Chiron and Neptune – the final dance

Chiron and Neptune are within twelve minutes of a conjunction now, about as close as they are going to come before finally separating in late November.  Although their conjunction is not exactly at the same degree, the influence of these two planets has been making itself known since early 2009.  Chiron is the healer of the soul, and Neptune connects us to our transcendent, creative and spiritual selves so these two planets together are a powerful pair.

Over the past eighteen months since Chiron and Neptune have been traveling in tandem there has been a powerful urge in the collective psyche for healing and reparations of all kinds.  See this link for other articles about this planetary combination.

On a personal level, many of us have had deep emotional experiences of release that freed us from the past, or which helped us to break through a longstanding block.  For others this has been a time filled with emotional pain and worry as we struggled to hold on, not realizing that it’s the letting go which ultimately frees us.

In any case, as Chiron and Neptune, both retrograde, take their final bow we may find ourselves looking back to see where there might be wounds that still haunt us; that still prevent us from truly evolving.  These two great spiritual teachers can provide the wisdom that we need to release the stuck energy of the past.

Quoting myself from an earlier article at the dawn of the conjunction:

Both Chiron and Neptune pose difficulty for the expression of the ego. Chiron requires that we process the wounds of the psyche before the ego can manifest in a truly healthy form, and Neptune calls for the transcendence of the ego into the divine unconscious: “from a drop of water to the endless sea.” In Aquarius that transcendence of the ego is even more important as Aquarius is a transpersonal sign; the sign that loves mankind but isn’t so crazy about people as individuals. The new “transhumanism” is a signature of Aquarius, in which technology and innovation are used to perfect the human being.

Because of this transpersonal nature of Aquarius, it is not the sign best suited to the kind of emotional processing that is required by Chiron. Where Scorpio will delve deep into a rich depression and excavate the psychological wisdom that can be found there, Chiron in Aquarius may instead retreat into a world of technology where life is more easily managed and the emotional component is less compelling. The result of this can be a core loneliness and isolation that is not easily rectified. On the other hand, there is also a brilliant innovation at work under the influence of Aquarius, and Chiron in Aquarius can bring about new and unique healing modalities that occur as conventional wisdom is rejected and new ideas brought forth. Aquarius is doubly ruled by Saturn and Uranus, and Chiron is the bridge between them so with Chiron in Aquarius we have a linkage between form (Saturn) and trans-form (Uranus).

In the conjunction, we sometimes get the best of the planets involved and sometimes their more difficult faces, depending on how we approach them and how they affect the rest of our charts. With Chiron and Neptune working in tandem, we are being called to deepen our spiritual experience of life in a body (Neptune) through feeling and releasing the pain of being human (Chiron). Barbara Hand Clow, whose book Chiron: Rainbow Bridge Between the Inner & Outer Planets is a wonderful resource, says that Chiron and Neptune serve to “bring the higher self into space and time” where we can become both grounded into our true natures under Chiron’s influence, and fully aligned with our higher self (Neptune) at the same time.

When Chiron and Neptune are working together, they combine to assist with the work of the soul. The body, the mind, and the ego are all most interested in living a life well-grounded in the material world that offers the maximum of pleasure and the minimum of pain. The soul does not pursue pleasure and avoid pain; instead, there is an embrace of experiences that will assist us at the deepest level to completely learn the lessons that are presented to us so that we can release the past and move forward with greater wisdom.

Chiron facilitates this aspect of soul work by uncovering any wounded places that have been left unresolved so that we can be freed of the blocked energy that our unreleased wounds hold within the body/mind/spirit system. Neptune assists by reminding us that there is a world of experience that lies beyond the boundaries of the material world. Under the influence of Neptune we either open up to experiences of a powerful mystical nature, or else we become confused and deluded as the nature of our personal reality is blurred and we have nothing to replace it with. Neptune bestows creative genius and a spiritual connection to our Divine self as the physical world is transcended, or it can cause us to indulge in escapist and addictive behavior in an effort to escape the prison of our own mind.

As in everything else in the astrological language, there is a both a higher and lower manifestation of both Chiron and Neptune, so when they combine in a conjunction there is the potential to for a transcendent experience of healing spirituality, or a confusing descent into the hell of the unknown of the psyche.

New Moon in Virgo, September 8 2010

from the Symbolon Tarot

The Virgo New Moon occurs Wednesday morning September 8th at 6:30 am Eastern (10:30 am GMT) on the heels of a beautiful aspect from Venus, the planet of love and beauty, to Chiron and Neptune. This Venus aspect has been opening up channels of love and creativity, assuring that old hurts can be more easily healed.

With the Sun and Moon conjunct in Virgo at the New Moon, the emphasis here is on the details of life, bringing us back to earth after this creative opening. Mercury is also in Virgo, traveling retrograde and creating potential snags in our desire to continue to move forward despite the doors that close to keep us retracing our steps and perfecting our progress. Virgo after all seeks a form of perfection that is not often found in this earthly life, and isn’t afraid to stand alone in its efforts to attain that perfection.

This New Moon stands alone in a different way: the lunation itself (the Sun and Moon combination) makes no aspect to any other planets. It is therefore more powerful and confers more energy in the initiation of new Virgo-type projects, such as a new health plan, exercise program, scheme to organize your home or office, clean up old emotional habits.

In Virgo the mind works to create order out of disarray, and with its ruler Mercury traveling retrograde we are encouraged (or we could say forced) pay close attention to ensure that our carefully constructed orderly plan does not go awry.  Mercury is in a harmonious trine to transformational Pluto the day of the New Moon which helps us to focus and let go of extraneous distractions.  There is also a trine from Mars and Venus, both in Libra and celebrating relationships, beauty and harmony, to Chiron and Neptune, the two teachers of healing and transcendent experience.  There is an opportunity in this New Moon to unlock our creativity, but also to open the doors of healing in relationships that need it.

New Moons are times of initiation and new beginnings, so let’s make this a time of conscious attention to detail and creating great order and perfection in our lives.

Me, the flu, and Chiron on the Midheaven

Last week I contracted a respiratory virus, followed by an intestinal virus and as I lay in bed writhing in agony I thought to myself, “wouldn’t it be ironic if I ended up with the swine flu after all of my ranting over the hyping of the flu vaccine?

As it turns out, I don’t have the swine flu.  But I do think it’s interesting that I started to get sick the day Chiron hit the exact degree of my Midheaven.  Because I’m fascinated with the symbolism of astrology and healing, I have been thinking a lot about this and what it means.

We typically think of the Midheaven as being the career, or public projection of the Self.  And certainly that is a part of it.  But the Midheaven also represents the “point of highest aspiration” – our true calling and vocation – our true path.

Planets in the natal chart are said to “culminate” when they conjoin the Midheaven, and when a transiting planet moves across the Midheaven it is at its most powerful in its effect on our future direction.  I expected that when Chiron transited my  Midheaven I would have a stronger interest and acuity in the healing aspects of my work, and instead I became ill.

Illness can be a great teacher too, but we don’t always recognize its teachings until the lesson has passed.  In this case I am realizing that while I attend a great deal to the health of my psyche, I have come to take far less care of the personal ecology of my body.  I indulge in too much chocolate and too little exercise, and t’s really time to start practicing what I preach to strengthen my immune system.

Chiron is a great teacher, as well as a healer.  However, its lessons are not always easy!

More on rage as Mars turns direct

rageWe have been seeing an unbelievable number of high speed car chases and road rage incidents in our local paper, as I wrote earlier, and it seems as though every day there’s another shooting from someone angry at something.  A search of Google news reveals that it’s not just in our area that people are chasing and shooting each other, and now an Ohio State University worker has killed a colleague and himself over a poor work evaluation.  The gunman was 51, the age at which Chiron returns to its place in our birthcharts and stimulates a healing crisis that is often emotional as well as physical. With Chiron and Neptune conjoined in the sky, that Chiron return for this age group is packing a major wallop.

But much of the fault for the heightened rage right now belongs with Mars which has slowed down to a standstill in preparation for its change of direction tomorrow at the zero degree point of Leo, where it is very powerful and expressive. Mars is the planet that presides over the aggressive instinct, but also our ability to become inspired and excited about our lives.  It energizes us, fuels us to achieve our goals, and instills us with enthusiasm and passion.  So Mars has a very positive place in our lives, but when thwarted and distorted it can become a difficult enemy.

If you find you are having trouble right now with anger or depression (depression is often the result of a thwarted Mars, or rage turned inwards) this is an excellent time to channel Mars in a positive way.  Kickboxing, lifting heavy things (either at the gym or in the garden), running – doing something to release any pent-up energy in productive ways.

It’s not a good time to engage in confrontation, but as soon as Mars turns direct tomorrow it will begin to travel more quickly and its effect will be greatly minimized.

Pope facilitates the beginning of healing under Chiron and Neptune

Better late than never I suppose:

The sexual abuse of children is not just a “heinous crime” but a “grave sin” that offends God and wounds human dignity, Pope Benedict XVI  said Tuesday after a two-day meeting with Irish Catholic bishops at the Vatican.

The weakening of faith has also been a “significant contributing factor” in the sexual abuse of minors, the pope said, adding that “current painful situation will not be resolved quickly.”

The pope’s comments came in a written Vatican statement at the end of the meeting, the largest one yet about the scandal that has rocked the church from Ireland to the Vatican and beyond.

A damning report by an independent Irish commission in November found the Catholic Church in Ireland had covered up the “widespread” abuse of children from 1975 to 2004.

Today, on the exact conjunction of Chiron (wounding and healing) and Neptune (spirituality and sacrifice) the Pope took a step towards healing the victims of the widespread sexual abuse that afflicted Catholic churches not only in Ireland but all over the world.

The healing of wounds that is Chiron’s specialty has been in the news lately on another topic: thehealing of Iraq war veterans through talking about their experiences:

The act of killing is as fundamental to war as oxygen is to fire. Yet it is also the one thing many combat veterans avoid discussing when they return home, whether out of shame, guilt or a deep fear of being misunderstood.

But a new study of Iraq war veterans by researchers in San Francisco suggests that more discussion of killing may help veterans cope with an array of mental health problems stemming from war.

The study, published last week in The Journal of Traumatic Stress, found that soldiers who reported having killed in combat, or who gave orders that led to killing, were more likely to report the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol abuse, anger and relationship problems. The study was based on data from health assessments conducted on about 2,800 soldiers who returned from Iraq in 2005 and 2006.

Chiron heals through exposing the wound to the light of consciousness where it can be managed and treated, and because Neptune rules deception and illusion as well as spirituality, in the conjunction of Chiron to Neptune the healing of damage by deception is a crucial part of the transformational process.

New Moon in Aquarius today!

Aquarius New MoonCrescent Moon art by Carl Homstad.

This has been an exciting astrological week, with Mercury having entered Aquarius on the 10th and Venus leaving Aquarius for Pisces. While Mercury is in Aquarius (for the rest of the month) the mind (Mercury) is full of new ideas and brilliant new discoveries, while Venus turns her attention from the realm of reason to the world of Spirit and flow. Venus in Pisces brings us additional creativity which is encouraged by the Aquarian inventiveness of the mind (Mercury).

That inventiveness begins to take form on the 12th when Mercury forms a harmonious trine to Saturn, stabilizing the mental process and encouraging avenues of expression in which something practical is created. This stability is threatened a bit the following day with a stressful opposition from Mercury to Mars (aggression) and the Aquarian New Moon

New Moons are times of new beginnings, when the solar principle of consciousness and ego development (Sun) conjoins the lunar instinctive principle governing that which is more hidden (Moon). This New Moon is in Aquarius and aligns within a degree with Chiron and Neptune, so the Sun, Moon, Chiron and Neptune are all powerfully aligned as a tremendous force for healing and integration on a soul level. With the energy of this New Moon it’s time to integrate all of the lessons of emotional balance that Chiron and Neptune have been teaching since February of 2009 when they first aligned, and move forward in a completely new direction. This visionary Aquarian influence is all about getting un-stuck and using the power of the mind and reason to move us out of dead areas of our lives and into new beginnings.

This New Moon also includes a harmonious sextile from Venus (relating) to Pluto (transformation) that helps us to get real in all of our dealing with others, and another pleasant sextile from Mars (assertiveness) to Saturn (discipline) which helps us to create a solid plan in our life to help us to move forward. These two influences culminate on the 15th, followed by the exact conjunction of Chiron and Neptune along with a fusing of Venus to Jupiter that showers good fortune and the ability to recognize it.

There’s a lot of good juju in this new moon!  All we have to do is take advantage of it.

Bill Clinton’s heart ailment: Chiron and the Sun

Bill Clinton underwent an angioplasty yesterday to open a clogged heart artery after experiencing chest pains.  Doctors say he is recovering normally and should be able to renew his normal activities soon.

However, I have some concerns about the health of the former president.  Bill Clinton has the Sun in Leo, the sign of development and expression of the Self, and he has Libra rising which is often called the Peacemaker.  Clinton can be quite charming with four planets in Libra plus Chiron, but he also has a rather nasty conjunction of Mars and Neptune sitting right on the ascendant which I wrote about two years ago.

The Sun in the birthchart represents the physical heart, and stressful aspects to the Sun can sometimes bring on heart ailments that then disappear after the planetary cycle is over.  When Saturn squared Clinton’s progressed Sun in late August/September of 2004, he underwent open heart surgery and has been free from problems until now.

At the moment, the combination of Chiron and Neptune, which have been conjunct in the sky for the past year or so and will continue to travel within three degrees of each other throughout the year, are now in an exact opposition (180 degrees) from Clinton’s Sun.  This is a stressful aspect that can bring about the need for emotional healing as well as physical healing.  The conjunction of Chiron and Neptune has been a rather intense experience for many people (you can read more about that planetary combination here) over the past year but now it will hit Clinton particularly hard.

Chiron’s role as the “Wounded Healer” facilitates the release of old psychic and emotional wounds so that we can become more fully healed.  We all walk around with old buried emotional issues that we don’t want to deal with, because we naturally move towards pleasure and away from pain.  Chiron cycles often bring up those buried wounds so that they can be experienced and then released, freeing us through greater self-awareness.  If we are unable or unwilling to face those old wounds as they are revealed to us, we can experience physical illness or ailments instead.

In January, Saturn (challenges, tests, depression) was just within a degree from a transit over all four angles in Clinton’s chart that will return later this year, and Pluto (death, rebirth, transformation) will be in a challenging aspect to those angles beginning this Spring and continuing over the next couple of years.  Next year Uranus, the planet of electricity and radical surprise, will begin to transit those points as well.  This is a huge time of change for Clinton and he will likely have to leave the spotlight in order to take care of rebalancing his inner world.  If he fails to do this, he could end up with serious problems later.

Avatar Blues

I haven’t yet seen the film Avatar so I can’t comment personally, but evidently some fans are reacting with depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film:

James Cameron’s completely immersive spectacle “Avatar” may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

On the fan forum site “Avatar Forums,” a topic thread entitled “Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible,” has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.

“I wasn’t depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy ,” Baghdassarian said. “But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don’t have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed.” …

“Ever since I went to see ‘Avatar’ I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na’vi made me want to be one of them. I can’t stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it,” Mike posted. “I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in ‘Avatar.’ “

So is it the film Avatar that is causing this depression and despair at the comparison between the idealized Avatar world and our own dysfunctional planet?  Or is it the intense planetary cycles that are occurring right now that are creating these moods and experiences, resulting in a longing for an experience of something more liberating and magical?

As I wrote last October, the conjunction of Chiron (wounding and healing) to Neptune (yearning for spiritual connection) in the sign of Aquarius (idealism and a desire for social justice and revolution) has been inspiring deep experiences of old grief to erupt into our conscious mind where they can be resolved and released.  Chiron and Neptune are nearing their exact conjunction for the first time since last summer.  With Chiron in Aquarius, the experience of wounding that Chiron reveals has its origin in the disappointment of our ideals and our yearnings for the perfect world – the Age of Aquarius of myth and legend.  The addition of Neptune adds a layer of delusion and magic as well as a powerful awareness of where we are disconnected from our souls.

We also have the second phase of the square of Saturn (depression and isolation) to Pluto (death and transformation) to contend with now, and the combination of these two planetary combinations can be quite intense, whether you see the film Avatar or not.

One poster in an Avatar forum wrote this:  ”When I woke up this morning after watching Avatar for the first time yesterday, the world seemed … gray. It was like my whole life, everything I’ve done and worked for, lost its meaning,” Hill wrote on the forum. “It just seems so … meaningless. I still don’t really see any reason to keep … doing things at all. I live in a dying world.”  This quote is so Saturn/Pluto – the world has lost its meaning and we are challenged to keep going and to find new meaning in our lives.

The purpose of these planetary cycles is not to make us miserable but to cause us to go deeper.  Life may have lost its meaning for us, but that’s because we are being urged to seek beyond the superficial; beyond the mundane and ordinary.  We don’t need to go to Pandora for this experience – the magic lies within.

News of Chiron from the Expo

Sorry, there will be no Astrological Musings Radio show today because I’m at the Body, Mind Spirit Expo in Raleigh this weekend.  Rich and I do these two shows a year where we showcase beautiful crystals and mineral specimens and some jewelry, and I do astrology and tarot readings.  They are a lot of fun and a great opportunity to meet some fabulous people.

Next week we’ll be talking about the big planetary events coming up in September.  Of course I’ll be writing more about those events as well so watch for that over the next week or so.  Tomorrow I’ll be writing the September Skywatch article (visit my website for your free subscription!) so I’ll repost something interesting for you, and then Tuesday I’ll get back to regular blogging.

It’s been interesting talking to other practitioners about what their clients are going through.  Everyone has the same report:  Clients are more emotional than usual.  I had several readings yesterday with people who couldn’t keep from crying – their emotions were so close to the surface that they could no longer hold them back.  This is the effect of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction – the soul (Neptune) is releasing the pain of our old wounds (Chiron) so that healing and real transformation can bring us back to an ecstatic connection with our true self.

Sometimes when clients are going through a Chiron cycle they will want me to help them “get rid of all of this pain.”  Sometimes the emotional pain is instead transmitted into physical pain.  But the purpose of a Chironic event is not to get rid of the pain, but to walk through the fire of the pain and come out on the other side.  That painful sensitivity, however it manifests, is coming from painful memories that need release.  They will not disappear on their own.  Sometimes all we need to do is to change the way we think about our experience, from fear and dread of these intense experiences to excitement over the shamanic process of transformation.

When we start to come out on the other side of these experiences it is indeed a thrill!

The Solar Eclipse unmasks the fact that racism is alive and well

The major force of the eclipse is now behind us, although its influence will linger for the next few days.  Eclipses are often associated with the “unmasking” of something that has been hidden – in the solar eclipse, the power of the lunar unconscious force unmasks that which has been hidden from the conscious mind.

So here we have the revelation that Professor Henry Louis Gates, arrested last Thursday (July 16) was arrested for trying to open the front door of his own home in Cambridge Massachusetts after a passer-by called the police to report a break-in. There is some debate over whether Dr. Gates provided identification when asked, but I know from personal experience with friends how sensitive these things can be, and I can just imagine how Dr. Gates would feel, returning from a long trip to China and probably exhausted, being confronted on his own front porch and asked for identification.

The eclipse fell about five degrees from the 8th house Mercury (communication) in the US chart, provoking discussion and inquiry (Mercury) about the hidden motives and power imbalances (8th house)  that are still alive in the US.  I sometimes think that it’s the African Americans who hold the cards now – we have a black president, everyone wants to be hip and talk like black people, and our most powerful cultural leaders are black.  But evidently there are still pockets of prejudice left to be cleansed.

The Chiron/Neptune conjunction (together with Jupiter) occurred within a degree from the Moon in the US chart.  The Moon in a national chart represents the heart of the people, and the Chiron/Neptune conjunction is serving to open up old wounds (Chiron) to be healed so that a more soulful experience (Neptune) can be achieved.  This is an essential process and one that should be welcomed so that real healing can occur and the past can once and for all be left to history.
