Aquarius New Moon, February 10, 2013

Aquarius New Moonart by Kagaya.  The Moon is New in Aquarius today, offering up an opportunity to surrender all of the trappings of personality that culminated at the Leo Full Moon two weeks ago and opening up to a more universal perspective.

At the New Moon the energies of the Sun and Moon are fused, linking the solar conscious ego to the instinctive lunar heart of the soul. Conscious and unconscious, exterior and interior – there is a fusion here that provides us with an opportunity for a new beginning in the sign in which the lunation falls.

This New Moon is particularly powerful because of an exact square between the Sun and Moon to the North Node which makes this a bit like an eclipse. The lunar nodes are like signposts to destiny – they suggest events that are fated and point the direction in which our soul needs to travel. When a lunation is in a tight alignment to the nodes it signifies a pivotal point in our life so attention should be paid to any signals that are received at this time.

Aquarius is the inventor, the humanitarian and the scientist.  There is a cold idealism to Aquarius which enables us to look past our individual desires and needs to see the brilliant potential of a broader view. This is not a time when feelings and emotions will be honored – instead the higher mind takes the forefront of human experience.

A challenging square from Mars to Jupiter culminates at the New Moon, activating both planets to greater expression. This is a time of high energy, in which our passions (Mars) are given free rein (Jupiter) and we are energized by the imaginative force of Mars in Pisces.

The Aquarius New Moon is all about awakening to new realities – letting go of outmoded ideas and philosophies that no longer serve us so that we can gain new understanding and move into a different reality that is more true than our previous one. A conjunction of Mercury to Chiron during the New Moon suggests that we may be more prone to mental exhaustion at this time unless we take care to find rest and rejuvenation as a part of this major restructuring of our energetic pathways.

A square from Venus to Saturn during the New Moon peaks on the 11th and will likely make it somewhat difficult to connect with others during this experience.  There is a desire to connect, but the actual work of finding common ground is more difficult. This is a good time for solitude and inner exploration, or else working on a group level rather than in a one-on-one situation where intimacy is required.

Aquarius opens the doorway to intuition and insight, but this may require some attention and focus on our part.  Quieting the chatter of the lower mind can aid in this process as we allow the New Moon to wash away the past and encourage us to begin anew.

New Moon in Aquarius, January 22-23, 2012

Aquarius New Moon 2012The Sun and the Moon will unite in Aquarius at 2:39 am on January 23rd (Eastern) or 7:39 am GMT.  We call this the New Moon but it is technically the “dark” of the Moon – not even a sliver of the lunar light is reflected by the Sun.

The New Moon marks the beginning of the new lunar cycle, and it provides an energetic boost to us as well.  Each month we have a New Moon in a different sign, and the New Moon falls in a different house in our natal chart.  This offers us an opportunity to begin anew with a fresh slate and a clean vision.

The symbol for Aquarius is called the “Water Bearer” – Aquarius carries the emotional realm (signified by water) into the realm of the practical.  The traditional ruler of Aquarius is Saturn, after all, and although we modern folks tend to focus primarily on the modern aspect of Aquarius as the eccentric (the gift of Uranus, its modern ruler) Aquarius is also the scientist and the innovative technician, both Saturnian models.

This New Moon is highlighted by Mars, which has slowed down to a station and turns retrograde just after the Sun and Moon conjoin in the New Moon.  When a planet is stationary its influence becomes more powerful, and even now Mars has slowed to a crawl and we are seeing reversals and surprises reflected in the world around us.  (See this article for more about  Mars retrograde.)

Mercury is in a harmonious trine to Mars on the day of the New Moon which will help the mind accelerate to keep up with Mars activity, and that will help us to channel the high energy that Mars will be beaming on us.

The Aquarius New Moon on the 23rd contains that beam of energy, and is focused on creative originality and new beginnings. Again we have a “double whammy” because the Aquarius Moon and Sun harmonize with Uranus, the modern ruler of Aquarius. Uranus inspires radical change to the status quo, and urges us to innovate our lives with new ways of thinking and ideas that seem to come out of nowhere.

We also have a square from Jupiter to the Sun and Jupiter now squares the Moon as well so there is some frustration as the our confidence expands and the soul yearns to find its highest expression in a world which is limited.  In addition, Saturn is within range of a square to the New Moon and seeks to cancel out Jupiter’s confidence with a healthy dose of self-doubt. A strong Jupiter influence can sometimes cause us to respond with a lack of sense, especially if we are more impulsive by nature and Saturn’s strong presence in this dynamic will almost ensure that this occurs if we fail to consider the practical implications of all that we do now.

Aquarius is all about change, and with so much Jupiterian and Uranian energy combining with the assertive strength of Mars right now, change is just about assured.  As always, we have a choice: we can either go willingly and trust the Universe to bring our lives into greater balance, or we can try to resist and hold on to the aspects of our lives which we know in our hearts won’t fit the new reality of our changing lives.

Aquarius teaches that change and innovation doesn’t have to be frightening – that transformation and personal growth fulfill our soul’s longing for purpose and connection to our higher selves and a life that is far beyond what we can conceive of today.

New Moon in Aquarius today!

Aquarius New MoonCrescent Moon art by Carl Homstad.

This has been an exciting astrological week, with Mercury having entered Aquarius on the 10th and Venus leaving Aquarius for Pisces. While Mercury is in Aquarius (for the rest of the month) the mind (Mercury) is full of new ideas and brilliant new discoveries, while Venus turns her attention from the realm of reason to the world of Spirit and flow. Venus in Pisces brings us additional creativity which is encouraged by the Aquarian inventiveness of the mind (Mercury).

That inventiveness begins to take form on the 12th when Mercury forms a harmonious trine to Saturn, stabilizing the mental process and encouraging avenues of expression in which something practical is created. This stability is threatened a bit the following day with a stressful opposition from Mercury to Mars (aggression) and the Aquarian New Moon

New Moons are times of new beginnings, when the solar principle of consciousness and ego development (Sun) conjoins the lunar instinctive principle governing that which is more hidden (Moon). This New Moon is in Aquarius and aligns within a degree with Chiron and Neptune, so the Sun, Moon, Chiron and Neptune are all powerfully aligned as a tremendous force for healing and integration on a soul level. With the energy of this New Moon it’s time to integrate all of the lessons of emotional balance that Chiron and Neptune have been teaching since February of 2009 when they first aligned, and move forward in a completely new direction. This visionary Aquarian influence is all about getting un-stuck and using the power of the mind and reason to move us out of dead areas of our lives and into new beginnings.

This New Moon also includes a harmonious sextile from Venus (relating) to Pluto (transformation) that helps us to get real in all of our dealing with others, and another pleasant sextile from Mars (assertiveness) to Saturn (discipline) which helps us to create a solid plan in our life to help us to move forward. These two influences culminate on the 15th, followed by the exact conjunction of Chiron and Neptune along with a fusing of Venus to Jupiter that showers good fortune and the ability to recognize it.

There’s a lot of good juju in this new moon!  All we have to do is take advantage of it.

Bill Clinton’s heart ailment: Chiron and the Sun

Bill Clinton underwent an angioplasty yesterday to open a clogged heart artery after experiencing chest pains.  Doctors say he is recovering normally and should be able to renew his normal activities soon.

However, I have some concerns about the health of the former president.  Bill Clinton has the Sun in Leo, the sign of development and expression of the Self, and he has Libra rising which is often called the Peacemaker.  Clinton can be quite charming with four planets in Libra plus Chiron, but he also has a rather nasty conjunction of Mars and Neptune sitting right on the ascendant which I wrote about two years ago.

The Sun in the birthchart represents the physical heart, and stressful aspects to the Sun can sometimes bring on heart ailments that then disappear after the planetary cycle is over.  When Saturn squared Clinton’s progressed Sun in late August/September of 2004, he underwent open heart surgery and has been free from problems until now.

At the moment, the combination of Chiron and Neptune, which have been conjunct in the sky for the past year or so and will continue to travel within three degrees of each other throughout the year, are now in an exact opposition (180 degrees) from Clinton’s Sun.  This is a stressful aspect that can bring about the need for emotional healing as well as physical healing.  The conjunction of Chiron and Neptune has been a rather intense experience for many people (you can read more about that planetary combination here) over the past year but now it will hit Clinton particularly hard.

Chiron’s role as the “Wounded Healer” facilitates the release of old psychic and emotional wounds so that we can become more fully healed.  We all walk around with old buried emotional issues that we don’t want to deal with, because we naturally move towards pleasure and away from pain.  Chiron cycles often bring up those buried wounds so that they can be experienced and then released, freeing us through greater self-awareness.  If we are unable or unwilling to face those old wounds as they are revealed to us, we can experience physical illness or ailments instead.

In January, Saturn (challenges, tests, depression) was just within a degree from a transit over all four angles in Clinton’s chart that will return later this year, and Pluto (death, rebirth, transformation) will be in a challenging aspect to those angles beginning this Spring and continuing over the next couple of years.  Next year Uranus, the planet of electricity and radical surprise, will begin to transit those points as well.  This is a huge time of change for Clinton and he will likely have to leave the spotlight in order to take care of rebalancing his inner world.  If he fails to do this, he could end up with serious problems later.

Planetary news this week!

The next few days bring some powerful influences. A conjunction of the Sun to Jupiter is a beneficial influence that adds confidence to all of our endeavors, and a trine of Mars (energy) to Saturn (discipline) helps to provide the focus to get things done and manifest our desires and wishes. Venus (relating to others) forms a sextile to Mars (aggression) which helps to energize our relationships and aid in collaborative ventures. However, an opposition of Saturn to Venus suggests that there may be tests and challenges in our interpersonal relationships that will require some work to navigate successfully.

All of this leads up to a powerful Solar Eclipse, one of an amazing six eclipses in 2009. The eclipse on January 26 occurs in a New Moon in Aquarius at 2:55 am EST. This New Moon is a potent Aquarian fiesta, with Jupiter conjunct the Sun and Moon, and Chiron and Neptune also in the sign of Aquarius. A New Moon is a time of new beginnings, and in Aquarius we see an emphasis on Justice, innovation, invention, community. Eclipses can be significant harbingers of a shift in awareness or focus, and this one, coming so closely after the inauguration of Barack Obama, is certain to energize the power of that new beginning for the US and the rest of the world as well.

Mercury (the mental function) forms a sextile to Venus on the day of the eclipse, a planetary combination that enhances creativity and facilitates understanding, and is energized by Mars the following day (January 27th). The mind is a crucial player in the Aquarian drama, and the fact that Mercury is so active now suggests that it will be easier to bring our mental processes on board with the consciousness shift occurring now.
