RIP Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs astrologySteve Jobs, former head of Apple Computing, died yesterday after battling pancreatic cancer since 2004.  He was 56 years old.

I profiled Mr. Jobs back in 2009:

Jobs has an interesting chart with the Sun in Pisces. Pisces is the sign of spirituality and transcending the boundaries of ordinary physical reality.  Pisces types are typically creative, inspirational, easygoing and meditative with a thirst for a spiritual experience.  They are also emotional and can be quite sensitive.  After dropping out of college, Jobs spent some time in 1974 backpacking through India, studying meditation and experimenting with psychedelic drugs.

Jupiter (optimism and confidence) is conjunct Uranus (innovation and radical behavior) in Jobs’ chart, signifying a person with a deeply restless nature, but also an innate ability to innovate and create.  Mars (the planet that defines how we assert our will and express our aggressive instinct) in his chart is in Aries, the sign which it rules.  That is an extremely forceful place for Mars to be; yet Jobs is a sensitive and easygoing Pisces.

Mars is afflicted in his chart: it is opposed by Neptune, the ruler of Pisces and a very watery planet – you know what happens when you pour a bucket of water (Neptune) over fire (Mars), the fire is likely to go out.  Mars is also in a challenging aspect to the Jupiter/Uranus combination, which shows that Jobs can have a very short fuse, but he may not, with his strongly Piscean nature, be able to release that fiery expression very easily.

It is said of Steve Jobs that he makes his own rules, which we can see in the Mars (drive) square to Jupiter/Uranus (radical behavior), and that is can be a temperamental manager which we can see in the Mars in Aries aggression opposed by Neptune’s martyrdom and dislike of conflict.

I have found that what I call “Mars problems” are very common in the charts of people with health problems.  When the aggressive instinct (which includes our ability to express our needs, to assert ourselves, and to express anger appropriately) is blocked, that fire energy is left without an appropriate outlet and often discharges within the body’s energy system, leading to a variety of health problems.

Since 2004 when Jobs first had a “neuroendocrine” tumor in the pancreas removed, he has had a series of planetary transits affecting this Mars complex in his chart.  First transiting Chiron (wounding and healing) ran across all of the planets in the complex beginning in June of 2003 (the tumor was discovered in October of that year).  Then Saturn (hardship and disappointment) in 2004 and 2005 (the tumor was removed in July of 2004 after a 9-month battle to find an alternative solution), accompanied by Uranus (radical and restless change) which transited the Ascendant and Sun in Jobs’s chart, stirring the emotional pot and creating the need to alter the status quo.  The combination of Uranus restlessness and Saturn restriction can evoke a frustration that implodes into the physical body if not properly expressed outwardly.

Mr. Jobs announced his retirement from Apple on August 24, 2011.  It’s interesting that at this time he had just had a Progressed New Moon, where the Sun and Moon conjoin in the progressed chart, a few weeks prior to the announcement.  Any New Moon configuration in the birthchart or progressed chart  is usually a dramatic period of renewal with a new focus.   In addition, transiting Pluto, planet of death and renewal, made a harmonious sextile to his natal Sun which likely served as an aid to the transition that was to come.

I find death charts very interesting because we rarely find what we expect.  We are accustomed to thinking of the more challenging aspects of Pluto and Saturn as the planets of death because they bring such dramatic and sometimes terrible experiences into our lives, but death is not always a terrible thing.  We often find Jupiter present in its role as the Great Liberator, and in Mr. Jobs’ chart we find several significant and harmonious planetary cycles.

On the day of Mr. Jobs’ death transiting Chiron, the planet that brings old wounds to the surface so that they can be healed and and released, was in an exact harmonious sextile to his progressed Sun, providing the ultimate release from pain and illness.  In addition, transiting Neptune (planet of creativity and spiritual transcendence) was in an exact harmonious trine to Neptune in the chart.  I hope that this powerful Neptunian influence aided Mr. Jobs in a “good death” – a transcendence from form into non-form with a minimum of fear and stress.

Mr. Jobs was not only an inspiring leader, but he evidently possessed a deep and rare wisdom.  I’d like to leave you with this quote that I used in a Sunday Inspiration post earlier this year:

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

What’s got into Serena Williams?

Tennis legend Serena Williams (9/26/1981, unverified time of 8:26 pm in Saginaw, MI) gave a referee a piece of her mind on Saturday, costing her the game and the match.  This sudden outburst is considered out of character for Serena, who rarely makes the news outside of the sports section.

This can be explained partially by her astrology chart and the fact that Serena has five planets in the peaceloving sign of Libra:  the Sun, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto and Mercury.  But she’s not all peace, love and harmony – that Pluto/Mercury conjunction gives her plenty of verbal (Mercury) power (Pluto) and I suspect that she’s not afraid to use it.  Her Virgo Moon gives her a natural reticence and modesty, but this conflicts with a powerful Mars in the competitive sign of Leo, revealing her intense drive (Mars) to win (Leo). Still, that Virgo Moon is typically respectful of rules and dislikes rocking the boat and ESPN sports analyst Mary Carillo said, “This was an aberration, I’ve never seen her like that.”

It’s not surprising that Serena is touchier these days than usual.  Transiting Chiron, the planet that brings up all of our old wounds and fears, is making a square to Chiron in her natal chart. This is a challenging planetary event that removes the protective band-aids that we use to cover up our insecurities and old wounds of the psyche.

She has also had a major transit of Pluto making a square to her Sun.  Although that cycle is taking a breather, she has likely been going through some rather intense changes in her professional and personal life.

On the day of the incident, transiting Mars was forming an exact square to Saturn in Serena’s chart.  Saturn often represents the father – the stern taskmaster that tells us over and over again that we’re not good enough.  I suspect that the voice of the referee, even though she was female, brought up something deep and old for Serena, who was already sensitized by the transiting square of Chiron, and goaded by Mars, the god of war,she erupted with anger.

The final phase of the Chiron cycle will end in late April, and Serena will have plenty of Mars transits between now and then.  Hopefully she will resolve some of her issues off the courts so that her career can continue its amazing trajectory.

News of Chiron from the Expo

Sorry, there will be no Astrological Musings Radio show today because I’m at the Body, Mind Spirit Expo in Raleigh this weekend.  Rich and I do these two shows a year where we showcase beautiful crystals and mineral specimens and some jewelry, and I do astrology and tarot readings.  They are a lot of fun and a great opportunity to meet some fabulous people.

Next week we’ll be talking about the big planetary events coming up in September.  Of course I’ll be writing more about those events as well so watch for that over the next week or so.  Tomorrow I’ll be writing the September Skywatch article (visit my website for your free subscription!) so I’ll repost something interesting for you, and then Tuesday I’ll get back to regular blogging.

It’s been interesting talking to other practitioners about what their clients are going through.  Everyone has the same report:  Clients are more emotional than usual.  I had several readings yesterday with people who couldn’t keep from crying – their emotions were so close to the surface that they could no longer hold them back.  This is the effect of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction – the soul (Neptune) is releasing the pain of our old wounds (Chiron) so that healing and real transformation can bring us back to an ecstatic connection with our true self.

Sometimes when clients are going through a Chiron cycle they will want me to help them “get rid of all of this pain.”  Sometimes the emotional pain is instead transmitted into physical pain.  But the purpose of a Chironic event is not to get rid of the pain, but to walk through the fire of the pain and come out on the other side.  That painful sensitivity, however it manifests, is coming from painful memories that need release.  They will not disappear on their own.  Sometimes all we need to do is to change the way we think about our experience, from fear and dread of these intense experiences to excitement over the shamanic process of transformation.

When we start to come out on the other side of these experiences it is indeed a thrill!

Hillary Clinton and the New Moon chart

Reports are mixed as to whether Hillary Clinton will end her campaign after the last two primaries today. On Countdown last night:

Senator Hillary Clinton appears on the verge of suspending her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, and endorsing Senator Barack Obama. That, the widespread reading of the electoral tea leaves today, after a tidal wave of separate reports that add up to the end, in sight, probably by tomorrow night. In our fifth story on the Countdown — the components: She has reportedly personally urged her top backers and financial donors to attend her speech in New York tomorrow night. She reportedly told Senator Obama last night that their staffs should begin to bargain over what to do after Tuesday. Her official schedule, after a morning speech in Washington on Wednesday, is blank…And, perhaps most saliently, her staff has reportedly been urged to turn in all of their expense reports and receipts, before the end of this week. Now the details of what is being perceived as: the final Countdown.

Today would be a beautiful time astrologically for Senator Clinton to end her arguably failed race for the nomination. The New Moon, a time of new beginnings, forms a harmonious aspect (sextile) to the conjunction in her chart of Mars and Pluto in Leo that fuels her dogged determination and refusal to say no.

The New Moon is also very close to a conjunction to Mrs. Clinton’s progressed Moon, stimulating within her a flowering of emotional awareness and an inspiration to recreate herself in some way.

Mrs. Clinton’s natal Saturn is the subject of several powerful aspects right now. Saturn in the chart shows where we build our structures, and where we find ourselves alone creating the business of our lives. Mercury, traveling retrograde at the moment, forms a sextile to Saturn in Clinton’s chart so the Winged Messenger (Mercury) is adding a note of flexibility to her ability to put her plans (Saturn) in motion. In addition, transiting Jupiter (expansion and meaning) and Uranus (innovation and change) form a nearly exact Yod aspect to that Saturn in her chart. The Yod is also called the “Finger of Fate” or “Finger of God,” and a Yod by transit such as this signifies a crucial event in a person’s life. For Mrs. Clinton, Saturn is the “apex planet” in this configuration which tells us that this is a crucial time for her to take responsibility (Saturn) for creating a structure for her life that will serve her and keep her moving forward on her evolutionary journey.

Mrs. Clinton has burned a lot of her bridges in this campaign under the influence of Chiron (wounding and healing) in a challenging aspect to her Scorpio Venus, but this is a turning point for her to be able to set off in a new direction and discover the Chironic healing quality of facing up to one’s inner issues. Her nature is very fixed and stubborn, with four planets in Scorpio in a square to Mars and Pluto in Leo, and it’s not easy for her to gain perspective over her life.

The New Moon provides an opportunity for her to do so, and with that new perspective to begin a new phase in her career that could end up putting her in a position of real power as we can see by the harmonious aspect of the New Moon to that pesky Mars Pluto conjunction (Pluto rules power, change, and endings).

If she fails to take advantage of this opportunity and instead continues down the path of blind and stubborn determination, it will take her a long time to pick up the pieces.

Chiron in Aquarius



The synchronicity between the names given to planets by astronomers and the way they operate in astrology is one of the great mysteries of the heavens. In ancient times the astronomers WERE the astrologers, and as they observed the planet Venus in the sky they truly saw the goddess of love, Aphrodite, Ishtar, Inanna. In our modern scientific time there is a greater disconnect between the ancient archetypes and the natural world, and an argument can be made that our culture suffers as a result.

Chiron is a “planetoid” in the Kuyper Belt that was discovered in 1977, and in astrology Chiron represents the body/mind connection, the healing process, and identifies an unhealable wound which motivates us to seek a higher purpose for our life. (More on Chiron here.) For that reason it is also associated with the wisdom that comes with experience

For the past several years (since 2002) Chiron has been traveling through Capricorn, the sign that rules hard work and social structures – government, schools, corporations, marriage, and capitalism. During this period the curtain has been drawn on the ways in which these structures (Capricorn) have wounded our society (Chiron). The Enron and Worldcom debacles not only destroyed two companies, but also created a deep wound in the communities that served them. The so-called War on Terror created virtual concentration camps for “enemy combatants” where torture took place. The reputation of many governments (including the USA) have been destroyed and corruption revealed. The 2004 election created an even greater fracturing of American society.

On a positive note, Chiron’s pass through Capricorn over the past three years has brought many healing modalities into the mainstream of society and brought new respect to the concept of the body/mind connection.

Chiron moved into Aquarius for the first time in February of this year and then turned back and made a final pass through Capricorn between July and December. What can we expect during the next five or so years as Chiron goes in and out through Aquarius?

Aquarius is a sign of the air element: communicative, rational, and idealistic. It tends to be revolutionary in its desire for freedom and change to the status quo. Chiron last passed through Aquarius between 1955 and 1960. 1955 saw the beginning of the end of the idyllic (for white folks, that is) post-war era, the era of Ozzie and Harriet and the white picket fence. This interesting article cites many examples and a timeline, showing that in 1955 we saw the the first evidence of a fissure that was forming in the veneer of international society, and the beginnings of a subculture for whom freedom and innovation was the key motivating force. Elvis, James Dean, these rebellious figures in popular culture revealed the growing dissatisfaction with modern society. Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat that year, and how interesting that her death as Chiron re-enters Aquarius reminds us of the fight for freedom that so many African-Americans have suffered for. The introduction of the birth control pill heralded the dawn of the period of sexual freedom.

During the next Chiron Aquarius period we are likely to see a new call for freedom from immigrants all over the world that are beginning to seek a new power in the countries that they now call home. Wherever our culture is stuck in a process that is harmful to individuals, there will be a breakdown in order for a new beginning to take place. Aquarius rules the nervous system, and I am concerned that our already overloaded psyches will begin to break down, and we will need to closely watch our young people who are the most vulnerable to psychic distress.

Aquarius also rules technology, and the Internet will grow as a means for social groups to band together. An increased use of wireless technology will make it easier for humans to be constantly connected across the globe.

Chiron’s pass through Aquarius will affect most personally those with planets in the fixed signs: Aquarius, Leo, Scorpio and Taurus.
