Two Charts for an Independent India

I am not an expert in mundane astrology (the study of charts of nations and events), but I do enjoy exploring this realm and recent events in Mumbai led me to investigate India’s astrology chart.  There are two charts that are commonly used for India.

My usual reference is The Book of World Horoscopes by the late Moon Moore, published by Ray Merriman’s Seek-It Publications.  Mr. Moore uses the January 26, 1950 (midnight, Delhi India) date for the birth of the Republic of India.  One could also use the August 15, 1947 chart for Indian independence, although at that point India was still considered a “dominion” under the British commonwealth.

Like Moon Moore, I prefer the 1950 Republic of India chart.  First, it makes sense to use the chart that shows the date India became a nation and established its own identity.  Second, the chart makes more sense (but you all know how I hate to speculate on a chart because it “makes sense”!!).

The 1950 chart has the Sun in Aquarius, where the 1947 chart has the Sun in Leo (like the chart for Pakistan, which was declared independent by Britain on the same day).  The 1947 chart for India and for Pakistan have a stellium of five planets in Leo, including an exact conjunction of Saturn and Pluto (tests, challenge, death and rebirth) flanked by Mercury on one hand and the Sun and Venus on the other.  The struggle for rulership throughout Pakistan’s history can be seen in this Leo stellium (Leo rules royalty and the nation’s leaders).  The Leo stellium is squared by Uranus, planet of rebellion and revolution, creating constant changes and reversals in the nation’s leaders.

India on the other hand is a fairly stable democracy which is more clearly demonstrated by the triple conjunction of the Sun, Jupiter and Venus (the three benefics) in Aquarius in the fourth house of the people.  Aquarius has a thirst for democracy and social justice, and India has shown great progress since becoming a Republic in the field of social democracy,  Libra is rising the chart, reflecting the good relationships India has maintained with most of its neighbors (also seen in the Jupiter (abundant) /Venus (social relations) conjunction in the chart).

I’m supposed to be writing the December Skywatch tonight so I’ll just touch on this today.  Please leave comments if you have any thoughts or ideas on these two charts!

Venus and Jupiter Align, and Other Planetary News

Rich took this beautiful photo a few days ago while we were in Florida – you can see Venus (the brighter planet) with Jupiterhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif just above it.  Venus and Jupiter will conjunct in Capricorn on Sunday night around 2 am EST, and if the sky is clear you will see a beautiful sliver of a crescent moon adjoining them.

We had no internet connection so my only link to my cyberworld was via a dialup connection using my Treo, so I didn’t write another post about the New Moon on Thanksgiving Day that occurred as Uranus turned direct.  However, the effects of Uranus changing direction are making themselves known (it was traveling retrograde and has not switched to be moving forward (from our perspective here on earth).  Uranus rules sudden change and revolutionary behavior, and in its change of direction we see the worst terrorist attack in several years in Mumbai India that has killed over 200 people including astrologer Alan Scherr.

Uranus changed direction just one day after Pluto re-entered Capricorn, bringing both of those planets squarely into focus.  The chart of the first attack (11/26/08, 9:30 pm, Mumbai) shows Jupiter (religion and faith) sitting right on the descendant, the cusp of the seventh house of allies and open enemies suggesting that the attack is of an ideological nature.  The Sun, Mercury and Mars are all conjunct in Sagittarius, ruled by Jupiter and sharing similar identification with ideology and points of view, and the Sagittarius planets are in the fifth house of public enjoyment (such as hotels).

This is not to say that religious terrorism will be on the rise in the near future, but the combination of the Uranus change of direction with Pluto changing signs is a powerful one and may offer a signal of what we can expect when Uranus squares Pluto beginning in 2010.   I do believe, though, that the religious fervor will begin to fade and the conflict over these next few years will have more to do with finances and inequities in economic situations (Capricorn) rather than religion.

Thanksgiving Dishes by Zodiac Sign

This will be a little late for most of you, but here is a very entertaining bit from Tarot.com with some tips on what to feed your zodiacal friends (use the rising and Moon signs as well as Sun signs for better accuracy).

You’ll learn that your Aries guests will arrive hungry, that Geminis like exotic foods.  Virgos are usually on food trips but will of course stay to clean up. and the Cancers in the bunch will not want to miss a course!

Then after dinner, let’s all focus on what we are grateful for since this will expand our experience and bring more of what we seek in our lives.  And for me, I have a wish that I remember to do this practice every day so that someday I’ll be really good at it.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Saturn/Uranus: Innovation Center Put on Hold

I read this in the paper today and the astrological symbolism is just too perfect to ignore: Plans for a glitzy new research center called the Innovation Center (Uranus) which was to be built here in Chapel Hill as part of the new University of North Carolina campus extension have been delayed (Saturn) because of the slowing economy.

Innovation is a keyword for Uranus, and delay is Saturn’s hallmark so will not be surprising when over the next few years we see plans for all kinds of scientific innovation and research delayed with the two-year opposition cycle of Saturn to Uranus.  Saturn doesn’t always quash the plans of Uranus – sometimes Uranus forces Saturn to change and break free of old calcified patterns (Saturn) to seek something more authentic (Uranus), especially with Pluto in Capricorn where it is destroying old structures in order to build eliminate the forms that are no longer working for us.

Michael Vick: An Astrological Portrait of Frustration

Michael Vick

Michael Vick plead guilty today to dogfighting charges at the state level after serving nearly a year for federal charges.  The horrific nature of these crimes, which as an animal lover I cannot bear to repeat in this column, led me to investigate his astrological chart (born 6/26/1980, time unknown, Newport News VA) to look for clues to his behavior.  I am in no way excusing the actions of criminals in this kind of chart research – Vick’s chart did not doom him to cruelty and he always had the choice to choose a different path.

The psychospiritual development of a human being is the result of a combination of the psychological and spiritual factors in the birthchart, the family environment, and the choices that we make at every moment of our lives.  The raw material in a birthchart will not help us to predict which individuals will become psychopathic criminals and a criminal may share a birthchart with a brillliant philanthropist.  It is easier to look back and see clues in the birthchart that can help to explain where the psychopathic behavior originates.

In the case of Michael Vick, his Sun is in Cancer, the sign of emotional sensitivity.  Cancer is a difficult sign for a man – its extreme sensitivity often does not easily find expression in most societies where men are expected to be strong and emotional sensitivity often becomes buried.  Obviously, there are many Cancer men who have successfully integrated the need for caring into their lives but for Michael Vick the Cancer is a starting point in an analysis of a personality which has not integrated this dynamic.

Jupiter (confidence and expansion) in Vick’s chart forms a harmonious aspect (sextile) to his Sun which offers opportunities and good luck along with an inner optimism that helps to keep him more balanced than he would otherwise be.  The combination of the Cancer sensitivity to the plight of others with the faith and optimism of Jupiter often shows a philanthropic nature, and in fact Michael Vick has invested in at-risk children in his community through his own charitable foundation and others.

Mars in Vick’s chart is in Virgo, a placement that is typically not aggressive but rather expresses anger and desire (Mars) through disciplined and systematic means (Virgo).  This placement is typically found in those who are hard workers and perfectionists in their craft.  But Saturn conjuncts Vick’s Mars, squelching his ability to express his desires and express his anger.  The conjunction of Saturn to Mars suggests an overbearing father who perhaps was a stern disciplinarian who did not permit the expression of the self.  A continual repression by a parent can lead to a deep rage that eventually requires expression of some kind.

Mars is further stressed by a square (challenging aspect) from Neptune, the planet of confusion and illusion.  A stressful aspect from Neptune to Mars drowns the fire of our internal energy (Mars) with a flood of inhibitions and distortions.  This aspect combines with the Saturn/Mars combination and creates a situation where the internal rage that has no viable expression must express itself through a fantasy of violence.  Neptune drives many of our instincts into the realm of the unconscious and in this case it is the anger and drive of Mars that becomes an unconscious instinct rather than a mature expression of personality.

My clients will recognize this as what I call a “Mars Problem,” and for Vick it is the spark for the flame that is consuming his career.  Adding fuel to the Mars fire is a square from Mars/Saturn to his Venus and to his Moon, revealing a lonely (Saturn/Moon) and touchy (Mars/Moon) nature and a guy who doesn’t feel that anyone will love him (Saturn/Venus).  Vick’s parents were young (15 and 16) when he was born, and it is likely that the parenting he received was less than ideal.  This is reflected in his birthchart.

Vick’s father has reported that the dogfighting began in 2001, coinciding with the period hen transiting Pluto likely formed a conjunction to Vick’s Moon (which is anywhere from 8 to 20 degrees Sagittarius) and began a multi-year transit over all of the sensitive points listed above.  Pluto transits tend to bring out compulsive behavior as the underground of our psyche (Pluto) is excavated and we may have difficulty knowing how to deal with the intensity of this excavation.

Transiting Uranus came into the picture in 2006 and when Vick was fined in November of that year for making an obscene gesture to fans Uranus was at about 11 degrees Pisces and may have been forming a square (challenging) aspect to his Moon which would put his birthtime at about 6 am and give him a Cancer ascendant which would amplify that sensitivity even more.

Currently, the opposition of Saturn and Uranus in the sky is in exact aspect to the Mars complex in Vick’s chart.  Saturn will retrograde in December as it makes a station (stands still) in a square to Vick’s Saturn which will intensify the pressure on Vick and also likely force him to take responsibility for his actions.

I hope that therapy is a part of Vick’s hopes for early release.  The kind of cruelty that he has shown to animals is always symbolic of a greater conflict that can result in even greater violence to others

Sunday Inspiration: Thoughts on Transformation

mountains” In a world of beginnings, middles, and endings, all beginnings force an ending. Beginnings push through middles and roll on to endings. And what do endings do? Does the energy of the event disappear?

No, it doesn’t. It goes on to be something new, re-forming in a new beginning, an endless, inexhaustible cycle of energy.”

Bronx Mowgli Wentz!

wentzSinger Ashlee Simpson and and her rocker husband Pete Wentz have welcomed a child into the world: Bronx Mowgli Wentz (11/20/2008, time unknown, NYC).  You can tell without even glancing at his astrological chart that he will have quite an unusual beginning!  What a name – named after Bronx, New York, most eclectic of the boroughs, and Mowgli, the child of Rudyard Kipling and Disney tales who was raised by a pack of wolves who goes through quite an identity crisis before deciding to join the human pack.

Bronx Mowgli was born under the sign of Scorpio, at the critical 29th degree.  The 29th degree of any sign signifies a life of transition and growth – it’s kind of a “last chance” to get things right.  This is a significant lifetime for little Bronx Mowgli and there will be a necessity for him to plow into Scorpio experiences that will help him to perfect the Scorpio challenge of living a life that fearlessly delves into the underworld of emotional intensity, passion, and power.  His Sun conjuncts both Mars and Mercury, although Mars (the aggressive drive and instinct) is in Sagittarius instead of Scorpio which suggests that he will be torn between the need to remain focused in the emotional realm (Scorpio) and the need to expand his horizons and search for experiences that are lighter and more buoyant (Sagittarius).  Still, with Mercury  (thought and communication) in Scorpio along with the Sun, he will be an intense little guy who is passionate about everything.

We don’t know exactly what time he was born but we do know that it was Thursday night, so Bronx Mowgli’s Moon is in Virgo, revealing that his emotional nature (Moon) will require a sense of order and good boundaries (Virgo) in order to feel secure.  That Moon conjuncts Saturn, planet of restriction and isolation, which suggests that he is likely to be a lonely child that tends toward sadness and perhaps depression.

The Moon is also opposed (180 degree aspect) by Uranus, planet of innovation and radical change and behavior,  Saturn and Uranus are opposed in the sky right now, and you can read more about that phenomenon here but basically, with these two planets there is a tension between the revolutionary tendencies of Uranus and the need for discipline and restriction of Saturn.  This conflict will be a part of Bronx Mowgli’s nature and it will affect his ability to feel emotionally secure, as signified by the Moon which plays an integral part in this dynamic.

Because the Moon often represents the mother, Bronx is likely to feel that Ashlee is unavailable to him (Saturn/Moon) or that her behavior is erratic and that he can’t depend on her (Moon/Uranus).  It may be difficult for him to make friends and he may be a child who spend more time alone (Saturn/Moon) or with imaginary playmates (Uranus/Moon).  But Venus, planet of love and beauty, forms a trine (harmonious aspect) to the Moon which is an extremely beneficial combination that bestows an ability to get along with others, and also suggests that despite difficulties in his relationship with Ashlee there will be an underlying affection that will overcome the problems that are certain to arise.

In addition Jupiter, planet of abundance and opportunity, forms an exact trine to Saturn and to his Moon as well, which signifies that the loneliness that he experiences as a child will help him to grow and expand (Jupiter) beyond the limitations of his circumstances. He will have an underlying faith in life (Jupiter/Moon) that will help him to maintain a more lofty perspective despite any childhood experiences that challenge him.

This is a wonderful combination of stressful and harmonious aspects that denote a lifetime of evolutionary growth and positive change through challenge.  If he was born between 8 and 11 pm Leo will be rising in his chart, which will relieve some of the Scorpio pressure to remain in the Underworld and will help him to navigate a life in the spotlight.

A “Bear Market Rally” Next Week?

istock-bearThe Dow Jones average continued its spectacular slide last week, ending with the average below 8000 for the first time since 2003.

It’s interesting to look at the history of the rise of the DJIA.  In November 1972 the average rose about 1,000 for the first time ever.  In November 1995 the average closed above 5,000 for the first time, a 400% increase that averages 17% per year.  By March of 1999, with Pluto in Sagittarius, the Dow had risen to 10,000, a 25% per year increase, and October 2006 saw the Dow above 12,000 for the first time despite an intervening tech bubble and terrorist attack that weakened the markets.

If we take the average of the Dow Jones index from the 1972 price point of 1,000 to Friday’s close at 8,000 we still have an average increase of 19% per year which is extremely reasonable by anyone’s standards.  The fact that we are considering 8,000 a low point in the market despite this steady and solid increase in the average shows the kind of ridiculous expectations along with the extreme highs of the Pluto in Sagittarius period and its relentless optimism®.

At any rate, over the past few days the Moon has been in Virgo where it is more conservative and favors thrift over investment, and on Friday the Moon approached a conjunction to Saturn, the planet of restriction and negative expectations, driving the mood of investors into a melancholic depression that will have passed by the time the markets open on Monday.  By that time the Sun will have moved into Sagittarius where it will conjunct both Mercury and Mars which are already in Sag, and the mood will be much more optimistic.

The New Moon on November 27th is in Sagittarius where it will conjunct Mercury and Mars as I wrote a few days ago, and this combination of planets will provide us with a fiesta of optimism.  On that day Uranus will turn direct, and Ray Merriman reports that when the planets change direction they always bring a reversal in the markets, either up or down. But Pluto arrives at 0 degrees Capricorn on the same day, placing us firmly in the challenging economic period that we have all expecting.

Planetary cycles have a global reach, and the Asian and European markets were strong yesterday despite the drop in the US stocks, and I suspect that next week we will see a bit of schizophrenic optimism and depression as the Sagittarius New Moon collides with the brutal realism of Pluto in Capricorn, and Uranus’s change of direction brings erratic swings in both directions.

The 27th is the Thanksgiving holiday and the markets will be closed that day, so I suspect that the optimism will prevail over the few days before the holiday. When the markets reopen after the US holiday reality is likely to rule once again and the markets will correct to reflect this.

Thanks D for your proofreading this morning!

Pluto in Capricorn: Rebuilding Corporations from the Ground Up

GM Centennial Top VehiclesOne reason it’s impossible to offer accurate predictions using astrology is that the planets don’t influence us in any kind of uniform manner.  One person’s Pluto transit to Mars will be very different from that of another person.  Pluto is like a heat-seeking missile: it looks for areas in our lives that aren’t working, and nukes them.  If everything is working properly we instead see the best of Pluto: an intense infusion of empowerment that helps us to become strong and better able to transform our lives.  Pluto is like a tornado that whips through a community and destroys flimsy mobile homes but leaves more solid structures intact.

As Pluto travels through Capricorn until 2023, it will be destroying and rebuilding certain parts of the world governments, banking systems, and corporations that fall under the Capricorn domain, and this is why the current US Treasury plan of throwing billions of dollars at crumbling financial institutions and corporations like General Motors will not work.  This is not to say that the government should just allow the delicate economic web to fail, but using a trategy from the soon to be defunct Pluto in Sagittarius era such as hoping for the return to increased optimism and confidence (Sagittarian traits) by pumping lots of cash into bad companies will no longer work under the seriousness of Capricorn, which is more concerned with function than image.

General Motors, the leader of the US car industry, is a good example of an effect of the shift from Pluto in Sagittarius to Capricorn.  Under Pluto in Sagittarius, GM drank the Sagittarian kool-aid that bigger is better, and what goes up will never come down and its Hummer line is a great example of that principle.  America’s love for SUVs disappeared last summer when gas hit $4 a gallon, and GM was left without a Plan B and with a much lower budget for research and development than other car companies.

As we shift into Pluto in Capricorn, we all must look at every aspect of our lives to see where we must be more practical and more effective.  This is a much-needed process that will correct and adjust anything that has gone out of whack.  The Sagittarian era was a wonderful period that demonstrated that we do create our own reality with our optimism, but now we must add a practical component.  It’s important not to throw out the optimism baby with the Sagittarian bath, because our ability to create and manifest our intentions has not changed.  We simply must be practical and add the Capricornian ideals of hard work and discipline into the mix.

And so will General Motors.  Just giving the company a bailout to continue its ineffective practices will not save GM and the intricate economic web that surrounds it.  The company must be restructured from the ground up and forced to deal with current economic realities.  MSN’s Jim Jubak seems to understand this:

Can General Motors (GM, news, msgs) be saved? I sure hope so. Certainly, as I argued in my last column, “Globalization isn’t what’s killing GM,” incompetent management and intransigent unions have played a big role in bringing the company to its knees. And I’m convinced that current turnaround plans that rely almost exclusively on cost-cutting and layoffs won’t work.

But the challenge that has pushed General Motors to the brink of bankruptcy isn’t unique to the car maker. Just about every one of the former gems of the U.S. industrial economy faces this same challenge. As I wrote in my last column, in a world where Northwest Airlines (NWACQ, news, msgs) can outsource its flight attendants, the hope that we in the U.S. can ride out the storm by hiding in the service economy is an empty illusion. …

Jubak suggests that General Motors would be better off following the example of Dell Computing, “Build your company around one or two functions — and do those better than anybody else in the world — and then build a logistical system that will let you buy the best quality product in the world (for your price point) at the lowest possible cost.”  Read the whole article here.

The problem with Jubak’s model and really, the model for all of the successful mega- corporations in the world today is that it depends on outsourcing and cutting compensation packages in order to remain competitive.  But I suspect that the days when a megalithic US corporation can succeed while retaining well-paid American workers with full pension systems is over.  Smaller companies that can adapt more quickly to changing economic realities will always be able to run a profitable and successful operation and still take care of their employees.  But we are living in a different world now, and corporations will have to adapt to this new world or fail in the process.

Handing a big bag of cash to General Motors will not save it unless that bag of cash comes with an army of advisers who can bring the company into the 21st century and the Capricornian era.
