Will religion survive the Aquarian Age?

In Sweden a new religion called “kopimism” is dedicated to the right to share files freely across the internet. This religion has been officially recognized by the Swedish government as a lawful religion. Its sacred symbols are ctrl-c and ctrl-v (the PC keyboard shortcuts for copy and paste). This is not a joke.

For the past 2150 years or so we have been in the Age of Pisces (see my earlier article for the delineations between the Great Ages and a discussion of when the Aquarian Age begins.) The sign of Pisces is ruled by both Jupiter, its traditional ruler, and Neptune, its modern ruler. Both Jupiter and Neptune are connected to the spiritual life, but where Neptune deals with matters of the Spirit in which worldly issues are transcended for the sake of an inner experience, Jupiter seeks meaning in life through building a theological construct and tenets that give us comfort and a sense of peace. Any system of beliefs is a Jupiterian experience, and any divine or creative experience is an experience of Neptune. So the Piscean Age, which began sometime around the beginning of the common era (0 c.e.) has been the age of religious and spiritual experience.

It would be a mistake to say that Pisces itself is connected with religion specifically, because there is this image with Pisces of two fish swimming in opposite directions. At its best, Pisces works to integrate the spiritual life (Neptune) with the intellectual beliefs of Jupiter and in doing so one often obscures the other. The Piscean Age oversaw the greatest expansion of one religion that the world had ever known; it has also been the age of ignorance and deception (negative Pisces traits), during which religious fervor obscured a 2,000 year history of war and abuse by various religious establishments around the world. It’s no accident on an esoteric level that Christianity is symbolized by the Ichthys (fish) which was used as a secret symbol by early Christians to mark their meeting places. The concept of fish factors prominently in the stories of Christianity, with Jesus as a fisher of men, converting loaves into fish, teaching men to fish.

But the Piscean Age also brought about a surge of mysticism and spiritual exploration of various kinds. Every major religion had its mystical branches, even the Roman Church in which such practices were banned in public but practiced in secret. The idea that one can have a direct individual connection to the Divine violates the basic laws of the Church which required the intercession of the priestly class.

The Aquarian age is likely to be a very different story. Aquarius also has a double rulership: Saturn is the traditional ruler and Uranus is the modern ruler, and never two did two different planets share a bed. Saturn presides over structure and form and the status quo, and Uranus is dedicated to shattering the status quo and creating a New World Order where everyone is free and rational. Because Saturn tends to be rather rigid it is often associated with the rigidity of religious doctrine, but Uranus is the planet of science and reason, neither of which are typically very supportive of religion.

There is no doubt that the presence of religion in our lives is changing, especially in the United States which, with Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius rising and Jupiter conjunct the Sun in the national chart is exceptionally tied to religious dogma. A recent Pew study found that 28% of all adults surveyed had left the religion of their childhood, a rather astonishing number.

As we continue to move into the Aquarian Age, the force of “reason” is likely to dominate over spiritual experience, bringing another set of dangers. The idea that in the Age of Aquarius “peace and love will rule the sky” promulgated by the musical Hair is a fantasy. If you ever read Animal Farm by George Orwell, a book about the dangers of communism where all are equal and none are free, you’ve seen the dark side of Aquarius in action.

Over the past 50 years or so since we’ve been in the transitional phase between the Piscean and Aquarian ages there has been a surge of new religions. Neopagan and WIccan cults have gone almost mainstream. The study of yoga has brought eastern religions into western thought. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world, followed closely by Bahai and Sikhism.

Will this proliferation of new religion and faiths mean an increase of peace and understanding, or continued religious warfare? The choice is up to humanity and only time will tell.

The late Sathya Sai Baba on the 2012 bandwagon

With all due respect to the late Sathya Sai Baba, who was a controversial guru beloved by many before he died this spring, this recent interview with him shows an exceptional ignorance about the cycles (and lack of them) that are tied into the 2012 phenomenon. (For more details about 2012 please see this article.)

In this interview Sai Baba is quoted:

Well, in one way there are several prophecies that signal this date like a term or important conclusion in the history of humanity, but the most significant is the end of the Mayan calendar, which prophecy has been interpreted in different ways. The most negative ones think that during this year the world will end, but it will not be like that, it is known that during that year a new era will start, the Age of Aquarius.

This has to do with the rotation of the whole solar system (solar cycle) that goes passing through the different eras each one of them lasts 5125 years. The era in which we now are, called the Age of Pisces, started on the year 3113 B.C. and ends on 2012.

This is all kinds of incorrect. The Great Ages last approximately 2160 years each (with Great Wheel of Ages taking approximately 25,920 years to complete. We do not know exactly when the Aquarian Age begins but none of the theories use 2012 as the transition point.

The 5125 year cycle is the Mayan Long Count cycle, but that cycle is completely unrelated to the transition into the Age of Aquarius after 2160 years in the Piscean Age.

I report this not to be critical, but to continue to try to clear up so much of the confusion and illusion (Neptune in Pisces anyone?) over the whole 2012 phenomenon. I personally believe that we are in the transition from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age – if you figure a 5% orb of influence for the Great Ages just as we use for planetary transits, that gives us a buffer zone of 108 years as we move into the Aquarian Age. So I feel that we are beginning to experience the mutation and personal changes to help facilitate that evolution, especially in the children that are coming into the world now.

Still, maybe it’s just my Sun/Saturn conjunction but I feel it’s important to try to separate fact from fiction where 2012 is concerned.

Androgyny and the Aquarian Age

I have always found it interesting that the worldly definition of “Uranian” according to Wikipedia is

Uranian is a nineteenth century term that referred to a person of a third sex — originally, someone with “a female psyche in a male body” who is sexually attracted to men, and later extended to cover homosexual gender variant females, and a number of other sexual types.

Delving a little deeper, I find that the origin of this association with the word Uranian with the “third sex” originated with a German scholar named Karl Heinrich Ulrich who was what we could today call transgender, meaning he identified as a woman in a man’s body. The term Uranian was picked up by Victorian writers such as Oscar Wilde, who wrote: “”To have altered my life would have been to have admitted that Uranian love is ignoble. I hold it to be noble – more noble than other forms.” (Ulrich’s chart shows Venus opposite Uranus, and Uranus squares the Moon in Wilde’s chart.)

As we transition into the Aquarian age, it’s not surprising that gender roles are blurring and homosexuality is becoming more openly accepted. Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, the planet that inspires us to live a life that is authentically true to ourselves as possible. Uranus governs radical behavior and rebellion against the status quo, and this includes greater acceptance of lifestyles that don’t fit into the rigid social norms that fall under Saturn’s domain. With Pluto, lord of destruction and regeneration, traveling through Capricorn, Saturn’s sign, these rigid social structures (Capricorn) are being pummeled and demolished.

As an astrologer I use the term “Uranian” to describe any person or trait that reflects this desire to move past old ways of thinking and manifest an authenticity in one’s thoughts and behavior patterns and this goes far beyond gender issues. But a strong Uranus in a birthchart does tend to indicate a person whose gender identification is less than rigid although this doesn’t always manifest as homosexuality.

Androgyny is nothing new in the rock world (David Bowie, Marilyn Manson), but a new singer has taken gender neutrality to a new level. Justin Vivian Bond (Moon square Uranus) is not only trangendered, but uses the neutral pronoun of “v” to describe “vself” and says: ”I like my penis, and I am keeping it, but I am creating a transbody — a physical record on my body and a medical record that I am a transgendered person.”

Our local alternative paper reviewed a recent performance by Justin Vivian Bond, saying:

The gender-ambiguous voice is unrepentant, a queer mixture of the sexes, “monstrous.” Monster comes from the Latin monstrum, meaning an aberration within the natural order. In other words, the so-called monster defies categories. Not surprisingly, what we call monsters are often only reflections of our most profound terrors and desires. Less obviously, monsters reveal the fact that we each contain something of the other; elements of “you” lurk within “me.”

And with the hermaphroditic, we are reminded that even in our differences, we all possess male and female attributes. Writing about Michael Jackson’s violation of the rules governing racial and gender identity, James Baldwin offered that perhaps what is truly monstrous is not ambiguity but the fight against androgyny in an effort to reinforce conventional gender roles. What is terrible is a restrictive gender regime; a terrorist is someone who polices the borders of gender.

This is just the beginning, and the more radical societal changes become the stronger the backlash of conservatives who fear this kind of extreme alteration to their world view. This is part of what we will be seeing over the next four years as Uranus squares Pluto and takes us deeper into the Aquarian Age.

Part II: Neptune in Pisces

Here is Part I in case you missed it yesterday.

This time around, Neptune will be in Pisces until August 4 2011 when it will retrograde back into Aquarius until February 3 2012 at which time it will move fully into Pisces and remain there until 2025.

The transit of Neptune in Pisces this time around once again (as it did in 1848-1852) coincides with a strong aspect between Uranus and Pluto that inspires revolution and radical change and the destruction of the status quo. The Neptunian influence can cast a spell of delusion over the fever for revolution, or it can inspire us to greater love and compassion for all of humanity.

As we move from the age of Pisces into the age of Aquarius, humans are waking up out of their sleep of delusion that religious dogma has cast over the world during the past 2000 years of Piscean mystery. Aquarius is more concerned with the rights of the individual, although it can be brutal in its efforts to accomplish social equality as we have seen throughout history in events such as the French Revolution.

As we stand at the doorway of the Age of Aquarius, this passage of Neptune in Pisces represents a completion of sorts – a final test of our ability to rise above the urge to lose ourselves in unconscious urges and escapist behavior and instead achieve a higher level of conscious awareness in the elevation of our ideals and dreams.

For the first eight years that Neptune moves through Pisces Chiron will be there as well. In its role as the Wounded Healer (or as I prefer to call it, the Soul Healer) Chiron reveals any area in our world which requires release and healing so that a greater wisdom may emerge. We are likely to see a more advanced wave of “designer” drugs – pharmaceuticals designed to evoke certain experiences. The legalization of marijuana for medical use, and its adoption by pharmaceutical companies for profit, is likely to come rather quickly.

The ways in which we entertain ourselves are certain to change as well. Games such as the Wii will transform into more realistic virtual worlds, and televisions will go beyond 3-dimensional to provide an experience that intensifies all of the senses beyond what the human experience can offer on its own. This is likely to result in a new type of addiction as the more subtle forms of experience of the natural world takes a back seat. We are already seeing a form of this in the realm of sexuality, where the wide availability of pornography on the Web is creating sexual dysfunction in a growing number of men for whom a sexual experience with a live person cannot compete with the intensity of the pornographic experience.

Astrology Liz Greene calls Pisces the “Celestial Dustbin,” because it is the sum total of all of our experiences. In Pisces we long to return to the source – to merge with a greater experience that goes beyond the limits of our senses. The collective consciousness, or unconsciousness as the case may be, is more readily accessible under the Piscean influence and with Neptune traveling through Pisces life could become much more confusing as the veils between the realms of experience become thinner and easier to traverse.

Neptune wants to inspire us to transcend ordinary reality, and its ideal expression is to seek this transcendence through a connection with the divine. This is the source of the creative fire, as we channel any type of creative output through our more limited conscious experience. As Neptune travels through Pisces we have an opportunity to more easily stretch ourselves beyond the limits of our intuition and conscious awareness. Our capacity for compassion for the suffering can grow and our hearts can open. If we ground ourselves in a spiritual practice we will be able to take advantage of the opening flower of divine wisdom that will be available to us, especially during the period in which Chiron is also in Pisces.

With Uranus squaring Pluto over the next four years, revolution and radical changes in the global landscape will be a major part of our experience. Neptune in Pisces can inspire us to either escape from the difficult intensity into new heights of avoidance, or to seek the higher path of elevated consciousness that can help us to create real change and transformation. Neptune in Pisces offers opportunities for unparalleled creativity and imagination which can combine with the powerful Uranian influence for invention in ways that can create amazing things for the world of the future.

The symbol for Pisces is two fish swimming in opposite directions. Pisces is said to be the sign of the saint and the sinner, the priest and the addict. It is our choice, as it always is, whether we will take the easy road of sleep and unconsciousness, or remain awake and utilize the powerful energy of change that is coming.

Autism: A disorder or new breed of transhuman?

For some time know I have suspected that the growing incidence of autism spectrum disorders is evidence that the human species is mutating in preparation for the Aquarian Age. Aquarius is the sign of innovation and radical departure from the known and the ordinary, and it also represents the realm of reason and the transpersonal. Mr. Spock in Star Trek was the quintessential Aquarian personality, and President Obama, with Aquarius rising, is known for his Spock-like detachment and reason. (Something that’s getting him in trouble now, but that’s another story…)

Now scientists have discovered certain genetic traits in autistic people that differ from genetic activity in people without autism.

The scientists compared the DNA of almost 1,000 people with autism with DNA from almost 1,300 people who do not have the disorder. The findings, described Wednesday in the journal Nature, show that the collection of developmental disabilities known as autism spectrum disorder involve dozens of genes and numerous combinations of rare mutations – so many that patients may each have a unique form [emphasis added].

I’ve written quite a bit about autism over the years and this concept of human mutation, and it appears that science is now catching up with speculative research. Many people with autism have exceptional skills (rent the recent HBO film on Temple Grandin, it’s quite amazing), as in the case of autistic savants.

This is not universally true, of course, and the lives of autistic children or adults and their families are often filled with stress and despair. But whether humans are mutating as the result of environmental forces or to adapt to a New Age of human experience, treating this sort of transformation as a disorder does little to help the adaptation process.

Futurists have been talking about a time in the not-too-distant future when technological intelligence will surpass human intelligence, and there will be a melding of man and machine. If we can adopt a new way of looking at autism, and see this as a transformational development in human history rather than a disorder, perhaps the process can be made a little less painful and even a bit exciting as we head into a Brave New World. Because really, we don’t have a choice.

Saturn in Libra 2009-2012

Saturn will be entering the sign of Libra on October 29, leaving the sign of Virgo where it has spent the last two years and some months challenging all of our conventional ideas about health and healing and ensuring that we embrace the Virgoan virtues of modesty, thrift and caution.

Libra is the sign of relationships and balance between two polarities. In Libra we understand the yin and the yang, the plus and the minus, the inner and the outer, and recognize that both ends of the polarities are valid.

Saturn is said to be exalted in Libra, but this does NOT mean that everything Saturn touches while in Libra is hunky-dory. Saturn’s crochety penchant for discipline and commitment is best expressed through the harmony of relationships, and the desire of Libra for balance and harmony helps to bring out the best of Saturn. However, Saturn has a tendency to create tests and challenges in any sign that he passes through, and he particularly dislikes an over-romanticized and impractical view of the world. In any area of life or the political spectrum where strange bedfellows have been made, Saturn is likely to shine his microscope and reveal the chinks in the construction of our sandcastles.

Saturn in Libra also brings a desire for charm and a harmonious approach to life as we saw when Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent Jimmy Carter in the 1980 elections just after Saturn had entered Libra. Saturn desires to build structures, and in Libra Saturn wants structures that will build relationships and alliances. But Libra can also sometimes be superficial, with its love of beauty and an appearance of harmony. A president like Reagan was made for Saturn in Libra and his charm and good looks gave the impression that John Wayne was in the White House. It was arguably a presidency that was more style than substance. (Reagan had Libra on the Midheaven, in case you were wondering).

Saturn rules diamonds, the brilliant jewel that is created when a lump of coal is put under tremendous pressure. This is the perfect metaphor for the way that Saturn works in our lives, and whether we end up with coal or a diamond really depends on us and how well we manage the tests that Saturn puts in our path. Saturn cycles can be depressing and burdensome, or they can be times of material success and wealth.

As I mentioned recently, Saturn’s passage through Libra coincided with one of the worst recessions in the 20th century in 1982. Saturn conjoined Pluto at the time, and during Saturn’s passage through Libra we will see Saturn forming a square to Pluto. Libra is ruled by Venus, and Venus is involved in the attraction and creation of wealth so Saturn’s passage through Libra can create tests and challenges in the realm of prosperity and force us to evaluate (Saturn) what we value (Libra).

While Saturn is passing through Libra it will be evaluating our progress in all Venus-related issues. Much attention is given to Libra and Venus’s rulership over relationships, and all kinds of alliances will be both forged and tested under the influence of Saturn in Libra. Other aspects of Libra include beauty, and with Saturn (aging) in Libra (beauty), we may find ourselves faced with some difficult facts about the processes that we use to stave off the aging process. We could also embrace the aging process and discover the beauty that lies in the growing strength and stability that we experience with age, a true Saturn in Libra achievement!

The forging of alliances requires the kind of balance and integration for which Libra is well-known, and Saturn’s travel through Libra will bring with it a requirement that we consider all sides of a question in order to bring about a truly harmonious result. Libra is the consummate diplomat and negotiator, and during this period great things are possible in the realm of peace negotiations. Saturn in Libra also tests our ability to make commitments. The generation with Saturn in Libra has exemplified this challenge as Saturn in any sign shows where we feel insecure and where we need to compensate.

Saturn in Libra is best described by the Justice card in the Rider-Waite Tarot deck: Armed with the scales of justice in one hand and the sword of power in the other. With Saturn in Libra, justice and balance are required and they may come with a price.

In any matter with which Saturn becomes involved, he does not give success easily. It must be earned, and the Saturnian qualities of discipline, hard work and achievement must be utilized. This will be particularly important when Saturn and Pluto face off in a square formation. The first phase of that cycle occurs in November of this year and will be in range through February of 2010 . As I have said often in these pages, this will likely instigate another crisis of confidence that challenge the recovery of the global economic systems.

Saturn then retrogrades back into Virgo in March where it will clean up the last of its Virgo business, such as health care reform and completing the process of instilling the values of thrift and economic conservatism.

We are likely to see a resurgence of optimism next spring when Jupiter (abundance and expansion) conjoins Uranus (radical change from the status quo) and I’ll be writing more about that phase of the cycle as we get closer to the time.

The human brain and robotics: One step closer to Transhumanism

Researchers from Honda Motor Company have developed a new way to analyze human brain patterns and translate them into commands for their new generation of robots. Several years ago I predicted that in the Age of Aquarius, at which we are on the brink, the distinction between the human brain and technology will be blurred, and computers will plug into our brains directly and pick up our thoughts.

Other research is beginning to show that the use of technology is changing the human brain as we adapt to the new demands of our changing world. As I wrote in this earlier article:

Since Neptune entered Aquarius in the late 1990s following the Uranus/Neptune conjunction of 1992-1995, the boundaries between humans and technology (Uranus/Aquarius) have blurred (Neptune). When Uranus entered Pisces in 2003, instigating the mutual reception that has been in place since then with Uranus in the sign ruled by Neptune and Neptune in the sign ruled by Uranus, this blurring has increased exponentially. So really, for the last 15 years we have been wandering into uncharted technological territory. This period saw the explosion of the internet and the wiring of nearly every human being on the planet into the World Wide Web.

This hard-wiring of technology into our brains comes easier for those of us who are already rather electric in nature, with Uranus strong in our charts. For others it’s a more difficult

Philip Sedgwick on 2012 and my thoughts on the Mayan Calendar and Age of Aquarius

Philip Sedgwick has a post on his new blog at Matrix that is chock full of interesting points to share. Philip is an interesting astrologer – he was one of the first astrologers to work with the Galactic Center point which was so much in the news over the past few years as Pluto made a conjunction to it. He is still exploring realms outside the boundaries of ordinary astrology, looking for ways to integrate the new Solar System into the astrological language.

Philip wrote an election blog for Huffington Post last year, and his commentary on that experience made me very glad I was picked up by Beliefnet and not, say, the New York Times which frankly was my fantasy. It just shows that the Universe knows what’s best. At any rate, Philip’s experience was not very enjoyable:

In honor of Mercury’s impending retrograde, allow me to back up first. Last fall I had the pleasure of writing a blog regarding election polling and the upcoming U. S. Presidential Election for the Huffington Post. My posts appeared under a subcategory entitled Huffpollstrology. But when I started writing for HuffPo, the first post was placed in the column with the standard array of mainstream bloggers. Oh my! I discovered that despite the stats about the general public loving to read sun sign columns, approximately 80% of the comments received about my first post were hostile, hateful and ignorant of the topic they condemned, which in the realm of blogging has nothing to do with anything. The ridicule came in from the obvious religious quarters, those who despise superstition and well educated and/or intelligent folks who condemned the idiocy of those who put credence into astrology. The spiteful comments continued through the tenure of my columns leading up to the election, despite the impeccable accuracy of the content. “Jeez Louise,” thought I, “Us astrologer folks better not say anythin’ silly lest we fuel the fires of speculation about our sensibilities.”

Interesting that mainstream readers are positive about sun sign astrology, which is more entertainment than astrology, and negative on real astrology, which they call “bunk.”

Phliip goes on to talk about the upcoming 2012 panic. Will the world really end? Where does astrology fit in? I’m getting a lot of emails about this myself, and I’ve noticed that many people are allowing the negativity and fear that is patterned into their own belief systems to erupt at this time with this new “legitimate” impending disaster.

Evidently the Hopi prophecy of the Blue Star Kachina being the harbinger of the emergence of the Fifth World (it is the Fourth World in the Mayan calendar that ends at 2012) is being tied to Comet Holmes which supposedly will top off a 7-year healing cycle. Philip argues that a comet is not a star, and that Comet Holmes is actually yellow but just appeared blue due to viewing filters, and it comes around every 6.9 years anyway so is hardly the harbinger of anything.

Philip agrees with other writers that the Mayan calendar doesn’t actually end, but that it rolls over and begins anew with a new Great Cycle of 5125 years. It’s an interesting synchronicity that five Great Cycles adds up to 26,000 years, the Grand Year of the Precession of the Equinoxes marking all of the great astrological ages.

Perhaps this synchronicity is a clue that December 21, 2012 is the gateway to the Age of Aquarius, since each Great Cycle would be equal to two astrological ages. The Age of Aquarius will certainly bring in tremendous changes to our culture – but then the development of human culture has been accelerating rapidly ever since Uranus was discovered in 1783. Nothing is the same from one day to the next!

At any rate, the previous Mayan Cycle ended 5125 years before 2012, or 3113 bce. This is an interesting millenium because it marks the first Egyptian dynasty and the beginning of the Hebrew calendar.

Pluto teaches us to look at death not as an ending but as a new beginning. Each day is a new beginning, and our own lives are filled with Great Years – cycles that take us from one life experience to another. These are the Great Years that are the most important, and every day we have an opportunity to begin anew. 2012 will take care of itself – for now, as the Zen teachers say, the laundry.

Transhumanism and the Age of Aquarius

Chiron is in Aquarius, Neptune is in Aquarius with Uranus, ruler of Aquarius, in Pisces, ruler of Neptune, and we are at the dawn of the Aquarian Age. Aquarius is the innovator – the transpersonal human. Transhumanists seek the ultimate perfection of the human being as beyond the confines of the laws of nature, “Combining artificial intelligence with interface technology, molecular nanotechnology, extension of human life span, genetic enhancing of human mental and physical capacities, combating diseases and slowing down the process of aging, and exercising control over desires, moods, and mental states.”

The most radical aspect of transhumanism is the scenario that humans will be able to transport the content of their brains, their minds, to a non-biological entity and thereby achieve immortality. Kurzweil and other transhumanist visionaries imagine a “brain-porting scenario” that will involve “scanning a human brain capturing all of the salient details.” This will entail reinstantiating the brain’s state in a different – most likely much more powerful – computational substrate. According to [Raymond] Kurzweil this will be a feasible procedure and will happen mostly likely around the late 2030s. In this scenario “we will continue to have human bodies, but they will become morphable projections of our intelligence.” Such “software-based humans,” he predicts, “will be vastly extended beyond the severe limitations of humans as we know them today. They will live out on the Web, projecting bodies whenever they need or want them, including virtual bodies in diverse realms of virtual reality, holographically projected bodies, foglet-projected bodies, and physical bodies comprising nanobot swarms and other forms of nanotechnology.” For Kurzweil this is a form of immortality, although he concedes that the data and information do not last forever; the longevity of information depends on its relevance, utility, and accessibility.

Mr. Spock in the Star Trek series was perhaps one of the original transhumanists and an excellent example of what happens when the famous Spock logic which symbolizes the rationality of Aquarius goes to an extreme. I watched only a portion of the video below, but I can tell it’s going to be VERY interesting and something we’ll be seeing a lot more of as we get closer to the Aquarian edge. Earlier this year, the head of the Independent Schools Council in Britain said that within 30 years children would be learning by downloading information directly into their head. An article I wrote back in February of 2007 makes the case for the Age of Aquarius transition around the year 2600. When you have a 2600 year cycle, the orb of influence is fairly large, perhaps 500 years or so. This earlier article closed with these comments which I’d like to repeat here:

In the best of all possible worlds, humans could evolve during this phase into enlightened beings, able to link the best of science with the best of spirit in a Utopian paradise of freedom and justice for everyone. Or will we face another future involving the worst of the Aquarian dynamic akin to a science fiction film: a fiercely rational and scientific future that requires perfection, using technology to create perfect humans through cloning and control of the masses via genetically manipulated food and computerized thought police? Like the Terminator and Matrix movies, will machines (technology) take over?

Shall we file this under Chiron conjunct Neptune in Aquarius, where the boundaries between technology (Aquarius) and the human mind/body connection (Chiron) are blurred beyond distinction? And the mutual reception between Uranus in Pisces and Neptune (ruler of Pischttp://astrodynamics.net/astrologicalmusings/wp-admin/post-new.php?unfoldmenu=1es) in Aquarius (ruled by Uranus)? The boundaries between technology and humanity continue to dissolve in a very Neptunian/Piscean way.

The Army has given a team of University of California researchers a $4 million grant to

study the foundations of “synthetic telepathy.” But unlike old-school mind-melds, this seemingly psychic communication would be computer-mediated. . . .

All across the military, there’s interest in translating thoughts into computer code, and vice versa. Darpa-funded researchers have taught monkeys how to control robotic limbs with their thoughts. Defense contractor Northrop Grumman is building binoculars that tap the unconscious mind. Honeywell has built a system that monitors pre-conscious nueral firings, to help pick out targets in satellite imagery. The JASONs, the Pentagon’s premiere scientific advisory board, has warned of the dangers of enemies

implanted with brain-computer interfaces. And the Defense Intelligence Agency just released a report, saying the military needs to spend more on neuroscience – up to and including “mak[ing] the enemy obey our commands.”

Ever since Uranus was discovered in the late 1700s, its influence has been transforming our technological development. As we leave the age of Pisces and move into the Aquarian age, humans and machines are likely to be every more interdependent.
