Chiron is different from anything else in the Universe

Chiron astrology art by James Mesple.  The mythological Chiron was a creature that was half man and half horse, so he is often lumped together with other Centaurs who share those physical attributes.  Astrologers sometimes classify him as an asteroid (his original astronomical classification), and astronomers sometimes describe him as a comet because he exhibits comet-like behavior.  You can read more about Chiron’s classification here in this earlier post.

The Centaurs of Greek mythology were actually tribes of beast-like men who roamed through Thessaly and the Pelopenessian peninsula in ancient times.  Although Chiron was similar in appearance, because he was half horse half man, he was of a different lineage entirely.  His father was Cronos (Saturn) and his mother was the nymph Philyra.  Chiron’s bestial shape was due to Cronos having shapeshifted into a stallion in order to overtake and mate with Philyra, the object of his great desire.   So while Chiron shares a similar imagery to the race of Centaurs, he is completely unrelated.

In the same way, Chiron is very different from the other astronomically classified Centaurs. Most important is the location of his orbit which generally lies between Saturn and Uranus although that orbit is elliptical and peculiar.  Barbara Hand Clow has called Chiron the “Rainbow Bridge” between the personal planets (the visible planets through Saturn) and the transpersonal planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto).  The personal planets represent personality, and the outer planets are transformational forces.  Chiron serves the role of facilitating transformation through the healing of problems in the personality.

In mythology Chiron is often described as the wisest of the Centaurs, but in my mind this is erroneous on many levels.  Since he was not one of the Centaur race, his wisdom is in a category unto itself and unrelated to the Centaurs.  He was fostered by the god Apollo and became a mentor to the ancient Greek heroes and the tutor to Asclepius, god of medicine. He inspires the kind of wisdom that only life experience and conscious understanding of our inner wounds can reveal.

There are not many astrologers who work with the other astronomically classified Centaurs, and we are just beginning to learn what significance they offer to the astrological chart.  Pholus and Nessus seem to be the major Centaurs that are in use at the moment, although with new planetary bodies being discovered every day the landscape of potential symbolism is virtually unlimited.

Still, there is no doubt in my mind that Chiron is a unique key to understanding the challenges that we face today, in the twenty-first century, to grow and evolve beyond the limits of our past and move with greater freedom  into a new and unique future.

New Moon in Cancer, July 18/19th 2012. Prepare to be revealed!

Cancer new moon 2012 We have had a couple of intense weeks between the square between Uranus and Pluto (discussed in numerous places on this blog) and a strong influence of Mars setting off a series of planets over the past week or so.

This intensity is embedded in the chart of the New Moon in Cancer on the 19th (18th in any time zone west of Eastern time). The New Moon offers an opportunity to wipe the slate clean and begin anew, and in Cancer we find ourselves discovering emotional depth that we may have ignored in the past. Cancer rules the inner world – our feelings, our desire to nurture and be cared for, our tribal identifications such as to family or country.

The Cancerian New Moon is extra sensitive, and with Mars in an awkward in conjunct to Chiron during the New Moon this may not be the most comfortable time emotionally. Feelings are being elicited from us that may leave us feeling exposed and raw (Mars), but it’s all part of the energetic shift that is helping us to release some of the emotional sheathing that is no longer needed and which may be holding us back from the kind of energetic transformation that is occurring now.

Saturn is challenging the New Moon, so some kind of focused plan or effort will be required to navigate this lunation (lunar event). Honoring this time of sacred new beginnings by creating a solid intention will help to integrate Saturn in a way that is useful and beneficial, especially since Jupiter embraces us with positive energy at the New Moon.

Meanwhile a beneficial aspect from Jupiter to Uranus helps us to gain greater understanding at the higher level, and a pleasant trine from Mars to Jupiter gives us the confidence and enthusiasm we need to embrace these changes and look forward to the positive effects they will bring.

A challenging square from Jupiter to Chiron is just beginning to make itself known at the New Moon but will culminate on the 24th. For a week or so before and a few days after that date we may feel particularly sensitive as the urge for freedom (Jupiter) rushes to heal old wounds (Chiron) perhaps a bit before we feel we are ready. Jupiter opens the doors to liberation, so while this heightened sensitivity isn’t comfortable, it can be the key to personal freedom.

New Moons are times to create something new, so look inside your life to see where a fresh new beginning is ready to make itself known.

Musings on “higher octave” planets

higher octave planetsby Lynn Hayes

Mercury and Uranus both turn retrograde next week so I thought it might be a good idea to begin with a discussion of the concept of “higher octave” planets since Uranus is known as the higher octave of Mercury, and that is important to understand when looking at their tandem retrogradation this month.

The personal planets, representing aspects of personality, are the planets that are visible in the sky.  Saturn forms a natural boundary to the personal planets, which is in itself an interesting symbology since Saturn rules boundaries and limits, as well as the practical material world.  The outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) represent transformational forces – they transpersonalize our experiences and bring us into a greater connection with the Universal laws of spirit and metaphysics.

The outer planets most commonly thought of as “higher octave” planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.  These transformational planets are associated with the three planets closest to the Sun: Mercury (associated with Uranus), Venus (associated with Neptune) and Pluto (associated with Mars).  Where Mercury represents the mind and personal awareness, Uranus expands that awareness to a broader consciousness of Universal Mind.  Where Venus represents love and personal relationships, Neptune inspires us to open our hearts to Divine Love and a relationship with the Universe itself.  Where Mars represents our personal will and desires, Pluto represents the will of the higher self –   urging us to drop any pretense of limitation and evolve into our most empowered Self.

In this model, the principle of Saturn stands at the guardian of the gates and in order to elevate from the lower octave to the higher, the boundaries of the material world (Saturn) must be transcended.

In my view Ceres, the long-suffering female goddess who was relegated to asteroid status until she was suddenly reclassified with Pluto as a transformational force back in 2006, is the higher octave of the Moon.  Ceres relates to nourishment of the body but also the soul in its focus on our connection to Gaia, the earth, elevating the nurturing of the emotional realm that the Moon oversees.

Chiron, the Soul Healer, serves as a bridge between the personal and the transpersonal.  It is a maverick in the solar system – neither planet nor comet nor asteroid, it is a unique body that has a uniquely original place in the astrological pantheon.  Chiron induces the healing crises that help to move us through our incarnation and heal the wounds of the past that create blockages in the bodymind spirit system.  Chiron inspires transformation, but is not itself tied to any other transformational force.

Mercury and Uranus will turn retrograde at the same time this month, and tomorrow we will discuss the implications of that event.

New Moon in Pisces, February 21 2012

Art from Bianca Clipperton. Today’s New Moon is a juicy one, and will carry us into a new beginning of spiritual sensitivity and compassionate opening of the heart.

The New Moon in Pisces occurs on February 21 st. This is a particularly powerfully Neptunian New Moon since Neptune and Chiron flank the Sun and Moon, all within four degrees of each other. Mercury is also in Pisces, and if we look at the asteroids as well we see Pallas linking the Sun and Chiron.

Neptune and Pisces encourage us to transcend the physical world and delve into the mysteries of spirituality, of creativity. There is a yearning under this influence to be free from the trappings of the material world – to flee from the potential ugliness of our reality and merge with the great Unknown that lies on the other side of conscious awareness. This can be an experience of incredible inspiration. It can also promote confusion and delusion.

New Moons are always times of new beginnings – it’s the beginning of the new lunar cycle when the solar and lunar principles are fused and integration can occur. This New Moon is the perfect time for a spiritual retreat, or to focus on a project involving artistry or some other type of creativity such as music and dance. Any experience in which we can let go of ourselves and allow the divinity to channel through us will be heightened and enhanced under this New Moon. Mercury in Pisces helps us to release the mind into the transcendent experience, although an opposition from Mars to Mercury will evoke a fire influence that will need to be managed in some way (ideally through integration of fire and enthusiasm into the creative spirituality of the New Moon).

Chiron and Neptune have been within four degrees of each other for several years now. You can read more about that conjunction here, but briefly, this conjunction brings together the Soul Healer (Chiron) with the Soul Teacher (Neptune) has overseen the deeply intense and sometimes agonizing experience of clearing old emotional wounds for the purpose of greater spiritual integration. Now that both planets have moved from Aquarius into Pisces, the flow and release of the old wounds can be managed with more ease and grace. It’s important with any Pisces/Neptune influence, though, to try to balance the potential power of the spiritual experience with the need to keep two feet firmly grounded into the physical world.

The presence of Pallas Athena in this assemblage of Pisces planets is interesting, since Pallas represents Divine Knowledge and Wisdom. Pallas links the Sun and Chiron, bestowing a creative intelligence that aids us in gaining understanding from these experiences which go beyond the realm of the mortal mind.

Jupiter sextiles this New Moon Pisces stellium, and over the next few days the Sun will sexxtile Pluto as well which will help the positive effects of the New Moon carry over into the end of the month.

Soul surgery: Planetary news this week

Art by Gaelyn Garrick

Those of us on a spiritual path seek transformation and spiritual evolution but then resist it when the experience is upon us.  This is human nature since the ego seeks to control the experience of the life – to surrender that control can be frightening to many of us, especially if we have planets in fixed signs (like I do!!) which tend to be more inflexible and lack adaptability.

But life is about change and adaptation, and understanding the astrological cycles can help us to find peace within the storm of change.  When we recognize the dynamics of change that are at work in the form of planetary energies it becomes easier to work with them – they become trusted teachers and we know more about what we can expect in times of change.

A few days ago Venus opposed Chiron, the Soul Healer, and today the Sun is opposite Chiron. Relationships may be more painful than usual now as Chiron goes about his job as Soul Surgeon, exposing any sensitive places in the heart so that they can become healed. This kind of emotional sensitivity is quickly healed if we permit ourselves to consciously move through these experiences and allow these old thoughts, feelings or memories to emerge and then be released.

Venus made a trine to Pluto last night, helping to soften the rough edges and help us to be real and genuine in our relationships with others for the next 12 hours or so.  The Moon is moving away from Mars and it’s easier to express our vulnerability under the Cancerian influence. Meanwhile the Sun/Chiron opposition helps to crack open the protection that we keep over our wounds so that we can blossom and open from the heart.

By the 28th when the Sun trines Pluto at the New Moon in Virgo you will feel renewed.

Here on the East coast we are preparing for the onslaught of Hurricane Irene.  I’ve lived in North Carolina for over 30 years so I am very accustomed to hurricane preparation, and I have come to think of personal transformation as being very much like a hurricane.  It can be frightening when the eye of the storm passes over your house, as it did in 1994 when Hurricane Fran stormed through the state.  But after every hurricane the air is clean and refreshed, and though there may be damage to clean up and restore there is a sense of renewal and a new beginning.

As we head more deeply into the square of Uranus and Pluto we will become more familiar with the cycle of intense personal storm activity that is followed by a personal renewal.  This is an important aspect of the process of our personal evolution and like a hurricane, it is inevitable.  The more we can cultivate a personal relationship with our own inner voice and guidance, the easier the process of transformation becomes.

Understanding the planetary cycles that guide you personally can be a great aid and comfort as well as help us to prepare for the shifts that are required for the planet to adjust to the energy of this new age.

Chiron pays Matthew a visit

For the most astrological fun you can have with your clothes on, you owe it to yourself to visit Matthew Currie’s blog where he takes on astrological issues with humor AND astro-intelligence.  Today he sits down with Chiron over a bottle of vodka:

I was sitting around last night contemplating my Solar Return chart in the traditional manner — over a bottle of cheap vodka — when the door bell rang. A pizza delivery car was idling outside. Not having ordered a pizza, but with a professional astrologer’s keen instincts for a free meal, I answered the door. Much to my surprise, the pizza was being delivered by no less than Chiron the Centaur himself.

“This must be an awkward moment for you” Chiron said.

“You’re telling me,” I replied. “I didn’t order a pizza, and I’m broke.”

“I didn’t mean that. I mean, you’ve never written about me, ever. And I rarely hear you mention me in your consultations.”

I felt myself blush a little, something that doesn’t happen much any more. “Well, you know I prefer a more mechanistic approach to my astrology. You know –”

Chiron interrupted. ” ‘I’ll tell you when you get hit by the truck, you figure out how youfeel about it.’ I know. It’s one of your favourite lines.”

I set the pizza down on the coffee table. “Look, I realize that the functions you represent are vital to the counselling process. Really, I do. I just have a hard time seeing the practical use of you in a reading. It’s not like a nice solid Uranus transit squaring natal Mars screwing up your blood pressure.”

“Isn’t Sun square Chiron on the Midheaven one of the tighter aspects in your chart?” Chiron asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “And that should make me some kind of expert if there was any sort of observable –”

“And aren’t you sitting around in the dark, drinking for no obvious reason, feeling all bad about your existence, right before your Solar Return?”

I glanced around. “I just haven’t changed the light bulb yet. Honest. So is this what you do now: go around handing out meals people can’t afford and didn’t ask for?”

Chiron trotted over to the pizza box and opened it. It had extra cheese, which almost managed to obscure the Brussels Sprouts, parsnips, and liverwurst toppings. I cringed.

“No.” Chiron replied. “I go around handing out what people really need, emotionally, whether they know it or not. And it’s free.”

Chiron and Kundalini

As many of you know, Chiron has been a specialty of mine for many years and one of the lesser-known roles of Chiron in the birthchart is to reveal the way energy flows in the body.  This energy flow through the energy centers that we call the chakras is called “kundalini,” and my friend Greg over at the Occult of Personality podcasts posted an article by Gopi Krishna on his Facebook page today about Kundalini that I thought was particularly relevant to Chiron in the astrological chart:

I am irresistibly led to the conclusion that the human organism is evolving in the direction indicated by mystics and prophets and by men of genius, by the action of this wonderful mechanism, located at the base of the spine, depending for its activity mainly on the energy supplied by the reproductive organs. Though not in its general application as the evolutionary organ in man, but in the individual sphere as the means to develop spirituality, super-normal facilities and psychic powers, the mechanism has been known and manipulated from very ancient times.

When manipulated and roused to intense activity by men already advanced on the path of progress and subject to numerous factors, especially favourable heredity, constitution, mode of conduct, occupation and diet, it can lead to most remarkable and extremely useful results, developing the organism by general stages from its native condition to a state of extraordinary mental efficiency, conducting it ultimately to the zenith of cosmic consciousness and genius combined.

This indeed is Chiron’s role – to forge a bridge between the trappings of personality that are the domain of the personal planets, and the transformational work of spiritual evolution and development that are the domain of the transpersonal (or outer) planets.

Barbara Hand Clow wrote about this phenomenon in her book The Liquid Light of Sex, which is rather little about sex and more about the flow of Kundalini energy, and you can read more about it here in my article from last year as well.

The Nature of Grief and Astrological Cycles

Throughout this year, with Chiron and Neptune traveling together, many of my clients have called megrief.jpg with overwhelming feelings of grief.  Often there is an event that appears to have caused these intense emotions, but sometimes the feelings appear to stem from events that occurred long ago.  A client who had mourned the loss of her mother that happened nine years ago.  Another who grieved the loss of her first marriage many years ago.  Suddenly, after many years, the emotions welled up seemingly from nowhere to take over their lives.

When Chiron and Neptune are working together, they combine to assist with the work of the soul. The body, the mind, and the ego are all most interested in living a life well-grounded in the material world that offers the maximum of pleasure and the minimum of pain. The soul does not pursue pleasure and avoid pain; instead, there is an embrace of experiences that will assist us at the deepest level to completely learn the lessons that are presented to us so that we can release the past and move forward with greater wisdom.

Chiron facilitates this aspect of soul work by uncovering any wounded places that have been left unresolved so that we can be freed of the blocked energy that our unreleased wounds hold within the body/mind/spirit system. Neptune assists by reminding us that there is a world of experience that lies beyond the boundaries of the material world. Under the influence of Neptune we either open up to experiences of a powerful mystical nature, or else we become confused and deluded as the nature of our personal reality is blurred and we have nothing to replace it with. Neptune bestows creative genius and a spiritual connection to our Divine self as the physical world is transcended, or it can cause us to indulge in escapist and addictive behavior in an effort to escape the prison of our own mind.

Challenging astrological cycles do often coincide with painful events in our life, but whether the grief we feel is over a current loss or an old one, the feelings are the same.  Psychiatrists know that grief and emotional pain are stored in the psyche with the same intensity that they held during the original event.
Chiron has been a great teacher and guide for astrologers’ understanding about the nature of grief, but Saturn and Pluto play a role as well.
Under Saturn transits we are painfully aware of our faults, our loneliness, and the blocks that keep us from our happiness.  Saturn is associated with depression which has a different tonal quality than grief.
Under Pluto transits we often find ourselves facing unpleasant truths and frightening memories from our past, and Pluto can bring up deep and dark emotions that unlock doors to emotional pain.  But it’s Chiron that opens the doorways for the emotional pain that we store in our psyche to spring forth into the conscious mind where it can, with conscious focus and attention, be processed and released.
Often a client will ask me, “When will this be over?  Will I ever be happy again?”  They will say “I don’t want to ever feel this again.”  We spend our lives running from our pain, but the problem with that is as long as we run, the pain remains stored in our psyche and our bodies.  Later it may erupt in physical pain and nondiagnosable illness.
What is required is the courage to look into our own soul and open the doorway to the feelings, to see what they have to tell us and to teach us.  It’s not an easy path, but it’s the only way to wholeness.

The Astrology of David Letterman’s Extortion Announcement

http://blogs.kansas.com/weblog/files/letterman.jpgAs the world knows by now, David Letterman recently responded to a multimillion dollar extortion plot against him by announcing the scandalous details of his in-office sex life on his television show on Thursday night.

A former staffer had apparently collected information about Letterman’s affairs and revealed them to her boyfriend, a producer at CBS named Joe Halderman, who was arrested Thursday for the extortion plot.

David Letterman has made his reputation on being a quirky and eccentric talk show host, and his personal life has reflected his eccentricity.  Although he has been in a relationship with partner Regina Lasko for 23 years, they never married until March and he has worked diligently to keep his private life hidden from the public view.

Astrologically, David Letterman (4/12/47, 6:00 am, Indianapolis) has the Sun in Aries, the sign of courage and individuality and reflecting his independent spirit.  The 6 am birthtime is suspect to me because of its inexactness, but if it is correct he has Taurus rising.  The rising sign describes the way we approach our life and the way that we are perceived by others, and someone with Taurus rising requires a certain amount of predictability in his life.  He would want to have the same job for many years (check), consistency in his personal life (check – longtime relationship), he would have a desire to accumulate wealth and possessions (check) and he would be quite stubborn (check).

Like many of us, Letterman has a challenging planetary system in his chart which reflects a certain amount of psychological distress:  a conjunction of Saturn (challenge and restriction) to Pluto (death and transformation) which forms a square to Chiron in Scorpio (wounding and healing in the area of intimacy and deep emotion).  Letterman is someone who feels his wounds deeply, but that Aries Sun demands that he continually push through those wounds through the sheer force of his will.

That Chiron sits right on the cusp of the seventh house of partnership and open enemies, revealing the tendency for Dave’s relationships to be painful yet promote healing.  This event is very descriptive of the way Chiron works:  A challenging event forces Letterman’s old wounds into the public view, causing great personal turmoil and disturbance, but eventually, hopefully, leading to the resolution of what must have been a long conflict for him regarding his personal relationships.

This is not the first time someone close to Letterman has turned on him (the seventh house is the house not only of partnerships and marriage, but also of “open enemies”) – in 2005 a painter who worked for Letterman was charged with conspiracy to kidnap his son.

Venus in Letterman’s chart also tells a tale about his personal relationships.  Venus is in Pisces – warm and romantic, and needing a certain amount of fantasy to remain interested.  Venus forms a square to Uranus, an aspect that requires autonomy and a sense of space, as well as a need for a variety of people in our life to provide stimulation and excitement.  You can see how a Pisces Venus, with its need for closeness and romance, is not a good partner for the detached and revolutationary Uranus and this reveals the underlying conflict in Dave regarding his personal relationships.

When I have married clients with this configuration, or one like it, I advise them to find balance in their lives between their need for closeness and this need for stimulation from other people.  Usually one side of that conflict is buried in the subconscious, so the client may only be aware of their need for space and not of their need for closeness, or they may want 24-hour intimacy and not be aware that they also need that space.  In those cases they end up in relationships with partners who are unavailable or rejecting.  In the ideal world, these planetary conflicts find balance and mutual expression.

In Dave’s world, he was able to successfully compartmentalize his life so that he had the stability that he craved (Taurus rising), could pursue his successful career (Sun in Aries, Moon in Capricorn) and still find excitement in romance (Venus/Uranus).

The Jupiter/Chiron/Neptune conjunction that peaked in late May of this year formed an exact square to Jupiter in Dave’s chart.  You may remember that this triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune has had the effect of bringing up old wounds (Chiron) so that the soul can be healed (Neptune/Chiron), and that Jupiter created big events to facilitate the process.  These planets have been affecting Dave’s Jupiter, which sits in his seventh house of relationships.  Jupiter, as king of the gods, often shows where we want to be king, and in the seventh house he tends to want control over that domain.  This control is being challenged right now by the triple conjunction, and I suspect this event will result in a big personal change for him.
