Powerful Aries Full Moon, September 29 2012

by Lynn Hayes
This Full Moon is one of the most powerful events of the summer and is tightly wrapped up into the intense dynamic of change from the square formation between Uranus and Pluto.

Every Full Moon contains an opposition between the Sun and the Moon, and the solar force of conscious awareness creates tension with the lunar force of instinct and emotion.  During the Full Moon the Sun is invisible, seen only in the illumination of the Moon and the power of the inner world.

The Aries Full Moon demands that we energize ourselves into action and face our fears directly rather than shrink into overly polite or cautious behavior. The Moon conjoins Uranus which is already opposed by the Sun, creating an urgency and a restless quality that demands change in any area of our life where we are not living authentically. Pluto challenges the whole system and will force a breakdown in any area that is not supporting the impetus for change. Living a lie? Swallowing your feelings? Hiding from your emotions? None of these things will be possible at this Full Moon.

This is the Full Moon of the warrior gods and goddesses. We are all called upon now to be our best selves – to rise to the challenge and be co-creators of the transformation.  Fortunate we have some powerful allies for the journey.  The transformational power of Pluto harmonizes in a sextile to Chiron, the facilitator of healing and personal evolution, pushing our inner wounds to the surface where they can be lanced like a boil to remove the poisons that lie beneath.  And Saturn lays out a comforting grid of structure and a solid foundation as it forms a trine to Neptune, harnessing our imagination and creativity in ways that can help us to plan for a better future.

This is an intense time, and this Full Moon, while not altogether comfortable, will help empower us to be better prepared.

Full Moon in Aries: October 11, 2011

Aries Full MoonThe Aries Full Moon occurs on the evening of October 11th. As in any Full Moon, the Aries Moon opposes the Libra Sun, bringing the Aries/Libra polarity into the forefront of our awareness.

The Aries/Libra dynamic balances the need for self-orientation (Aries) with a focus on  The Other (Libra). Libra itself  seeks to achieve balance, and in that quest there is often a loss of the desired balance  as the quest for harmony, especially in relationships, takes precedence over personal needs. Aries maintains the focus on personal needs and is less interested in achieving balance.

On the other hand (a good Libra expression, since Libra can always see the opposing point of view), where Aries can be self-centered and impulsive, acting without thought or consideration, Libra’s ability to intuit the proper course that will please everyone can be more useful in many life experiences.

This is the dilemma that the Aries/Libra Full Moon brings to all of us.

The Libra Sun in the Full Moon chart conjoins Saturn (isolation, structure, achievement) which suggests that solitude and focus will be highlighted so that an ideal inner balance may be achieved.  Saturn is in Libra now where it is said to be exalted, so the presence of Saturn (typically thought to be a negative experience) will be a helpful ally in achieving the desired balance of this lunation.

A trine from Mercury (the mind and mental process) to Neptune (creativity and spirituality) will culminate the day following the Full Moon and helps to open the doorways of the mind and enhance the sensitivity of the senses. But we are dealing with Aries here after all – a focus on the Self and initiating something bold and courageous will be the order of the day. A wide trine from Mars (the planet of drive and inspiration) to the Aries Moon will help to energize the process and provide a touch of excitement.

The effect of a Full Moon is thought to last for a few days on either side of the actual event.  Being mindful of the planetary energies at work can help us to utilize these energies to their best effects.

Full Moon in Aries: October 22, 2010

Art by Steven Miller

The Full Moon on Friday, October 22nd, is at the very last degree of Aries.  Aries is the sign of initiation and courage; the sign that inspires us to forge ahead despite our fears and anxieties and make things happen.  The 29th degree is a symbol of completion, and the Full Moon is the symbol of fulfillment and readiness for gestation.  There is a sense here of a readiness for personal growth and evolution that can come to fruition if our conscious intention reflects the purity of the Will.

In this Full Moon we have the Sun at 29 degrees Libra opposite the Moon at 29 degree Aries.  The balance between Me and Others is the focal point of the Libra/Aries polarity, and with Venus, Libra’s ruling planet, currently unaspected and in her invisible phase of her retrograde journey, our connections with others can be obscured and confusing.  This gives the Aries Full Moon an opportunity to spring into action in a way that is more self-oriented than the Aries/Libra polarity would normally permit.

For a few days around the Full Moon we can feel more completely exactly who we are; less concerned with what others think and what others need from us.  This could create difficulties in our interpersonal relationships, especially with Mars in a challenging square to both Chiron and Neptune.

The Sun and the Moon are harmoniously aspected by Chiron (the soul healer) and Neptune (the spirit dancer), which suggests that as we orient ourselves deeply with the Truth within healing can occur gently and gradually as long as we let go and let the beauty of the lunar energy unfold.

However, a square of Mars to Neptune and Chiron may erode our confidence and fog the mind for a day or two, increasing our emotional sensitivity and the potential for hurt feelings and personal dramas.  Still, a harmonious sextile of Mercury to Pluto that is embedded in the Full Moon chart helps the mind (Mercury) to penetrate below the surface (Pluto) and reveal the essential Truth that lies underneath the drama or discussions.

Full Moon times are full of emotional and spiritual power; the Moon represents the heart of our being as well as our emotional heart, and during the Full Moon we have an opportunity to easily strip away the layers or protection that the personality builds to shield the Moon from danger, but which also separates us from our own hearts.

Full Moon in Aries, September 23 2010

Aries Full Moon September 2010The Full Moon occurs on September 23rd at 5:17 am Eastern time in the sign of Aries, balancing the Sun which has just entered Libra.  Full Moons occur when the Moon is in opposition to the Sun, and oppositions require that we learn to balance opposite forces.

The Aries/Libra polarity is itself concerned with finding balance and harmony (Libra) while staying firmly rooted in our own individuality (Aries).  Me and you, this and that, here and there – all are differences that need to be brought into balance under the Aries Full Moon, but the Aries emphasis is on the need to maintain our sense of individual purpose.

This is the Harvest Moon that occurs very close to the Equinox (in this case, just one day later).  The chart for the Full Moon brings together the separating cardinal planets for one more dramatic moment, although this will not in any way approach the intensity of the summer. Still, with the Moon at zero degrees Aries where it is at the very beginning of the zodiac, there is an initiation here that must be attended to. Both the Sun and the Moon are in a close square to Pluto, and Pluto demands that we surrender and shed the old skins we are hauling around with us that no longer fit the persons we have become. The Aries Moon, especially at zero degrees, is very ready to begin something completely new and let go of any hesitation or fears that may have taken over our lives.
The Full Moon chart has an unaspected Mercury in its own sign of Virgo, reminding us that we are adaptable creatures with the ability to use the mind (Mercury) to come up with solutions to any problem. But the chart also includes a challenging square of Saturn to the Nodes of the Moon, which suggest that this is also a time of testing and that hard work (Saturn) will be necessary in order to fulfill our real destiny (Nodes).

The Autumn Equinox and the Harvest Moon

sadly I do not know to whom this artwork should be attributed!! The Autumn Equinox takes place on Wednesday when the Sun enters Libra, followed the next day by the Full Moon in Aries which is often called the Harvest Moon.  Thanks to John and Susan Townley for finding this interesting article on the subject from the Wall Street Journal of all places.

Astrologer Nick Campion is quoted in the article as a “historian of cultural astronomy at the Universe of Wales.”  Astrology isn’t mentioned, even though Nick is really in charge of the department of cultural astronomy and astrology.  In any case, I found this comment particularly interesting:

while the Babylonians celebrated their “main new year” in the spring, their tradition of having a minor autumnal new year has carried over into both mainstream religion and secular practice. Nick Campion, a historian of cultural astronomy at the University of Wales, notes two echoes of ancient autumn observances today. “It’s a custom inherited by Jews—hence Rosh Hashanah,” he told me, “while the beginning of the academic year in autumn is a secular legacy.”

link to article.

The Harvest Moon is the Full Moon that occurs closest to the Autumn Equinox.  The fact that the Full Moon occurs within hours of the Equinox is significant because the energy of the Full Moon is embedded in the Equinox chart which will be used to forecast weather and other events of the next three months until the Winter Solstice.
