The power of 1962

aquarius stelliumThis image is an actual gift basket that can be purchased hereEverywhere I look these days I am reminded of 1962. This year marks the 50th anniversary of 1962, so it is an important anniversary and coincides with the Chiron Return.

First I wrote a blog post about Demi Moore, born in 1962. A commenter wrote that actress Janine Turner was also born in 1962, and I followed up with a comment of other major stars born in 1962: Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, Matthew Broderick, Ralph Fiennes, Steve Carell, Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez, John Hannah (in the UK), Cary Elwes, Joan Cusack, Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Paula Abdul, Eddie Izzard (Izzard is one of the AquaStell people born in February that year with seven planets and luminaries in Aquarius), Jon Bon Jovi, Rosie O’Donnell, John Stewart, Andrew Braugher.

This is the 50th anniversary of some of the major iconic bands from the 1960s, including the Rolling Stones and the Beach Boys, two very different bands that had a powerful impact on pop culture.

Then yesterday I did a reading for an Aquastell client, a relatively rare event in my practice.

And today I find that it’s the 50th anniversary of my favorite book as a child: A Wrinkle in Time. (I wrote about that book here.)

In early 1962 there was a lineup of Aquarius planets that at one point featured seven planets within 16 degrees of Aquarius including the Aquarius New Moon on February 5th.  Aquarius is the sign of innovation and urges a departure from that which has been known before.  There was likely an explosion of creative intelligence that erupted during this “Grand Conjunction and although Uranus and Pluto were not yet within range of their conjunction (that didn’t occur until Uranus entered Virgo later in 1962) I believe that the stellium may have stimulated that breakthrough that opened the door for the changes that occurred over the next five years as Uranus and Pluto aligned in Virgo.

These Aquastell people (and others born in 1961-1963) are in their Chiron return now.  Because Chiron works on the emotional body and Aquarian types tend to be less comfortable in the emotional realm, the Chiron return can have a variety of manifestations.  Generally, though, a clearing of emotional debris is required in order to achieve the energetic liberation that Aquarius promotes, and the Chiron Return is the perfect time for this to occur.

There has been just one other lineup of seven planets since then: in January 1994  seven planets lined up in Capricorn.  This stellium does not seem to have generated many stars, other than Justin Bieber the number of stars born in that year is fairly low.

The next planet pileup won’t occur until June 2032 when seven planets will conjoin in Gemini.

An astrologer looks at 50

Chiron ReturnArt borrowed from the New Moon JournalIt’s good to see Huffington Post carrying some serious astrology articles like this one (not that our friend Michael Lutin, HuffPo’s usual astrological source, isn’t serious although he is quite entertaining).

Astrologer Virginia Bell has a good article on the Chiron Return as the turning point at age 50 (technically the Chiron Return occurs at age 51, but let’s not quibble).  I particularly love this paragraph:

At our Chiron Return we have the power to change our story and it is not unusual for our life to take off in a new direction. The period leading up to the Chiron Return, in our late forties, is significant as ideas, plans, and projects are seeded at this time. Located between the orbit of Saturn and Uranus, Chiron is frequently described as a bridge. Often a teacher or mentor appears at this time to act as a bridge or catalyst from one life to another.

I wrote about this on my Facebook page – the fact that the role of mentor is an aspect of Chiron that often gets lost when we think of him solely as the Wounded Healer.  I have found that it is not correct that Chiron’s Wound doesn’t heal – as we age, particularly as we age through the Chiron Return, the wounds CAN heal.  As the wounds heal, the energy that they hold are replaced by a wisdom that goes deep into the soul and at that point we may take on the role as teacher or mentor ourselves.

Today is my birthday, and as many of you know I am in the middle of my Saturn Return right now which means that the Sun conjoins Saturn in the sky as it conjoins my own natal Sun/Saturn conjunction, embedding the combination of the Sun and Saturn in my Solar Return chart.  This suggests there is a years of hard work and productivity ahead and that has certainly been the focus of my life for the past two weeks.

Chiron serves as the bridge from the discipline and structure of Saturn to the transformational outer planets and assists in the healing and evolution of the soul.  It’s great to see him getting some good press in the mainstream media!  Thanks to the Astrococktail news service for the article link.

More on rage as Mars turns direct

rageWe have been seeing an unbelievable number of high speed car chases and road rage incidents in our local paper, as I wrote earlier, and it seems as though every day there’s another shooting from someone angry at something.  A search of Google news reveals that it’s not just in our area that people are chasing and shooting each other, and now an Ohio State University worker has killed a colleague and himself over a poor work evaluation.  The gunman was 51, the age at which Chiron returns to its place in our birthcharts and stimulates a healing crisis that is often emotional as well as physical. With Chiron and Neptune conjoined in the sky, that Chiron return for this age group is packing a major wallop.

But much of the fault for the heightened rage right now belongs with Mars which has slowed down to a standstill in preparation for its change of direction tomorrow at the zero degree point of Leo, where it is very powerful and expressive. Mars is the planet that presides over the aggressive instinct, but also our ability to become inspired and excited about our lives.  It energizes us, fuels us to achieve our goals, and instills us with enthusiasm and passion.  So Mars has a very positive place in our lives, but when thwarted and distorted it can become a difficult enemy.

If you find you are having trouble right now with anger or depression (depression is often the result of a thwarted Mars, or rage turned inwards) this is an excellent time to channel Mars in a positive way.  Kickboxing, lifting heavy things (either at the gym or in the garden), running – doing something to release any pent-up energy in productive ways.

It’s not a good time to engage in confrontation, but as soon as Mars turns direct tomorrow it will begin to travel more quickly and its effect will be greatly minimized.

Morrisey Hospitalized After Collapsing on Stage

Singer-songwriter Morrissey collapsed on stage last night and was rushed to the hospital with an unidentified respiratory ailment.
Morrissey (May 22, 1959, time unknown, Lancashire England) is a complicated personality astrologically, with a lighthearted Gemini Sun squared by Pluto, the god of death.  He has said that he began taking prescription drugs as a teenager to combat the depression that often accompanies this kind of planetary combination, and he is known in the British press as the Pope of Mope.
He is also well-known for his ambivalent sexuality. Pluto is the planet of intense emotional experiences, and this encompasses the experience of sexuality which draws us into the underworld where we may feel we have lost control.  This conflict between Pluto’s darkness and the lighthearted Gemini Sun and the fear of being overpowered is exemplified in this lyric from the song “Handsome Devil”: “And when we’re in your scholarly room, who will swallow whom?”
Gemini rules breathing, and that square from Pluto in the natal chart can create breathing difficulties.  Morrissey also has a square from Jupiter in Scorpio, which has a tendency towards intensity anyway, to Chiron (the Wounded Healer archetype). This aspect bestows a powerful sense of social justice and a need to feel important and that one was put on the Earth for an important reason.  It also expands (Jupiter) the requirement by Chiron that undigested emotional material be released and healed, so transits to these points can create health problems that arise from emotional and psychological disconnects.
Morrissey’s Moon is involved in this combination as well; depending on the time he was born, his Moon either conjoins Jupiter in Scorpio and squares Chiron (if he is born before noon)  which would create a fair amount of emotional sensitivity, or if he is born in the afternoon his Moon is in the early degrees of Sagittarius where it is squared by Pluto, another challenging dynamic that can add to the feeling of being overwhelmed.
In any event, as we get older our unresolved psychological issues begin to lodge themselves in the body where they lurk until we go through a holistic process of healing the body, mind and spirit.  The Triple Conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune that we have seen in the sky this year formed an exact square to Morrissey’s Jupiter for the first time in February of 2009, when he canceled concert dates on his US tour.  The second square of the Triple Conjunction to Jupiter in his chart took place on May 29, the day that he canceled a series of concerts in Britain.
Morrissey’s Chiron Return begins next year – this is the time at around age 51 when Chiron in the sky returns to the same degree as it occupies in the birthchart so he is likely to continue to experience health problems unless he seeks healing in the emotional and spiritual realm as well as the physical.
