, home prices would forever inflate, and all you had to do was borrow as much money as you can to fully leverage your lifestyle.  Capricorn is the sign of the reality check, and Pluto entered Capricorn back in January, bringing the first taste of that reality check.  The US chart has Sagittarius rising, and optimism is our middle name.  We don’t like the hard work and discipline that Capricorn requires, and Pluto in Capricorn will be difficult for Americans.

Capricorn is the sign of social structures: government, the banking industry, structures that keep society held together.  Pluto through Capricorn can create breakdown in these areas if they are not serving the purpose for which they are intended.  Pluto has no patience for silliness or illusion.  Read more about this cycle on my website.

Anne Hathaway’s Neptune Problem

hathaway_follieriAnne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri. spent his 30th birthday in jail after being convicted for 14 counts of fraud and money laundering.  Columnists are debating how much Anne actually knew about what Raffaello was up to when he represented himself as a representative of the Vatican in order to swindle billionaire Ron Burkle out of millions of dollars – perhaps astrology can tell why Anne fell for Follieri.

Anne Hathaway has appeared to live life as charmed as the princess she played in the Princess Diaries.  Raised in affluent Millburn New Jersey, she has been acting since she was thirteen and is a trained soprano as well as stage actress.  Her first break came at age 16 when she starred in a failed TV series, and she has worked steadily in major films ever since.  She is the new face of Lancome beauty products.

Anne’s astrological chart (11/12/1982, birthtime unknown) shows a quadruple conjunction of the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter.  Venus and Jupiter are the two most beneficial planets in the astrological language.  When Venus is fused with the Sun (the Self) in the birthchart, it grants beauty and the power of attraction.  Jupiter, the planet of prosperity and abundance, joins the Sun and Venus to create a powerfully positive charge in Anne’s life.  This is a trio of luck and good fortune, and nearly certain success.  People with a strong Jupiter in their charts often are confident and assured, with a strong sense of social justice and moral guidelines, and the presence of Mercury (mind and communication) there explains her strong intelligence and ability to slip in and out of roles as an actor.  Mercury can be a bit of a shapeshifter and enjoys trying on various lifestyles for size.

This trio of planets fall in the passionate sign of Scorpio, revealing Anne’s intensely emotional nature.  She is not a person who enjoys the superficial: when she falls for a man, a cause or a film she wants to dive in with all that she has.  Her Moon, showing her emotional needs and characteristics, is in Libra, the sign that yearns for partnership.  That Moon in her chart is squared by Neptune, planet of mystery, confusion and illusion which suggests that she is perhaps excessively romantic and has a tendency to idealize the people around her.  She loves to be in love and wants to see the best in everyone she meets.

When Anne met Follieri in 2004, transiting Neptune was beginning a series of challenging aspects to that powerful quadruple conjunction in Anne’s chart of the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter that continued until May of this year when she finally ended the relationship.  Under Neptune cycles we are more idealistic and therefore more easily duped, and this was certainly true of Anne Hathaway.

Follieri (6/26/1978, birthtime unknown), with the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Pisces, was surely sensitive and nurturing and Anne would have responded to his sensitivity.  His Moon (emotional security) linked up with her Venus (love), a powerful signature for “love at first sight.”  The brilliance of her entire quadruple Scorpio conjunction was in harmonious aspect to his Moon, and I suspect he fell for her as hard as she did for him.  She was a princess, and he was a person who was striving to be a prince.

But their relationship would have been intensely physical as well, with Mars (drive and desire) in both their charts in perfect alignment.  This was a passionate connection both physically and emotionally.  Shortly after the two met, Follieri began a program of vaccinating school-age children in South America, a project which Anne found to be “an aphrodisiac.” Uranus (autonomy and radical behavior) is in a stressful aspect to Follieri’s Venus (relationships and partnership) which suggests that it would be difficult for him to settle down into a committed relationship.

One very interesting aspect in Follieri’s chart is the square (challenging aspect) between Pluto (transformation, death and rebirth) to Jupiter (philosophy, prosperity and religion) in light of the fact that Follieri’s scam involved profiting from the sale of properties owned by the Catholic Church (Jupiter) to settle lawsuits from sexual abuse (Pluto/Jupiter).   The square of Pluto to Jupiter in the birthchart often shows an individual who is either rigid (Pluto) in his/her righteousness or religiosity (Jupiter), or someone whose confidence and desire for an easy road (Jupiter) becomes their downfall (Pluto).

In April 2007, when Follieri’s world began to collapse, he was entering into the first stage of his Saturn Return, the planetary cycle that happens at age 28-30.  During the Saturn Return we are challenged by the gods, and if we take the easy road we flunk those challenges.  This is the road Follieri was on, and it was at this time that Ron Burkle sued him for misappropriating funds for their partnership.  Transiting Neptune at the time was throwing a blanket of misty idealism and confusion over Anne’s chart and she was doing her best to believe in her boyfriend until the Neptune cloud lifted last Spring and she finally ended things with Follieri.

Anne’s strong Scorpio nature does not let go easily, but her Capricorn Mars is all business.  She has her eye on the future and with Saturn and Neptune out of the way her path should be much more direct now.

The Astrology of September 11

It’s always easier to look backwards and find astrological correlations to major events than it is to predict specific events using astrology.  Only astrologer Lynne Palmer predicted the attacks of September 11, although other astrologers did note that this period would be a stressful time for the US.

On the day of the attacks, transiting Pluto was within seventeen minutes of an exact conjunction to the US ascendant at 12 degrees Sagittarius.  Astrologers had worried for months about the opposition of Saturn to Pluto that was in effect at that time, and Pluto, which had been traveling retrograde, turned direct on August 25th within 11 minutes of the US ascendant.  When planets change direction in a close aspect to one of our planets, the effect is extremely intense.

Saturn and Pluto are both Lords of Death with Saturn having played that role in the early days of astrology before Pluto was discovered.  Modern astrologers don’t find Saturn as evil as the more traditional astrologers do, but the stress between the restriction of Saturn and the transformative power of Pluto can be difficult at best.  With these two facing off and Pluto sitting right on the ascendant, the face of American life and politics (ascendant) were irrevocably changed (Pluto) that day.

But this Pluto cycle actually began on November 25, 2000 when Pluto first crossed the US ascendant – the week of September 11 was the second phase of this cycle.  During that week in November 2000, the Florida recount began that would be the first phase of the lawsuits that resulted in George Bush being appointed President.

It seems likely to me that the events surrounding the 2000 election in the first phase of Pluto crossing the US ascendant undermined the structures that formed the very fabric of the country to the point where it was vulnerable to attack when Pluto came around the second time and sat right on the US ascendant for a month or more.  .

Since that time Mars in the US chart has turned retrograde (back in 2007), signifying for many astrologers a weakening in the formerly powerful military might of the country.  Transiting Pluto last spring began a square to the Midheaven (the government) of the US chart that will return in early 2009 when Pluto returns to Capricorn.

Mark Lerner points out that Mercury was sitting right on the ascendant of the chart of the first World Trade Center attack in NYC, exactly conjunct the US Saturn.  Mark writes, “And when this first plane hit — remember Mercury had winged sandals and was the “Messenger of the Gods,” symbolizing this jet in the sky — it would set off a chain reaction that would throw our entire nation into extreme fear (Saturn). In fact, for the first time in American history, this event, followed by the other plane hijackings and crashes, would close all American airports.”

Hindsight is the clearest vision we possess.  But on this day when we honor those who gave their life on the day that transformed American politics forever, I believe it is our duty to stay informed and work like hell in our communities to bring American life back into balance.

A Look at Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow’s new show began on September 9, and if you’re a fan of the truth, no matter what side you’re on, you owe it to herself to check her out.

Twilight has posted a noon chart for Rachel, along with these words of wisdom:

I wonder who’ll be on the political scene in the USA around 10 years from now, say for the elections in 2016 and 2020? One name in the future’s political headlines which wouldn’t surprise me a bit would be Rachel Maddow. She’s 35 now, in ten years she’ll be just about the right age to run as a presidential candidate, or be chosen as VP, having perhaps done a stint in the House or Senate in intervening years.

Rachel’s new TV show, which has all the hallmarks of being “the one to watch” for those keen on politics, was aired for the first time last night. She has been seen fairly regularly on MSNBC all year, doing pundit duty along with Olbermann, Matthews, Buchanan and the rest, as well as presenting a regular radio show on Air America. She strikes me as the type of person for whom US politics is crying out. She oozes confidence, speaks and debates with a no nonsense clarity, clear grasp of issues, but never loses her calm, friendly approach.

What’s most notable about Rachel’s chart to me is the combination of Aries (Chiron, Sun and Venus conjunct in Aries) which is dynamic, inspirational, willful and courageous; Moon and Mercury conjunct in sensitive Pisces, which is empathic and creative but fragile; and Mars conjunct Jupiter in Aquarius – the innovator, the fighter for social justice and equality.   Pluto (power issues) opposes Venus in her chart, and she has no doubt had her share of difficult relationships and partnerships.  It is likely easier for her to make her own way than to partner with another, for business purposes anyway.  This planetary combination signifies relationships that end when they are no longer needed, and it is the Aries nature to make their own way in any event.  A trine (harmonious aspect) from Neptune to her Venus eases the difficulty of the Pluto aspect and shows a romantic idealism that minimizes that Pluto tension.

Saturn is in Gemini and squares Mercury (ruler of Gemini), tying the disappointment and frustration of Saturn to the mental and communication process.  Rachel’s intelligent did not come easy – she had to work hard for it and likely lacked confidence in her early life.  Although she has strong opinions, they are expressed with a solid background of research and information (Saturn/Mercury).

Jupiter and Uranus have both been aspecting Rachel’s progressed Venus, signifying beneficial (Jupiter) and sudden/surprising (Uranus) events through Rachel’s relationships.  Although she has had her own radio show on Air America for quite some time, it was the mentorship of Keith Olbermann that brought her so suddenly into the spotlight.  Jupiter has also been trine Rachel’s progressed Sun this year, allowing her to shine brightly in her new success.  Her good fortune will continue into early next year with a series of minor Jupiter transits that will keep the gods smiling on her.

Jupiter Direct! And Exactly Trine Saturn…

When a planet changes direction (as we see the planet from our vantage point on Planet Earth), it is particularly powerful. Today we have Jupiter turning direct after spending several days in conflict with Mars, Mercury and Venus.

Jupiter brings expansion and makes everything that it touches larger than life, and when it conflicts with other planets it can be a bit of a bully.  Jupiter in square aspect to Mars (drive and assertion) creates a lot of aggressive energy; in square to Mercury (communication) promotes arguments and a sense of righteousness.  We are certainly seeing all of these dynamics being played out in the political arena, where the rhetoric has been extremely heated over the past week since the Republican convention.

The trine (harmonious aspect) of Saturn to Jupiter over the past week has the potential to harness Jupiter’s positive power in a way that can effect real change, and Obama and McCain have agreed to appear together at Ground Zero to honor the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, and to refrain from campaigning on that day.  On September 11, Mars, Mercury and Venus will line up in Libra where tact and diplomacy rule.  Even Bill Clinton will get into the picture, with a reported meeting scheduled with Barack Obama to hopefully put away the hatchet once and for all. The Sun opposes Uranus (sudden change and reversals) the following day, so there may be some surprising news come out of either of these meetings.
