The astrology of Oscar Pistorius

Oscar Pistorius astrology

The Bionic Man

Oscar Pistorius is in jail right now awaiting trial for the Valentine’s Day shooting of his girlfriend, Veena Steenkampf.  Previously he rose to fame as the first double amputee to win a medal in an able bodied world track event.

Pistorius is a Bionic Man as befits a transhuman athlete in the Aquarian Age – fitted with artificial limbs that some argue give him an unfair advantage over mere mortals.  (See my posts on Transhumanism here.)

Pistorius was profiled in the New York Times last year in a piece that described him as “more than a little crazy” – a risk taker who was fearful of intruders and an excellent shot at the firing range.  This fear is captured in a tweet from November: “Nothing like getting home to hear the washing machine on and think it’s an intruder.”

The astrological chart of Pistorius offers interesting clues into his character.  The French website Astrotheme offers a birthtime of 10:30 am on November 22, 1986 (source: email from family member) which indicates Aquarius rising.  Aquarius is the sign of detachment and reason, technology and innovation.  We can’t be 100% sure of this birthtime, of course, but an Aquarius ascendant is  the perfect mask for a Transhuman-type athlete; someone who seeks to shatter the paradigms of what is possible for human beings to accomplish.

His Sun is at the very last degree of Scorpio, often called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree.  In medieval astrology the “anareta” was a planet of destruction.  While modern astrology doesn’t take these significators literally, the 29th degree indicates a completion of some kind of karma and needs to be taken seriously.  The Sun is on the Scorpio/Sagittarius cusp where the Sagittarian longing for freedom begins to interweave with the Scorpionic pressure to remain fixed and complete an uncompleteable task.  There is tension there, and this tension is exacerbated by a challenging square to Mars in Aquarius.  The Sun/Mars square evokes tremendous aggressive energy that requires an outlet, something he has presumably found through athletics.

Pluto, the planet of death and regeneration, sits atop the chart at the Midheaven if this birth time is correct.  Scorpio is on the Midheaven – the sign of power that is ruled by Pluto – beaming out a signal that this individual has an intensely focused and dramatic destiny that could involve a series of endings/deaths and regeneration.  Four planets are in Scorpio, and five if we include Ceres, along with the Midheaven.  This is a very intense lineup of Plutonic energy which confers with it a darkness that must be confronted and challenged.

The Moon is in Leo, signifying Pistorius’s need for attention and acclaim.  However, that Moon (also representing the mother) is squared by Pluto, a challenging aspect that suggests intense emotions and challenges in the maternal relationship (his mother died when he was thirteen).  A tattoo on his arm commemorates for all eternity the dates of his mother’s birth and death, very fitting for a Moon/Pluto aspect although it would tend to make the release required by Pluto very difficult if not impossible.  Under Pluto’s tutelage we hold on fiercely to the things that frighten and haunt us in an effort to retain some sort of control, but Pluto’s lesson is the letting go and learning the art of trust in a higher purpose.

Pistorius’s romantic life is further complicated by the fact that Venus (in Scorpio) conjoins Pluto and joins in to the Pluto/Moon square.  I have something like this in my own chart and I can attest to the terrors of abandonment (Pluto/Moon) and fears of rejection (Pluto/Venus) that this dynamic evokes.  Again, we see the theme of struggle to control one’s fears and the necessity of letting go and releasing those fears in trust.

With transiting Saturn moving across all of his Scorpio planets, life for Oscar would not have been very pleasant over the past few months.  Between Thanksgiving and New Year Saturn made the first pass over his Venus/Pluto conjunction and then crossed the Midheaven.  Saturn is after all the Celestial Taskmaster, and he requires that we do the work our soul needs in order to progress.  When Saturn transits Pluto, the planet of fear and obsession, the fears and anxieties that we normally may be able to overcome erupt into consciousness where hopefully we will address and deal with them.  However, that Sun/Mars square has a tendency towards reckless and impulsive action that can become problematic.

Pistorius tells  a story of fear and anxiety over intruders, and describes the vulnerability of being in bed without his prosthetic legs, unable to flee or protect himself.  That story bears up under the burden of Pluto in his chart.  There are no particular planetary events that would have motivated an act of domestic violence such as the intentional shooting of Ms. Steenkamp.

As a curious aside, Reeva Steenkamp’s Mars sat exactly on Pistorius’s Sun.  That is a placement in chart comparison that can bring about an exciting sexual attraction, but it generally signifies a great deal of conflict between the individuals.  Or perhaps in this case it simply denotes an act of violence, whether intentional or not.

Dawn Bodrogi taught me to look for Pallas in progressions for important events.  I found that at the time of my mother’s death Pallas had returned to its place in my own chart.  Dawn’s research finds Pallas, the asteroid of creative intelligence, in sigificant alignmnents when significant events occur.  In the case of Pistorius, Pallas by progression is within minutes of an exact alignment to his natal Pluto/Midheaven placement.

In any case, this tragic story has many interesting psychological dimensions that will be interesting to observe as the trial unfolds.

The astrology of the Newtown shooter

On December 14th  a 20 year old man went on a killing spree, murdering his mother and perhaps as many as 28 others, including 20 children at the elementary school where his mother taught.  Adam Lanza, the shooter, was described as intelligent but socially awkward, a kid who didn’t fit in.

John Townley has posted the charts of Adam Lanza along with a brief analysis of the event.  One thing I noticed right away about Lanza’s chart was the exact conjunction of Uranus and Neptune.  The Uranus/Neptune conjunction in the early 1990s was a hugely significant planetary event that opened up portals of consciousness and inspired radical (Uranus) spirituality (Neptune) that often veered into delusion (also Neptune).  The New Age movement, for example, exploded during this period.  Uranus and Neptune were both in Capricorn, the sign of structures and solid foundations – under the Uranus/Neptune conjunction we saw the radical transformation (Uranus) and dissolving (Neptune) of personal structures that underpin our lives such as marriages, relationships, businesses.

In terrible crimes such as these I often attempt to find answers in the birthchart of the person perpetrating the crime, NOT to offer excuses but in an attempt to see what kind of emotional challenge was left unresolved to result in such a heinous event.

The children that were born during this period (1991-1994) often are exceptionally gifted and talented (such as Justin Bieber who was born in 1994).   It is during this period that the whole concept of “Indigo Children”  entered the mainstream.  But this period also began the astonishing rise of autism spectrum disorders which I have often attributed to Uranian influences.  But autism does not create murderers, and to classify this young man as being simply on the autism spectrum ignores the greater truths as shown in the birthchart.

Lanza’s chart shows an Aries Venus in an exact square to both Uranus and Neptune.  Venus represents our ability to attach to others and how we feel about our own potential to be loved and desired.  Certainly there are plenty of people with this placement in their charts who are NOT social misfits, but it’s not uncommon to find Venus/Uranus people who are unable to form attachments, and Venus/Neptune people who feel lost in social situations.

The natal chart shows the Taurus Sun squared by Chiron, an often painful condition in which one’s sense of self (Sun) is threatened by emotional sensitivity and a quality of woundedness that often isn’t resolved until one’s later years.  Difficult aspects to the Sun often suggest abandonment by the father, and I suspect that when Lanza’s father left the family it was extremely painful for him.

Transiting Pluto has been within a degree of his natal Capricorn Moon for the past several months, with Uranus challenging his Moon by square aspect.  This Uranus/Pluto combination on a sensitive point like the Moon must have created a powerful pressure for resolution that had no apparent outlet for him.  If he was unable to connect with others, or to find some way to find comfort, this would have been an extremely painful five months of planetary hell.  And with Mars in Pisces, where anger and rage is often sublimated and submerged, he would have likely felt powerless and out of options.

At the time of these murders the New Moon in Sagittarius was sitting right on the Vertex in the chart.  The Vertex is a point that represents events over which we have no control; turning points in our life.  Lanza must have felt that in this act he was having a powerful meeting with his destiny and his fate.

Obviously, there are thousands of people with this same birthchart who are not committing mass murders.  Every one of us has a choice, and many of us have experiences of misery in this life that require us to adapt and grow and learn and heal.  I say this from personal experience, as many of you know.  I tend to see these situations as emblematic of the breakdown of the fabric of our society, in which loneliness and desperation create isolated and lonely individuals who feel so disconnected from the rest of the world that murder is a release without remorse, empathy and compassion.

This unspeakable event occurred just as Uranus stationed direct.  It was an event of shock and awe to such an extreme, but this is how Uranus works.  It shocks us out of our complacency and forces us to open our eyes.  Our culture is crumbling and our world is in desperate need of new values and a greater sense of community and mutual support.

It’s easy to blame events like this on the availability of guns, but gun control is only a small piece of the problem.  The desperation of our young people is the canary in the coal mine.  When will we begin paying attention?

More on the chart of James Eagan Holmes, the Aurora gunman

Photo from ABC News site

Last week I posted a profile of James Holmes, the gunman in the Aurora Colorado movie theater shooting. However, a birth certificate has been located and we now have a time for  Holmes that provides a more accurate chart.  The chart is posted on Astro.com but for some reason they do not use Chiron in these charts and Chiron plays an extremely significant role in the chart as it forms a Grand Cross (see my other article for more details).

With an exact birth time we can see the exact placement of the natal Moon, which is at the very last degree of Virgo.  The 29th degree, sometimes called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree, is associated with the endings of cycles and new beginnings.  The word “anaretic” derives from “anareta,” which in medieval astrology signified the planet of death in the natal horoscope.  This is likely what has given the 29th degree such a bad rap in traditional astrology, although endings are often  the harbinger of new beginnings and not to be feared.  However, there can be a sense of something critical to occur in an individual’s life, and this is made more true by the conjunction of the Moon to the South Node in the chart, representing karma from the past.

Leo is rising in the chart, so Holmes is a person who needs attention and admiration – he needs to be Somebody.  With a Leo ascendant there is a tremendous amount of fire in this chart including four planets in Sagittarius.  Yet the Moon (emotions and inner world) at the last degree of Virgo (critical perfectionism) is locked in this painful Grand Cross between Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing, and Saturn/Uranus (restriction and rebellion, tied together and operating simultaneously).

Knowing the birth time gives us an accurate sense of the progressed chart and that helps us to understand more about what is happening in the cycle of his psychological evolution.  His progressed Moon has been moving through a harmonious trine to the Sun (Self), Saturn (planning and organization) and Uranus (breaking free of restriction).  For someone with an impulse to violence, this sort of harmonious aspect can unlock inhibitions and bestow confidence especially when transiting Jupiter aspects the progressed angles (ascendant and midheaven) of the chart such as was happening for Mr. Holmes last week.  Jupiter’s beneficence can bring out the best in us – but it can also give the disturbed the confidence required to carry out terrible deeds.

The chart did not compel Mr. Holmes to engage in this horrific act.  Many people with the same chart would have made other choices to heal and transform their lives to work through their inner pain and challenges.  Each and every one of us make these choices every day, and every choice that we make can completely change the outcome.

The astrology of the Aurora shooting

Aurora shooting astrology I have been out of town at a music camp this week, blissfully unaware of the news until someone told me tonight about the horrific shooting in a movie theater in Aurora Colorado in which apparently 15 people watching the Batman film have been killed and over 50 others injured by a 24 year old neuroscientist in a Joker costume.  You can read about the details in various news sources; my interest is in the astrology of the shooter and the timing of the event during an astrological period that as I said before is one of the most intense weeks of the summer.

A suspect has been named in the shooting, James Eagen Holmes, and Wikipedia kindly provided a birthdate of December 13, 1987.  One would not usually conflate the Sun in Sagittarius, generally an easygoing and optimistic sign, with such an egregious act but Holmes’s chart is filled with challenge.

That Sagittarius Sun is conjunct both Saturn and Uranus which bestows a conflicting set of values.  Saturn conjunct the Sun demands perfection and a high level of achievement, order and structure, yet Uranus on the Sun inspires revolutionary behavior and a desire to react from the status quo.  That triple conjunction (Sun/Saturn/Uranus) is opposed by Chiron, demonstrating a wounded soul (Chiron/Sun) with the life challenge of deep soul surgery to resolve these wounds (Chiron/Saturn) and a highly sensitive energetic system with the potential to create anxiety and a great deal of inner pressure (Chiron/Uranus).

In addition, the Moon is in Virgo which suggests an inner critic and a high need for security.  In the chart the Moon acts as a fulcrum point between the two ends of the opposition, and forms a square to Chiron (painful emotional experiences) and to the Sun/Saturn/Uranus opposition (isolation and loneliness).

To make things even more complicated, Mars is in the intensely emotional sign of Scorpio, and it conjoins Pluto there.  Mars is aggression and desire, and in a conjunction to Pluto there is nearly always some sort of violence, emotional or physical, in childhood.  This is a placement that signifies great personal power, but it can be badly misused as well.

This is a very difficult chart to navigate with any degree of success, and it takes a great deal of self-awareness and personal inquiry.  Obviously many people have this same chart and don’t go out and commit mass murder.  But we CAN see in this chart the potential for violence if the deep emotional wounds are not resolved in some kind of positive way.

Releasing this kind of violent film in this kind of astrological intensity may not have been the smartest idea.  For a young man such as this one, with underlying issues of rage and abuse, it might have been just the thing to trigger an eruption of the inner wound into the world in which we all live.

The arrest of George Zimmerman and the healing of wounds in the US Sibly chart

Trayvon martin astrologyThe shooting of Trayvon Martin has made national headlines in the United States and in a country that likes to think of itself as being “beyond race” this story has brought the matter of racial bias and injustice to the front page of American news.

George Zimmerman was arrested yesterday just as Mars, planet of aggressive force, changed direction to turn direct.  Because this case has had so much impact on the American discussion I wanted to see if there were any significant connections between the charts of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin and the generally accepted chart for the US, the Sagittarius rising “Sibly” chart.

In order to assess the effect these individuals are having on the evolution of the United States I examined the progressed charts for all of the players using the information available  without accurate birth times.  Trayvon Martin’s progressed Saturn was exactly quincunx the progressed Moon in the US chart, demonstrating the challenge (Saturn)  to the emotions (Moon) of Americans in a struggle that, like the quincunx aspect, has no real way of achieving resolution. Both progressed Mars and Jupiter in Trayvon’s chart are trine Progressed Chiron in the US chart, motivating the desire (Mars) to raise up painful old wounds (Chiron) so that they can be healed and some meaning (Jupiter) found from the situation.  And Trayvon’s progressed Neptune, illusion and mystery, conjoins the US progressed South Node (karmic matters), with his progressed Uranus (shocking events) sitting right on the US Pluto (revelation of secrets and the principle of destruction).

George Zimmerman’s progressed chart also has interesting and potentially significant relationships to the US chart.  In the US progressed chart itself, progressed Sun is in an exact square to progressed Uranus which suggests an event that comes out of the blue to change the country forever.  Zimmerman’s progressed Uranus is exactly opposite the US progressed Uranus and squares the US progressed Sun, suggesting that he is the instrument of this sudden event.  His progressed Pluto is exactly square to the US progressed Pluto, which again ties into the intensity of his connection to a major transformation in the culture of the United States.  And while we don’t know his Moon placement without an accurate birth time, the progressed Moon using a noon time is exactly conjunct US progressed Mars and opposite US progressed Chiron.  It is the workings of his emotional world (his progressed Moon) that is stimulating the necessity of the US to force the healing of old and unspoken wounds as represented by Chiron.

Mars and Chiron in the progressed chart of the United States have been in a dance for a long time.  The two first opposed each other in 1985, with that dance beginning several years earlier as Ronald Reagan took office and arguably began dividing the country into conservative and liberal.  Without getting into a whole political discussion, it is widely accepted that the economic policies of those times have created the greatest wealth gap of any country in the world today.

The US progressed Mars turned retrograde in 2006-2007 which in my view was a turning point for the US and its military (Mars) dominance in the world.  Now that P Mars is approaching the second opposition to the US progressed Chiron (culminating in 2019) the fruits of these economic policies will make themselves known and a battle (Mars) may be necessary in order to heal the wounds (Chiron).

The shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman brings some of these matters into the public eye so that they can be dissected and examined, and hopefully some resolution and healing can occur.  George Zimmerman’s progressed lunar nodes are in exact harmony with the US progressed Mars/Chiron, which suggests that he has an important role to play in this national discussion and on some level is just an echo of a larger dynamic in the healing of the greater wound.

Mercury and Mars and the Trayvon Martin case

revised with correct birthdate for Trayvon Martin. Being in the middle of my own personal maelstrom I didn’t even hear about the Trayvon Martin case until late last week.  Trayvon Martin was a 17-year old young man who was shot by George Zimmerman, an armed community watch volunteer, in Sanford Florida on February 26th.

Zimmerman claimed self-defense and was not arrested by police, and there was no investigation until the FBI stepped in on March 20th, shortly after Mercury turned retrograde on the 13th.  Mercury rules communication and its retrograde periods, when it appears to be traveling backwards, are often times when situations are revisited in order to find a new perspective.

Mars has been traveling retrograde since late December, creating tension and bringing aggression and assertive energy into the forefront of our consciousness.  Mars is the planet of drive, desire and anger – but also enthusiasm and motivation.  We NEED Mars to get out of bed in the morning, but when Mars is corrupted or repressed it can be unleashed in ways that are not helpful or comfortable.

George Zimmerman was born October 5, 1983 with the Sun in Libra bestowing a need to create harmony and peace in the world around him.  Yet he has a conjunction of Jupiter to Uranus, the two planets of liberation and freedom, in a challenging square to his Virgo Mars.  People with Mars in Virgo tend to be perfectionists: they see where their world needs to be changed and redefined and re-ordered for greater efficiency.  When Jupiter squares Mars there can be an overblown sense of confidence and assuredness in one’s own mission, and when Uranus squares Mars there is a fierce rebellion and desire to create change.  Mars in Virgo doesn’t really appreciate change – there is a tendency to cherish the security that comes from knowing that things will be predictable.  So Jupiter and Uranus are not particularly friendly to the Virgo Mars, and that is even less the case when they are locked in a challenging square formation.

When this dynamic combines with a Libra Sun who tries to mask all of this roiling conflict with a harmonious demeanor, you can get an explosion of anger and rage when that Mars is affected by a planetary transit and that is exactly what happened when the shooting occurred.  Transiting Uranus was in a nearly exact quincunx (150 degrees and before arguing with my use of this term please read this post) to his natal Mars, triggering a discomfort for which relief could not easily be found.

We know that Zimmerman had anger management issues: In 2005 he was arrested for interfering with an arrest with assault and battery on an officer, and that same year an ex-girlfriend filed a restraining order, claiming that he assaulted her. In 2005 Zimmerman’s progressed Uranus aligned exactly with his natal Jupiter, bringing the natal configuration to a head and inspiring a fierce need to explode out of any restrictions that would have been imposed on him.  And exacerbating this was a transit of Uranus in the sky, forming a challenging square to both the natal and the progressed combination.  Uranus transits demand that we pay attention and tend to create explosions of the repressed subconscious into the conscious mind where they must be acknowledged.  It’s easy to see how that would have triggered Zimmerman’s anger issues that were repressed by the Libra Sun.

Over the past few weeks this case has captured the attention of the nation as emblematic of the racism that still exists in this country.  Initial reports about the incident appeared to indict Zimmerman in cold-blooded murder with a racial motive.  With Uranus in an approaching square to Pluto, the planet of death and transformation, the revolutionary fervor that we saw last year when this cycle began is coming to a peak this summer and needs only a case like this to trigger widespread reaction.

Characteristic of the Mercury retrograde period we are currently in, a recent news article reports that much of what Zimmerman reported to police has been corroborated by witnesses.  Mars is at a virtual standstill right now in preparation to turn direct on April 14th and it will only travel about three degrees between now and the middle of May.  With Mars at a standstill, or “station,” its aggressive energy will force itself to the forefront of human experience so that it must be dealt with.  Right now Mars is part of the Grand Trine which tends to promote ease and lacks the power to generate much conflict.

It’s interesting that at the time around March 20-22nd when the investigations into this case began, Mars in the sky was exactly opposite Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing.  Chiron demands that we examine the root of the wound, and Mars stimulated that examination.  Mars will next oppose Chiron in mid to late May, at the time the Uranus/Pluto square is beginning to tighten.  I would watch that time for an explosion of protests in a number of different areas, but likely also regarding issues surrounding this case.

And what about Trayvon Martin’s chart – does it show someone who, as Zimmerman asserts, would assault a complete stranger in a public place at 7 pm?  With the Sun conjunct Mercury in Aquarius, Trayvon was a bright boy, and likely one that was easily bored.  Uranus, planet of rebellion, rules Aquarius and he would not have been a follower by nature, someone who steps in line when others tell him too.

Mars was opposite his Sun (though wide of Mercury), and his Mars was in Leo where it is boisterous and dramatic and driven (Mars) to shine and be admired and respected by others (Leo).  Mars was retrograde in the chart, making its expression more difficult and this could have created an experience of resentment and an inability to speak his mind when necessary.

His Moon was in Taurus and likely trine his Venus in Capricorn, so he was also grounded in his responsibilities towards others.  There is no water in this chart, so he likely lacked empathy and would have found it difficult to understand the feelings of others.

This is the chart of a rebel, but there’s not the kind of rage in this chart that we see in the chart of George Zimmerman.  Just before the shooting transisting Chiron squared his Sun, amplifying any wounds or emotional triggers that he may have had and that would have still be in in effect at the time of the shooting.

This is the chart of someone who would have been rebellious and sullen and who resisted being stopped by a self-appointed community watch vigilante with an attitude.  It’s hard to see this chart as someone who would attack another person out of the blue for no reason, although we CAN see that lack of impulse control in Zimmerman’s chart.

Posthumous astrology

natalee holloway declared deadIt’s interesting how astrology continues to work even after a person has left their physical body.  I happened to see that Natalee Holloway has now been officially declared dead, nearly seven years after her disappearance in Aruba in 2005.  Seven years is one Saturn cycle, which naturally also intrigued me to look into this a little further.

Natalee Holloway (born October 21, 1986, Clinton MS, time unknown) disappeared on May 30, 2005.  At the time, transiting Saturn was approaching a square to her Sun which culminated on June 30, 2005.  At the end of December transiting Saturn conjoined her Sun and less than two weeks later Natalee was finally declared dead at yesterday’s hearing.

Saturn presides over endings and the cutting off of things, as well as situations in our lives that challenge and test us.  Important events in our lives often come in seven year cycles, and because Saturn takes 28 – 30 years to make a complete cycle within the birthchart there are generally 6-8 years between Saturn cycles.  I’ve written about the “Seven Year Itch” and the fact that many marriages end at the seven-year point.

For Natalee Holloway, one transit of Saturn to her Sun witnessed her disappearance, and the next transit to her Sun witnessed her final demise.

The astrology of the Penn State scandal

On November 4, 2011 a grand jury indicted Jerry Sandusky, former assistant football coach at Penn State University, on 40 counts of sexual abuse against young boys.  Evidently these assaults or advances had been going on since 1994 despite the knowledge of other officials with the football team.

What is even more shocking is that Sandusky apparently used a charity that he founded (The Second Mile) to find the young boys (aged 11-14) for his misadventures which he is now calling “horseplay.”  Sandusky is married and he and his wife adopted six children and fostered many others before founding the charity. I am not a qualified psychologist, but the fact that Sandusky was able to continue this double life for nearly 20 years without detection would seem to suggest some sort of psychological pathology.  Let’s see what his chart says:

Jerry Sandusky (born January 26, 1944, time unknown, Washington Pennsylvania) is a double Aquarius: both the Sun and Moon are in that sign of rational thinking and reason.  We don’t know his birth time so we can’t tell his ascendant which would tell us more about his personality, but the Sun in Sandusky’s chart is opposed by Pluto (obsession, compulsion and experiences that transform us).  In their highest form the stress and challenges of Pluto/Sun aspects empower us and strengthen our will.  In individuals who are less self-reflective, this aspect can suggest an individual with deep-seated power issues and compulsions.

The kind of intense drama that is necessitated by Pluto/Sun aspects can be very difficult for Aquarian types who tend to dislike being dragged into the underworld of emotional chaos, and sometimes there is a split in the personality as a result.  This split can manifest as someone who attracts relationships with people who are Plutonic in nature, or it can manifest as someone who themselves has split the dark Plutonian side from the airy Aquarian side.

It is not uncommon for Pluto/Sun people to have experienced abuse of various types, and often this is sexual abuse.  Researchers have found that most sexual predators were themselves abused, and then perpetuate the abuse on others.  Sandusky’s Pluto/Sun opposition falls within a degree of the nodes of the Moon, the signposts that point from our past to our future, with the Sun conjunct the South Node (the past) and Pluto conjunct the North Node (the future).  There is a tremendous force of nature with Pluto conjunct the North Node, as the intensely transformative energy of Pluto pulls us relentlessly forward into our future.  This is a man who could accomplish great things in his life, and in fact he had a reputation of doing just that.  But he was undone by the compulsions that remained locked in the subconscious with no accepetable outlet.

Sandusky’s chart shows five retrograde planets, or six if we include Chiron.  That is an exceptional number of retrogrades (only 4% of the population have five retrograde planets in their chart), and suggests someone whose attention is turned so inward that the outer world becomes simply a reflection of their inner experience.  When we combine this with the fact that Sandusky’s chart lacks the water element which would induce compassion and empathy, it is easier to understand how he is coming across in interviews over the eruption of the scandal.

Mars represents our drives, and the sexual drive falls under that category along with other drives and instincts.  Sandusky’s Mars is in Gemini, which is a dual sign that is sometimes associated with sexual experimentation because Gemini has a hunger for a variety of experiences.  The fact that Mars conjoins Uranus, the planet of radical behavior and also the root of the word Uranian which is sometimes defined as the “third sex,” adds another layer to the idea that Sandusky’s sexuality is complex and requires a great deal of stimulation and new experiences.

It also doesn’t help him that Saturn (retrograde, signifying a deep self-criticism) opposes his Venus (relationships), bestowing an insecurity which often needs constant reassurance of one’s loveability and value.  Yet we also see a nearly exact Grand Trine in air, with Mars/Uranus in a trine to Neptune and the Sun/Pluto/Node system turning the Grand Trine into a Kite formation.  Grand Trines are supremely harmonious and they create ease in life, and an airy Grand Trine may suggest an individual who relies on reasoning and rationalization to avoid responsibility (earth) and feelings (water).  This is especially true for someone like Sandusky who is a double Aquarian with the powerful rationality of that sign, and who lacks the easy flow of emotion that the element of water would provide.

What makes the Penn State scandal really shocking is the complicity of the judges and police in the cover-up.  I won’t detail these events but you can read the whole sordid story here.

The astrology of the Troy Davis execution

Troy Davis astrologyDespite the efforts of Pope Benedict, former President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former Congressman Bob Barr (R) and former FBI Director William Sessions, Troy Davis (born October 9, 1968, time unknown) was put to death for the murder of police officer Mark MacPhail in 1989.  At the time transiting Saturn was sitting on his Sun.

Mr. Davis’s innocence was widely proclaimed, not only by his supporters but also by seven out of the nine witnesses that testified against him at trial.  Mr. Davis’s case is not the only one where an innocent man has been put to death for a crime he almost certainly did not commit.  The Innocence Project has a long list of convicted felons who were later exonerated, and here in North Carolina where I live the entire State Bureau of Investigation has been under investigation for errors ranging from incompetence to actual criminal behavior.

There are some interesting connections between the  chart of Mr. Davis and the (Sibley) chart for the United States.  The US chart contains an opposition between Saturn (testing and achievement) and Chiron (wounding and healing) that denotes the need of the nation to pay attention to the wounds that it inflicts on itself and others.  Saturn sits in the tenth house of the US chart, the house of the governmental body, where the “body of law” (Saturn) becomes of paramount importance at the expense of the truth, which we see with the presence of Neptune (illusion) in the ninth house of truth and ideology.

Mr. Davis  had an opposition of the Sun to Saturn, and his Sun sat on the Saturn of the US chart, with his Saturn sitting right on the US Chiron.  Mr. Davis was a man of peace:  Venus ruled both his Libra Sun and his Taurus Moon.  He was likely extremely insecure with retrograde Saturn (self-doubt) opposite his Sun, and with retrograde Mercury (mind and communication) opposite retrograde Saturn he probably had difficulty in school, perhaps with learning disabilities.

Neptune (creativity and confusion) opposed his Moon which generally suggests a daydreamer, yet his Mars was in Virgo which tends to suggest an individual who is eager to serve and help others.  Individuals with strong Neptune placements in the chart often find themselves scapegoats during their life since there tends to be confusion surrounding the personality.

There is nothing in Mr. Davis’s chart that would suggest violence or criminal behavior, but there is also nothing that would lead an astrologer to predict that he would end up in this kind of horrific situation.  At the time of his arrest his progressed Mars was exactly conjunct progressed Pluto within nine minutes, an extremely tight conjunction, which could lead an astrologer to predict that something significant would soon occur that would involve dealing with issues of violence or power conflicts.  In addition, his progressed Sun was in an exact quincunx to the lunar nodes, again suggesting that something big was likely to occur.

It appears that this event will have significant ramifications for the United States as a nation. If we look at the US (Sibley) chart at the time of Mr. Davis’s execution (September 21st, 2011 at 11:08 pm in Savannah Georgia), the ascendant of the execution chart sits right on the descendant of the US chart.  The ascendant/descendant axis in a national chart has to do with the way the nation defines its identity (ascendant) through the way others are treated (descendant).  The United States is in a 30-year Saturn Return cycle right now, and Saturn in the execution chart is exactly square to the transiting Moon which is in its own sign of Cancer, the sign of feeling and emotion, reflecting the desperation felt by Davis’s many supporters as they tried to stave off his impending murder.

This national acceptance of executing people for whom there is at least a reasonable doubt and despite DNA evidence that would exonerate them is a cancer on the soul of the nation that must be healed.  I tend to try to take a broader view of these situations, and I do believe that sometimes individuals enter into a spiritual contract to become the face of a problem that needs to be witnessed, and perhaps this is the case of Mr. Troy Davis.  I hope that his death is not then in vain, and that his growing numbers of supporters do not fall back asleep and avert their eyes when this happens again, as it almost surely will.

Mars and the London Riots

Disaffected young people have been rioting in England since the shooting on August 4th of a young suspect (Mark Duggan, age 29 and in his Saturn Return) during an arrest for gun crime in Tottenham in North London.  The riots began as a peaceful protest in Tottenham and escalated to full spread rioting and vandalism, spreading to other areas of London as well as Liverpool, Manchester and other working class cities in England.

Mars entered Cancer on August 4th.  In the emotionally sensitive sign of Cancer, Mars can be very touchy and reactive and as soon as Mars entered Cancer it began to form challenging aspects to Uranus (radical and rebellious activity) and Pluto (death and transformation of the power centers).  As you know if you’ve been reading this blog, we are just entering a four-year period in which Uranus and Pluto will be challenging each other in the sky, during which rebellion (Uranus) against the power structures (Pluto) is somewhat inevitable.

This is the opening square of a cycle of these two planets that began in the 1960s when Uranus and Pluto conjoined in Virgo.  At the time there was a tremendous rebellion against the conservative values (Virgo) of the 1950s and a great deal of pressure to create a new culture of freedom (Uranus).  In order to create something completely new, often something old must be destroyed.

The square (90 degree) aspect creates a crisis that must be resolved, so with Uranus in Aries in a square to Pluto in Capricorn any areas of the world in which liberty (Uranus) for the individual (Aries) is being subjugated by the power elite (Pluto) and the structures that embody that power (Capricorn), the planetary atmosphere is such that conflict is sure to occur.

Mars moves quickly and its cycles last only a few days, but it often serves to ignite the larger cycles.  In July the approaching square of Uranus and Pluto came within a degree, as tight an aspect as it will be until next year, but it wasn’t until Mars got involved that the firestorm of rage in England was ignited.  The young people that are burning down buildings and looting destroyed stores likely don’t know a thing about the death of young Mark Duggan but instead have been caught up in the thrill of rebellion.  One girl that was interviewed by the BBC said “this is our chance to show the rich people and the police that we can do what we want.”  You can clearly hear the voice of Uranus in Aries here flipping a finger to the Pluto in Capricorn power structures.

Young people in England began protesting and rioting against job cuts back in March of last year when Uranus entered Aries where it will travel for the next seven years (it dipped a toe into Aries but quickly retrograded back into Pisces).  Tottenham, where the riots began, has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.  With no jobs and no prospects, a huge subclass of individuals who live outside of conventional society is rising up but that is just one piece of the rioting picture.  The rioting population appears to embrace all cultures and all races in these poor London communities.

Mars made an exact square to Uranus yesterday, so the culmination of the rebellion has likely passed.  But now Mars is approaching an opposition aspect to Pluto that won’t peak until tomorrow (Thursday August  11th) at which time the opposition from police and other governmental bodies will likely take over.  As the opposition firms up the crowds are likely to scatter, but that doesn’t mean that the chaos will go away permanently, especially on the eve of the Uranus/Pluto square.
