Conspiracy Corner: Swine flu hysteria continues

The swine flu began as a mysterious strain of flu, a mixture of swine, bird and human flu strains, just as Chiron and Neptune were moving closer towards their exact conjunction.  At the time I wrote of my suspicion over the sudden appearance of this hybrid strain of flu. After all, it wasn’t long ago that scientists recreated the Spanish flu virus that killed an estimated 50 million people back in 1918.

Flu epidemics provide billions of dollars of income for pharmaceutical companies and allow governments to step in and exercise control over a panicked citizenry.  And sure enough, it appears that the British government plans to immunize the entire British population:

The UK government has ordered enough vaccine to cover the entire population. GPs are being told to prepare for a nationwide vaccination campaign.

Peter Holden, the British Medical Association’s lead negotiator on swine flu, said GPs’ surgeries were ready for one of the biggest vaccination campaigns in almost 50 years.

read more here…

What a bonanza for the entire medical establishment in Britain. France has ordered 90 million doses, Germany 50 million, and the US has ordered almost $900 million worth of vaccine product from two pharmaceutical companies.

Evidently I’m not completely crazy.  My research uncovered this lost news story from back in February which reported that Baxter International “unintentionally” contaminated vaccine samples with Bird Flu virus.  The contaminated vaccines were sent to subcontractors in several European countries.  ”Coincidentally,” Baxter International began working with the World Health Organization to develop a vaccine against the Swine Flu in April.

Investors are salivating over the potential for stock gains of the companies involved.

Most alarming of all, the World Health Organization evidently has the authority to impose regulations regarding travel and vaccinations in the 194 countries who are signatories to its charter.  Even if you dismiss some of the more spectacular claims of the linked blog, the significance of this one item is incontrovertible.

The astrological connections here are interesting.  First we have Pluto having swept into Capricorn, where not only are the structures that provide the foundation of our life being destroyed and transformed but we also have the tendency for realignments of power (Pluto) in those structures (Capricorn).  Next, the conjunction of Chiron (health) and Neptune (vaccines), which bring about a means for the transfer of more and more power from the individual (Uranus) to the state (Saturn), which reflects the opposition of Saturn to Uranus.

In any event, let’s stay awake, people.  Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.

Song for Saturn in Virgo

In case the Chiron/Neptune conjunction is getting you down, here is some comic relief from Al Yankovic complete with lyrics.  I found this on the Astrology Weekly forum, and the poster there included the lyrics.  Some of the most accurate Saturn in Virgo lyrics include these pungent lines:

Think you’re really righteous? Think you’re pure in heart?

Well, I know I’m a million times as humble as thou art.

This is one of Al’s all-time classics. Unfortunately it can’t be embedded, so watch it here.

Words of wisdom from Barbara Hand Clow

Barbara Hand Clow was one of the first astrologers to identify the wounding and healing process of Chiron that I work with in my own practice, and I owe her and her excellent work a great deal.  She is doing some groundbreaking work now that some may find a bit out there, but I suspect in a few years we’ll see that she was right all along, just as she was 30 years ago.

Here’s an excerpt from something she wrote about the Chiron/Neptune conjunction that we’re in the middle of right now.  You can read more about it on her site.

We astrologers talk on and on about Neptune as a guide for connecting with spirit worlds. It has become a cliché, and most people just don’t think about what that means. So, I will attempt to find other words to describe Neptune’s influence. Most of the time, we are separated out from all-that-is, the timeless energy fields of our cosmic bodies. We are caught in time and place, and then once in awhile we experience a breakthrough into all-that-is-a peak experience. When this happens, the boundaries around our separated selves melt, and we experience “oneness” or enlightenment. Children frequently exist in oneness-especially infants-but then painful experiences cause them to close up and separate from divine consciousness. While we are alive, Chiron’s transits-usually by conjunction, square, and opposition-erode the boundaries of the separated self by means of piercing stabs into deep inner wounds. When these wounds occurred in this life or past lives, we erected boundaries around the wounds, yet the very energy that could reconnect us with spirit-Neptune-is locked out. So, Chiron and Neptune working together can erode these boundaries that block cosmic fusion. In other words, accessing pain sometimes opens spiritual connection, and this is what we resist the most.

Jupiter joins the Summer Retrogrades

I’ll begin by quoting myself:

When planets are retrograde, their influence becomes more subtle; more internalized. It can be more difficult to achieve momentum in the areas over which the planet presides. It may be necessary to apply a greater conscious intention to areas of life ruled by that planet. When all three outer planets retrograde at once we are often forced to perfect a part of our life that has been neglected and which is holding us back from evolving as individuals.

Jupiter turned retrograde yesterday, joining Chiron, Neptune and Pluto all of whom are traveling backward in their apparent path as observed from earth.  Chiron and Neptune changed direction at the end of June, and Jupiter moved slightly beyond the conjunction before turning retrograde yesterday.

Jupiter will catch up with Neptune first, in July 9th, and for the next few weeks these planets will continue to dance together in a celebration of the evolution of the soul and an expansive opening to creative inspiration.  That’s the good news.  The bad news is that this same blissful opening of the soul can also open up the temptation of escapist behavior, addictions, and illusions if we venture too far into the world of rose-colored glasses without remaining grounded on Planet Earth.

Chiron has not gone far, and remains within one degree of Jupiter and Chiron which is certainly close enough to add its voice of wisdom to the mix.  Chiron asks where in our lives are we harboring painful memories or ill-will that needs to be released in order for the soul to continue its journey towards evolution.

Readings for clients have been very interesting under this triple conjunction.  Several people in one day were experiencing longer mourning periods than they felt was appropriate after losing several people that were important to them over the past few years. Some people are suddenly remembering incidents that occurred years ago, but which suddenly seem important.  Other practitioners are telling me that their clients are asking, “What should I be doing with my life?”  It’s as though we have all suddenly awoken to the fact that we are spiritual beings wearing earthly clothing.

The emotional pain that we may be feeling is an important part of the cleansing process and can’t be avoided under Chiron’s influence.  It is the clearing of the emotional debris that facilitates our ability to shift into a new way of living in the world in true peace and bliss, with an experience of real love that comes from within.

It will be the end of July before Jupiter begins to retrograde away from Chiron and Neptune, and by then Uranus will have turned retrograde (Uranus retrogrades on July 2).  Uranus has slowed down as it prepares to turn retrograde, and it is at its most powerful now, urging us to pursue freedom, liberty and the happiness that comes from living an authentic life.

This is a powerful combination of planetary energies!

Full Moon in Sagittarius

Venus entered Taurus on Friday. Taurus is one of the signs ruled by Venus (the other is Libra), and for the next month or so we are governed by a love of fine and beautiful things and inspired by creative beauty. This is not a particularly good time to go on a diet, because Taurus loves fine food and Venus can be particularly self-indulgent in the signs of its rulership.

Mars is also in Taurus now, and our drive and desire (Mars) is for stability, peace and pleasure (Taurus). This is a very sensual combination, and Venus is aligned with Mars for much of the month, moving into a conjunction which peaks on the 21st. With Venus and Mars conjunct for much of the month, our social life is likely to be energized and even the homebodies among us will have a stronger desire for interaction with others.

This will be particularly true at the time of the Full Moon in playful Sagittarius on June 7 at 2:12 pm EDT, although the Sagittarius Moon will be squared by Saturn, so purpose and intention will be rewarded here. This Full Moon is the perfect time for group ritual or celebration in which a spiritual purpose combines with a structure and focused plan in a social gathering.

In Sagittarius the Moon gives us a longing for greater understanding of our world and a desire for experiences that expand us, but Saturn seeks to confine us and instill discipline and a desire to work hard and achieve success. This is a somewhat complicated combination of planets that will be best served in a balancing act that includes both structure and freedom.

Mercury is in a challenging square to the triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune for the next few days (until around the 12th of June), and during this time the call of our soul (Chiron/Neptune) may not jive exactly with the thoughts in our head (Mercury).  Don’t be surprised if you are more emotional than usual now, but this is a fabulous time to take note of messages in your dreams, to get creative, to explore philosophy, to learn more about the spiritual realms.

This Full Moon is known in Algonquin folklore as the Strawberry Moon, although here in North Carolina the strawberries have been out for quite some time.  It is also called the Rose Moon in Europe.

Venus is moving into a trine to Pluto which is already in effect at the time of the Full Moon but which peaks on June 8th, a short-lived but powerful influence on our relationships. Romantic feelings are intensified now, and with them the opportunity to deepen our relationships and find a new level on which to communicate.

Abortion doc murder: painful reminder of the abortion issue

With the furor over gay marriage and health care reform taking precedence over the past few years, the battle over abortion has faded into the backdrop of American society.  But just as the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune is culminating, the murder of one of the few doctors who performed late term abortions as he worshipped in his church is bringing the abortion discussion back into the public consciousness.

Jupiter is the planet that gives us the desire to play God.  Jupiter, you may remember, was King of the Gods, and his exuberance and confidence often gives us the feeling that we ARE King of the Gods.  Jupiter is the planet of righteousness and judgement; the dispenser of laws and the creator of theology.  In the Judeo-Christian mythology, Jupiter is Yahweh, the harsh god of justice, where Neptune is Jesus, the god of compassion and love. (The original Jesus bears very little resemblance to the Jesus of the militant right wing and Christian terrorists.)

The addition of Jupiter to the Chiron/Neptune mix is very visible in the murder of George Tiller on May 31st. The Chiron/Neptune conjunction is reaching down into the soul and exposing old wounds so that they can be healed, and this can happen on a global level, a national level, a family level and as individuals.

Tiller’s murderer, Scott Roeder (born 2/25/58, Merriam Kansas, time unknown) was a member of several anti-government and militant anti-abortion groups.  Those who knew him said that he believed murder to protect the unborn was justifiable homicide.  Roeder’s birthchart shows the Sun conjunct Mercury in sensitive Pisces.  Pisces is known as the sign of the Saint and the Sinner, because its tendency to blur the boundaries of reality can be channeled into a spiritual life or a life of escapism.

In any case, the sense of Self is often weak in those with the Sun in Pisces; they often prefer to blend in with the people around them.  This is exacerbated by the conjunction of the Sun to Mercury, which doubles the shapeshifting qualities of Pisces and can create a guile that is very effective.  Rupert Murdoch has the Sun conjunct Mercury in Pisces and he has used this ability to adapt to his environment to very successful ends.

In Roeder’s chart, the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury is opposed by Pluto, the lord of death and transformation.  In opposition to the Sun, Pluto often denotes a childhood of abuse of some kind and a pattern of compulsive behavior.  In a person who is on a path of self-understanding, these patterns can be broken and the power issues balanced internally.  But in a person who is motivated solely by instincts and reaction, the challenging aspect of Pluto becomes the victim who becomes the perpetrator.

Often in a heinous crime such as this we find a transit of Jupiter, giving the individual the confidence to commit a crime that has long been a fantasy.  In Roeder’s case, Jupiter along with Chiron and Neptune all made a trine to Roeder’s progressed Sun.  The fact that the murder took place in a church leads one to think that Roeder likely fancied himself executing the Will of God under Jupiter’s influence.  With the confidence of Jupiter as an ally and with Yahweh’s “eye for an eye” proclamation as his inspiration, Roeder made his move.

Chiron and Neptune turn retrograde

Neptune retrogrades around midnight tonight EDT, and Chiron follows on Friday.  These two planets have been linked since last summer although their tightest connection occurred this week.  (You can find other articles on the Chiron/Neptune conjunction here.)

The outer planets are considered the “transformational” planets because they create big change at the foundational level.  They also retrograde once a year, so it is not an unusual event to have Chiron and Neptune turning retrograde.  What makes this event more significant is that Chiron and Neptune are turning retrograde just at the point where they are as close to a conjunction (14 minutes apart) as they will be until they unite next February, and they are both changing direction on the same day.

When planets turn retrograde (meaning they appear to move backward from our perspective on Earth) their apparent motion slows down to a crawl in preparation for their retrograde turn and it is at these times, along with the slowdown before they change direction to move forward again, that their influence is at its most powerful.

When transiting planets are retrograde they urge us to look back and experience the matters of that planet on a more internal level.  The externalized experiences of our life become less important than the inner ones, so with Neptune retrograde we are drawn more into a personal relationship with spirituality and a practice that connects us more soulfully into our lives.  When Chiron is retrograde we have greater access to our inner emotional experiences.  Chiron encourages us to feel, feel, feel – and often forces the issue by pulling our blinders off where necessary to confront something painful within us.  With Chiron retrograde this experience becomes more personal and more internalized.

Any time Neptune is involved things can get confusing; Neptune is the planet of illusion and confusion as well as spiritual yearning.  It’s hard to define situations when Neptune is at work, and this is true as Chiron and Neptune continue to dance together over the next couple of months.  On a personal level this seems to be manifesting for some people as a call to the soul – a yearning to break free of old ways of living that are not authentic for the person we have become.  For some there has been the eruption of old painful experiences that need to be healed, such as the scandalin Ireland over the abuse of the reform school children.

As these two planets retrograde their influence will gradually wane as they move farther and farther apart but Chiron, Neptune and Jupiter will continue to be tightly conjunct until the beginning of August.  This is a fabulous planetary event for anyone on a spiritual path or a path of self-knowledge, because these planets work on a soul level to connect us deeply to the Divine Self within as well as outside of ourselves.

Sure, it’s not easy, but what worthwhile thing is?!

Sunday Poetry for the New Moon Jupiter/Chiron/Neptune conjunction

Love Said to Me

by Shahram Shiva

I worship the moon.
Tell me of the soft glow of a
candle light
and the sweetness of my moon.

Don’t talk about sorrow,
tell me of that treasure,
hidden if it is to you,
then just remain silent.

Last night
I lost my grip on reality
and welcomed insanity.
Love
saw me and said,
I showed up.
Wipe your tears
and be silent.

I said, O Love
I am frightened,
but it’s not you.
Love said to me,
there is nothing that is not me.
be silent.

I will whisper secrets in your ear
just nod yes
and be silent.

A soul moon
appeared in the path of my heart.
How precious is this journey.

I said, O Love
what kind of moon is this?
Love said to me,
this is not for you to question.
be silent.

I said, O Love
what kind of face is this,
angelic, or human?
Love said to me,
this is beyond anything that you know.
Be silent.

I said, please reveal this to me
I am dying in anticipation.
Love said to me,
that is where I want you:
Always on the edge,
be silent.
You dwell in this hall of
images and illusions,
leave this house now
and be silent.

I said, O Love,
tell me this:
Does the Lord know you are
treating me this way?
Love said to me,
yes He does,
just be totally…
totally… silent

Astrological Commentary:

The New Moon in Gemini instills us with a deep desire to talk about our experiences – to make themselves known, and to process them through the conscious mind.

The first stanza of this poem, ”I worship the moon. Tell me of the soft glow of a candle light and the sweetness of my moon,” reflects the sweet hopefulness of the combination of Jupiter and Neptune  - the longing (Neptune) for a divine experience combined with Jupiter’s positive expression of hope and faith.

“Don’t talk about sorrow, tell me of that treasure, hidden if it is to you, then just remain silent,” we begin to see the emergence of Chiron which experiences the sorrow of longing, but then combines with Neptune to probe beneath the obvious to find that which is hidden, and to experience it in Neptune’s deep contemplation.

“Last night I lost my grip on reality and welcomed insanity. Love saw me and said, I showed up. Wipe your tears and be silent.”  Chiron impels us to release the hold on what we think is structured reality to allow the true experience of our inner soul to make itself known.  Jupiter grants the faith to realize that in the midst of our psychic pain, the peace of Neptune lies within.

“I said, O Love I am frightened, but it’s not you. Love said to me, there is nothing that is not me. be silent.”  Again, we feel the fear under Chiron’s tutelage, but Jupiter give us faith and Neptune the experience of deep silence and communion with pure Love.

“I said, please reveal this to me I am dying in anticipation. Love said to me, that is where I want you: Always on the edge, be silent. You dwell in this hall of images and illusions, leave this house now and be silent.”  We are so impatient for perfect peace and for the end of all suffering (Neptune).  Yet perfect peace comes from the surrender of desire, even at the edge of realization.  We must release every drop of attachment to the process and desire to flee from our human consciousness (Chiron),

In the silence of the NOW, the total silence where Love can fill the gaps of experience, that is where the peace of knowing lies.

“Very bad mercury retrograde”

I had to laugh when I was looking at the stats and found that several people used this phrase to find this site.  I’ve had quite a few emails complaining about the intensity of this Mercury retrograde, and if the past week has been super-intense for you you’re not alone.

This Jupiter/Chiron/Neptune conjunction is kicking some serious butt, and ever since Mercury retrograded back into Taurus it’s been approaching a square to the triple conjunction.  So not only are we having communication difficulties, these difficulties are bringing up a host of other issues at the same time.  It doesn’t help that both Chiron and Neptune are slowing down as they prepare to change direction in a few days and that intensifies their effect.

Chiron makes it difficult to hide from ourselves, and Neptune makes it difficult to see things clearly. It’s a complicated combination of planets, and the square to Mercury challenges our ability to intellectualize and clarify the events in our lives.  There IS a purpose to all of this madness – to encourage us to live in truth and become ever more aware of the spiritual underpinnings of our lives.  Not always an easy thing to do on Planet Earth!

Mercury changes direction on May 31 which will bring some relief, but it will then move into position to square Chiron and Neptune once more on June 9.  This is serious soul work time, and that is never easy.

The Dark Night of the Soul

dark night of the soulThis article was originally posted in September of 2006 when Saturn and Neptune were in opposition.  Many of my clients have been referring to a “dark night of the soul” resulting from the Chiron/Neptune conjunction so I thought it might be useful to repost it.

While I was on vacation I happened on a radio interview with Andrew Harvey, a mystic and Shakespearean scholar who believes as many do that the earth is heading for some troubled times. I was very impressed by the depth of his commitment to the spiritual life and his eloquence in describing the twists and turns that are required on the path to becoming one with the divine.

Harvey’s recent book is entitled The Sun at Midnight: A Memoir of the Dark Night , written about his long journey through the dark night of the soul. In the opposition from Saturn to Neptune, many of us are experiencing such a “dark night” in the form of the ending (Saturn) of our illusions (Neptune). Although Pluto is now associated with death and the principle of rebirth, before Pluto was discovered Saturn ruled over death’s domain. Death under Saturn is a cold hard ending as we come face to face with the fragility of our spiritual connections under Neptune. Although Saturn is a stern teacher, the rewards are great and when we face the hard lessons that Saturn brings we are given great rewards. In its opposition to Neptune, adopting or deepening the discipline (Saturn) of a spiritual practice (Neptune) will help to facilitate the progression of our cosmic education.

But there is a deeper death in Harvey’s writings: the death and regeneration that we associate with Pluto. The reclassification of Pluto into a new category along with Ceres and now Eris adds a new complexity to our concept of this transformation that we may not yet have the capacity to understand. Perhaps there is a clue in Harvey’s words from an interview he gave in San Francisco last year:

[Regarding St. John's "night of the senses" and "night of the soul"] This first dark night purifies all of the senses so that they can become the vehicle of the inner divine self. This first dark night is extreme, but it’s not as extreme as the second dark night. It’s a purification that enables the ordinary senses to start registering the divine world. Through devotion, through meditation, through intense mystical practice, you start to see the divine light. At first it just flashes, and then when the process is complete, you have an overwhelming experience in which you see the entire creation as a manifestation of the light, and your consciousness is one with that. This is not enlightenment. This begins what is called the state of illumination. Although the senses are purified, and although they’re able now to register the divinity of the world, the ego is still subtly present. So there has to be a second death on the path, which is the death of the personal identity. . . .

The entire world is now going through a massive crucifixion on all levels. It’s going through an environmental crucifixion — hundreds of species are vanishing every month. It’s going through a personal crucifixion. There are two billion people living on less than a dollar a day. It’s going through a crucifixion of all the patriarchal systems — look at Enron and what it has shown us about Corporate America. Look at the Catholic Churches’ scandals of pedophilia and what it shows us about authority. Look at the growing disillusionment of politicians of all kinds. All of the systems are being exposed as illusory and as fantasy ridden — as deeply corrupt and exploitative.

There’s another kind of crucifixion going on — crucifixion of purpose and hope. Everybody is totally bewildered. They know that the world is potentially on the brink of total apocalypse. There’s a tremendous danger that as people wake up to the horror of what is going on, they will run into political extremism or into fundamentalism of one kind or another. So it’s extremely important that the wisdom of the dark night gets across because if people understand the necessity for this crucifixion, and understand that it’s preparing the resurrection and the birth and an empowerment, then they will be prepared to go through it without fear — or without too much fear — trusting in the logic of the divine transformation.

See, the power that is doing this to us is coming towards us simultaneously with terrifying destruction and extreme grace and prosperity [emphasis added]. The destruction is, in fact, a form of that extreme grace. It’s quite clear that humanity is now terminally ill, and can only be transfigured by a totally shocking revelation of its shadow side. And this is what we’re living through, these shadow sides exploding in every direction because we have done nothing but betray the sacred in us.

We have lacerated the sacred in others. We have betrayed the sacred in an orgy of fundamentalism. We have brutalized the sacred in nature. We are now terminally destructive. . . .

You can lose hope. But if you know the wisdom of the dark night, then you are looking out for protection. You’re aware that through this terror, protection will be given. This is the universal testimony. They mystics have gone through this process. It’s the testimony of Rumi. It’s the testimony of the great shamans. It’s the testimony of St. John of the Cross, and it’s the testimony that I gave in this book. And it’s, of course, the testimony of Bede Griffiths. You are given tremendous divine protection, because as the human is being destroyed, the divine consciousness comes up. So one side of you is being annihilated, but the other side is stronger than ever in the ashes. So great dreams will come and light will become more and more vibrant. The divinity of life will become more and more naked to you. Miracles will take place to protect you. To anybody who comes to this path, the divine is both extremely ferocious and extremely tender. Ferocious to destroy the illusions, but tender to give the human being the courage to hang in there and do the work.

It’s becoming more and more clear to me that the newly tripartite nature of Pluto embodies the symbolism of this process: Eris creates the discord and strife that begins the death of the ego under Pluto, and Ceres presides over our emergence from the underworld and the regeneration of our lives.
