Mercury retrograde, March 30 – April 23 2011

Mercury retrogradeMercury turns retrograde today, taking us into three weeks of reconsideration and re-evaluation with potential communication and equipment glitches.  Mercury is in Aries during this retrograde, and since Aries is the sign of action and initiation it’s not too happy when it has to look backwards and review rather than take direct action.

Retrograde periods serve a function that goes beyond creating problems in our lives: they are opportunities for do-overs.  If you didn’t get something right the first time, this is a chance to go back and do it over again.  It’s a time for reassessing our priorities, for reviewing the things we have done and the plans we have set in motion.

While it’s generally true that contracts signed and decisions made when Mercury is retrograde often require renegotiation and revision, we can’t always put our lives on hold for three weeks.  Sometimes we have to begin a job or sign an important contract when Mercury is retrograde, in which case it’s helpful to know that communication problems are likely and be prepared for that.  If you CAN avoid starting something new when Mercury is retrograde it makes life easier, but life isn’t always about things being easy.  Life urges us to grow and evolve, and along the way we will encounter bumps on the road.

Mercury retrograde periods are excellent for reassessing the past, for redoing your plans, for looking back at your goals to see where they can be realigned with your present reality and hopes for the future.  It’s a time to gather your resources so that you can emerge at the end of the retrograde with a new confidence and with improved resources.

Jupiter/Saturn and Mercury Retrogrades

Saturn opposite JupiterThis week the expansive urge of Jupiter bumps up against the contraction of Saturn for the third and final time in the current cycle.  This is the “Full Moon” phase of the cycle, the culmination of a pattern that began in 2000 with the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus.  Mundane astrologers, observing the effect of astrological patterns on nations and politics, connect the Saturn/Jupiter opposition with a crisis point or climax in global political events.

It’s hard to tell right now which planetary cycle is inspiring the political events unfolding on the ground, and I tend to think that Uranus entering Aries, being a more powerful planet in its influence, is primarily in play with the revolutionary fervor that is spreading around the world, including in the UK where hundreds of protesters rioted in London last weekend, protesting against the concentration of wealth and the reduction of goods and services for the common man.  This is very Uranian and a harbinger of what is to come over the next few years as Uranus and Pluto align in square formation.

Jupiter/Saturn alignments are often significators of financial adjustments, but stock market indices are relatively stable at the moment.  I have found that the square aspect (90 degrees) is usually more problematic than the opposition.  Oppositions create a tension, but the tension can be balanced and does not always necessitate a crisis for resolution.

However, with Mercury turning retrograde on March 30th, we are in the shadow of the retrograde which could bring about a downturn in the market.  Uranus in Aries is quite volatile anyway, and it won’t take much inspiration to create havoc in financial markets and stocks.  The retrograde turn of Mercury generally is tied to sudden reversals in the global markets.

It won’t help that Venus conjoins Chiron tomorrow and our values and the things we hold dear (Venus) are challenged by the necessity to bring healing and wisdom into our lives (Chiron).  Balance here is the key, but this is probably not the best time to get swept away in a fever of unrealistic optimism. At least not until the retrograde Mercury period is over!

Tomorrow I’ll analyze the riots over the weekend in London and how they tie in with the global unrest that is unfolding as Uranus moves closer to a square to Pluto, fulfilling all of the astrological praophecies.

Around the table with Dharmaruci

Having sat and chatted around the table with Dharmaruci last summer when I was in England, I know how interesting a conversation with him can be.  Dharmaruci runs an astrology blog called Astrotabletalk that is one of the more interesting ones out there.

Now you too can enjoy this fascinating discussion of astrology and magic.  Such as this exchange:

D – I think of astrology as a system of knowledge that respects and uses all our faculties. Science is very strong on rationality and sensation (air and earth) but not very respectful of intuition and feeling (fire and air). . . and so to me, astrology is a more complete system of knowledge than science. Jung saw astrology as the summation of ancient knowledge — as an umbrella, if you like, that can incorporate all other systems. A proper relationship between astrology and science would see science as a specialisation within this broader tradition. What we have instead is a Sorcerer’s Apprentice situation: We have many brilliant scientific inventions, but havoc is being wreaked within the psyche because the apprentice has taken over, pretending to knowledge outside of his areas of competence.
H – And yet many people would argue that the ‘truths’ of science can be tested and proved, while the ‘truths’ of astrology are more subjective. . . .
D – Astrology works, but it can’t be explained in scientific terms. Like science, it is empirical, it is based on observation, but its truths are not statistical. They don’t rely on laboratories and ‘double-blind’ tests. They are the truths of a novelist, or of a work of art. It would seem ridiculous to try to reduce the insights of a novelist to a lab situation…but that’s what the scientists want to do with astrology in order to discredit it. It is more than a Sorcerer’s Apprentice situation: the apprentice has become bold enough to stage a coup!
R – Yes, there are many things that are real and ‘true’ that can’t be tested by the scientific method. For example, there is no scientific test for whether you love someone or not!
D – No, you can’t prove it in a scientific sense. Or look at evolution. It’s an example of a theory that has become an accepted fact in science, but you can’t observe it or test it.
R – Well, you can observe it. There are moths in the black country [the industrial midlands of England] which changed their wing coloring over the course of a few generations as a result of the pollution in the atmosphere, in order to hide from their predators.
D – Yes, you can observe the odd smaller change, which supports the theory. But evolution involves massive change and development, and you can’t observe that within a human timescale. Don’t get me wrong: I think that the process of evolution does occur, it is true, but it can’t be proved in a scientific sense. And I don’t think the mechanism is understood yet either – I think evolution happens far more quickly than a process of natural selection and random mutation alone would seem to allow for. This is an area where scientists are willing to forgo their usual criteria of strict observational laboratory experiments and still accept it as truth — yet in another area, like homeopathy, for example, they will apply endless tests to prove it is untrue and thus reject it as having any validity.
Evolution, like many scientific theories, is now seen as an absolute truth. We have developed a new Creation Myth – Evolution – that reflects the tribal myths we live by.

RIP Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor died yesterday after a long battle with congestive heart failure and a lifetime of health problems.  Although she had a long and successful film career her romantic life was plagued by scandal and divorce.  She was the best of friends to Michael Jackson and many in the gay community, and an earlier fighter in the battle against HIV.  She was a woman who was bigger than life in nearly every way.

Astrologically, Ms. Taylor (chart here)  had the Sun in Pisces and opposed by Neptune, a Neptunian “double whammy” since Pisces is ruled by Neptune, resulting in a dual connection between the Sun (the Self) and the Pisces/Neptune principle of transcendence and creativity.  It’s no wonder Ms. Taylor loved artists and musicians, and no wonder that she was blessed with so much creativity herself.

Ms. Taylor’s Sun was flanked in a triple conjunction by Mars and Mercury, and while Mars conjunct the Sun can often bestow a strong energy force, in Pisces that energy is dissipated. Mars is also opposed by Neptune, which doubles this dissipation of the life force and normally requires a great deal of physical activity to keep the Mars energy flowing and to strengthen the will that Mars is so much a part of.   The Sun/Mercury conjunction gave her a brilliant intelligence that was such a gift in her acting skills, and the location of all three planets in the third house of communication and Neptune in the ninth house of the media and entertainment industry perfectly reflects her long career.

Neptune is associated with glamour and shapeshifting, and is often found in the charts of successful actors as a result since that shapeshifting ability makes it easy to slip in and out of roles.  There is also a powerful romantic force when Neptune aspects the Sun, although it can be associated with delusion and illusion as well.  Neptune opposite Mars, especially in Pisces, often shows someone who surrenders reality for the sake of an illusion or romantic hope.

Ms. Taylor’s romantic life was complicated, and we see that she had a conjunction of Venus to Uranus – both elements that are symbolic of an intense need for freedom and individualism in one’s life and in one’s relationships.  With Venus in the fourth house of family and home, she would have craved a happy home life, but Uranus in a nearly exact conjunction to Venus demands space and separation and often brings about those separations in sudden and dramatic ways.

Complicating her emotional life was the fact that her Moon was in passionate and dramatic Scorpio, and it was opposed by Chiron, the planet of healing and wounding.  The Moon represents our inner child, and an opposition of Chiron to the Moon suggests painful experiences in childhood that instill wounds that take a lifetime or more to heal.  Ms. Taylor’s mother put her to work as an actor at the age of 3 and once she was in the Hollywood system of the time, at the age of 9, she lost her childhood and much of her life.

Jupiter was in Leo in her chart, a placement that tends towards recklessness but also a big and generous heart.  Jupiter square Chiron is often associated with accidents, and the Moon connection suggests that her many accidents were a subconscious route to the expression of her emotional wounds. Ms. Taylor’s health problems began at age 12 when she fell off a horse, and continued throughout her life.

At the time of her death the transiting North Node (describing the evolution of our personal destiny) formed an exact square to Ms. Taylor’s natal nodes, and transiting Mars activated the North Node in her progressed chart.  These nodal transits generally coincide with major shifts in our life path, and suggest that her work here on earth was finished, and that it was time for her to move on to her next assignment.

Elizabeth Taylor brought beauty and grace to everyone who knew her, and all of us who saw her on the screen as well.  Her passion and kindness is her lasting legacy and she will never be forgotten.

The US Saturn Return

It’s no secret that the United States is not the superpower it was even twenty years ago, when American manufacturers clothed people all over the world, and American farms provided grain and milk to assuage global hunger.  I would argue that the actual turning point came in 2006, when the US progressed Mars turned retrograde and the drive of the country began to weaken and dissipate.

Today is the second phase of America’s Saturn return, the time when transiting Saturn returns to its place in the birthchart of the nation.  You can read more here about America’s Saturn return from the first phase which began last October.  Meanwhile, there’s plenty of evidence that the US is being tested, including a cover story in Time Magazine last week entitled “Yes, America is in decline.”

Saturn squares the Sun in the chart for the United States, so the Saturn Return means that transiting is also squaring Saturn in the US chart which sits in the seventh house of partnership and open enemies.  Who are our allies?  Who are our enemies?  Where is our power being eaten alive by enemies within the country?  These are all good questions for the Saturn Return, and questions being asked today in the US.

Spring Equinox, March 20 2011

The Vernal or Spring Equinox takes place at 7:41 pm tonight (EDT) and it looks like the intensity will continue to ramp up for the next few months.  The Equinoxes and Solstices occur when the Sun moves into the Cardinal signs: Aries for spring, Cancer for summer, Libra for fall, and Capricorn for winter.

Aries is the first sign in the zodiac and as such it is the sign of initiation and the point of beginning.  There is a burst of energy at the Aries point: an unbridled explosion of pure potential and action, and this is the energy that we are experiencing when we talk about “Spring Fever.”

The chart for the equinoxes and solstices are often used for weather forecasting, and judging by the chart for the Spring Equinox it looks like we are in for more intense weather.  That’s nothing new, the Winter Solstice chart last year included a Full Moon, and the Summer Solstice  and Fall Equinox charts were also complex.

This equinox chart shows the Sun, at zero degrees Aries, in a nearly exact conjunction to Uranus, the planet of shocking and sudden events.  Ceres is nearly exactly conjunct Neptune, combining the watery mysteries of Neptune with the delicate eco-balance of Ceres.  This suggests more flooding in some areas, although with both planets in dry Aquarius there may also be severe droughts in some areas.

Saturn and Jupiter are very close to their exact opposition, which culminates at the end of March and there is a tension between the contracting force of Saturn and the expansive drive of Jupiter. The Moon in Libra sides with Saturn, anxiously seeking form and structure in the midst of the chaos, but Aries Mercury opposes the Moon and the mind takes precedence over the heart.

It’s been clear to me that the planetary dynamics over the past couple of years were much more personal – this year’s alignments are dealing with bigger events over which we have little or no control.

The equinox points are balance points since neither day nor night has precedence over the other.  Many of us have accomplished huge transformational changes in our own lives to empower us and help us to become more aligned with the direction our soul is taking towards awakening and clarification.  Those gifts will remain with us if we remain conscious and aware, and focused on that which is real – the center of calm at the heart of the storm.

Oh yes, and happy Ostara and Purim, too.

The Virgo Full SuperMoon, March 19 2011

SupermoonThe Moon will be full today, Saturday March 19th, at 2:10 pm EDT.  The Moon is full in Virgo, and it is opposite the Pisces Sun in the sky.  The Virgo/Pisces polarity relates to a blending of our experience of life in the material world (Virgo) with our desire to seek a more transcendent experience (Pisces).

As you probably know, this Moon is a Supermoon (® Richard Nolle) and is closer to the Earth than other times of the year (see this earlier article for more information)

When the Moon is full in that solilunar opposition, the influence of the Moon is more powerful, revealing our emotions and instincts and our hidden reactions to unseen events.  The Moon is invisible in daylight, and it is only in the darkness of the unconscious that our deeply ingrained emotional patterns come to light.

This Full Moon is at the end of Virgo which requires an orderly and methodical approach to the realm of feelings.  There is an attention to detail here, and a need to care for the details of life in a body, even as the Pisces Sun urges us to transcend this wordly life for something more magnificent.

But another energetic element is at work in the chart for the Full Moon – the incongruity between the Aries influence (Uranus, Jupiter and Mercury) of aggression and defense combined with the Pisces influence (Sun, Mars and Chiron) that seeks harmony and flow.  Under the influence of this Full Moon we are being called not only to honor the daily rituals and routines (Virgo) of life and self-care, but also to remain strong and vigilant (Aries) while maintaining a grounded (Virgo) attunement to the spiritual forces (Pisces) that keep us evolving as spiritual beings having a human experience.

The Full Moon in Virgo (and therefore the Sun as well)  is approaching an opposition to Uranus, which suggests that even though the Virgo Full Moon has the potential to bring us back down to earth, Uranus will apply more pressure on us to break free of restrictions and become liberated from our obligations.  Virgo’s cautious nature and respect for rules doesn’t respond well to the rulebreaking nature of Uranus, and this Full Moon could bring about some interesting inner turmoil especially since Mercury, Virgo’s traditional ruler, is opposed by Saturn and a celestial education is sure to be applied in some way.

This sort of oppositional tension can be balanced, but it often takes a great deal of attention and awareness to see where in our lives we need to find greater grounding into the material world (Virgo), and where we may have fallen into a rut and need to break free of old patterns (Sun/Uranus) to achieve true bliss (Pisces).

On the 20th the Sun enters Aries and the conjunction to Uranus culminates, so this fever for change will continue for a day or two after the Full Moon.  This Sun/Uranus conjunction is embedded in the chart of the Vernal Equinox and will be affecting us for the next few months, so be prepared for some bumpy roads ahead! Nate Dogg: The effect of Chiron and Uranus on health

Nate Dogg diedDisclaimer: I am not a medical professional, nor do I have training in the medical fields.  However, I have a strong interest in the way energy works in the body as described by astrological symbolism.

I had never heard of Nate Dogg, who recently died at the age of 41 after suffering from a series of strokes, until I heard about his passing on the news.  It was his age, 41, which grabbed my attention since that is the age at which transiting Uranus opposes natal Uranus in everyone’s life.  This is the classic “midlife crisis” transit in which we are forced to reassess everything in our life and when we tend to make big and sudden changes.

Uranus, being the ruler of electricity, also has an effect on the way our bodies manage the electrical charges of the nervous system.  Many people going through the “Uranus Opposition” as we call it experience a flood of kundalini energy, known as the “kundalini opening,” which can put stress on the nervous system and result in a high degree of anxiety.

Nate Dogg (born as Nathaniel Hale on August 19, 1969, time unknown) was born with the Sun in Leo and locked in a tight square to Neptune.  This is the same Sun/Neptune square that we see in President Obama’s chart, and while it affords a high degree of creativity it also suggests someone who has  difficulty (Neptune)  establishing an identity (Sun) for themselves.

Mr. Dogg also had Saturn, planet of testing and challenge, tightly opposed to his Scorpio Moon which reveals a deep sense of isolation and a propensity towards depression.  That strong Saturn placement also denotes someone who works hard and can be very disciplined at the core.  While the Sun represents the physical heart in medical astrology, the Moon represents the emotional heart and often people with a stressed Moon develop heart problems as a result.

Mars is in his chart was in cheerful Sagittarius – a placement which typically shows a high degree of motivation (Mars) to reach beyond the boundaries of that which appears possible  (Sagittarius).  People with Mars in Sagittarius have a strong drive to be cheerful and to maintain an optimistic viewpoint, regardless of the circumstances, and this influence provided him with a nice counterpoint to the challenge of the Saturn/Moon opposition.

The New York Times wrote that “his blend of cocksureness [Leo Sun] and haunted melancholy [Scorpio Moon opposite Saturn] became a [hip hop] genre staple.”

Mr. Dogg was plagued with personal and health issues.  He first suffered a stroke in December of 2007 or January 2008 (news reports vary) at the age of 38 which paralyzed the left side of body (corresponding to the right brain, the creative self).   After he had almost completely recovered, he was charged in June 2008 for stalking and threatening his estranged wife, and then he suffered a second stroke in September 2008.

Chiron opposes Uranus in his chart, a dynamic that was quite common between the early 1950s and the mid 1980s, but no other age group has it.  This opposition pits the planet of wounding and healing (Chiron) against the electrical planet of radical behavior and sudden change (Uranus) and often instills a high degree of energetic sensitivity.  With the Chiron/Uranus opposition there is often an overabundance of electromagnetic energy that needs to be balanced in some ways.  Many times people with this opposition become drawn to energy healing modalities such as Reiki, both for themselves and as a tool for helping to heal others.

In Mr. Dogg’s chart Jupiter conjoined Uranus and also opposed Chiron, expanding and exacerbating the challenge of the opposition.  The combination of Jupiter with Uranus can inflame the radical tendencies of both planets, and then the job of Chiron (which was also retrograde in his chart and therefore operated more intensely) to facilitate the healing of the psycho-emotional wounds of the soul becomes more difficult.  Jupiter’s placement there, in the chart of someone who may not have been particularly introspective or spiritually-oriented, encourages more of an acting-out of inner urges rather than finding the internal balance that is necessary for growth to occur.

Mr. Dogg’s progressed Sun conjoined Uranus at the time of his stroke in 2007, and over the next four years progressed to interact with the entire Uranus/Jupiter/Chiron system in his chart.  Progressions of the Sun to the natal chart tend to illuminate the issues of the chart to bring them to the forefront of consciousness.   His progressed Sun was exactly square to his progressed Mars (aggression) at the time, and transiting Jupiter had just entered Capricorn and lit the flame for the whole dynamic to erupt.  The presence of progressed Mars in the mix suggests that there was a tinderbox of unexpressed rage and pain just waiting to be released, and if you google Mr. Dogg’s lyrics this will not surprise you.

Mr. Dogg made a nearly complete recovery, so presumably once the energy of the stroke dissipated his health returned.  With the progressed Sun continuing to light up the recklessness of the natal Jupiter/Uranus conjunction, he chased his ex-wife down the highway and threatened to kill her.  At the time, transiting Uranus (radical behavior) was sitting right on his natal Pluto, a transit that often causes us to feel that matters are of a life or death nature, and transiting Mars was sitting right on his Sun, bringing up the rage that he was not so easily able to express.

By September 2008, when Mr. Dogg had his second stroke, his progressed Sun had caught up to his progressed Uranus in an exact conjunction, lighting up the tinder box once again and creating a short circuit of electrical impulses in his body to cause a stroke.  Progressed Sun and Uranus were also exactly opposite progressed Chiron, and this stroke was more intense than the first one.  Mr. Dogg reportedly ended up in a coma with both a breathing and feeding tube.

Over the next few years, the planets of the Cardinal Drama that we have been discussing here on this blog interacted with this challenging system in Mr. Dogg’s chart.  His death on March 15th was blamed on complications from the strokes, but the astrological implications are clear.  At the time of his death, Mr. Dogg’s progressed Sun had just moved past an exact opposition to Chiron in the natal chart, and transiting Pluto was in a nearly exact square to both Chiron and the progressed Sun.  Pluto transits take us deep into the soul, and often bring experiences that take us into the realm of the Underworld.

All of this does not mean that Mr. Dogg was fated to die of a series of strokes.  I suspect that he was locked in an inner world of rage and depression that ate him up from within and from which he was unable or unwilling to extricate himself.  We can see this in his lyrics, which describe in detail the story we have used astrological symbolism to tell.
