There’s a reason they call them cosmic!

cosmic raysCosmic Ray Origin still mysterious

I don’t know much about cosmic rays, but I do love it when science can’t explain everything.  Cosmic Rays are a bombardment of tiny electrical particles to earth from deep space and scientists recently discovered that the supernova explosions or gamma ray bursts which formerly were thought to cause these rays to enter our atmosphere are not actually the cause, leaving  us to wonder what is really going on here.

We who are working in the field of consciousness and personal evolution talk about how the energy is changing now, and about the shift in consciousness.  But we never discuss where this energy creating these shifts come from – there is a general consensus that we can feel these energetic changes but not being scientists we tend not to analyze their source.

Wired News reported in 2010 that incoming cosmic rays reached a new high in 2009.  Space scientist Richard Mewaldt of Caltech is quoted in the article: “It’s sort of like everything’s working in the same direction right now, to allow cosmic rays greater access to the inner solar system.”  This occurred during the “solar minimum” when the sun’s energy was at its lowest, perhaps permitting more of the powerful rays to reach the earth’s atmosphere.  Some speculative journalists like David WIlcock have written of a stream of new energy coming from the Galactic Center, and astrologically Pluto conjoined the Galactic Center in 2006-2007 which potentially could have opened a doorway for these forces.

Wow: a big solar eruption

The sun has been very active over the past few years; as I wrote in August 2010 the prolonged “solar minimum” period meant that the maximum period which follows would be delayed somewhat beyond the predicted 2012 date. Solar cycles tend to last anywhere between 9 and 14 years, but they average about 11 years. Most astronomers now say that the current solar maximum cycle will peak in late 2013, thereby relieving the stress of doomsday predictions which suggest that a breakdown of the electrical grid could cause the predicted end of the world in 2012.

The late Sathya Sai Baba on the 2012 bandwagon

2012 end of Mayan calendarWith all due respect to the late Sathya Sai Baba, who was a controversial guru beloved by many before he died this spring, this recent interview with him shows an exceptional ignorance about the cycles (and lack of them) that are tied into the 2012 phenomenon.  (For more details about 2012 please see this article.)

In this interview Sai Baba is quoted:

Well, in one way there are several prophecies that signal this date like a term or important conclusion in the history of humanity, but the most significant is the end of the Mayan calendar, which prophecy has been interpreted in different ways. The most negative ones think that during this year the world will end, but it will not be like that, it is known that during that year a new era will start, the Age of Aquarius.

This has to do with the rotation of the whole solar system (solar cycle) that goes passing through the different eras each one of them lasts 5125 years. The era in which we now are, called the Age of Pisces, started on the year 3113 B.C. and ends on 2012.

This is all kinds of incorrect.  The Great Ages last approximately 2160 years each (with Great Wheel of Ages taking approximately 25,920 years to complete.  We do not know exactly when the Aquarian Age begins but none of the theories use 2012 as the transition point.

The 5125 year cycle is the Mayan Long Count cycle, but that cycle is completely unrelated to the transition into the Age of Aquarius after 2160 years in the Piscean Age.

I report this not to be critical, but to continue to try to clear up so much of the confusion and illusion (Neptune in Pisces anyone?) over the whole 2012 phenomenon.  I personally believe that we are in the transition from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age – if you figure a 5% orb of influence for the Great Ages just as we use for planetary transits, that gives us a buffer zone of 108 years as we move into the Aquarian Age.  So I feel that we are beginning to experience the mutation and personal changes to help facilitate that evolution, especially in the children that are coming into the world now.

Still, maybe it’s just my Sun/Saturn conjunction but I feel it’s important to try to separate fact from fiction where 2012 is concerned.

The Sun is definitely waking up

After a prolonged “solar minimum,”  with record long periods without sunspots, the Sun has become extremely active again.  These periods of solar maximum alternating with solar minimum are a normal part of solar activity but the last solar minimum was particularly long: 12.4 years rather than the usual 11 years.

A positive effect of the delay in the return of sunspot activity is that the maximum period will not coincide with December 2012 as previously feared.  This was one of the explanations for the fearmongering surrounding the December 2012 date, but it’s now behind schedule and the maximum of the maximum period likely won’t arrive until 2013 or 2014.

In the meantime, Spaceweather reports that “the entire Earth-facing side of the Sun erupted in a tumult of activity” with a C3-class flare, a solar tsunami, radio bursts, coronal mass ejection (CME) and more.  The impact of the CME hit the Earth’s magnetic field today at 1:30 pm EDT.

It’s interesting (but not necessarily significant) that this burst of solar energy comes when there’s a lot of planetary energy anyway with Mars and Saturn facing off against Jupiter and Uranus.

CMEs can sometimes affect communication satellites and power grids, but this C-class flares typically do not create a lot of problems.  But those in northern latitudes may be treated to some nice auroras!

Native perspectives on 2012

Molly at About Astrology has posted some interesting links on the 2012 connection to native American wisdom.  Molly writes:

I recently moved to the edge of a forest, and it’s made it possible to have more direct experiences of both nature and the cosmos. I get the sense of coming home to things I knew as little girl. One is that animals and all life is sacred. I’ve personally felt a shift from living more in my head, to living in the heart. And that’s the shift that indigenous wisdom keepers say is happening now. It’s the heart that’s tuned in to nature and animals that way.

She has links to a wonderful video with a Lakota Sioux wisdom keeper that is well worth watching as well.

Jupiter meets Uranus and the countdown begins

Jupiter Uranus conjunction(Please refrain from making scatalogical jokes!)  Well folks, we’re getting down to it – the planetary drama that has  been much discussed over the past few years is finally upon us.  Our challenge is to be alert and aware of the impending explosion into consciousness of  a new awareness and experience, without devolving into fear as change begins to spin our world around.

The countdown to the Cardinal Drama, as I like to call it, really began back in early 2008 when Pluto entered Capricorn.  The Cardinal signs are the signs of initiation and change: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn.  They are the most active of the signs, and planets in these signs tend to dominate other planetary influences.  The movement of Pluto (death and rebirth) into Capricorn (structure, discipline, reality) created a wave of consolidation that forever altered the financial landscape.

The second event leading up to the Cardinal Drama was the opposition between Uranus (that which changes) and Saturn (that which remains the same), an opposition which is still underway through the summer.

Over the next few weeks we’ll see the intensity begin to increase as the pure energy of life continues to accelerate.  This might feel like a carnival ride – thrilling for many, but frightening for some.  The intensity of the consciousness change that is at work here can completely transform us as individuals and as communities.  Here’s what’s coming up for the summer of 2010.

May 28 – Uranus enters Aries, instigating a change in the electromagnetic frequency that surrounds the planet (Uranus rules electromagnetic energy which is a building block of consciousness).

Because the cardinal signs initiate new activity, when planets move from a mutable sign (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) to a cardinal sign there is a sense of having completed one phase and moving into another.

June 6 – Jupiter enters Aries, followed June 8 by the exact conjunction of Jupiter to Uranus, merging the principle of expansion and confidence, optimism and righteousness (Jupiter) with the iconoclastic rebel and seeker of justice and equality (Uranus).

The combination of Jupiter and Uranus opens the mind and the sense of possibilities so that we can more easily embrace change, and this is extremely beneficial in light of the upcoming stressors between Saturn and Pluto and then next year’s square between Uranus and Pluto.

At the Summer Solstice, the Sun enters Cancer at zero degrees and forms an exact square (challenging aspect) to Jupiter and Uranus.  Pluto is tied into this aspect as well as it opposes the Solstice Sun, signifying a period of great transformation.

Just a few days later, on June 26, there is a Full Moon partial eclipse in Capricorn which is exactly conjunct Pluto and in range of a square to Jupiter and Uranus.  This is a powerful lunar event that also ties Saturn and Mercury into the Cardinal Grand Cross.

I believe that this is the event that will set the wheels into motion.  The Grand Cross is a powerful alignment that creates resistance that erupts into conflict and, ultimately, resolution.  Our resistance to change will be revealed under these influences and we will have to let go in order to ride the wave into a new future.

Complicating matters is that Uranus is stationary at the zero degree point where it is at its most emphatic.  Uranus asks us to become more authentic – to seek perfection at its most ideal, and to let go of any ideas that hold us back from achieving greater harmony with our highest purpose – living a life of pure joy with compassion and cooperation.

Meanwhile, Jupiter moves just a few degrees and then slows down in an exact square to Pluto between July 25 and August 3, fomenting rebellion and resistance to authority.  Righteousness and self-righteousness peak under this influence, enhancing the possibility of social chaos which ties right into the final Saturn/Pluto event on August 21st.

The square of Saturn and Pluto can be somewhat dark, but this is the final phase so its lessons have likely already been assimilated.  Saturn and Pluto ask: Where are the limits to our endurance – where can we no longer make adjustments and THAT’s where adjustments are necessary.  Saturn and Pluto bring the hard work that follows the expansion of Jupiter and Uranus.

These planetary cycles will be felt most deeply by those of us whose natal planets are aspected by the planetary movements in the sky.  It’s important to remember that nature strives for balance, and the only change and transformation that will occur is in areas that are out of balance.  This is true in our personal lives, and also in the world at large.  Nations and individuals who respect others and have built their world on a solid foundation will simply experience an expansion of awareness and an embrace of a variety of ideas.  Those who are living in deception and futility could be faced with challenges that will force a transformation that will ultimately lead to greater balance.

So in a nutshell, that’s my take on the Summer of Transformation.  Over the next few weeks I’ll be posting the ideas of other experts as well.

The Astrology of 2012

photo manipulation by Vandelay Design.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that popular mythology says that the Mayan long count calendar will end on December 21, 2012 and therefore the world will probably end too.

Many cultures break the aeons of time into smaller and more manageable cycles.  The ancient Hindus described these cycles as Yugas, of which there are four, each with its own qualities.  We are currently in the Kali Yuga which began somewhere around 3102 bce, and which will last for another 400,000 years or so.  The current Mayan calendar period of 5126 years, or B’ak’tun, began in 3114 bce. The synchronicity of these beginning dates is especially interesting when we consider that this is around the time of the surge of more sophisticated civilizations around the world.  But the Mayans believed there were 20 B’ak’tun cycles, so we have a ways to go before the entire cycle ends according to the Mayans.  That date is the end of the 20th B’ak’tun, which occurs on October 12, 4772.

At any rate, the 13th B’ak’tun is set to end in December of 2012 and then resets itself to the 14th B’ak’tun.  The commonly used date of December 21, corresponding to the Winter Solstice, is somewhat coincidental and depends upon the correlations used to adapt the Mayan calendar to the Western calendar.  Some scholars believe that the 13th B’ak’tun will end on December 20th and the 14th will begin on December 21.  Some New Agers want the end of the calendar to coincide 12/12/12 for the numerological effect.

I am often asked what the astrological correlations are between the Mayan calendar and our Western astrology, and the answer is truly – there are none.  While we are going to be experiencing some major cycles of change over the next few years as Uranus and Pluto face off in a square formation, that cycle is not in any kind of orb on December 21st.  The alignment of Uranus and Pluto will begin to tighten in the Spring of 2011, but by November of 2011 they will have moved apart without ever reaching the climax of the square formation. The exact Uranus/Pluto square occurs in September of 2012 and is waning by the time of the Solstice. I have certainly hypothesized that the Uranus/Pluto square could bring earth changes such as earthquakes and the eruption of volcanoes, but this has no real correlation to the Mayan calendar date of December 21, 2012.

The Solstice chart for December 21, 2012 is relatively uneventful and there are no major planetary cycles occurring at that time.

That said, there are some interesting details in the chart including a numerological correlation with the Solstice (as marked by the Sun entering the sign of Capricorn) occurring at exactly 11:11 am GMT.  11:11 is said to be an angelic frequency that opens doorways of higher consciousness although humans generally have to be at a fairly high frequency themselves to be able to really experience these subtle shifts in energetics.

The chart for the solstice includes an exact Yod (finger of Fate) involving a harmonious sextile of Saturn to Pluto that both quincunx Jupiter, making the shape of a Y with Jupiter at the apex.  The Yod in the Kaballah represents god as the father, and Jupiter is the king of the gods so there is perhaps an element of transformation (Pluto) through focus (Saturn) that challenge the ideas that establish our philosophy and understanding (Jupiter).

There are some interesting astronomical correlations to the December 21 2012 phenomenon, although some were tied to the expected peak of the solar cycle which due to the extended Solar Minimum which may still be in effect.  The Solar Minimum was expected to end in 2006 which would put the midpoint of the eleven year cycle at the 2012 point, but since we may still be in the Solar Minimum that seems a bit soon.

So relax everyone – no need to build the bunkers yet.  If you want to read more about the non-links between astrology and 2012 (thank you Chris for the links and your pointed article) read through astrologer Bruce Scofield’s collection.

Philip Sedgwick on 2012 and my thoughts on the Mayan Calendar and Age of Aquarius

Philip Sedgwick has a post on his new blog at Matrix that is chock full of interesting points to share.  Philip is an interesting astrologer – he was one of the first astrologers to work with the Galactic Center point which was so much in the news over the past few years as Pluto made a conjunction to it.  He is still exploring realms outside the boundaries of ordinary astrology, looking for ways to integrate the new Solar System into the astrological language.

Philip wrote an election blog for Huffington Post last year, and his commentary on that experience made me very glad I was picked up by Beliefnet and not, say, the New York Times which frankly was my fantasy.  It just shows that the Universe knows what’s best.  At any rate, Philip’s experience was not very enjoyable:

In honor of Mercury’s impending retrograde, allow me to back up first. Last fall I had the pleasure of writing a blog regarding election polling and the upcoming U. S. Presidential Election for the Huffington Post. My posts appeared under a subcategory entitled Huffpollstrology. But when I started writing for HuffPo, the first post was placed in the column with the standard array of mainstream bloggers. Oh my! I discovered that despite the stats about the general public loving to read sun sign columns, approximately 80% of the comments received about my first post were hostile, hateful and ignorant of the topic they condemned, which in the realm of blogging has nothing to do with anything. The ridicule came in from the obvious religious quarters, those who despise superstition and well educated and/or intelligent folks who condemned the idiocy of those who put credence into astrology. The spiteful comments continued through the tenure of my columns leading up to the election, despite the impeccable accuracy of the content. “Jeez Louise,” thought I, “Us astrologer folks better not say anythin’ silly lest we fuel the fires of speculation about our sensibilities.”

Interesting that mainstream readers are positive about sun sign astrology, which is more entertainment than astrology, and negative on real astrology, which they call “bunk.”

Phliip goes on to talk about the upcoming 2012 panic.  Will the world really end?  Where does astrology fit in?  I’m getting a lot of emails about this myself, and I’ve noticed that many people are allowing the negativity and fear that is patterned into their own belief systems to erupt at this time with this new “legitimate” impending disaster.

Evidently the Hopi prophecy of the Blue Star Kachina being the harbinger of the emergence of the Fifth World (it is the Fourth World in the Mayan calendar that ends at 2012) is being tied to Comet Holmes which supposedly will top off a 7-year healing cycle.  Philip argues that a comet is not a star, and that Comet Holmes is actually yellow but just appeared blue due to viewing filters, and it comes around every 6.9 years anyway so is hardly the harbinger of anything.

Philip agrees with other writers that the Mayan calendar doesn’t actually end, but that it rolls over and begins anew with a new Great Cycle of 5125 years.  It’s an interesting synchronicity that five Great Cycles adds up to 26,000 years, the Grand Year of the Precession of the Equinoxes marking all of the great astrological ages.

Perhaps this synchronicity is a clue that December 21, 2012 is the gateway to the Age of Aquarius, since each Great Cycle would be equal to two astrological ages. The Age of Aquarius will certainly bring in tremendous changes to our culture – but then the development of human culture has been accelerating rapidly ever since Uranus was discovered in 1783.  Nothing is the same from one day to the next!

At any rate, the previous Mayan Cycle ended 5125 years before 2012, or 3113 bce.  This is an interesting millenium because it marks the first Egyptian dynasty and the beginning of the Hebrew calendar.

Pluto teaches us to look at death not as an ending but as a new beginning.  Each day is a new beginning, and our own lives are filled with Great Years – cycles that take us from one life experience to another.  These are the Great Years that are the most important, and every day we have an opportunity to begin anew.  2012 will take care of itself – for now, as the Zen teachers say, the laundry.

Part III: The Opposition from Saturn to Uranus: 2008-2010

If you’re just finding us, catch up with Part I and Part II.

The first stage of the opposition is beginning to align at this moment, and in the US election we’re seeing a vivid portrayal of the battle between the new America (Barack Obama) and the old America (John McCain).  Saturn represents the voice of the establishment, “the way it has always been done.”  Uranus is the innovator – the unusual.  The One who does Not Belong.

Over the past couple of years astrologers have looked to this major planetary cycle for clues as to who would win the election, with divided results.  Planets give us a weather map, but they do not reveal the future.  Who will prevail in this battle?  Just because Saturn won over Uranus in Greek mythology (see Part I) doesn’t mean Saturn will always prevail.  After all, Uranus is the lanet with more astrological oomph.  In fact, the pull between Saturn and Uranus is a continuing process which begins with the radical urge of Uranus to bring change and new ideas puts pressure on Saturn to evolve and transform, resulting in tremendous resistance and fear and a longing for the past (Saturn).  When Saturn regains its foothold, the cycle begins again.

The current opposition cycle began with the conjunction of Saturn and Uranus in 1988-1989 which began in Sagittarius and moved into Capricorn.  This period witnessed the economic restructuring in the Soviet Union called perestroika which began the radical changes (Uranus) to the Soviet order (Saturn), and Soviet forces (Saturn) withdrew from Afghanistan under pressure from “freedom fighters” there (Uranus), setting the stage for the battle underway at the present time.  In Poland, the communist government (Saturn) legitimized the Solidarity trade union movement (Uranus).  Neptune became involved in that planetary system in February and March of 1989, resulting in the biggest oil (Neptune) spill in history, and a geomagnetic (Uranus) storm (Neptune) wiped out a huge power grid (Saturn), resulting in the loss of power to six million people.

The opening square occurred in 1999-2000 with Saturn in Taurus and Uranus in Aquarius.  At the time Enron traders of energy (Uranus) were circumventing established rules (Saturn) to create artificial energy shortages (Saturn again) and get rich.  The murder of young gay teen Matthew Shepard in late 1998 as the square began to form resulted in a battle in Congress over whether to include homosexuality (Uranus) in federal hate crime legislation (Saturn) which failed at that time, and Dr. Kervorkian pushed the legal envelope (Uranus) on physician assisted suicide and was found guilty (Saturn).

Now we are in the opposition phase, where Saturn and Uranus are 180 degrees apart creating a tension that requires balance and assimilation.  The opposition will “perfect” in exact alignment on November 4, Election Day in the US.  It looks right now as if Barack Obama (Uranus) will be elected president, in which case the Saturn backlash that we’re already seeing at McCain and Palin’s campaign stops will continue to heat up.  Sarah Palin’s “Joe Six Pack” and “Hockey Moms” are terrified of the change the Barack Obama represents.  He is like an alien to many who grew up in small towns with a homogeneous demographic, and for the Saturnian individual who cherishes stability and security above all else, the concept of Uranian liberation/chaos is horrifying.  On the other hand, for the Uranian individual, for whom personal liberty and social justice is paramount, the Saturnian need for control and pressure to confirm is similarly abhorrent.  This is the very battle which will take place over the next few years against the backdrop of Pluto’s entry into Capricorn and the transformation (Pluto) of social and governmental structures (Capricorn).

As an American I am rather focused on the outcome of the US election, but this planetary cycle of course will affect the entire globe.  Every European country has experienced a wave of immigration that has been integrating the culture, and there will be a greater desire for human rights (Uranus) that shake the established order.  In Britain, there are rumors of a parliamentary coup against Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and I have long thought that Pluto in Capricorn would bring a rebellion that would topple (Pluto) the monarchy (Capricorn) once and for all.

The second exact phase of the opposition cycle will occur on February 5 2009 but Saturn and Uranus will not be more than two degrees apart between November and February, so the effect will remain strong.  Events that are put into motion in early November under the first “hit” will continue to unfold over the next few months.  Most major planetary cycles have three hits, but this opposition cycle will have five phases, signaling its particular significance for permanent change.

The third phase occurs in September (15th) 2009, but a total eclipse of the Sun in August (22nd) conjunct Saturn will instigate the events of that phase of the cycle.  Retrograde Pluto will be stationary (moving very slowly)  in September and will change direction to turn direct just a few days before the exact opposition, so this period is likely to be rather intense.  Saturn and Uranus are in challenging 30 and 150 degree aspects to Neptune, which will erode any potential for understanding the nature of the events that occur at that time.  It will be important then (and don’t worry, I’ll remind you!) to remember that this is a natural evolutionary cycle that requires the letting go of the old in order to bring in something that is more true for us at that current time.

The fourth phase takes place April 26, 2010, again in exact aspect to Neptune.  By that time we likely will have integrated the lessons of the Saturn/Uranus opposition and are better prepared to take the steps necessary to move forward.  Neptune demands that we become visionaries and transcend boundaries that limit ordinary mortals, and in doing so there is sometimes a dissolving of aspects of our life that limit us (Saturn).  Challenging Neptune times require that we pursue a disciplined (Saturn) spiritual practice (Neptune) that enables us to open up our eyes and our mind to a completely new way of being alive on the planet (Uranus).   This third and fourth phase will be extremely exciting for those who are able to let go and enjoy the roller coaster ride, and less comfortable for those of us with more fixed natures (like me) who have a high need for control and safety.

The fifth phase on July 26, 2010 occurs at -0- degrees Aries and Libra, within range of a square to Pluto at 3 degrees Capricorn.  Normally the late stage of a multi-phase planetary cycle is less difficult than the earlier stages, because we have usually assimilated the necessary planetary energies by that time.  The addition of the square from Pluto will create greater urgency and pressure for conflict and war in order to achieve the goal of change and transformation (Pluto)  into a new way (Uranus)  of living as societies (Saturn) in the world.

This fifth phase of the Saturn/Uranus cycle is actually the harbinger of two Pluto cycles: the square from Saturn to Pluto (visiting three times between November 2009 and August 2010) and the square from Uranus to Pluto which will come within winking distance in July 11 but not perfect until June 2012, continuing through 2015.  I’ll cover these other major cycles in separate articles, but you can see that what happens during the Saturn/Uranus opposition will set the stage for the next eight years.

Knowing this information is not useful if we use it to scare ourselves to death.  It’s important to view these cycles within a framework of faith and understanding so that we can use the information to our advantage and not become overwhelmed by it.  This is a time to examine our own lives and see where our life is not authentic, and where we are not being true to ourselves (Uranus) and where changes need to be made to the structure of our lives (Saturn) as a result.  This is the perfect time to cultivate faith in the natural flow of life and to increase our understanding that we are spiritual beings having a human experience.  It’s a wonderful time to learn to let go when all of the doors to our desires are closing, but to remain strong in our intention to manifest a life of beauty and adventure that resonates with our deepest Self.  This after all is the ultimate challenge of any planetary cycle.

Sunday Inspiration: The Age of Purification.

The Saturn/Uranus series will conclude tomorrow.

The Hopi Indians have long understood the need for an Age of Purification to return our world to a more natural state. As we watch the Zeitgeist movies and contemplate the upcoming

planetary cycles that will carry us into the Times of Change, these words, attributed to the Hopi Elders in Oraibi Arizona but not confirmed by the leaders of the Hopi Nation, have a comforting prescience.

There is a river flowing now very fast.
It is so great and swift that there are those who will be afraid.
They will try to hold on to the shore.
They will feel that they are being torn part and will suffer greatly.
Know that the river has its destination.
The elders say we must let go of the shore, push off into the middle of the river, keep your eyes open and our heads above the water.
And I say “See who is in there with you and celebrate!”
At this time in history we are to take othing personally, least of all ourselves.
For the moment that we do, our spiritual growth and journey comes to a halt.
The time of the lone wolf is over.
Gather yourselves!
Banish the word “struggle” from your vocabulary.
All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner and in celebration.
WE ARE THE ONES
WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR.
