Mercury and Venus light up the night

Mercury and Venus are aligning in the sky and over the next week or so they will be beaming a beautifully bright light from the western sky, appearing as the brightest “star” visible in the heavens.  Normally Mercury moves a little more quickly than Venus but at the moment Mercury is slowing down in preparation for its retrograde turn on the 17th so the two planets will be within three degrees of each other until around April 11th.

Astrologically, Mercury (the mind) and Venus (relating)  are both in the sign of Taurus which is ruled by Venus, so the influence Venus is particularly strong there.  Anything having to do with communication between individuals such as negotiations or detailed planning sessions are favorable under this influence.  It is easier now to express your viewpoints and have them be clearly understood, and this influence is also favorable for financial matters.

Astrology in my world: Saturn square my Mars

art by Rainbow Carnage. Last fall when I was in Jamaica, transiting Saturn made a square to my Mars.  Saturn is the planet that causes restriction – it brings delays, disappointments, and can cause us to feel overworked.  Mars in our chart shows where we are energized, inspired, and how we go about getting things done.

Having just gone through a major transit of Pluto to my Mars, my  Mars is pretty well activated.  I speak up for myself, get plenty of exercise to activate that Mars energy, and set good boundaries, so I wasn’t sure what to expect when Saturn first squared my Mars when I was on vacation in Jamaica last fall.  As it happened, I turned my vacation into a fitness bootcamp by getting serious (Saturn) about exercise (Mars), but I also got trapped in the hotel room when I was so eaten up by bugs that I couldn’t venture outside.  My husband Rich took off for the beach, leaving me peacefully reading on the veranda until I couldn’t find the key to lock the room which effectively trapped me (Saturn) inside the room, unable to do anything (Mars).  I later found the key right where Rich said it was, on the dresser, but meanwhile I had a powerful Saturn/Mars experience.

So yesterday Rich and I were up in Asheville for a couple of days, and he had a meeting there Monday morning.  I had a whole list of cool things I was going to do with the dog while Rich was at his meeting (he left at the crack of dawn), but when I got dressed and was ready to go, I realized he had taken the car keys, effectively trapping me in the room again!  Sure enough, that was the exact second hit of the transit of Saturn in a square to my  Mars.

As Saturn transits go that could have gone a lot worse and I really had to laugh.  Instead of gallivanting around Asheville (Mars), I worked (Saturn) all morning.  Fortunately I was able to get a lot done, because Saturn really does ultimately reward us when we knuckle down to our responsibilities.

Libra Full Moon today, March 29

Full Moon in LibraVenus rules today under the Libra Full Moon which culminates at 10:25 pm Eastern time.  When the Moon is full, the light of our emotional interior as described by the Moon is more powerful than the light of the conscious mind as represented by the Sun, and there is a culmination of our hopes, dreams and desires.  In Libra the Moon craves partnership, balance and harmony.  There is a longing here for integration and a need for connection and peace.

The Libra Full Moon is opposite the Aries Sun, which is primarily driven by a need for self-assertion.  The Aries Sun seeks leadership and adventure and a positive expression of the aggressive instinct.  Under the influence of the Full Moon, this brash individuality must be balanced with the Libra desire for peace and harmony.

Pluto forms a challenging square to both the Sun and Moon in the chart of the lunation, suggesting that something must be surrendered in order for transformation to take place.  Whenever Pluto is involved there is a call to strip away the fluff and emerge naked in a state of Truth.

At its core, the tension between Libra and Aries is the need to achieve a balance between the Self and the Other.  This is one of the major defining principles of life on Earth, and any imbalance in this area of our lives at this time will be revealed now as something to work through and master.  Pluto’s goal is to bring us into our full empowerment, and in this lunation (lunar event) any power imbalance in relationships of any kind will be revealed.

Venus is in a nearly exact harmonious sextile to Neptune during the lunation, and very tightly sextile to Chiron as well, strengthening its influence now.  Venus and Neptune are closely related; in fact Neptune is often called the “higher octave” of Venus.  Where Venus represents love and affection, Neptune’s domain includes what could be called “higher love” – divine compassion and transcendence of the human limitations of love and relating.  There is a flowing creativity present in this lunar event that will be very useful for dreamwork or spiritual experience through conscious intent.

Venus is also exactly, to the minute, in a semi-sextile (or 30 degree) aspect to Uranus which suggests the need for adjustment as something new and different (Uranus) enters the picture and begins to create change.

This Full Moon is the culmination of a cycle that began with the New Moon in Pisces two weeks ago.  We began with a focus on an inner flow that transcends personal experience, and now we find ourselves in a balance that is very strongly personal – the balance between the Self and the Other.  Any kind of spiritual balance requires conscious attention and presence, and today’s Full Moon is a particularly beautiful opportunity to find that balance.

Astrology goes to court in India

This
is wrong in so many ways (thanks to Astrococktail for the article):

Mumbai: Is astrology a science or an art of making money? The city-based NGO, Janhit Manch, has started a debate on the issue in the Bombay high court.

A public interest litigation (PIL) filed by the manch and its convener Bhagwanji Raiyani, along with his associate Dattaram Kumkar, has questioned the validity of predictions by well-known astrologers, including Bejan Daruwalla, and unknown babas like Brahmarshi Shri Kumar Swami.

Is Daruwalla and Brahmarshi were not represented by their advocates, the court issued notices to them to file their replies in four weeks. The more than 100-page petition pointed to several cases, including that of Indira Gandhi and Charan Singh becoming prime ministers, despite opposite predictions.

Hearing the submissions, justice Rebello remarked: “It is difficult to understand how wearing a stone on a finger can change one’s fate! But astrology is a science and that has been accepted by the Supreme Court.”

The PIL referred to Daruwalla, the “famous name of an astrologer and that numerologist among the elite class” who operates “somewhere from Colaba and Ahmedabad”, with his contact numbers on his website. When Kumkar contacted the astrologer’s office, Bapu, his personal assistant, told him to send a Rs25,000 cheque/cash for an appointment, which would be any time after 10 days; if the appointment was urgent, an extra charge of Rs3,000 would have to be made, the PIL stated.

Representing the Union government, advocate Advait Sethna told the court that even the SC had accepted that astrology was a science and many universities had included it as a subject. “Science, which is 4,800 years old, cannot be banned,” Sethna argued.

The PIL urged the authorities to ban articles, advertisements, episodes and practices promoting astrology and its related subjects like vastu, reiki, feng shui, tarot, palmistry, zodiac signs and rashifal.

“Local trains and newspapers are full of advertisements regarding astrological predictions. They misguide innocent people,” Raiyani told the court.

First of all, of course, reiki, palmistry and tarot don’t really have anything to do with astrology.

But this does speak to the question of whether we can, and even should, predict the future using astrology even if we do use specific techniques such as the Vedic traditions offer.

Why did Sandra Bullock marry Jesse James?

This whole debacle with Jesse James and the now eleven affairs he is supposed to have had during his marriage to Sandra Bullock, has me asking this question again.  Astrology provides a window into the motivation behind people’s actions, so I took a deeper look.

Sandra Bullock’s chart is not a very emotional one.  She has the Moon in reasonable and rational Aquarius, showing that her feelings (the Moon) tend to be filtered through the mind rather than the emotional body.  She has very little other water in her chart other than Saturn in Pisces, which shows a discomfort and fear (Saturn) of losing herself (Pisces), and Chiron is also in Pisces showing a wound (Chiron) in that same area.

In addition, with Venus (relating) in the changeable sign of Gemini, she is likely to need  a lot of space and air in her relationships. Chiron, the wounder and healer, is in a challenging square to Venus in Sandra’s chart which suggests that relationships are for her the greatest teachers but can sometimes lead to emotionally wrenching experiences.

Sandra met Jesse James in December 2003 when  transiting Pluto (transformation and compulsion) formed a challenging square to Chiron in Sandra’s chart and began to set off the Chiron/Venus system. Pluto transits call us deeper into the soul where we have to face parts of ourselves that have long been hidden, and Pluto transits to Venus also bring about intense relationship experiences that can be very difficult but which in the end teach us something about ourselves. Pluto transits to Chiron often have the effect of healing a deep wound within us, but can also serve to expose that wound so that it can be dealt with.

For the two years that Sandra and Jesse were dating, Pluto was engaged in this dance with Venus and Chiron in Sandra’s chart, stimulating her desire to heal (Chiron) her relationship issues (Venus).  Sandra was also in her “Neptune Square” between 2004 and 2005 during their relationship.  The Neptune Square occurs when transiting Neptune forms a challenging square to Neptune in our chart at around age 40-43, a planetary cycle that often creates confusion and the potential to be deluded (it also brings us more deeply into a spiritual life if handled properly).

When Sandra and Jesse married in July 2005,  she was in the middle of not only the Neptune Square, but also the Uranus Opposition (when transiting Uranus is opposite Uranus in the natal chart, stimulating rebellion and the desire for change).  These two cycles occur at the same time for everyone, making the early 40s a huge time of change and potentially chaotic.  The fact that Jesse James was different than anyone else she had ever dated (Uranus) and somewhat mysterious with a dark past (Pluto), as well as exceedingly romantic (Neptune)  made him an ideal candidate for this phase of Sandra’s life.

I can’t say I haven’t made similar choices in my own life, but I am happy to say that every bad choice I made helped to prepare me for the healthy and happy relationship I have now.  The mistake we make is in believing that our detours are errors instead of seeing them as learning experiences.  Of course this is much easier to accomplish when you’re not living in the goldfish bowl of Hollywood celebrity.

Sandra Bullock, America’s Sweetheart

Sandra BullockI don’t think anyone is very surprised that Jesse James has been having an affair with a stripper and porn star, but it’s still a shocking turn of events after her Oscar win seemed to signify a period of great fortune for Sandra.  And so it is – she has Saturn sitting right on her Midheaven, the cusp of the tenth house of Career, showing that she is a hard worker and very concerned with achieving her goals.  (7/26/64, unverified time of 3:15 am, Washington DC) Sandra is the kind of person who would say “the harder I work the luckier I get.”  Transiting Pluto has been making a harmonious transit to Saturn and the Midheaven, bestowing greater power and transforming her career.

Sandra’s chart also has Mars sitting right on her ascendant, suggesting that she is fiercely independent and forthright, and Venus is there as well, revealing the attractive qualities that draw so much affection from her fans.

Transiting Uranus has been challenging the ascendant, Mars and Venus over the past year as she was filming the Blind Side and it is during this period that the affair began.  Uranus tends to foster a desire for independence and freedom, and I can imagine that under this influence Sandra may have been even more independent than usual and perhaps husband Jesse James took advantage of that independence to return to his porn star roots.  The affair had evidently been going on for nearly a year.

Sandra has some very positive transits going on, and it is likely that this event is actually luckier than it might first appear.

Landmark health care legislation passes

health care reformThe US House of Representatives passed Obama’s health care bill last night, paving the way to the bill being signed into law.

Under the opposition of Saturn to Uranus which began in the fall of 2008 and will conclude this summer, it has been virtually impossible to obtain any kind of compromise between two opposing views. In the American political landscape this has occurred not only between liberals (Uranus) and conservatives (Saturn), but also between the left and right ends of each political party. The idea of compromise has become a badge of weakness rather than a time honored tool for moving through the gridlock of politics.

President Obama ran for office on a platform of bringing opposing views together so that change could occur, but the people that voted for him seem to forget that in order to achieve that kind of unification not everyone will get exactly what they want. Liberals have disowned him over the public option, which likely would have spelled the end of insurance companies as we know it. Conservatives have disowned him over the idea that the health reform plan will cost a lot of money to implement, forgetting that our current health care system will swallow us up in any case in the next decade.

The fact is, under Pluto in Capricorn there is no way to achieve financial stability without tightening our belts a bit and facing the hard realities of our situation.

Obama has some interesting planetary transits right now. Saturn has been transiting his progressed Sun which is completing a 30-year pass through Virgo and will soon (September) enter Libra, the sign of compromise and diplomacy. Perhaps his achievement of this health care bill will open the doors for him to achieve other goals that will unite the country under one leader, something we haven’t seen for many years. That’s not likely to occur as long as Saturn and Uranus are in opposition (the last phase of that cycle occurs next summer), and the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune is sitting right on the Moon in the US chart which suggests further heartbreak and confusion on the part of the people for the next year or two.

For myself, the biggest disappointment in the healthcare bill is that it doesn’t adequately address the actual issue of healthcare and why Americans need so much of it, and is focused more on how to pay for it. As long as hospitals and medical centers are driven by a profit motive Americans will continue to pay for unnecessary tests and procedures that do little to save lives and do much to line the pockets of the medical establishment. And until we address the real causes of our poor health, which are primarily lifestyle related, costs will continue to spiral out of control.

One of the things I like to do with relationship charts is look at the progressed chart of one person and compare to the progressed chart of the other to see what’s happening in the relationship right now. Progressed Uranus in Obama’s chart is in an exact square right now to the US progressed Moon, showing a real shakeup in the attitudes and perceptions of the US people. His progressed Saturn is nearing an exact trine to the US progressed Chiron, reflecting the fact that he is forcing through (Saturn) the health care issue (Chiron). Hopefully the fact that this is a harmonious trine aspect means that the ultimate effect of this plan will be a positive one. And finally, his progressed Pluto is trine to the US progressed Sun, which reflects a transformational effect (Pluto) of the very nature of the US government (Sun).

Vernal Equinox today – the first day of Spring!

Spring EquinoxArt by Kathryn Rodenbach.

The Sun enters Aries today, marking the Vernal Equinox – the time at which the days and nights are of equal length.  The charts for the Equinoxes and Solstices are significant in predicting the energy that will be circulating over the next few months, and these charts are often used by weather forecasters as well as other prognosticators of various kinds.

The chart for the current Equinox shows an exact opposition of Saturn to the Sun, which suggests challenges and delays along with the necessity for practicality and diligence.  However, Mars in Leo is exactly trine to the Sun, a harmonious balance of active energy that helps to keep us motivated and inspired.

The Moon in this chart is in an exact square to Chiron and Neptune which suggests a certain amount of emotional intensity despite the fact that the Moon is in Taurus which tends to remain rather balanced through any kind of chaos.  But Chiron and Neptune bring about a push for emotional healing and this sometimes necessitates an eruption of feelings that have long been hidden.

The Moon is in an exact harmonious sextile to Uranus which helps to provide a level of rationality and air which will keep the emotional stuff from becoming too intense.  Overall this is not a bad chart and suggests that the period leading up to the Summer Solstice will be a time of reflection and preparation for the intensity to come at the Solstice point.

Addicted to technology

iphone addictionI’ve written about this before, but we have seen a huge surge of technology addiction since Uranus entered Pisces back in 2002, creating what we call a “mutual reception” with Neptune in Aquarius.  We call this “mutual reception” because Uranus is traveling through Pisces, the sign that is ruled by Neptune, and Neptune is in Aquarius, the sign that is ruled by Uranus.  This is a “double whammy” that connects the principles of Uranus and Neptune.

Uranus rules technology and anything new and unusual, along with radical change and the rational mind.  Neptune rules our experience of spirituality, the imagination and creativity, and the desire to lose the Self in something greater than ourselves.  With Neptune we can become addicted to that experience of losing ourselves, especially if it is pleasurable and helps us to forget (Neptune) our day-to-day life.  Uranus demands a constantly changing experience and becomes easily bored.

And then here comes the Iphone, a fabulous combination of beautiful design (Neptune) with the latest technology (Uranus).  I resisted the lure of the Iphone for over two years because of my dislike for the “evil empire” that Apple has become, but a couple of months ago I fell prey to its siren song of apps for everything and an enhanced experience of Life 2.0.  I carry my Iphone everywhere: I listen to podcasts in the bathroom, I read books on the Kindle app, I piddle around on the piano and the hammered dulcimer.  It really has become an extension of my life!

So I wasn’t surprised to read that Stanford scientists have found that the Iphone really is addictive.  But it’s not just the Iphone that’s addictive – it’s technology of all kinds.  When the line between technology (Uranus/Aquarius) and real life becomes blurry (Neptune/Pisces), we see the mutual reception between those two principles at work.  Technology addiction is a growing medical disorder and some rehab centers are offering technology addiction services along with treatment for gambling and sex addictions.
