Sunday inspiration from Oprah

Oprah inspirational quotesArtwork by Jerrod Maruyama.

I’m not embarrassed to say that over the last 20 years I have derived some of my greatest inspiration from Oprah, and have learned a great deal from the guests on her show.  It would be impossible to overstate the effect that this one woman has had on millions of people around the world in their efforts to achieve personal transformation.

In honor of her final network television show, here are some of my favorite quotes from Oprah Winfrey:

  • “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough”
  • “Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody’s going to know whether you did it or not.”
  • “When you undervalue what you do, the world will undervalue who you are”
  • “Do the one thing you think you cannot do. Fail at it. Try again. Do better the second time. The only people who never tumble are those who never mount the high wire.”
  • “Your calling isn’t something that somebody can tell you about. It’s what you feel. It is the thing that gives you juice. The thing that you are supposed to do. And nobody can tell you what that is. You know it inside yourself.”
  • “Forgiveness is giving up the hope that the past could have been any different, it’s excepting the past for what it was, and using this moment and this time to help yourself move forward”

Maria Shriver finds her way

Maria ShriverAs the world now knows, Arnold Schwarzenegger fathered a child with a long-time domestic worker in the Shriver-Schwarzenegger household. In my post the other day on the breakup between Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger I wrote:

Shriver’s progressed Midheaven is preparing to move into Aries – the beginning of a new 30-year cycle that will inspire a powerful motivation to find her own way in the world and develop a career in which she can play a leading role.  Last year’s Chiron/Neptune conjunction transited her ascendant between May of 2009 and November of 2010 – a cycle which likely caused her to re-examine who she is and how she wanted to express her life.

The planet Uranus is at work here as well, forming a trine to Uranus in her chart.  Because Uranus is the planet of personal innovation and authenticity, under this influence we strive to bring new experiences into our lives that will help us to feel truly free.

I suspect that after years of dealing with suspected infidelities and then discovering the huge secret that had been brewing under her nose for at least 11 years and possibly 15 (the age that the “love child” is said to be) there is a huge relief in coming out of that prison of lies.  And luckily for Maria Shriver, Oprah was there to help her to emerge unscathed on the stage of Oprah’s final star-studded show:

Half a day after her husband stunningly confessed to fathering an illegitimate child over a decade a ago with a female staffmember, Shriver took the stage at Chicago’s United Center alongside Gayle King(Winfrey’s other best girlfriend) around 10 p.m.

Radiant in a sexy teal gown, Shriver paid tribute to her close friend. “For more than 30 years you have bestowed upon me the most amazing friendship,” said Shriver, who has four kids with Schwarzenegger, 63.

She even made a slight dig at her cheating spouse, noting to Winfrey: “You have shown love, support, wisdom, and most of all,” she said, with a big, meaningful pause, “the truth.”

Winfrey tightly squeezed her hand as the crowd erupted in applause.

Schwarzenegger may now be investigated for fraud in the coverup that took place while he was Governator of California.  I’ll be posting more about his planetary influences in the next few days.

The astrology of the Shriver/Schwarzenegger split

Arnold Schwarzenegger Maria Shriver separateI suspect that more people were surprised when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver married than when they announced their split this week after 25 years of marriage.

When clients come for an astrological reading about their relationship, they generally want to hear that their relationship is compatible.  But astrologers know that compatibility does not always spell success in relationships.  Couples who are compatible with each other: who  think the same way, who feel the same things, who want the same lifestyle – these couples rarely marry or stay together.  We are more likely to gravitate towards partners who have qualities that we lack; partners who stretch us and help us to develop qualities that may be more difficult for us.

It will surprise no one to learn that Arnold Schwarzenegger was born with the Sun in Leo, but that Leo Sun which is larger than life is locked in a challenging square with Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing.  When the ego (Sun) has been wounded (Chiron), that Leo desire for attention and acclaim becomes bigger and more urgent.   It doesn’t help that a tight Saturn/Pluto conjunction in his chart (also in Leo) suggests a deeply entrenched fear and anxiety, and the proximity of this conjunction to his Sun shows that his confidence is likely rather superficial. The anxiety of Saturn and Pluto falls in Schwarzenegger’s second house of money and personal resources, and I suspect that he has never forgotten the insecurity of his impoverished childhood.

Such a challenge to the Sun requires hard work and discipline (Saturn) to overcome one’s fears and self-doubts, and Pluto’s presence there shows a nascent connection to one’s inner development of personal power that will be the key to transformation.  It’s no surprise that Schwarzenegger sought public office in order to achieve this power in an external manner, but it’s the inner power that is required here.

A distressed Leo often requires constant stroking of the ego (we saw this same dynamic with Bill Clinton), and it’s not unusual for this need to lead to infidelities.  Maria Shriver’s friends report that she complained for many years about Schwarzenegger’s “roving eye” and had been planning to leave him before both her parents died over the past few years.  But with the family-oriented sign of Cancer rising, and with his Venus in Cancer, Schwarzenegger likely feels a deep connection to his family and a desire to keep his family intact; however, like many marriages, that need and the need for fame and power cannot always be resolved.

Maria Shriver’s chart shows a Scorpio Sun in the sixth house of service and work; in fact, she has five planets in the sixth house revealing her deep commitment to helping others.  With Taurus rising she avoids change wherever possible and prefers stability and financial security to a more transitory life.  When Schwarzenegger was governor she rarely spent time in Sacramento with him but instead stayed in their home in Los Angeles.

Shriver’s Moon is in Leo, so there is a part of her that also needs the attention that Schwarzenegger seeks so easily.  Her Moon conjoins his Pluto which generally shows an intense and powerful connection, although the Pluto person (in this case Schwarzenegger) often overpowers the Moon person who can feel left behind.  His Saturn also conjoins her Moon which can feel confining but also protective.  This is an important significator for marriage and commitment.  The linkages between their charts is less powerful for him than for her which has likely made it easier for him to minimize the marriage if in fact that is what occurred.

The breakup is signified in Schwarzenegger’s chart by a challenging square of Uranus to his Moon.  The Moon represents emotional security, but also the women in our lives and this cycle reflects the abrupt change in his living situation.  It’s not uncommon for a man to be surprised when a woman leaves, even though she may have been dropping warning signals for years and the timing of this  Uranus cycle suggests that this may have been the case.

In any event I know we wish them all the best as they strive, like all of us, to find peace and happiness in a changing world.

Happy May Day, and a few more Royal Wedding thoughts

Today is the first of May, widely celebrated by neo-pagans as Beltane, the fire festival which honors Bel, the god of fire.  Because Beltane is a “cross-quarter” festival, meaning it occurs at the halfway point between the equinox and solstice, it will not actually occur until May 5th when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus. In any event, with so many planets still in Aries, including Mars and Jupiter which reach their peak conjunction today, a fire festival is an excellent way to channel some of the fiery energy that abounds right now.

astrology of the royal weddingI’d like to return briefly to the Royal Wedding discussion.  Many astrologers have pointed out the fact that the wedding chart shows the Moon void of course at 26 degrees Pisces, meaning that the Moon is unaspected and will not make aspects to any other planets until it reaches the next sign (Aries) which it did on Friday just after the wedding.  Electional charts (charts that are used to “elect” a particular date typically would never have a Moon void of course which suggests that an astrologer was probably not used in planning this wedding.  (Whether or not the void Moon has an impact in our daily lives is a matter of great debate and most astrologers agree that focusing on such minutiae is not always helpful in our daily lives.)

In any case, since the Moon in a wedding chart represents the heart of the marriage, that void Moon reinforces my sense that the emotional heart of this marriage will not take hold.

One of my readers commented that Dharmaruci has the best posts on the Royal Wedding and while normally I would be offended by a comment suggesting that another writer has posts better than mine in this case I am glad to agree.  DR is a great friend and a better astrologer, and he has two posts that will be of great interest to royal watchers.  In addition, the fact that he (like Kathryn) is British gives him extra credibility of course.

In yesterday’s post, DR points out that Prince William was born during an eclipse with the Sun and Moon conjoined in Cancer within 10 degrees of the North Node.  This eclipse and triple conjunction falls in the seventh house of marriage.  The North Node, representing our future direction, suggests that marriage moves him towards his destiny, but perhaps that his emotional needs (Moon) and solar identity (Sun) will be eclipsed by his fate.

Dharmaruci notes:

Uranus will be squaring William’s Moon (wife) at 5 Cancer through to the end of 2012. Uranus is the awakener. I think Kate will change now she has got what she has wanted for so many years, and I think William is going to be wondering who he has married. The next 2 years are going to be difficult and unsettled for him in his marriage. You do not want to get married with a hard Uranus-Moon transit coming up (or Uranus-Venus for that matter.)

It is interesting that Diana died in 1997 as Pluto was finishing a hard transit to William’s Venus-Uranus opposition, and now he gets married as Neptune is finishing a hard transit to his Venus-Uranus. It connects the two events. And his Venus is also closely conjunct Chiron, so there is a wound here. His Mum’s death and the trauma of it have affected his choice of partner. He is seeking healing. It is unconscious, and Kate looks like she fits the bill. Put another way, if one of your parents is absent or dysfunctional or just completely unlike you, you may not learn how to relate to members of that sex, who to trust and who not to trust, and you may have to learn the hard way. Also, with Moon in Aquarius in a t-square with Venus and Uranus, Diana was deeply unconventional and unsettled and wanting to break free. It’s like William has instinctively chosen the opposite of Diana, because it was that desire to be free that resulted in her death. And, in the strange way that fate seems to work, William’s marriage may well end up with him feeling trapped like his Mum did. But how else do we learn?

The question of fate and free will is an important one for astrologers. How much of our lives is fated, and where do we have real choice?  There is also the suggestion that our subconscious drives us to play out our fate even when we should, or in any case could, have real choice.  Children of alcoholics marry partners who don’t touch a drop but later begin drinking.  Rape victims marry partners who seem gentle at the time and later become abusers.  The subconscious force to play out the dynamics of the birthchart is extremely strong and requires an elevation of the consciousness and an application of the higher mind before we can really have true choice.

So eclipse or not, like all of us Prince Williams is playing the cards that he has been dealt and it will be interesting to see what transpires as a result.

The astrology of the Royal Wedding

Royal Wedding astrologyI confess I’m not that interested in the Royal Wedding that occurs today. I wasn’t that interested in Charles and Diana’s wedding either, even though that wedding had much more of the pomp and circumstance that we associate with royalty than the more modern wedding of William and Kate.

But then I read my friend Kathryn’s analysis and the whole situation became much more interesting.  Some of the interesting facts about the royal wedding according to Kathryn:

  • The wedding date occurs on the eve of the Beltane festival, also called the Festival of Unification.
  • The ascendant for the chart of the Coronation of William in 1066, the birth of England, is at 21.57 Aries. At the time of the wedding, Jupiter (“planet of Faith and Kings” ) will be at 21.56 Aries and will cross the ascendant of the 1066 chart just after the ceremony.
  • Mars (the defender) conjoins Jupiter (the Faith) at 21 degrees Aries on the wedding day.

Kathryn’s post predicts that because of the Mars/Jupiter conjunction you will see “lots of people wearing red or shades of it” (red is the color of Mars).  Sure enough, William will wear his red army uniform to the wedding.

With Jupiter sitting right on the Midheaven of his chart, Prince William was born to the throne, but Neptune on his ascendant makes it more difficult for him to know who he really is.  (Chart of Prince Williams here.)This makes him more malleable and easy to manipulate, which in some ways may be a desirable attribute for a royal character who is really a figurehead for the country.  He’s extremely sensitive, with the Sun conjunct Moon in emotional Cancer, and was very connected to his mother, the Princess Diana.

The exact conjunction of Venus to Chiron in his chart suggests that relationships are painful for him, and it’s well known that Kate Middleton was not his first choice of a bride.  His heart was broken several times before he came to this decision, and the fact that the decision to marry came during his Saturn Return is, in my mind, problematic.

The Saturn Return occurs around age 28-30 when Saturn returns to its place in the birthchart.  These can be challenging times when we are forced to make choices to grow up rather than continue to pursue childish things.  There is a tendency for Saturn Return marriages to fail because so often the decision is made solely for the reason of taking that step into adulthood, rather than for the emotional connection that sustains a marriage.

Prince Williams Mars conjoins his Saturn and is being affected by his Saturn return as well.  Mars represents our drive and our desires, and when Saturn is present there can be some inhibition of our ability to seek our own path.  The fact that both Mars and Saturn are in Libra indicates a need to please others and to put one’s own needs aside for the sake of harmony.

Kate Middleton (see Astrotheme chart here with an unverified birth time) has the Sun in Capricorn which is perfect for taking on the responsibilities of the royal family, but it lies opposite her sensitive Cancer Moon.  This is the Full Moon aspect that suggests difficulty balancing one’s emotions.   Both ends of this opposition are squared by Saturn, and so Kate is undergoing a long-term transit of Saturn which encompasses her Sun, Moon and also her natal Saturn.  There is a great deal of glamour in a royal wedding, but also a great deal of responsibilities to come.

The new planet Eris sits right on the ascendant of this chart, and we don’t know enough about how Eris works to be able to make predictions based on this.  But because Eris is the planet of discord and change, it appears likely that Kate will be shaking up the establishment in some way.

With both having Moon in Cancer, Kate and William share a deep emotional connection that will hopefully be able to overcome the fact that there are not many points of contact between their charts.  Those points of contact create emotional connections between two people that we don’t see here, and the composite chart (the chart of the couple) shows Aquarius is rising and Uranus, ruler of Aquarius, sits right on the Midheaven of the composite chart.  Uranus and Aquarius are about social change and the good of the collective, but rather impersonal.

With a Cancer Moon in the fifth house of the composite chart, children are likely, but an exact square between the Sun and Moon suggests a lack of emotional connection that will eventually drive the two apart.  Mars also squares the Moon exactly, suggesting anger and resentment, and opposes the Sun which would encourage long periods of separation and conflict.

All in all this is not the astrology of an ideal marriage, but royal marriages are rarely for the purpose of emotional harmony and personal growth.  It will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

Nicolas Cage and the Libra Full Moon

Nicolas Cage was arrested today for assaulting his wife during an argument over which house was their New Orleans rental house.

Mr. Cage is no stranger to tabloid news, having recently lost homes both in New Orleans and Bel Air to foreclosure, was directly affected by the Libra Full Moon which peaks tomorrow and which exactly aspects an aspect between the Libra Moon and Mars in his chart.  That Moon/Mars aspect in his natal chart can be very difficult since the aggressive urge of Mars is constantly irritating the tenderness of the Libra Moon which creates dissonance.  The Full Moon tends to shine a light on our internal emotional world which is why so many people find a heightened intensity in all areas of life at the time of the Full Moon.

The Meltdown of Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen astrologyI didn’t want to write about Charlie Sheen in the middle of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan when Uranus entered Aries, or when Neptune entered Pisces, equally big news from an astrological perspective, or when Pluto turned retrograde this weekend. But now that things are settling down a little astrologically I think it’s time for a little comic relief in the form of a look at the astrology of Charlie Sheen.

In 2009, when Sheen was arrested for threatening his then-wife with a knife, I wrote this profile:

Charlie Sheen is one of those “radical Virgos” whose dramatic behavior belie the typical characteristics of the Virgo Sun sign whose natives tend to be rather reticent and modest.  You would never think of a Virgo as having a penchant for porn and gambling.

Sheen is one of the “Uranus/Pluto” generation who were born between 1962 and 1968 when Uranus (radical change) and Pluto (death and rebirth) were conjunct in the sky.  This entire generation has a thirst for breaking down barriers (Uranus) in order to rebuild something that has become stale and dysfunctional (Pluto), and for Sheen this hunger is even more intense because his Sun is a part of that conjunction.  In addition, Chiron (emotional wounding and sensitivity) is conjunct oppressive Saturn in his chart, signifying a deep well of emotional pain within him that never quite disappears.  This is a powerful combination of planets that require a fair amount of self-understanding to master, and sometimes that process takes a lifetime.

Sheen’s Moon is part of this configuration, and it falls in the expansive and happy-go-lucky sign of Sagittarius.  This complicates matters for Sheen, since it makes it more difficult to do the solid emotional work that a conjunction of Saturn to Chiron demands.  The Sagittarius Moon often prefers to take the easy way out and flee the scene rather than dig into the dirt of the emotional stress that follows him everywhere.

Sheen’s sexuality is evident in the chart with Mars, planet of aggression and desire, in the sign of Scorpio which is an intensely sexual sign.  The sexuality of Scorpio is intense and dramatic and not at all polite.  Mars is the ancient ruler of Scorpio and represents the pure desire found in that sign, but Scorpio’s modern ruler is Pluto, awakening the individual to the call of the Soul that lies within the purely physical desire.  Individuals with Mars in Scorpio are really seeking the Soul through the act of sex, although that isn’t always evident to them. This need to go deeper through sexuality is also seen in the fact that Sheen’s Sagittarius Moon falls in the Eighth House of Scorpio.

This duality is complicated even further by Gemini on the ascendant.  Gemini is famous for experimentation and flirtation, and even though a part of Sheen’s psyche craves the intense dramatic sexuality that a porn star can probably deliver, another part of him desires the freedom to be able to pass through many different experiences (Gemini ascendant) while keeping his heart free (Sagittarian Moon).  At the same time his Virgo Sun craves order and respectability, yet it conjoins Uranus and Pluto which instills an intensely rebellious nature.

Sheen is a complex array of personalities locked up in one human being.  As an actor, he is able to identify with each of the different parts of himself through the roles that he plays, but at a certain point he has to figure out who he himself really is.

——————————————————————-

Over the past year and some months since I wrote this, the fragmentation of Charlie Sheen’s personality has become that much more evident and has coincided with the movement of Sheen’s progressed Mars into an exact square to his natal Sun.  The progressed chart shows our ongoing evolution as the chart is progressed through time.  Mars often acts as a trigger for important events because it’s fiery nature tends to activate an evolving dynamic that might otherwise take a longer time to unfold.  We can look at this as if Charlie’s current drive for power and desire (Mars) is in conflict with the core of his identity (Sun).

Remember the Sun is part of a complex system that includes Uranus and Pluto, so as his progressed Mars gets closer to aspecting his natal Sun it is also beginning to affect Uranus and Pluto, the planets of radical and sudden transformation, with the force of a rocket ship.    The tour that Sheen has embarked on is aptly named as “My violent torpedo of truth.”

Psychologists hypothesize that the apparent insanity that Sheen is currently exhibiting is a form of “hypomania,” a more moderate form of the kind of mania exhibited by bipolar individuals.  Sheen has not behaved in this manner before, but the astrological analysis suggests that a part of himself that has remained hidden is exploding into consciousness with the trigger of the movement of progressed Mars.

Meanwhile, transiting Chiron and Neptune have been in 90 degree aspect, or square, to Sheen’s ascendant – his persona, the way he presents himself to the world.  Here again we see the perfect exhibit for this in the form of his world tour, in which his fan base has paid for the opportunity to watch him self-destruct, and event that occurred as transiting Saturn formed a square to his progressed ascendant.  Fans who paid to see the show report that Sheen seems genuinely shocked at the boos and hisses that are delivered from the audience – in the Neptunian fog it is difficult for him to see clearly who he is, but the influence of Chiron requires that he come face to face with the demons so that they can be healed.

This progressed Mars will remain a trigger for the next five years, which will hopefully motivate him into action to start to take care of the details of his life.  The average person would not have the luxury of self-indulgence that Sheen has been allowed and would likely have been forced to make repairs to his life by now.  Perhaps the mirror of Sheen’s fans saying things like “Sheen’s show was worse than Chernobyl” will force him to wake up and begin to repair his broken life.

RIP Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor died yesterday after a long battle with congestive heart failure and a lifetime of health problems.  Although she had a long and successful film career her romantic life was plagued by scandal and divorce.  She was the best of friends to Michael Jackson and many in the gay community, and an earlier fighter in the battle against HIV.  She was a woman who was bigger than life in nearly every way.

Astrologically, Ms. Taylor (chart here)  had the Sun in Pisces and opposed by Neptune, a Neptunian “double whammy” since Pisces is ruled by Neptune, resulting in a dual connection between the Sun (the Self) and the Pisces/Neptune principle of transcendence and creativity.  It’s no wonder Ms. Taylor loved artists and musicians, and no wonder that she was blessed with so much creativity herself.

Ms. Taylor’s Sun was flanked in a triple conjunction by Mars and Mercury, and while Mars conjunct the Sun can often bestow a strong energy force, in Pisces that energy is dissipated. Mars is also opposed by Neptune, which doubles this dissipation of the life force and normally requires a great deal of physical activity to keep the Mars energy flowing and to strengthen the will that Mars is so much a part of.   The Sun/Mercury conjunction gave her a brilliant intelligence that was such a gift in her acting skills, and the location of all three planets in the third house of communication and Neptune in the ninth house of the media and entertainment industry perfectly reflects her long career.

Neptune is associated with glamour and shapeshifting, and is often found in the charts of successful actors as a result since that shapeshifting ability makes it easy to slip in and out of roles.  There is also a powerful romantic force when Neptune aspects the Sun, although it can be associated with delusion and illusion as well.  Neptune opposite Mars, especially in Pisces, often shows someone who surrenders reality for the sake of an illusion or romantic hope.

Ms. Taylor’s romantic life was complicated, and we see that she had a conjunction of Venus to Uranus – both elements that are symbolic of an intense need for freedom and individualism in one’s life and in one’s relationships.  With Venus in the fourth house of family and home, she would have craved a happy home life, but Uranus in a nearly exact conjunction to Venus demands space and separation and often brings about those separations in sudden and dramatic ways.

Complicating her emotional life was the fact that her Moon was in passionate and dramatic Scorpio, and it was opposed by Chiron, the planet of healing and wounding.  The Moon represents our inner child, and an opposition of Chiron to the Moon suggests painful experiences in childhood that instill wounds that take a lifetime or more to heal.  Ms. Taylor’s mother put her to work as an actor at the age of 3 and once she was in the Hollywood system of the time, at the age of 9, she lost her childhood and much of her life.

Jupiter was in Leo in her chart, a placement that tends towards recklessness but also a big and generous heart.  Jupiter square Chiron is often associated with accidents, and the Moon connection suggests that her many accidents were a subconscious route to the expression of her emotional wounds. Ms. Taylor’s health problems began at age 12 when she fell off a horse, and continued throughout her life.

At the time of her death the transiting North Node (describing the evolution of our personal destiny) formed an exact square to Ms. Taylor’s natal nodes, and transiting Mars activated the North Node in her progressed chart.  These nodal transits generally coincide with major shifts in our life path, and suggest that her work here on earth was finished, and that it was time for her to move on to her next assignment.

Elizabeth Taylor brought beauty and grace to everyone who knew her, and all of us who saw her on the screen as well.  Her passion and kindness is her lasting legacy and she will never be forgotten.

Nate Dogg: The effect of Chiron and Uranus on health

Nate Dogg diedDisclaimer: I am not a medical professional, nor do I have training in the medical fields.  However, I have a strong interest in the way energy works in the body as described by astrological symbolism.

I had never heard of Nate Dogg, who recently died at the age of 41 after suffering from a series of strokes, until I heard about his passing on the news.  It was his age, 41, which grabbed my attention since that is the age at which transiting Uranus opposes natal Uranus in everyone’s life.  This is the classic “midlife crisis” transit in which we are forced to reassess everything in our life and when we tend to make big and sudden changes.

Uranus, being the ruler of electricity, also has an effect on the way our bodies manage the electrical charges of the nervous system.  Many people going through the “Uranus Opposition” as we call it experience a flood of kundalini energy, known as the “kundalini opening,” which can put stress on the nervous system and result in a high degree of anxiety.

Nate Dogg (born as Nathaniel Hale on August 19, 1969, time unknown) was born with the Sun in Leo and locked in a tight square to Neptune.  This is the same Sun/Neptune square that we see in President Obama’s chart, and while it affords a high degree of creativity it also suggests someone who has  difficulty (Neptune)  establishing an identity (Sun) for themselves.

Mr. Dogg also had Saturn, planet of testing and challenge, tightly opposed to his Scorpio Moon which reveals a deep sense of isolation and a propensity towards depression.  That strong Saturn placement also denotes someone who works hard and can be very disciplined at the core.  While the Sun represents the physical heart in medical astrology, the Moon represents the emotional heart and often people with a stressed Moon develop heart problems as a result.

Mars is in his chart was in cheerful Sagittarius – a placement which typically shows a high degree of motivation (Mars) to reach beyond the boundaries of that which appears possible  (Sagittarius).  People with Mars in Sagittarius have a strong drive to be cheerful and to maintain an optimistic viewpoint, regardless of the circumstances, and this influence provided him with a nice counterpoint to the challenge of the Saturn/Moon opposition.

The New York Times wrote that “his blend of cocksureness [Leo Sun] and haunted melancholy [Scorpio Moon opposite Saturn] became a [hip hop] genre staple.”

Mr. Dogg was plagued with personal and health issues.  He first suffered a stroke in December of 2007 or January 2008 (news reports vary) at the age of 38 which paralyzed the left side of body (corresponding to the right brain, the creative self).   After he had almost completely recovered, he was charged in June 2008 for stalking and threatening his estranged wife, and then he suffered a second stroke in September 2008.

Chiron opposes Uranus in his chart, a dynamic that was quite common between the early 1950s and the mid 1980s, but no other age group has it.  This opposition pits the planet of wounding and healing (Chiron) against the electrical planet of radical behavior and sudden change (Uranus) and often instills a high degree of energetic sensitivity.  With the Chiron/Uranus opposition there is often an overabundance of electromagnetic energy that needs to be balanced in some ways.  Many times people with this opposition become drawn to energy healing modalities such as Reiki, both for themselves and as a tool for helping to heal others.

In Mr. Dogg’s chart Jupiter conjoined Uranus and also opposed Chiron, expanding and exacerbating the challenge of the opposition.  The combination of Jupiter with Uranus can inflame the radical tendencies of both planets, and then the job of Chiron (which was also retrograde in his chart and therefore operated more intensely) to facilitate the healing of the psycho-emotional wounds of the soul becomes more difficult.  Jupiter’s placement there, in the chart of someone who may not have been particularly introspective or spiritually-oriented, encourages more of an acting-out of inner urges rather than finding the internal balance that is necessary for growth to occur.

Mr. Dogg’s progressed Sun conjoined Uranus at the time of his stroke in 2007, and over the next four years progressed to interact with the entire Uranus/Jupiter/Chiron system in his chart.  Progressions of the Sun to the natal chart tend to illuminate the issues of the chart to bring them to the forefront of consciousness.   His progressed Sun was exactly square to his progressed Mars (aggression) at the time, and transiting Jupiter had just entered Capricorn and lit the flame for the whole dynamic to erupt.  The presence of progressed Mars in the mix suggests that there was a tinderbox of unexpressed rage and pain just waiting to be released, and if you google Mr. Dogg’s lyrics this will not surprise you.

Mr. Dogg made a nearly complete recovery, so presumably once the energy of the stroke dissipated his health returned.  With the progressed Sun continuing to light up the recklessness of the natal Jupiter/Uranus conjunction, he chased his ex-wife down the highway and threatened to kill her.  At the time, transiting Uranus (radical behavior) was sitting right on his natal Pluto, a transit that often causes us to feel that matters are of a life or death nature, and transiting Mars was sitting right on his Sun, bringing up the rage that he was not so easily able to express.

By September 2008, when Mr. Dogg had his second stroke, his progressed Sun had caught up to his progressed Uranus in an exact conjunction, lighting up the tinder box once again and creating a short circuit of electrical impulses in his body to cause a stroke.  Progressed Sun and Uranus were also exactly opposite progressed Chiron, and this stroke was more intense than the first one.  Mr. Dogg reportedly ended up in a coma with both a breathing and feeding tube.

Over the next few years, the planets of the Cardinal Drama that we have been discussing here on this blog interacted with this challenging system in Mr. Dogg’s chart.  His death on March 15th was blamed on complications from the strokes, but the astrological implications are clear.  At the time of his death, Mr. Dogg’s progressed Sun had just moved past an exact opposition to Chiron in the natal chart, and transiting Pluto was in a nearly exact square to both Chiron and the progressed Sun.  Pluto transits take us deep into the soul, and often bring experiences that take us into the realm of the Underworld.

All of this does not mean that Mr. Dogg was fated to die of a series of strokes.  I suspect that he was locked in an inner world of rage and depression that ate him up from within and from which he was unable or unwilling to extricate himself.  We can see this in his lyrics, which describe in detail the story we have used astrological symbolism to tell.

How can I concentrate
With all the problems that I face
I often ask myself if there’s a place
where I can get away (Where I can get away)
I keep my head to the sky
And try to maintain my pace
If I don’t then I’m gone
Somebody gone take my place
No need to go too fast
Cos I know a little time it takes
But my situation’s bad
I’ll be jackin soon at this rate
I ain’t tryin to make you mad
It’s a plain and simple fact you face
If you’re broke you hurt most
From all the bullshit you take

[Chorus (x2)]

[Nate Dogg]
Lately I’ve been feelin like givin up (Don’t give up)
The pain inside makes me wanna reach out and touch
Someone, anyone who feels that I ain’t been hurt enough
You best duck or get stuck
Cos man I been hurtin for months

No more, no more, no more, no more
I’ve been hurtin a while
No more, no more, no more, no more
And I don’t wanna hurt no more
No more, no more, no more, no more
Don’t wanna hurt no more
But the rain keeps comin down

Blogging in the time of Pluto in Capricorn

celebrity journalismWhen I started this blog in 2005, celebrity journalism was all the rage.  A good part of my posts were spent analyzing whether or not the latest celebrity relationships would last, or why the bimbo of the month had her latest meltdown.  Celebrity gossip as a media force has been around for a long time, but that force reached a point of hysteria when Pluto was in Sagittarius, which among other things rules entertainment and celebrity.

Pluto takes a long time to go through a sign, anywhere from twelve to twenty years, and while Pluto is going through a sign we tend to see the matters that are ruled by that sign become intensified and glorified, but we also see the dark underside of these areas of life emerge.  Sagittarius is the sign of expansion and optimism, and when Pluto moved through Sag between 1995 and 2008 we witnessed the darker side of perpetual optimism which led to unsustainable economic expansion and a relentless refusal to acknowledge the limits (Capricorn) of this kind of growth.  This of course is what led to the economic downturn in which we now find ourselves.

Under the glittering celebration of Pluto in Sagittarius, so many people, feeling the pressure of this expansiveness, longed to live like the celebrities whose every move was followed and studied.  This obsession with celebrity journalism was called a “virus” by the mainstream press who feared celebrity news would crowd out legitimate news.

Of course the destruction and transformation (Pluto) of journalism and news (Sagittarius) was something to be expected when Pluto went through Sagittarius, but now that Pluto is in Capricorn celebrities just don’t seem as interesting.  After all, how much can we really read about Lindsay Lohan before we experience celebrity fatigue?  And when so many people are having trouble putting food on the table, the luxury of reading about spoiled rich people does tend to lose its glamor.

Consequently, over the past three years my interest in celebrity astrology has waned, and my focus now is much more on developing tools that we can use to help us to harness the power of Pluto in Capricorn to dig ourselves out of disaster and create new structures that serve us.

I’m curious to know what my readers think – what blog topics interest you these days?  What are your thoughts about celebrity interest?
