The trouble with Demi Moore

Demi Moore astrologyThe troubled actress Demi Moore has been in the news lately after she was hospitalized for what appears to be a combination of prescription drugs, nitrous oxide and alcohol.  While her behavior has been more erratic since her separation from third husband Ashton Kutcher, Demi has a long history of emotional problems and drug addiction that nearly caused her firing from St. Elmo’s Fire, the film that brought her to national attention.

Demi’s astrological chart has some of the classic hallmarks of addictive behavior:  Pisces rising, Sun conjunct Neptune, Jupiter and Chiron in the 12th house.  (Source of birth data: Astrotheme)  Pisces, Neptune and the 12th house are all related and share the quality of an urge to transcend the material world.  This can occur through spiritual ascension, through romance, through art – or it can occur through addictions to love, alcohol and drugs.

Demi’s childhood was no picnic – after her father abandoned the family her mother became an alcoholic and married  an alcoholic who was unable to keep down a job.  The family moved 30-40 times while Demi was a child and the stepfather committed suicide when Demi was 15.  She was born in 1962 when Uranus and Pluto were nearing their exact conjunction, and everyone born between 1962 and 1968 carries this dramatic combination of radical change (Uranus) and total transformation (Pluto) in their charts.

Between 1962 and 1965, Saturn (challenge and self-doubt) and Chiron (emotional wounding) were opposite the Uranus/Pluto pair – a difficult planetary system that generally comes with an extremely sensitive psycho/emotional system that is can easily become imbalanced if not consciously attended to.  Often these individuals carry a great deal of psychic pain, but if they do the hard work of healing they can also become brilliant in their field and lead happily and fulfilling lives.

Demi Moore is noted for her obsession with her looks so it’s interesting that as a child she had to have several surgeries for crossed eyes.  The Sun rules the left eye in a woman, and the Moon rules the right eye and in Demi’s chart the Sun is opposed by the Moon.  The Sun represents the consciousness of Self and the Moon the instinctive emotional realm, and when these two are out of balance the right and left hemispheres of the brain do not easily connect.

The charts of actors often carry a strong Pisces/Neptune signature, since this urge to transcend the limits of our own personality can make it very easy to slip out of our own Self and literally become someone else.  But while this quality makes for a successful acting career, it’s not always the best thing for self-understanding and awareness.

Demi has a stellium in Scorpio which includes a very tight Sun/Venus conjunction which also embraces Neptune and Mercury.  Scorpio is very aware of the flow of power and the use of sexuality to achieve it, and this is especially true when Venus, the planet of attraction, is in Scorpio.  Yet the presence of Neptune in this mix, especially conjoining the Sun where it blurs (Neptune) her sense of Self (Sun), confuses her motivation and causes her to lose direction.  And this tendency is exacerbated by the Pisces ascendant (IF the birth information is correct) which shares the Neptunian qualities of distortion and illusion.

In addition, Demi has Mars, the planet of drive and motivation, in the self-oriented sign of Leo which craves attention and significance.  Mars forms a challenging square to the Scorpio planets and it’s also opposed by Saturn, the planet of limitation and self-doubt which often sets up a situation in which the individual feels that they will never have (Saturn) what they most want from life (Mars).

I suspect that under the drug use (Neptune/Pisces) and obsession with beauty (Sun/Venus) and sexual attraction (Scorpio) is a tremendous rage (Mars) that fuels her need to obliterate her consciousness with drugs and alcohol.  Demi’s daughter said in a recent interview that her mother has jumped from religion to religion throughout her life, but it takes more than religion (in this case Kabbalah) to facilitate the kind of healing that this kind of personality requires – it takes genuine courage and the desire to strip ourselves of the veneer that cements our false identity into place and prevents us from knowing who we really are.

The astrology of the Shriver/Schwarzenegger split

Arnold Schwarzenegger Maria Shriver separateI suspect that more people were surprised when Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver married than when they announced their split this week after 25 years of marriage.

When clients come for an astrological reading about their relationship, they generally want to hear that their relationship is compatible.  But astrologers know that compatibility does not always spell success in relationships.  Couples who are compatible with each other: who  think the same way, who feel the same things, who want the same lifestyle – these couples rarely marry or stay together.  We are more likely to gravitate towards partners who have qualities that we lack; partners who stretch us and help us to develop qualities that may be more difficult for us.

It will surprise no one to learn that Arnold Schwarzenegger was born with the Sun in Leo, but that Leo Sun which is larger than life is locked in a challenging square with Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing.  When the ego (Sun) has been wounded (Chiron), that Leo desire for attention and acclaim becomes bigger and more urgent.   It doesn’t help that a tight Saturn/Pluto conjunction in his chart (also in Leo) suggests a deeply entrenched fear and anxiety, and the proximity of this conjunction to his Sun shows that his confidence is likely rather superficial. The anxiety of Saturn and Pluto falls in Schwarzenegger’s second house of money and personal resources, and I suspect that he has never forgotten the insecurity of his impoverished childhood.

Such a challenge to the Sun requires hard work and discipline (Saturn) to overcome one’s fears and self-doubts, and Pluto’s presence there shows a nascent connection to one’s inner development of personal power that will be the key to transformation.  It’s no surprise that Schwarzenegger sought public office in order to achieve this power in an external manner, but it’s the inner power that is required here.

A distressed Leo often requires constant stroking of the ego (we saw this same dynamic with Bill Clinton), and it’s not unusual for this need to lead to infidelities.  Maria Shriver’s friends report that she complained for many years about Schwarzenegger’s “roving eye” and had been planning to leave him before both her parents died over the past few years.  But with the family-oriented sign of Cancer rising, and with his Venus in Cancer, Schwarzenegger likely feels a deep connection to his family and a desire to keep his family intact; however, like many marriages, that need and the need for fame and power cannot always be resolved.

Maria Shriver’s chart shows a Scorpio Sun in the sixth house of service and work; in fact, she has five planets in the sixth house revealing her deep commitment to helping others.  With Taurus rising she avoids change wherever possible and prefers stability and financial security to a more transitory life.  When Schwarzenegger was governor she rarely spent time in Sacramento with him but instead stayed in their home in Los Angeles.

Shriver’s Moon is in Leo, so there is a part of her that also needs the attention that Schwarzenegger seeks so easily.  Her Moon conjoins his Pluto which generally shows an intense and powerful connection, although the Pluto person (in this case Schwarzenegger) often overpowers the Moon person who can feel left behind.  His Saturn also conjoins her Moon which can feel confining but also protective.  This is an important significator for marriage and commitment.  The linkages between their charts is less powerful for him than for her which has likely made it easier for him to minimize the marriage if in fact that is what occurred.

Shriver’s progressed Midheaven is preparing to move into Aries – the beginning of a new 30-year cycle that will inspire a powerful motivation to find her own way in the world and develop a career in which she can play a leading role.  Last year’s Chiron/Neptune conjunction transited her ascendant between May of 2009 and November of 2010 – a cycle which likely caused her to re-examine who she is and how she wanted to express her life.

The planet Uranus is at work here as well, forming a trine to Uranus in her chart.  Because Uranus is the planet of personal innovation and authenticity, under this influence we strive to bring new experiences into our lives that will help us to feel truly free.

The breakup is signified in Schwarzenegger’s chart by a challenging square of Uranus to his Moon.  The Moon represents emotional security, but also the women in our lives and this cycle reflects the abrupt change in his living situation.  It’s not uncommon for a man to be surprised when a woman leaves, even though she may have been dropping warning signals for years and the timing of this  Uranus cycle suggests that this may have been the case.

In any event I know we wish them all the best as they strive, like all of us, to find peace and happiness in a changing world.

The astrology of the Tony Parker/Eva Longoria split

longoria-parker.jpgJust one day after both parties denied split rumors last week, actress Eva Longoria has filed for divorce from basketball star Tony Parker after three years of marriage.  Ms. Longoria found hundreds of text messages on her husband’s phone from the wife of another NBA player.

The Longoria/Parker relationship is a great example of how unhelpful Sun Sign compatibility is when it is considered as the most important factor in a relationship.  Longoria’s Pisces Sun is in a nearly exact sextile, an extremely harmonious aspect, to Parker’s Taurus Sun, suggesting a high degree of compatibility between them.  But people are complex, and these two are no exception.

In Eva Longoria’s astrological chart her Pisces Sun conjoins Jupiter, the traditional ruler of Pisces and the planet of good fortune and optimism.  She definitely has a sensitive side, but she has a strong and forceful personality with her Aries (the warrior) Moon and Venus and Mars, planet of aggression, in a challenging aspect to Uranus, planet of radical behavior.  Her chart shows that she is very like the fiery character she plays on the Desperate Housewives program – a powerhouse of energy with a sweet and sensitive side.

Tony Parker’s chart is also sensitive with his Moon in the dreamy and empathic sign of Pisces, but he lacks the fire that Longoria’s chart reveals.  His Mars is in Libra, demonstrating a drive (Mars) to please others and find harmony in relationships (Libra), and while his Venus is in that fiery sign Aries, suggesting that in his relationships (Venus) he needs to be the one in charge (Aries), Saturn opposes Venus which can create a great deal of self-doubt and hesitation.  I suspect that over the course of their relationship he became overwhelmed by her assertive personality and his own insecurities took control.

Both of them are wounded people as indicated by the tight aspects of Chiron, the wounded healer, in their charts.  Longoria has Chiron conjunct her Moon and Venus, which reveals a wound (Chiron) to her sense of beauty (Venus) and security (Moon).  Longoria has openly discussed her background of poverty and the fact that in her family she was considered the ugly one, and called the “ugly duckling.”

Parker’s Chiron conjoins his Sun, affecting his self-image and ability to know who he is.  Over the past couple of years transiting Chiron in the sky has been moving back and forth over a challenging square to Chiron in his own chart, and Chiron is virtually stationary right now in a square to his natal Sun, an aspect which is in effect from October to December of 2010.  All of his inner insecurities have likely been coming to the surface during this period. (Please note that astrological explanations do not excuse bad behavior; but it is helpful to understand the motivating factors behind the actions of individuals.)

There are some difficult interaspects between their charts that create challenges between them, most notably the opposition of Pluto in Parker’s chart to the sensitive Moon/Venus/Chiron combination in Longoria’s chart.  Pluto is a powerhouse of intensity and often suggests danger and the death of something, and this is a challenging dynamic in the chart of any two people.  It also appeared that it may have been difficult for them to really get to know each other, since the Neptune (confusion/illusion) of each of them is in a challenging square to the Sun (self) of the other.

Many of my clients who have been married for long periods of time have challenging dynamics like this in their chart, but it does require a great deal of commitment and work to manage these relationships.  Parker has not yet gone through his Saturn Return, the period of our lives at age 28-30 when we really begin to grow up and mature.

Rob Pattinson and the Twilight Eclipse film premiere

Rob PattinsonI thought it was interesting that the premiere of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse film occurred the night of the actual lunar eclipse.  The Twilight Saga has given new sexiness to the vampire genre, and brought a reluctant Robert Pattinson into the limelight.

Rob Pattinson was born May 13, 1986 in London.  There are rumors of an 8:32 am birthtime, but until I see that time somewhere besides Astrotheme I won’t feel confident using it.   In any case, Pattinson’s astrological chart explains why he is more interested in the craft of acting than the ego-driven business of stardom.

Pattinson’s Sun is in Taurus, which craves comfort and security above all things, and his Moon is in its own sign of Cancer, the sign of extreme sensitivity and emotional depth.  The combination of Taurus and Cancer is oriented very strongly towards security of all kinds – emotional, financial, in business, etc.   His Moon is opposed by Neptune, so he is a dreamer and an artist.  Pattinson has a strong musical background, having played guitar and piano for much of his life.   This also gives him a strong romantic streak which is also reflected in Jupiter in his chart falling in the sign of Pisces, ruled by Neptune and also embodying the archetype of the artist and the creative individual.

Girls will be interested to know that despite Pattinson’s romantic streak relationships will always be complicated for him.  Although his Moon is in Cancer, which is very family-oriented and nurturing, Venus in his chart is in Gemini, a sign that requires a lot of variety of experiences, and Venus is opposed by Uranus which is the planet of change and freedom.  On one level Pattinson will always need to keep his foot in the door, or at least have a sense of independence in any relationship he becomes involved in.

There’s no doubt that Pattinson is serious, and a hard worker.  Mars in his chart is in Capricorn, where it is said to be exalted because the energy of Mars is at its most effective in the disciplined sign of Capricorn.  In addition, Saturn in his chart  is in Sagittarius, suggesting that he has some difficulty (Saturn) with confidence and being able to relax and enjoy life – it is also retrograde, so the negative and critical voice of Saturn is internalized and therefore a bit louder even than usual.   Pattinson is known for being shy and “self-deprecating to a fault.”

And yet he also has a great sense of humor, which could be reflected by his unknown ascendant.

In any case, this is the chart of an actor who is serious about his craft (Mars in Capricorn), and creative and sensitive enough to become a highly skilled actor.

Bronx Mowgli Wentz!

wentzSinger Ashlee Simpson and and her rocker husband Pete Wentz have welcomed a child into the world: Bronx Mowgli Wentz (11/20/2008, time unknown, NYC).  You can tell without even glancing at his astrological chart that he will have quite an unusual beginning!  What a name – named after Bronx, New York, most eclectic of the boroughs, and Mowgli, the child of Rudyard Kipling and Disney tales who was raised by a pack of wolves who goes through quite an identity crisis before deciding to join the human pack.

Bronx Mowgli was born under the sign of Scorpio, at the critical 29th degree.  The 29th degree of any sign signifies a life of transition and growth – it’s kind of a “last chance” to get things right.  This is a significant lifetime for little Bronx Mowgli and there will be a necessity for him to plow into Scorpio experiences that will help him to perfect the Scorpio challenge of living a life that fearlessly delves into the underworld of emotional intensity, passion, and power.  His Sun conjuncts both Mars and Mercury, although Mars (the aggressive drive and instinct) is in Sagittarius instead of Scorpio which suggests that he will be torn between the need to remain focused in the emotional realm (Scorpio) and the need to expand his horizons and search for experiences that are lighter and more buoyant (Sagittarius).  Still, with Mercury  (thought and communication) in Scorpio along with the Sun, he will be an intense little guy who is passionate about everything.

We don’t know exactly what time he was born but we do know that it was Thursday night, so Bronx Mowgli’s Moon is in Virgo, revealing that his emotional nature (Moon) will require a sense of order and good boundaries (Virgo) in order to feel secure.  That Moon conjuncts Saturn, planet of restriction and isolation, which suggests that he is likely to be a lonely child that tends toward sadness and perhaps depression.

The Moon is also opposed (180 degree aspect) by Uranus, planet of innovation and radical change and behavior,  Saturn and Uranus are opposed in the sky right now, and you can read more about that phenomenon here but basically, with these two planets there is a tension between the revolutionary tendencies of Uranus and the need for discipline and restriction of Saturn.  This conflict will be a part of Bronx Mowgli’s nature and it will affect his ability to feel emotionally secure, as signified by the Moon which plays an integral part in this dynamic.

Because the Moon often represents the mother, Bronx is likely to feel that Ashlee is unavailable to him (Saturn/Moon) or that her behavior is erratic and that he can’t depend on her (Moon/Uranus).  It may be difficult for him to make friends and he may be a child who spend more time alone (Saturn/Moon) or with imaginary playmates (Uranus/Moon).  But Venus, planet of love and beauty, forms a trine (harmonious aspect) to the Moon which is an extremely beneficial combination that bestows an ability to get along with others, and also suggests that despite difficulties in his relationship with Ashlee there will be an underlying affection that will overcome the problems that are certain to arise.

In addition Jupiter, planet of abundance and opportunity, forms an exact trine to Saturn and to his Moon as well, which signifies that the loneliness that he experiences as a child will help him to grow and expand (Jupiter) beyond the limitations of his circumstances. He will have an underlying faith in life (Jupiter/Moon) that will help him to maintain a more lofty perspective despite any childhood experiences that challenge him.

This is a wonderful combination of stressful and harmonious aspects that denote a lifetime of evolutionary growth and positive change through challenge.  If he was born between 8 and 11 pm Leo will be rising in his chart, which will relieve some of the Scorpio pressure to remain in the Underworld and will help him to navigate a life in the spotlight.

The End of Celebrity Journalism?

TMZ 2006One of the things I most like to post about on this blog is celebrity profiles and profiles on celebrity couples.  First of all, with Gemini rising I love a good gossip.  But more important, they make great demonstrations of how great a tool astrology can be to help understand the underlying personality characteristics that drive us to behave in certain ways.

Pluto’s travel through Sagittarius, the sign that rules, among other things, journalism, entertainment and celebrity, has brought the passion for celebrity journalism to an obsessive (Pluto) crescendo.  Princess Diana was supposedly killed (Pluto) fleeing a pack of papparazzi (Sagittarius) back in 1995.  The furor over Paris Hilton and other celebrities famous only for being famous is a hallmark of Pluto in Sag.

Usually when life is difficult people turn to fantasy for comfort, such as during the recession of the early 1980s when TV shows like Dynasty and Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous were very popular. (It’s an interesting factoid that Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous began in 1982 and ended in 1995, following exactly the timing of Pluto’s trip through Scorpio).  But with Pluto  soon to be firmly settled into Capricorn for the next 15 years, the obsessive interest in celebrity seems to be on the wane.

This is nowhere more evident than in the decline of TMZ.com, one of the brashest and most Sagittarian of the celebrity blogs:

It would be unrealistic to say the end is near for TMZ.com, the gossip website founded by Harvey Levin that Mel Gibson’s anti-Semitic tirade put on the map. But all signs are pointing to trouble for the AOL-Telepictures celebrity venture. Readership is down. So is revenue. Top staffers are leaving. The spin-off show TMZ has lost its buzz. And TMZ.com just saw People.com overtake it for the No. 2 spot of most-visited celebrity websites (Yahoo’s OMG is No. 1, thanks to all of the search giant’s traffic dumping). …

TMZ will live and die by the celebrity news cycle. In the beginning, TMZ reacted to it: Michael Richards said something racist? Post! Lindsay Lohan got in an accident? Post! Now, they’re practically manufacturing celebrity news, or at least trying to redefine the criteria for what makes something newsworthy. Part of this is the fault of … celebrities. Britney Spears is cleaning up her act. Paris Hilton has been staying home some nights. Lindsay Lohan is dating Samantha Ronson, and keeping out of trouble. But that doesn’t mean, say, alawsuit filed by former Baywatch star Nicole Eggert against his ex-boyfriend is newsworthy. So why the breathless reportage? Because there’s nothing else going on.

I’ve certainly been noticing that myself as I hunt for interesting celebrity news to post on.  Celebrity profiles are much less interesting when there’s nothing really newsworthy going on there.  So it looks like my astrological profiles are going to have to be a lot less gossipy and more like serious journalism.  And really, that’s not a bad thing.

Anne Hathaway’s Neptune Problem

hathaway_follieriAnne Hathaway’s ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri. spent his 30th birthday in jail after being convicted for 14 counts of fraud and money laundering.  Columnists are debating how much Anne actually knew about what Raffaello was up to when he represented himself as a representative of the Vatican in order to swindle billionaire Ron Burkle out of millions of dollars – perhaps astrology can tell why Anne fell for Follieri.

Anne Hathaway has appeared to live life as charmed as the princess she played in the Princess Diaries.  Raised in affluent Millburn New Jersey, she has been acting since she was thirteen and is a trained soprano as well as stage actress.  Her first break came at age 16 when she starred in a failed TV series, and she has worked steadily in major films ever since.  She is the new face of Lancome beauty products.

Anne’s astrological chart (11/12/1982, birthtime unknown) shows a quadruple conjunction of the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter.  Venus and Jupiter are the two most beneficial planets in the astrological language.  When Venus is fused with the Sun (the Self) in the birthchart, it grants beauty and the power of attraction.  Jupiter, the planet of prosperity and abundance, joins the Sun and Venus to create a powerfully positive charge in Anne’s life.  This is a trio of luck and good fortune, and nearly certain success.  People with a strong Jupiter in their charts often are confident and assured, with a strong sense of social justice and moral guidelines, and the presence of Mercury (mind and communication) there explains her strong intelligence and ability to slip in and out of roles as an actor.  Mercury can be a bit of a shapeshifter and enjoys trying on various lifestyles for size.

This trio of planets fall in the passionate sign of Scorpio, revealing Anne’s intensely emotional nature.  She is not a person who enjoys the superficial: when she falls for a man, a cause or a film she wants to dive in with all that she has.  Her Moon, showing her emotional needs and characteristics, is in Libra, the sign that yearns for partnership.  That Moon in her chart is squared by Neptune, planet of mystery, confusion and illusion which suggests that she is perhaps excessively romantic and has a tendency to idealize the people around her.  She loves to be in love and wants to see the best in everyone she meets.

When Anne met Follieri in 2004, transiting Neptune was beginning a series of challenging aspects to that powerful quadruple conjunction in Anne’s chart of the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Jupiter that continued until May of this year when she finally ended the relationship.  Under Neptune cycles we are more idealistic and therefore more easily duped, and this was certainly true of Anne Hathaway.

Follieri (6/26/1978, birthtime unknown), with the Sun in Cancer and the Moon in Pisces, was surely sensitive and nurturing and Anne would have responded to his sensitivity.  His Moon (emotional security) linked up with her Venus (love), a powerful signature for “love at first sight.”  The brilliance of her entire quadruple Scorpio conjunction was in harmonious aspect to his Moon, and I suspect he fell for her as hard as she did for him.  She was a princess, and he was a person who was striving to be a prince.

But their relationship would have been intensely physical as well, with Mars (drive and desire) in both their charts in perfect alignment.  This was a passionate connection both physically and emotionally.  Shortly after the two met, Follieri began a program of vaccinating school-age children in South America, a project which Anne found to be “an aphrodisiac.” Uranus (autonomy and radical behavior) is in a stressful aspect to Follieri’s Venus (relationships and partnership) which suggests that it would be difficult for him to settle down into a committed relationship.

One very interesting aspect in Follieri’s chart is the square (challenging aspect) between Pluto (transformation, death and rebirth) to Jupiter (philosophy, prosperity and religion) in light of the fact that Follieri’s scam involved profiting from the sale of properties owned by the Catholic Church (Jupiter) to settle lawsuits from sexual abuse (Pluto/Jupiter).   The square of Pluto to Jupiter in the birthchart often shows an individual who is either rigid (Pluto) in his/her righteousness or religiosity (Jupiter), or someone whose confidence and desire for an easy road (Jupiter) becomes their downfall (Pluto).

In April 2007, when Follieri’s world began to collapse, he was entering into the first stage of his Saturn Return, the planetary cycle that happens at age 28-30.  During the Saturn Return we are challenged by the gods, and if we take the easy road we flunk those challenges.  This is the road Follieri was on, and it was at this time that Ron Burkle sued him for misappropriating funds for their partnership.  Transiting Neptune at the time was throwing a blanket of misty idealism and confusion over Anne’s chart and she was doing her best to believe in her boyfriend until the Neptune cloud lifted last Spring and she finally ended things with Follieri.

Anne’s strong Scorpio nature does not let go easily, but her Capricorn Mars is all business.  She has her eye on the future and with Saturn and Neptune out of the way her path should be much more direct now.

Cameron Diaz: Commitment Phobia and the Pluto Square

Cameron Diaz has reportedly told boyfriend Paul Sculfor that she’d rather be single, even though he’s moved his stuff into her Los Angeles home.  Cameron seems to shy away from romantic entanglements, and even during her long relationship with Justin Timberlake the two spent long periods of time apart and her friends reported that Cameron was unable to commit to the relationship.  She even admitted on the Ellen Degeneres show that she is commitment phobic.  So I wanted to take a look at and see what’s going on there.

Cameron Diaz

Cameron Diaz

Cameron is a Virgo, and we usually think of Virgos as being shy and retiring prudes who avoid the spotlight, but this kind of two-dimensional portrait is not always true for everyone.  Cameron’s Virgo Sun is conjunct Mars (the warrior planet) which gives her that dynamic energy that she is so famous for, along with a love of adventure and tomboy tendencies.  Mars is a masculine planet and gives Cameron that tomboy personality and a need to be the one in charge – the leader in the relationship.  She will never like being confined by another.

Cameron’s Moon (showing her emotional needs) is in Taurus, the sign of stability and security, so there is a part of her that craves a life of comfort and serenity.  The Taurus moon can also be stubborn, inflexible, and easily threatened and Cameron’s Moon is squared by Mercury which reveals an inner conflict between the mind (Mercury) and the heart (Moon).  This can make it more difficult for her to make rational decisions and her heart often leads her with her head likely often following in regret.

She has a strong nurturing quality, with Venus in the home-loving sign of Cancer.  She loves to cook for a big group of people, and she is strongly family oriented like most Cancer types are.  Venus shows the way we express our love and the types of relationships we need, and Cameron needs to feel she is taking care of others, and that they are nurturing her as well.  But her Venus is squared by Uranus, the planet of revolution and radical behavior.  When the planet of rebellion conflicts with the goddess of love, the result is an independent person who needs a tremendous amount of autonomy.  This results in a commitment conflict between the Cancerian family orientation of her Venus and the radical independence of Uranus.

This kind of conflict is not uncommon, and I see it every day in my clients.  The trick is managing our life so that we are able to be able to fulfill both sides of ourselves and find both the independence and the ability to remain connected with others.  The conflict is more stressful in Cameron’s chart because Venus is also squared by Chiron (wounding and healing), denoting that relationships can be both painful and her greatest healers.

The sign Virgo is named after the Virgin, which in ancient times meant “unmarried” rather than chaste.  It is a characteristic of Virgo to be able to spend long periods of time without a partner until just the right partner is found.  Jupiter has been opposing Cameron’s Venus since March of this year, expanding (Jupiter) her relationship possibilities and providing lots of alternatives.  You may remember from your mythology that Jupiter did not like to settle down with just one woman, and during this period Cameron will be even more independent than is usual.  This transit is coinciding with a longer planetary cycle involving Uranus which tends to want us to keep all of our options open.

Transiting Pluto began a square to Pluto in Cameron’s chart back in January.  This is a challenging 2-3 year cycle called the Pluto Square that occurs for everyone, these days at about age 36-38 making it the first of the “midlife crisis transits.”  The Pluto Square is a time of challenge and difficulty, as Pluto dredges up old unresolved emotions, dramas, painful feelings, and power struggles.  Often we face death during the Pluto square, and sometimes that takes the form of the death of a parent.  As Pluto moved back to the second phase of this difficult cycle Cameron’s father died unexpectedly earlier this year, and shortly afterwards Cameron was reportedly hospitalized for stress.

It’s the difficult times that bring us the most significant times of empowerment, and that is no less true of celebrities.
