Mars turns direct, April 13-15 2012

mars direct 2012Note: Planets are said to be “retrograde” when they appear to move backwards from our perspective on Earth.  They are not actually moving backwards, or “the wrong way” as a friend of mine likes to say.  And there is nothing “wrong” about retrogrades – it’s a normal planetary cycle. Retrograde periods help us to reassess and revisit areas of life that require more attention before we can move on with our lives, but for this reason they can be somewhat frustrating and demand attention.

Although Mars didn’t actually turn retrograde until January, its motion began to slow down in December 2011 marking the actual beginning of the retrograde period.  From my observations and from a practical standpoint, retrogrades begin when the planetary movement slows down in anticipation of the retrograde turn, and end after the planet has turned direct and picks up steam again.

In my own world this has been a particularly problematic time, especially with both Mercury and Mars retrograde at the same time.  While Mercury retrograde periods are rather frequent — usually we have four three-week periods in a year — Mars retro periods only occur every couple of years.

Managing these retrograde periods is rather like riding on a boat in choppy waters.  If you allow your body to move with the waves you tend not to get seasick, but if you resist the movement of the water you can become very sick indeed.  And even the most experienced of sailors can experience motion sickness if the rough waters continue for too long a period of time, and this is what many of us have experienced.

The stationary period of the Mars cycle begins April 13th and Mars turns direct on April 15th around 1 am EDT/4 am GMT.  While Mars is stationary over the next few days there could be a big release of any pent-up energy that has been building over the retrograde period.  I have read articles that suggest that any action is inadvisable during the Mars retro period, and in fact received personal advice to that effect from my dear friend Dharmaruci regarding my blog struggle.  I would argue that this really depends upon the nature of Mars in your own chart and how it is affected by the retro Mars.  For me, with Mars in Capricorn, the Mars station is exactly trine my own Mars and fueling my desire for action in a way that cannot be denied.

Mars by its very nature signifies a force that demands expression.  I have often written about “Mars problems” that create health issues when the aggressive force of Mars is denied expression and creates energetic blocks in the body.  Mars retrograde periods make the outer expression of that force more difficult but that doesn’t mean it’s not necessary.  Any force that has been withheld during the retro period is likely to burst forth with Mars turning direct so I advise physical activity during this time so that the energy of Mars can find a more balanced expression as the direct turn commences.

Mars has been opposite Neptune for the past week or so and because Neptune tends to obfuscate and cloud the directness of Martian expression things may still appear a bit fuzzy.  It will be another week or so before the Neptunian misty cloud lifts and during that time our desires and intentions may still be unclear.  This is a good time to wait before initiating action, but meanwhile prepare and plan in good Mars in Virgo fashion.  Remember Pluto has just turned retrograde so it will be the smaller things that make the difference!

Pluto retrograde hits the stock market

The US stock markets saw their steepest declines of the year today after a week of downward movement as Pluto slowed down to a crawl in preparation to turn retrograde today.

A very brief (5 minute) study disproved my initial theory that Pluto retrograde events correlated with a downturn in the stock market.  But every market period is different and brings with it unique combinations of planetary energies that affect investors in different ways.

The stock market has been on an upswing since November, buoyed by the perception that the financial crisis is ending.  But Mars is opposing Neptune now, and the drive to achieve and to do (Mars) is clouded by Neptunian disillusionment and confusion, which has likely made the approaching Plutonic dynamic seem overly dark and scary.

Pluto is stationing right now – it won’t actually turn retrograde until the 11th.  The opposition of Mars to Neptune will continue over the next week as Mars itself stations and turns direct, at which point we will see more forward movement in every area of our lives.

Meanwhile, this is probably a time to pull back and adopt a “wait and see” attitude before jumping into the markets.  With all of these reversals it will take some time for the truth to filter through the illusion and reality to set in.

Astrology in my world: Mars, Pluto and the Astrological Musings blog

If you’re on my mailing list you received an announcement about the change to this blog, but some of you have emailed me wanting to know what has happened so here’s the scoop (the abbreviated version):

Many of you have been with me since the beginning in 2005 when I was on the Blogger platform.  In 2007 I was contacted by Beliefnet who wanted to carry my blog on their site, and in 2008 I agreed and signed a contract with them.  They pulled the RSS feed of all of my posts at that time.

As some of you know, over time the advertising on Beliefnet became more and more offensive and I started carrying an ad-free copy of the blog on my own website.  Last year Patheos contacted me about moving my blog to their site, and in January of this year I made the decision to move to Patheos. (Mars was stationing before turning retrograde but it was about a week from the retrograde turn.)

Everything was going fine until Patheos received a threatening letter from Beliefnet attorneys stating that they OWN the trademark and the blog Astrological Musings.  Rather than provide me with an opportunity to defend this charge, Patheos followed the advice of their attorneys and took the blog down.

Of course all of this is occurring with both Mars (aggression and defense) and Pluto (destruction and nuclear warfare) stationary in the sky, forcing latent conflicts into the open where they must be fought.

I have filed for the trademark Astrological Musings and have sent a letter to the Beliefnet attorneys but in the meantime Beliefnet has hired another writer to write Astrological Musings on their site.  It’s hard to say how much effect my letter to Beliefnet will have – after all, I am just a tiny fish and Beliefnet is a large corporation with a phalanx of lawyers on staff.

It doesn’t really matter – and other than fighting for the principle of the matter it’s the writing that’s the point here at this blog – there are plenty of other sites that incorporate “Astrological Musings” into the title.  Transiting Uranus (innovation and change) is in an exact trine to my progressed Ascendant (my evolving persona in the world) this week, so there is a sense of liberation here and freedom for greater self-expression.

So I thank you for your support, and for continuing to find this blog no matter where it lives!

Sunday inspiration for Mars direct: Becoming a soul warrior

Oya, the Warrior Goddess, by Francisco Santos

Mars turns direct next week and is stationary now and quite strong.  Mars represents the inner warrior – our courage and ability to defend ourselves.

Once there was a young warrior. Her teacher told her that she had to do battle with fear.

She didn’t want to do that. It seemed too aggressive; it was scary; it seemed unfriendly. But the teacher said she had to do it and gave her the instructions for the battle.

The day arrived. The student warrior stood on one side, and fear stood on the other. The warrior was feeling very small, and fear was looking big and wrathful. They both had their weapons.

The young warrior roused herself and went toward fear, prostrated three times, and asked, “May I have permission to go into battle with you?” Fear said, “Thank you for showing me so much respect that you ask permission.”

Then the young warrior said, “How can I defeat you?” Fear replied, “My weapons are that I talk fast, and I get very close to your face. Then you get completely unnerved, and you do whatever I say. If you don’t do what I tell you, I have no power. You can listen to me, and you can have respect for me. You can even be convinced by me. But if you don’t do what I say, I have no power.”

In that way, the student warrior learned how to defeat fear.

Pluto turns retrograde April 10th

Pluto retrogradeI don’t know where this image came from but I found it here.

Having just completed a retrograde turn of Mercury, and just coming out of the retrograde period of Mars, you may not be overjoyed to learn that now Pluto will turn retrograde. However, like everything else astrological, retrograde Pluto serves a higher purpose.

The outer planets travel retrograde for about six months every year, and for the last 30 years or so they have been retrograde in the summer (northern hemisphere). When a planet changes direction it is like a car that makes a U-turn, it’s motion appears to slow down and it becomes what we call “stationary” in the sky. Pluto has only moved two degrees since January and it will remain between 7 and 9 degrees Capricorn until the end of the year.

No planet is better at completing old patterns and clearing away the leftover detritus than Pluto, and when Pluto is retrograde, as it is for about half the year, we are forced to look backwards at our successes, our mistakes, our plans, our relationships – anything in our lives that has unfinished business will be re-examined during this time and anything that we are carrying around that is no longer needed will be swept away like the pollen after a rain.

Pluto is the planet of destruction and regeneration, and it also deals with issues of power and its uses. Its not surprising that now, with Pluto having been stationary in the sky (from our perspective here on earth) for the past few weeks as it prepared to change direction, things have been so intense for so many of us. When a planet is stationary it shines a laser-like beam of energy that reflects the energy of the planetary symbolism, and Pluto is all about intensity and getting to the root of the matter.

In addition, the challenging square between Uranus (revolution) and Pluto (destruction) culminates this summer at 8 degrees Capricorn. This phase of the cycle will be particularly challenging for those of us with planets between 5 and 15 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn) as we are forced to let go of the old (Pluto in Capricorn) and allow ourselves to be infused with the new energetic force (Uranus in Aries) that is bursting through at this time.

We will most easily manage this time if we stop holding onto the past and learn to trust the future. The Universe strives for balance, and as we let go of the aspects of our life that are decaying we will find a fresh new beauty in our lives.

Libra Full Moon

Full Moon in LibraThe Libra Full Moon on April 6th balances the individuality and self-motivation of the Aries Sun with the Libran urge for peace and balance. At the Full Moon the conscious solar influence (Aries) is opposite the instinctive lunar and more personal needs (Libra), and like any opposition a balance between the two is required.

The lunar ruler here is Venus, and with Venus in chatty Gemini you can be sure that a conversation will be required. Venus is still in range of the square to Neptune, so things may not be exactly as they seem, and Venus is approaching a square to irritating Mars which suggests that personal conflicts could occur. Mars is the solar ruler in this Full Moon since Mars rules the sign of Aries, and when the lunar ruler is in a hard aspect to the solar ruler in the chart of a Full Moon we know that this is going to be very significant.

The urge of Venus and Libra to find balance and harmony in interpersonal relationships sometimes comes at the cost of our individual needs as represented by Mars and Aries. The urge of Mars and Aries to assert ourselves independently of others often comes at the cost of personal relationships as represented by Venus and Libra. Balancing our own needs (Mars/Aries) with the needs of others (Venus/Libra) is the key to any healthy relationship and this is the theme of this Full Moon.

There is the potential for self-delusion here, not only with the Venus/Neptune square but also with Mercury in Pisces which prefers to take the high road and avoid any kind of confrontation, even when necessary. And Mars is moving into an opposition to Neptune where its aggression can become more passive and more difficult to express directly.

All of these factors will need to be seamlessly integrated in order to be effective during the Full Moon. Observe your relationships to see where personal needs are out of balance with relationship needs. See where you might be blind to the reality of a situation, and where you need to step up to the plate and assert yourself more clearly. Or if you are more the Arien type, perhaps you are the one who is ignoring the needs of others. This is the time to find that balance and improve all relationships.

Mercury turns direct today!

Mercury direct 2012When Mercury is retrograde all kinds of chaos can ensue and this is the one astrological factor that more than any other single one helps to convince the skeptic about the validity of astrology.

This Mercury retrograde period was likely more difficult for many of us because Mercury began the retrograde journey in Aries.  Aries is all about moving forwards – as quickly and with as little thought as possible.  So Mercury in Aries really resists that forced turn backwards of the retrograde, and on the journey it slipped back into Pisces where things may have become a bit confused.  What actually was happening, of course, was that intuition (Pisces) was taking a front seat to intellect, but that’s not always an easy transition to make.

All retrogrades do serve their purpose, and these are times to look back over anything that needs revision or re-imagining.  But with Mercury turning direct we will begin to turn our attention once again to the future, and those pesky breakdowns of communication (Mercury) equipment are likely to diminish.  Mercury will re-enter Aries on the 16th, just after Mars (ruler of Aries) turns direct after a long retrograde period itself.  At that point we will likely feel that we are being shot out of a cannon, like a rubber band that has been pulled to its maximum before being released.

Happiest age said to be 33, but I’m not buying it

happiest ageA survey by the British social networking site “Friends United” concludes that more people were happy at the age of 33 than at any other time.  Evidently 7 out of 10 respondents “over the age of 40″  selected age 33 as the time when they were the happiest.

I was unable to find anything that outlined the methodology of this study.  Were respondents given a list of every age between birth and death and 7 out of 10 selected 33 at random?  Or were they given a selection of ages and 33 was the one that spanned, say, from 30-35?  Without that information the study is useless astrologically.  But naturally, I’m going to try to make it relevant anyway.

The Saturn Return transit event happens when we are 28-30 years old, and then again at 56-59 or so.  Saturn, being the planet of discipline and responsibility, creates situations in our lives that force us to grow up during the Saturn Return.  For some this means the most difficult time in their lives – for others, the ones who use this time to focus on career achievement and family live, it can be the most successful.

Jupiter Returns occur more frequently, about every 12 years.  Jupiter is the planet of expansion, confidence and optimism, and the Jupiter returns correlate to a general feeling of happiness and faith in the way that life is turning out.  The first Jupiter Return after the Saturn Return occurs at age 34-36 and is a welcome respite after the pressure of the Saturn Return.

We don’t usually notice when everything in our life is flowing under a Jupiter transit – I always say that no one comments when the temperature in the room is “just right.”  When doors are opening and opportunities are coming our way – we feel good about life, but we don’t generally observe that fact.  We typically only notice when we’re uncomfortable or challenged.  But after a 2-3 year cycle like the Saturn Return, when we go through a period of expansion and good fortune under Jupiter it becomes much more apparent.

I hope that this group will publish their survey so that this can be analyzed in more detail.  Respondents were said to be only “over 40.”  It is sad to me that people look back at their youth as being the time when they were the happiest rather than finding the gifts that are given at every age.  I’m in my second Saturn Return now, so you can see how old I am at this point, and I can truthfully say that I am happier than I have ever been.  As we age and mature and hopefully work on unraveling the bounds of our personality conflicts and issues we become more comfortable in our own skin – happier with who we are and the life that we’ve made for ourselves.

Another UK study quoted in Psychology Today found that it was people over 60 who were the happiest.  Here again we have the Jupiter return following the second Saturn Return and resolving many of the issues that we face as we enter the Third Age of life.  This study found, not surprisingly, that the happiness quotient is at its lowest in the mid-40s, the time of the “midlife crisis transits.” The 40s are an intense time of challenge and pressure to evolve, and it can be the worst of times as well as the best of times as we let go of our past selves.

If in our 50s and 60s we are still longing for our 30s, something isn’t right and it’s quite time to do something about it!  I will leave you with this excerpt from the Psychology Today article:

In old age, a large number of the psychological attachments which normally support our sense of identity fall away. One of the major ones is the attachment to hopes and ambitions. At the end of their working lives, knowing that they may not have many years left, old people stop imagining alternative futures for themselves. They stop striving to become something else, and begin to accept themselves and their lives as they are. Rather than living for the future, they become more present-centred. In addition, they’re likely to lose their attachment to their appearance, to become free of the pressure to ‘look good’ and to stop using their looks as a way of seeking affirmation. They’re also forced to give up their attachment to our careers, along with the status and identity they gave. And now that their children have left home, they’re forced to give up their role as parent-carers too.

Of course, these losses can be painful, at least initially. And we’ve all met old people who never recover from them. They become bitter and cynical, wishing they were young still young and attractive, that they still had their jobs to make them feel valued and important, or that their lives had turned out differently.

But for many others, this process of letting go brings a new authenticity. It brings them into contact with their ‘core selves’, the essence which was obscured by all of these attachments. Now that they’re no longer focussed on finding happiness outside themselves, they begin to find it inside. They begin to realise that they don’t actually need external things for their happiness, and find a natural contentment in simply being.

Monday repost: Born on the Cusp

With over six years of archives, there are some older posts that still have relevance today.  This is a post from 2005 that I have updated and expanded for your reading enjoyment.

zodiac cuspThe signs of the zodiac change every 30 days, and there is a brief period while the Sun passes from one sign to another that is known as the “cusp.” Some people believe that individuals born several days before or after this time possess aspects of both signs, but in actual fact a planet is either one sign or another, there is really no such thing as a literal cusp.  The idea of the Sun being on the cusp arose from newspaper so-called “horoscopes” which can’t pinpoint a Sun Sign for every reader because the date of entry of the Sun into a sign varies from year to year.  Technically, the Sun is said to enter a sign when the actual center of the Sun is aligned with the zero degree point of that sign.  However, in some cases the experience of being “on the cusp” does manifest in a chart.

When the Sun is leaving a sign, during the last two degrees or so, it’s focus is moving towards the next sign and we often find an influence from the next sign beginning to make itself known; however, that doesn’t mean that individuals born during this time are hybrids of both signs.  If your birthday is on the last few days of Sagittarius, you are definitely a Sagittarian, but aspects of Capricorn are peeking into your personality. You may possess a greater degree of responsibility than those born even just a few days before, you may be more goal oriented and have less of a desire for adventure.

Once the Sun passes into the next sign, however, it fully takes on the quality of that sign and there is no “cusp” effect. Think about a person in a doorway ready to walk from one room to another. Their body may be in the room they are leaving, but their attention is fully in the next room.  Consequently, those born with the Sun in the first few degrees of an astrological sign can consider themselves fully members of that clan!

April Planetary Illuminations are posted

You can read the entire article here, but for your convenience here is an overview of the major planetary news for April:

As April begins, Mercury and Mars are both at a virtual standstill in preparation for their change of direction this month. Mercury will turn direct on April 4 th and Mars, retrograde since January 23 rd, turns direct on April 13 th. Mars and Mercury are both planets of motion: Mars represents our energy, our enthusiasm, and our drive to make things happen, and Mercury deals with matters of the mind and transmission of thoughts and ideas as well as people.

When the two planets of action are in retrograde motion, meaning they appear to move backwards from our perspective on earth, it can be difficult to get things moving. Mars retrograde can cause frustration and irritation as our will and desire are stymied at every turn, and Mercury retrograde can make it difficult to implement our plans and goals with its need to re-evaluate and re-pair which necessitates that we must look over our shoulder instead of forward.

In early April the stationary motion of both of these planets are likely to continue that frustration, but once Mercury turns direct on the 4 th it will become easier to plan and visualize the future although the actual implementation likely won’t come easily until after Mars changes direction on the 14 th. Many people have reported an inability to sleep and a great deal of agitation under the stationary Mars influence, so plan to get a great deal of physical activity to help to release the pent-up energy as productively as possible.

At the same time we are in the middle of a conjunction of Mercury to Uranus in Aries which began in early March and will finish at the end of April. Because Uranus stimulates new ideas and innovation, along with a frustration at anything that is stifling or stale, this cycle demands that we look at our world in a different way. It can be difficult to sleep, especially because of the Aries factor which is highly energized and passionate, yet the retrogrades have meant that forward movement is difficult.

And last but not least, we also have a powerful influence of Pluto, the planet of transformation and renewal, since it too is stationary as it prepares to retrograde on April 10 th. When a planet is stationary (and in early April we have three stationary planets), its influence is focused like a laser beam and we become more and more aware of experiences that fall under its domain. Under Pluto we are dealing with secrets and the dark side of life that usually remains hidden from view but which needs to be revealed so that true transformation may occur.
