Chinese jobs use “star signs” to discriminate

chinese astrology job discriminationWhile I always love to see astrology getting some press in mainstream news, the first clue that someone doesn’t know a thing about astrology is when they call the zodiac “star signs.”  The twelve signs of the zodiac represent an image of the apparent path of the Sun as it travels around the Earth, from our perspective.  The signs are relevant to the Sun, not the stars.

::rant over::

A Chinese firm has decided Scorpios and Virgos are too moody and critical, telling job seekers with those star signs they need not apply. Capricorns, Pisces and Libras, on the other hand, are welcome.

The unusual requirements are part of a job ad posted at a university in the central city of Wuhuan by an English language training company, and have generated a storm of online controversy since they were uncovered this week.

“We don’t want Scorpios or Virgos, and Capricorns, Pisces and Libras will be prioritised,” the job spec reads, according to the Chutian Metropolis Daily, a local newspaper in Wuhan.

The report quoted a woman in charge at the unnamed firm as saying she had done research and found Scorpios had strong personalities and were moody, while Virgos were hugely critical and did not stay in one job for long.

“I hired people with those two star signs before, and they either liked quarrelling with colleagues or they could not do the job for long,” the woman, surnamed Xia, said.

As my brilliant readers know, the article is talking about Sun signs, the sign that the Sun was traveling through at the time the individuals involved were born.  Sun signs are just one piece of the birthchart, which contains an intricate collection of infinite personality possibilities.  Someone with a Scorpio Sun sign can have Pisces rising and a Libra Moon and behave less like a Scorpio than another individual with a Pisces Sun sign and Scorpio rising with the Moon conjunct Pluto, Scorpio’s ruler.

I won’t dispute the fact that Scorpio types do like to argue, or that Virgo types can be critical,although Virgo types typically don’t like change and would actually tend to make great employees because they are so detail oriented.  And Scorpio, being a fixed sign, can be extremely loyal and passionate about their jobs.  I do find it interesting that these Chinese are using western astrological signs rather than the Chinese ones.  Would a Dog make a better employee than a Dragon?

I shouldn’t complain though – if this catches on and companies begin hiring on the basis of astrology that will really open up the job market for us astrologers!

Sunday Inspiration: A spell to commit Pronoia

thanks to Rob Breszny for this poem by psychotherapist Jennifer Welwood.

Willing to experience aloneness,
I discover connection everywhere;
Turning to face my fear,
I meet the warrior who lives within;
Opening to my loss,
I am given unimaginable gifts;
Surrendering into emptiness,
I find fullness without end.
Each condition I flee from pursues me.
Each condition I welcome transforms me
And becomes itself transformed
Into its radiant jewel-like essence.
I bow to the one who has made it so,
Who has crafted this Master Game;
To play it is pure delight,
To honor it is true devotion.

Pronoia is the philosophy that the Universe is arranged for our ultimate benefit – the opposite of Paranoia which is the suspicion that the Universe is out to get us.  Although the word was first coined in the early 1980s, back in the mid-1950s JD Salinger wrote ”I’m a kind of paranoiac in reverse. I suspect people of plotting to make me happy.”[3]

Sagittarius New Moon eclipse, November 25 2011 PLUS Mercury turns retrograde

Sagittarius New Moon November 25Art by Sally J. Smith, from Silver Rockets.  The New Moon occurred a few hours ago, but we are still in its influence for the next day or two.  Although astronomically this is technically a partial eclipse, because the lunation was 12 degrees away from the Nodes of the Moon, that is a bit too far to have much astrological impact.

Like all New Moons, the Sun is conjunct the Moon, fusing the emotional instincts (Moon) with the conscious identity (Sun) to create a powerful new beginning.  Every New Moon in the lunar cycle provides us with an opportunity to begin again with a clean slate.  Under the Sagittarius New Moon we move from the darkness of Scorpio and its emphasis on the underworld of Soul experiences into the lighter framework of the Sagittarian need for expansion and a sense of meaning about life.

There are four planets in Sagittarius right now, so the Sagittarian emphasis is strong.  In addition, Jupiter (the planet that rules Sag) is in an exact trine to the New Moon which gives us a Double Whammy (technical astrological term) of Jupiter/Sun/Moon energy. Now is the time to forge a vision that expands your life, your consciousness, your mind.  Eliminate from your being the need to stay rooted in the past or any idea of who you think you are.

Jupiter and Sagittarius work with our belief systems, helping us to understand more about life and about what gives our life meaning, but those ideologies are not meant to be static or confined under the Jupiterian influence.  They are meant to continue expanding, taking us into ever broadening circles of knowledge and wisdom.  Chiron (wounding and healing) interacts harmoniously with Jupiter this week, facilitating the easing of the energy blocks that our wounded places create, thus facilitating the expansion of our lives into greater abundance.

Over the past week or so Mars has been aligned in a Grand Trine in Earth, first with Jupiter and now with Pluto.  There is potential for greater stabilization now, a great boon when dealing with the pressured expansion of this strong Sagittarian influence.  We also see a trine from Saturn to Neptune: from form and structure (Saturn) to the dissolving of that form into bliss (Neptune).

We do have a challenging square from Chiron to the New Moon now which suggests that in order to benefit from these planetary alignments we will have to allow ourselves to be healed of any emotional dissonance which holds us back.  These Chironic experiences are not always comfortable, but they are necessary for personal growth and evolution.  In this context, as part of the New Moon, it becomes easier to see these growth experiences as helping us to achieve the big Jupiter/Sagittarius vision.

We also have Mercury turning retrograde today.  Mercury will remain retrograde for three weeks during which our ideas and goals are likely to be more difficult to achieve.  Mercury is in Sagittarius now, and Sag tends to dislike being held back by a retrograde.  Retrograde periods are important  because they force us to go back over areas of our lives or experiences that may need more attention before they come to completion, and Sagittarius prefers to be free from any restrictions.  This means that this Mercury Rx period could be more challenging than some in terms of bringing communication snafus and equipment problems.

While Mercury is retrograde see if you can find areas of your life that need to be re-done, re-viewed or re-assessed rather than beginning a new project.  This Sag New Moon inspires us to think big and create great goals, but there will be a few weeks of bumpy starts before we can really move forward with those goals.

Blogversary and Blogvacation

This week marks the sixth anniversary of this blog.  Until recently, I posted just about every day and it has been an incredible way to meet people from around the world and share astrological information.

Perhaps it is my second Saturn Return, but I am feeling a bit burned out.  I am going to give myself a two-week blog vacation and will return in early December.  There are six years’ worth of archives, though, so please satisfy your astro obsession in the archives of this blog and by visiting my friends who are blogrolled in the sidebar.

I will still be posting astrological updates on my Facebook page and will probably post for the New Moon coming up next week.  Have a great two weeks and I’ll be back soon. :)

The astrology of the Penn State scandal

On November 4, 2011 a grand jury indicted Jerry Sandusky, former assistant football coach at Penn State University, on 40 counts of sexual abuse against young boys.  Evidently these assaults or advances had been going on since 1994 despite the knowledge of other officials with the football team.

What is even more shocking is that Sandusky apparently used a charity that he founded (The Second Mile) to find the young boys (aged 11-14) for his misadventures which he is now calling “horseplay.”  Sandusky is married and he and his wife adopted six children and fostered many others before founding the charity. I am not a qualified psychologist, but the fact that Sandusky was able to continue this double life for nearly 20 years without detection would seem to suggest some sort of psychological pathology.  Let’s see what his chart says:

Jerry Sandusky (born January 26, 1944, time unknown, Washington Pennsylvania) is a double Aquarius: both the Sun and Moon are in that sign of rational thinking and reason.  We don’t know his birth time so we can’t tell his ascendant which would tell us more about his personality, but the Sun in Sandusky’s chart is opposed by Pluto (obsession, compulsion and experiences that transform us).  In their highest form the stress and challenges of Pluto/Sun aspects empower us and strengthen our will.  In individuals who are less self-reflective, this aspect can suggest an individual with deep-seated power issues and compulsions.

The kind of intense drama that is necessitated by Pluto/Sun aspects can be very difficult for Aquarian types who tend to dislike being dragged into the underworld of emotional chaos, and sometimes there is a split in the personality as a result.  This split can manifest as someone who attracts relationships with people who are Plutonic in nature, or it can manifest as someone who themselves has split the dark Plutonian side from the airy Aquarian side.

It is not uncommon for Pluto/Sun people to have experienced abuse of various types, and often this is sexual abuse.  Researchers have found that most sexual predators were themselves abused, and then perpetuate the abuse on others.  Sandusky’s Pluto/Sun opposition falls within a degree of the nodes of the Moon, the signposts that point from our past to our future, with the Sun conjunct the South Node (the past) and Pluto conjunct the North Node (the future).  There is a tremendous force of nature with Pluto conjunct the North Node, as the intensely transformative energy of Pluto pulls us relentlessly forward into our future.  This is a man who could accomplish great things in his life, and in fact he had a reputation of doing just that.  But he was undone by the compulsions that remained locked in the subconscious with no accepetable outlet.

Sandusky’s chart shows five retrograde planets, or six if we include Chiron.  That is an exceptional number of retrogrades (only 4% of the population have five retrograde planets in their chart), and suggests someone whose attention is turned so inward that the outer world becomes simply a reflection of their inner experience.  When we combine this with the fact that Sandusky’s chart lacks the water element which would induce compassion and empathy, it is easier to understand how he is coming across in interviews over the eruption of the scandal.

Mars represents our drives, and the sexual drive falls under that category along with other drives and instincts.  Sandusky’s Mars is in Gemini, which is a dual sign that is sometimes associated with sexual experimentation because Gemini has a hunger for a variety of experiences.  The fact that Mars conjoins Uranus, the planet of radical behavior and also the root of the word Uranian which is sometimes defined as the “third sex,” adds another layer to the idea that Sandusky’s sexuality is complex and requires a great deal of stimulation and new experiences.

It also doesn’t help him that Saturn (retrograde, signifying a deep self-criticism) opposes his Venus (relationships), bestowing an insecurity which often needs constant reassurance of one’s loveability and value.  Yet we also see a nearly exact Grand Trine in air, with Mars/Uranus in a trine to Neptune and the Sun/Pluto/Node system turning the Grand Trine into a Kite formation.  Grand Trines are supremely harmonious and they create ease in life, and an airy Grand Trine may suggest an individual who relies on reasoning and rationalization to avoid responsibility (earth) and feelings (water).  This is especially true for someone like Sandusky who is a double Aquarian with the powerful rationality of that sign, and who lacks the easy flow of emotion that the element of water would provide.

What makes the Penn State scandal really shocking is the complicity of the judges and police in the cover-up.  I won’t detail these events but you can read the whole sordid story here.

Sunday inspiration and planetary news

earth grand trineThis week’s inspiration is the Grand Trine in Earth that is blessing us from the heavens over the next couple of weeks.  A Grand Trine occurs when three (or more) planets align in a triangular formation, dividing the circle of the zodiac into thirds.  The number three is a perfect number: it cannot be subdivided and creates a perfect balance.

Astrologically, the trine formation promotes ease and harmony, with each influence flowing into the next.  Grand Trines in earth encourage stability and security, with a practical application for all of our ideas (air), feelings (water) and excitement (Fire).

Pluto in Capricorn was first in a trine formation to Jupiter in Taurus early in 2011, and this is the second phase of that cycle.  Jupiter, as King of the Gods, encourages us to seek experiences that are larger than ourselves and when harmonized with Pluto, that process becomes easier and achieves greater magnification.  This is an excellent dynamic for manifestation.

Over the next two weeks or so Mars in Virgo will get into the act.  Mars celebrates the inspiration and fire that comes from the belly and provides motivation for our goals and aspirations, but in Virgo Mars is not particularly dynamic.  Mars in Virgo prefers to take care of the details, but the trines from Jupiter and Pluto encourages us to expand our view (Jupiter) and unleash the power (Pluto) that lies within us.

When a planet opposes another planet that is a part of a Grand Trine that formation becomes a Kite, and we have Chiron right now in opposition to Mars and serving as the fulcrum for the Kite formation.  The opposition contains stress and tension that helps to motivate the Grand Trine into action, so it actually is helpful in the process of personal growth.

This formation over the next week or two provides us with an opportunity to manifest our dreams and wishes into earthly form: to create plans (Mars in Virgo) that will expand our lives (Jupiter) in ways that bring us into greater alignment with our empowered Self (Pluto).  It’s an unfortunate astrological fact, though, that while challenging planetary aspects hit us over the head without our having to participate, harmonious aspects require action on our part in order to be helpful in our personal lives.

Full Moon in Taurus, November 10, 2011

Full moon Taurus November 2011photos stolen from Beth Owl’s Daughter. Since she is a friend she probably won’t mind!  The Moon will reach its fullness in Taurus at 3:16 pm Eastern time (7:16 pm GMT) on November 10, 2011.  The Sun is in Scorpio, and with the climax of the lunar cycle at the Full Moon a tension exists between the solar conscious mind, currently influenced by Scorpio, and the instincts of the lunar principle in Taurus.

The Taurus/Scorpio polarity offers a primal dance between Mars (traditional ruler of Scorpio) and Venus (traditional ruler of Taurus).  Mars is aggressive, assertive, rough, defensive, protective; Venus is soft, yielding, flowing, sensitive.  Where Scorpio is aggressive in its need to eliminate and procreate, Taurus longs for stability and security. These two sides of our nature are both equally important, yet for many of us they battle in our psyche and require periodic adjustments to achieve a balance that will offer us some peace.  Because Scorpio and Taurus are both fixed signs that do not adjust easily, there is greater tension in this polarity than in most of the other signs in opposition (Leo and Aquarius is the other fixed pair).

I like to think of Earth as being a ruler of Taurus, since Taurus embodies the love of Earth, gardening, and all things natural. And Pluto is the modern ruler of Scorpio.  So we are also seeing here the polarity between Pluto, the Lord of the Underworld, and Gaia, the mother of all living things. Life and death – generation and regeneration.  These are no small factors in the course of a life, and they are the primal factors underlying this Full Moon.

With the Full Moon being the peak of the cycle, we are at the peak of our manifesting power now.  Questions to ask in this Full Moon would include: “Where am I sacrificing comfort for a deeper experience of life?”  ”Where are my security needs interfering with my desire for a life of real meaning?” “In what ways am I allowing my emotional dramas to sabotage genuine relationships that last?” “Where have I given my power over to others?”

The chart for this Full Moon features a conjunction of Mercury (the mind and thought process) to Venus (love and relating), both in the expansive sign of Sagittarius.  This helps us to find the larger perspective and embrace those around us as we find the internal balance promised by the Full Moon.  Mars, at the very last degree of Leo where it is finishing up the work of solo life and personal expression, is opposing Chiron (the Soul Healer®) and Neptune (the Soul Teacher) so we know that anything that occurs at this time will have a significant and lasting effect on us at the personal level.

for (nearly) daily planetary updates, visit my Facebook and Twitter pages.

Above all, Full Moon periods (for a day or two before and after the lunation as well as the event itself) are times of emotional fullness and power.  They are never the best times to try to control our world with the mind, and this is even less so under the Taurus/Scorpio polarity.  So celebrate the fullness of your experience, and dance in the richness of the emotional world in which you live, no matter what it brings you.

Neptune and Chiron turn direct, and other planetary news this week

Chiron and Neptune turn directNeptune and Chiron both change direction in a few days after traveling retrograde since earlier this year, which means their (apparent) motion has slowed to a virtual standstill as they prepare to move forward again.  These two have been tied together since early in 2009, and although the exact conjunction was complete in 2010, since then the two have been within three degrees of each other. When the Soul Healer (Chiron) and the Soul Teacher (Neptune) get together, you know there is some serious internal work to be done and we are likely to find that to be true over the next week or so when both planets change their apparent direction (planets don’t really move backwards, but because we observe the movement of the planets from earth they sometimes appear to change direction).

Over the next few days we have another smaller, but still important planetary cycle involving the opposition (180 degrees) of Mars to both Chiron and Neptune.  Mars represents our drive and our desires; it inspires and motivates us to achieve our wishes and dreams.  It’s the aggressive force, and when blocked it can turn angry and frustrated.  Mars is in Leo now where it particularly wants to have its own way and resists losing control, but over the next few days Mars will be opposed by Neptune.

Neptune is the transcendent urge – it inspires us to seek experiences that go beyond the boundaries of our day-to-day reality, and it tends to blur and soften the urges of Mars.  This can be confusing if we are determined to get our way, but if we use this time to seek the wisdom of the soul instead of the ego during this time we can achieve a greater sense of unity and harmony.

Mars moves into Virgo on the 9th and the aggressive instinct will immediately become more modest and less bombastic, which will be a big help with the opposition of Chiron to Mars.  Chiron’s role is to clear our emotional and energetic blocks so that we can see with new eyes.  Chiron bestows wisdom and awareness, and when it interacts with Mars there can be a release of any frustration and anger that has been clogging up our ability to see our lives with clarity.

As with any important Mars cycle, adequate exercise to release any excess energy will assist us in easier integration.

My Saturn Return ate my Skywatch

At least that’s what I’m blaming it on.  Those of you on my mailing list already know this story, but after spending over two hours writing the November Skywatch a template glitch ate the entire thing before it could be posted.  Thanks to those of you who suggested writing the article in a Word document and then transferring it into the website  - I will definitely do that next time!  The weird thing is I kept saving the document because I had a feeling something was going to happen.  Anyway… Saturn transits tend to create delays and disappointments and events that frustrate us, all in the name of keeping one’s nose to the grindstone. My chart has Saturn, Sun and Neptune all in a nice little triad and while Saturn has completed the transit to my Saturn and Sun it is now sitting right on my Neptune.  A very apt significator for the confusion of the disappearance into the ethers of my writing (Neptune rules fogs, mists, illusion and all things confusing, as well as the higher aspects of transcendence.)

But I will make up for it by posting everything that WOULD have been in Skywatch here at Astrological Musings.

During the month of November there are still no major interactions between the outer planets to create havoc, which means that any planetary transits to our own chart will be singular rather than the influence of a collective.  It also means that we are likely not to have any significantly huge global events, so this continues to be a time of rest and rehabilitation as we gear up for the fun with Uranus and Pluto in 2012.

Neptune turns direct on November 9th after traveling retrograde since the summer.  Since mid-October Neptune has been virtually stationary, shining its laser beam of inspirational light on us, and that will continue until late in November.  Neptune urges us to transcend the boundaries of our ordinary day-to-day world, but can also lead us into confusion and delusion so care must be taken to honor that line between them.

Venus and Mercury both move into Sagittarius today, lightening the mood and bringing us out of the Scorpionic darkness into the more social season of adventure and travel.  But both planets are in a square to Chiron over the next couple of days which may bring us into experiences of old wounds and deep feelings that perhaps we would rather ignore.  Recognizing that feelings are just energy is a big help in allowing that energy to simply flow through and be released, and this is the Chironic process of healing.  That process will be made easier by the trine of Mercury and Venus to Uranus, the planet of innovation and new ideas.  As we open up to new ways of looking at the world the old wounds fall away effortlessly, releasing us into a new future.

So far so good!  Stay tuned for more planetary guidance.
