Richard Nolle predicted the earthquake in Turkey

If you don’t already subscribe to Richard’s planetary forecast, I strongly recommend it. In his October forecast he notes that the Scorpio New Moon on October 26th is a SuperMoon with potential for significant geocosmic effects:

The likelihood of destructive storms, seismic events (including magnitude 5+ earthquakes and volcanic eruptions) as well as extreme tidal surges associated with the October 23-30 SuperMoon shock window is planet-wide in potential. If there are signs of particular target zones, they may be suggested by the astro-locality map for this alignment. This includes a longitudinal zone running from Iran up through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia; and along the middle Pacific coast of North America (including Alaska, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest as well as California in the US). There’s also a horizon arc sweeping northeasterly through Australia and across Papua New Guinea, on through the Pacific to Kamchatka, crossing the Bering Strait and running along northern Canada before turning southward to pass through the Atlantic just off the eastern tip of Brazil. When the headlines of the day are written, they’re bound to include some extreme storm, tide and seismic activity along one or more of these zones. (Note that some of the same target zones are emphasized in both the full and new moon astro-locality maps.)

Read the entire October forecast here. Richard Nolle is the originator of the term Supermoon to describe a moon that is closest to the Earth and therefore has a more powerful geocosmic effect.

Richard also suggests that this Supermoon period will bring about some economic improvement, saying “ it should be good for bonds, stocks and good strong currencies. Increased production and hiring look like part of this SuperMoon.” European markets are up today so we’ll see over the next few weeks whether Richard’s economic projections hold water.  The Sun is moving towards an opposition to Jupiter (expansion and confidence) that will peak right at the end of Richard’s Supermoon window on October 30th, so I suspect that this period will indeed be a strong one as consumer confidence expands along with the Sun and Jupiter.

Richard is also talking more about the Mars Max period, and I’ll be covering that more over the next couple of weeks.

Fires and floods

wildfireFires are burning in North Carolina, New Mexico and Arizona, floods are raging in North Dakota and the Phillipines.  Earlier this spring  record numbers of tornadoes ripped through areas of the country not known for them.

Earlier this spring we had a heavy preponderance of fire which is no longer the case, but we do have Uranus in Aries, which is extremely electrical, set off against the Sun and Pluto as I’ve been writing for the past week.  Transformative events which kill off the status quo are to be expected  now.  Uranus is slowing down in preparation for its retrograde turn in July so its influence is more powerful than usual.

It’s interesting to me that two of the current disasters – the New Mexico wildfire and the flood in North Dakota – are threatening nuclear power plants just as Uranus is at its tightest square to Pluto this year.  Pluto rules the kind of explosions and meltdowns that occur in power plants, and Uranus rules electricity and technology as well as radiation.  I think it’s likely that we will have further challenges to nuclear plants over the next few years as Uranus and Pluto  rages on.

A reader left me a voicemail today asking if I could write about the New Mexico fires and offer some meaning and comfort to the people affected, and unfortunately that is really outside the realm of astrological counseling.  The only comfort that I can offer is that there is a powerful energy shift that is moving across the planet – a shift that requires the complete repatterning (Uranus in Aries) of much of our society and the structures upon which we rely (Pluto in Capricorn) and the creation of new ones.  Sometimes the destruction of these structures occurs quite literally, and we must pick up the pieces and create something totally new in our lives.

Uranium and Plutonium = Uranus and Pluto

MOX fuelIn a stunning display of astrological synchronicity, it turns out that the reactor (known as Unit 3) in the Fukushima nuclear plant that exploded yesterday is more toxic than the other reactors because of the fuel that’s been used there.

At a press conference in Tokyo, Masashi Goto, who worked for Toshiba as a reactor researcher and designer, said the mixed oxide (MOX) fuel used in unit 3 of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant contains plutonium, which is much more toxic than the fuel used in the other reactors.
MOX fuel is a mixture of uranium and plutonium reprocessed from spent uranium, and is sometimes involved in the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium.

Uranus and Pluto are about seven degrees from an exact square (90 degree) formation, but with Uranus moving into Aries the faceoff between the two planets begins.  This summer the alignment between the two planets will be as close as it will be this year, about a degree from the exact square which will not culminate until next year.

I’m not a scientist, and perhaps some of my scientist readers (and husband) will weigh in on this issue. It is my understanding that Uranium has some unique (of course) properties in that it can quickly generate a nuclear reaction but cannot sustain it.  This correlates with the qualities of astrological which instigates a radical reaction but often doesn’t stay around to put the pieces back together.  Plutonium is evidently made FROM Uranium and in combination with Uranium can sustain a chain nuclear reaction for power plants.

The combination of Uranium and Plutonium would be the astrological equivalent of a conjunction, in which the elements are fused and work as a team.  But we are looking at the upcoming square between the two planets – a 90 degree angle in which Uranus and Pluto are in conflict with each other.  Under this symbology we could find that the combination of Uranium and Plutonium in nuclear plants creates a crisis (under the square aspect) that requires an adjustment to resolve.

This could be an area of concern all over the world, since the use of MOX fuel in nuclear reactors is increasing.   Several plants in the US to deliver MOX fuel are under construction, including one in South Carolina that is slated to begin operations in 2016, hopefully safely past the end of the Uranus/Pluto square.  Many are already  concerned about the suitability of MOX fuel for nuclear reactors, as evidenced in this article from February 2011, and the current meltdown in Japan won’t soon change their minds.

Will the Supermoon wreak more havoc on the world?

SupermoonAstrology is back in the mainstream news, with articles like this that have been circulating the internet lately:

The powerful tsunami that today slammed into Japan’s eastern coast comes just two days after warnings that the movement of the moon could trigger unpredictable events on Earth.

Astrologers predicted that on March 19 – a week tomorrow – the so-called ‘supermoon’ will be closer to Earth than at any time since 1992, just 221,567 miles away, and that its gravitational pull will bring chaos to Earth.

Others on the Internet have predicted it will cause further catastrophes such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

I’ve written quite a few times on this blog about the “Supermoon” phenomenon, which can be traced back to astrologer Richard Nolle who coined the term.  A “Supermoon” is said to occur when the Full Moon is at perigee, meaning it is closer to the Earth than any other time.  Is the March 19 Supermoon that different from any other Full Moon at perigee?

Now that Richard is being bombarded with questions on this topic he’s put up a special page to clarify the mystery:

There are 4-6 SuperMoons a year. The one on March 19, 2011 is in fact the closest SuperMoon of the year, but it’s not by any means the first one in 18 years, nor even the first extreme SuperMoon in 18 years. The truth is, March 19 will be the second SuperMoon this year, and we only have to go back to January 30, 2010 to find the last example of an extreme SuperMoon; as revealed in my tables published in the last century. There was a SuperMoon in effect February 12-21 this year in fact, which anyone who actually read my 2011 World Forecast Highlights would know. And I’m sure you’re aware of the Christchurch earthquake that practically destroyed that city on the last day of that interval. …

SuperMoons are noteworthy for their close association with extreme tidal forces working in what astrologers of old used to call the sublunary world: the atmosphere, crust and oceans of our home planet – including ourselves, of course. From extreme coastal tides to severe storms to powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the entire natural world surges and spasms under the sway of the SuperMoon alignment – within three days either way of the exact syzygy, as a general rule.

There are other astrological factors at work during this March 19th period, however.  The Full Moon on March 19th occurs just one day before the Spring Equinox which will feature the Sun in Aries in an exact conjunction with Uranus.  Because the charts for the Equinoxes and Solstices can be used in predicting weather and events for the upcoming season, that is a powerful alignment in Aries, a fire sign, signifying more weather changes and potentially more explosions and wildfires.

I’ll be writing more about the Equinox chart over the next week or so.

And now, earthquakes and tsunamis

Anyone who has been reading this blog will remember that when Pluto (the destroyer/renewer) entered Capricorn, the Earth sign of material stability, I (and other astrologers) predicted that when Uranus, the planet of radical change, entered Aries and began to form a challenging square to Pluto that earthquakes, pole shifts and other earth changes were likely to occur.

Right on schedule, with Uranus entering Aries today, the largest earthquake ever to hit Japan (8.9 magnitude) struck today, resulting in a tsunami that swept across the Pacific and forced evacuations in California and the entire west coast of the United States.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Mount Karangetang also erupted today, just hours after the earthquake in Japan, and new studies suggest that “resting” volcanoes can wake up much more quickly than previously believed possible.  Uranus can be fairy explosive in its actions, and in the fiery sign of Aries is associated with volcanoes and other explosions of fire.

Not only has Uranus just entered Aries, the Planetary K index has been at a high level of 5 for the past 24 hours.  The Planetary K index measures the level of geomagnetic activity, and an elevated K-index can bring about disturbances not only in satellite equipment, but also in the electromagnetic fields with which we are surrounded and in which we live.  So if you are feeling somewhat scattered today it’s probably not your imagination!

Pluto and Ceres: The Hungarian red sludge disaster

The first phase of the Pluto/Ceres conjunction brought us the Horizon oil rig disaster, and now as Ceres prepares to conjoin Pluto for the second time we have a “flood of red sludge” that could equal or exceed the negative effects to the environment of the oil spill:

As Hungarian authorities take stock of the formidable task to clean up a toxic sludge spill that has killed at least four people, many environmentalist groups say the government should outlaw storing toxic red sludge from alumina processing in open reservoirs.

Those living near the Ajkai Aluminia Refinery, which is about 100 miles southwest of Budapest, say a wave of “red mud,” which is a byproduct from turning bauxite into alumina, washed through their towns Monday afternoon after a dam that holds the sludge burst.

At least 100 people have been injured in the incident that has prompted officials to issue a state of emergency for the communities near the refinery. Several days of heavy rains caused the dam to break.

“The long-term consequences could be very bad,” says Marton Vau of Greenpeace Hungary, noting that the sludge could leak into the drinking water supply, and, if allowed to dry, could become airborne and inhaled. The alkaline substance, which is already responsible for killing fish in local rivers, could also threaten the Danube River.

Sadly, humans have very short memories and no sooner was it clear that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico did not appear as devastating as feared (although the long-term effects are not yet known), oil companies were clamoring to expand deep ocean drilling.  But the combination of Pluto’s potentially devastating transformations with Ceres’ call to respect the Earth will be a potent reminder that humans are frail creatures, completely dependent upon the grace of mother nature.

Catching up after vacation: Horizon Oil Rig disaster

I’m back, and what a wonderful vacation!  But there is so much to write about…

I wrote about this oil spill a few months ago in connection with the conjunction of Pluto to Ceres that was occurring at the time.  But it’s now clear that this eruption is a major ecological disaster that could have horrific long-range effects so I took another look at the chart of the event (April 20, 2010, 9:45 am CDT, coordinates 28N 88W).  This chart shows the approaching Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in Pisces (the sea) straddling the Midheaven and opposite Saturn (challenge and tests) sitting on the Nadir of the chart.  The Moon is in Cancer (more water) and it conjoins the South Node exactly.

I have long written that when Uranus in Aries begins to square Pluto in Capricorn we would see the beginnings of serious earth changes, including earthquakes and volcanoes.  Astrology never works exactly the way we predict because the Universe needs to surprise us into change, and here instead of a volcano we have an explosion of oil from beneath the sea.

This disaster is likely to have long-ranging implications that include changes in the way we approach the hunt for oil (especially as Neptune moves into its own sign of Pisces next year (Neptune and Pisces rule all liquids including oil AND the sea), and with Pluto in Capricorn, the sign of the corporation, we may see the collapse of certain corporations that have had a stranglehold on the global economy such as British Petroleum, the owner of the Horizon rig.  BP has been a major player in the Iraq oil fields as well, and it is my hope that when Uranus comes along to square Pluto some of these megalopolies will be destroyed.

The Astrology of “Climategate”

climate.jpg

The case for the fight against global warming took a blog in late November when a hacker stole more than 1,000 emails and 3,000 other documents from the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia.  The unidentified hacker then uploaded a copy of the documents to the Real Climate website on November 17.
At the time, Saturn was in an exact square (90 degree angle) to Pluto.  Saturn regulates the establishment, and Pluto is the Great Transformer so when these two are in conflict, there is general an upheaval in the established order of things.  In its role as Lord of the Underworld, Pluto is also the revealer of secrets and anything that has been buried.
At one time “global warming” was the radical idea, but over the past ten years the concept that the earth is warming and that humans have something to do with it has taken hold and is the prevailing theory in scientific research.  So in this instance, the global warming theory is represented by Saturn, and here comes Pluto to upset the applecart and create conflict among scientists.
The story really took hold around November 20th, with Mars (in Leo, where the assertive energy of Mars gets to be even more inspired and grand in its gestures) in a close square to both Venus, goddess of human relations, and Ceres, goddess of the Earth.  Mars/Venus squares often signify conflicts in our interpersonal relations.  Ceres is an Earth goddess, but more than that she represents the relationship between the Earth and human sustenance.  There is a sense with this aspect of an aggressive (Mars) rush to protect the Earth (Ceres) and her resources, regardless of any need to protect harmony (Venus) in the research field.
On November 22nd the Sun entered Sagittarius, the sign of philosophy and expanded ideas, and the research community struck back against the charges of conspiracy.
On December 1, as Uranus (science and technology, radical ideas) stationed (stood still) before changing direction, the director of the hacked research unit stepped down from his post until the completion of the investigation.  There is a suggestion here of a change of perspective, and the opportunity for new ideas (Uranus) to enter the field of climate research.
On December 3, the day that Uranus changed direction (turning direct from its retrograde passage), the chairman of the UN Panel on Climate Change announced that it will conduct an independent investigation into the climate email case.
At the same time, Jupiter (search for meaning) moved into alignment with Chiron (healing of old wounds) and that conjunction peaks today just as the conference on climate change in Copenhagen begins.
When I am looking at the chart of a client trying to figure out the nature of the experiences he or she is going through, the planets tell the story.  Planetary cycles create problems when things in our life are out of balance.  In this case, it appears that the case for global warming is off track and needs to be adjusted.  First we have Saturn and Pluto creating the necessary upheaval so that a complete reformation can take place.  Then we have Uranus changing direction and breathing some fresh air into the argument.  And finally, Jupiter and Chiron seeking to resolve the disputes of the past and create real change that will heal the problems of the planet.
We would all like to think that being “right” is better than being “wrong.”  But in the end, it is the Truth that counts.
