Capricorn Full Moon! July 14-15, 2011

Full Moon Capricorn July 15 2011

The Capricorn Full Moon the 15th occurs with the Moon in Capricorn opposite the Cancerian Sun. Signs in opposition are like the Yin/Yang symbol – each sign contains what the other lacks, and the Full Moon requires that we integrate those opposing forces. The Cancerian Sun is concerned with family and feeling – a connection to our tribe and our ancestors. There is an emotional focus that personalizes everything we see. The Capricorn Moon is all about responsibilities and prefers to put emotions aside until our responsibilities and tasks are behind us.

The Cancer/Capricorn polarity also describes the relationship between the parent and the child – the outer world  and the inner one.  We begin as a child, and then become a parent, and then sometimes a parent to our own parents.  All polarities contain a balance and requires an integration of the two ends of the axis. In order to achieve in the outer world we must have a balanced inner life.  We cannot truly find that inner place of home until we resolve our place in the world.

The Venus/Saturn square will still be in effect at the time of the Full Moon which suggests that this focus on Capricornian accomplishment could stand in the way of harmony in our relationships (since Saturn rules Capricorn it provides support in this case for the need to build structure and put aside our personal feelings for the tasks at hand. Capricorn’s purpose is to master the material world. and personal feelings (both our own and those of our loved ones) are not always considered as part of the master plan.

The square of Uranus and Pluto, which is within a degree right now and as close as it will come until next year, is embedded in the chart of this Full Moon where it is beaming a light into our consciousness that requires us to make choices.  Uranus demands integrity and authenticity, and Pluto ensures endings and transformation.  Will we make these choices willingly, or will they be made for us?  That is the question asked by this Full Moon.

This Full Moon is a Supermoon

Full Moon Supermoonphoto taken from www.forphotography.com.

The Full Moon on January 30st will be a very interesting event – so interesting that it’s getting its own radio show entitled “Fire and the Full Moon.”  It’s not only a powerful Moon astrologically, but it’s at perigee, meaning it’s at its closest proximity to the Earth.  This is why it is so big and beautiful, but it’s also more powerful now.  Spaceweather says it’s the biggest Full Moon of the year, and astrologer Richard Nolle, who coined the term “Supermoon” as far as I can tell, predicts “an increase in coastal flooding due to higher than usual tides, a gaggle of strong storms with high winds and heavy precipitation (triggering inland flooding), and of course an up-tick in moderate to severe seismic activity (including magnitude 5+ earthquakes as well as volcanic eruptions).”

This Full Moon will stoke the fires of our inner aggression and challenge us to direct that fire wisely. The Moon is in the fire sign of Leo – the sign of expressing the Ego and expansion of the Self. The Leo Moon conjoins Mars, also in Leo, and opposes the Sun and Venus which are both in the impersonal (or transpersonal) sign of Aquarius.

The theme of this Full Moon is that of balancing the shadow of the inner fire for self-direction with the solar conscious principle of fairness and justice for all. This balance is not easy to achieve, but we have in the chart of this Full Moon the additional aid of a harmonious sextile between Pluto (transformation) and Jupiter (philosophy and Truth). We are certainly aware that our personal desires (Moon/Mars) are conflicting with what we know to be necessary in order to achieve harmony in our life (Sun/Venus), but we are inspired to seek the ultimate Truth (Jupiter) so that we can let go of the past and shed the old ways that don’t serve us (Pluto).

The chart for this Full Moon also shows the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune which is extremely tight now, within a half of a degree. The opening of the heart and the soul and the flood of outpouring of emotion that can result is more and more intense at this time. This aspect will culminate in February, but its influence begins with this Full Moon.

The gentle guidance of Pluto and Jupiter is offset by the intensity of the Saturn/Pluto square which is only six minutes from exactitude. This combination is rather like the influence a teacher who is gentle in his strong guidance, but who when crossed reveals a formidable temper. Any attempt to deviate from the lesson required by this Full Moon will be met with challenge and the potential for self-destruction. Serious focus is demanded here, but much will be given in return.

Full Moon, Blue Moon, Eclipse Moon and Other Planetary News

Once in a Blue Moon, by Sofanya White.Blue_Moon.jpg
A gorgeous big moon followed me home tonight, even though she technically won’t be full until the afternoon of New Year’s Eve.  This is a Blue Moon because it’s the second Full Moon in a month, something that doesn’t happen very often (hence the term “once in a blue moon”).  It’s also an eclipse, because the lunar nodes are involved; however, it’s a partial eclipse and not very powerful astrologically.
The Full Moon occurs when the lunar principle of the subconscious inner world overpowers the solar conscious mind with its brilliance as the Moon opposes the Sun in the sky, with the Earth between them.  At the Full Moon we earthlings are sandwiched between these two archetypal forces, and the experience of the Full Moon can be intensely emotional and unexpected.
This particular Full Moon is in the sign of Cancer, its own sign, suggesting that our sensitive emotional natures will be highlighted at this time.  The emotions of Cancer are vulnerable and tender and easily hurt, and the Moon now is opposed to four planets in the pragmatic and rather rigid sign of Capricorn.  The Capricorn lineup includes a tight conjunction of the Sun, Venus (relating) and Pluto (transformation, death, and rebirth).  There is a feeling now that every emotion we experience is critical and can act as a doorway, and a need to create balance in our own emotional world as well as in our relationships.
A lunar event becomes an eclipse when the nodes of the Moon become involved.  The Moon’s nodes represent the evolutionary direction of the soul, so when the nodes are tightly connected to a Full or New Moon there is a sense of destiny that is imparted.  However, astronomers give the nodes a very wide orb of 15 degrees, and this particular eclipse finds the nodes 11 degrees from the Sun and Moon, which is rather far to have much astrological effect.
Still, Saturn is the fulcrum of what we call a “T-square,” challenging both the Moon and the Capricorn planets.  Saturn demands discipline and focused attention, so in the midst of the New Year’s Eve celebration we might be wise to do a little planning for the New Year as well. This will help us to be prepared when the Moon aligns with Saturn on the 6th, creating the potential for depression and sadness as the two face off in a square with Pluto and that sense of finality that Saturn and Pluto bring.
The message here is that our lives are a gift that we need to take seriously.  Celebrations and parties are a wonderful thing, but this Full Moon/Blue Moon Eclipse wants us to take a look at our life and create something wondrous.

Harvest Moon Tomorrow!

Harvest MoonThe Full Moon on the 15th is the Harvest Moon, so named because the period between sunset and moonrise is shorter as we near the Autumnal Equinox which makes for a longer workday on the farm.

This Full Moon is in the sign of Pisces. During the Full Moon, the Sun opposes the Moon, and there is a tension between the conscious mind and the more lunar instinctive emotions. With the Sun in Virgo, the tension in this Full Moon is between creating order out of our mundane reality (Virgo) and a yearning for something more transcendent and mystical (Pisces). As spiritual beings living on the earth plane, it is imperative that we learn to perfect this balance, and this Full Moon is a wonderful time to integrate the details of our lives with our spiritual awareness.

The chart for the Full Moon incorporates close conjunction from the Moon to Uranus, the planet of disruption, innovation and change. Here there is a polarization between the desire for change as presented by Uranus and the need for order and security that is prized by the Virgo Sun. Change is inevitable, and the presence of Uranus reminds us to let go of the things in our past that restrain us or keep us from moving forward.  The energy of Uranus can be intense as Uranus rules electromagnetic energy and radiation, so if this Moon (at 23 degrees Pisces) affects your chart you may find yourself unable to sleep and feeling wired.  Spending time in water can help soothe Uranian nerves and assist with entering the flow that Pisces requires.

The Full Moon chart also includes a trine from Jupiter to Saturn. This is a powerful alliance that helps us to integrate the confidence and opportunities that Jupiter provides with the discipline and achievement that Saturn fosters. This combination will help give form to our endeavors.

Mercury, Mars and Venus are all conjunct in Libra now, where relationships and harmony are called for.  For several days following the Full Moon, this intrepid trio of planets (Mercury, Mars, Venus) enter into a lovely dance (trine) with Neptune, planet of mysticism and spirituality. This is a beautifully creative time during which the soul can truly sing as long as the Mars energy is integrated properly into our lives. Mars is pure energy and can be directed in positive or negative ways. If we use its energy to express our needs appropriately, defend our boundaries peacefully and power our bodies physically, Mars is not likely to create too many problems but we may find ourselves in disagreements or arguments that require balance and negotiation. Mars and Mercury will remain in alignment with Neptune until the 24th or so, but the Venus influence here will last only a few days.

Still, there are some broader influences at work.  Pluto has just changed direction and is still stationary, and the intensity of its power is being felt all over the world.  We are also in the shadow of the Mercury Retrograde period, when communication becomes more difficult and we must go back over episodes in the past that need to be reworked in order to move forward when the Retrograde cycle is complete.

Notes on the Upcoming Eclipse

Lunar eclipse

Lunar eclipse

In my travels on the web today I found this article by Geoffrey de Meaux, a French astrologer from that time about an eclipse that occurred in March of 1345 that he believes was the harbinger of the plague.  His description of the mechanism of the eclipse is eloquent and vivid:

The sun is the lord, the director of all events, both general and specific, and the moon is second to him in dominion and power, and their effect is to intensify the effects of the planets acting with them.  It is therefore in the natural course of events, and not to be wondered at, that such a great configuration should bring about major events on the earth, from the nature of the planets which drew to themselves the natures of the sun and moon.  For when the sun is directly opposite the moon, as occurs in a total eclipse, then the power of each of them reaches the earth in a straight line, and the mingling of the influence of sun and moon with that of the superior planets creates a single celestial force which operates in conformity with the nature of the superior planets, which have drawn to themselves the powers of the sun and moon….  On their own they cannot achieve anything great or universal, but when compounded with the sun and moon … they bend the nature of the two luminaries to their own nature, and thus with the power of the two luminaries are able to achieve great things which have a general and universal impact.  These natural causes affect the whole inhabited world between east and north….

Eclipses have long been believed to cause devastating events, and in this article deMeaux draws a connection between an eclipse in March of 1345 to the advent of the Black Plague which devastated Europe over a period of 300 years.  It’s always easier to go back and find astrological correspondences than to accurately predict future events, and I myself believe that the lessons of the Universe are based on surprise, so that if we are expecting one thing under a certain planetary event and work to avoid it, the lesson will come in a different form.

Still, deMeaux’s comment about the power that planetary configurations have when combined in an eclipse is an interesting one, and well worth considering in light of the upcoming lunar eclipse at the Full Moon on August 16th.  Eclipses are thought to have a more powerful effect in those areas where the eclipse is most visible, and for this event that will be in most of Africa, Eastern Europe, central Asia, India and the Middle East. Since these are areas that are in intense stress at this time, it may be hard to see a real difference.

The chart for the eclipse includes a conjunction of the Moon to Neptune, Chiron and the North Node, all in Aquarius.  Aquarius is a dry air sign, and its symbol is the water bearer – the pouring out of water onto the earth.  Chiron has been conjunct Neptune and the North Node for several months now, bringing up old wounds (Chiron) into mass consciousness for healing, but the way towards healing is obscured by falsehoods and illusion (Neptune).

There is a sense here of the wasting of resources, resulting in a deprivation leading to greater conflict. The presence of the Moon in conjunction to the Aquarius stellium suggests that the subconscious and instinctive force will be in ascendancy during the time of the eclipse.  But the North Node will keep the process focused towards our evolutionary future, while the Sun conjoins the South Node showing that our conscious mind will want to cling to the past. Now is a time to let go of our ideas of the direction our world should be heading in, and follow the path of Neptune’s call to the divine through the healing crisis of Chiron, into the path of the future.

The square from Mars in Virgo to Pluto in the chart of the eclipse is in itself a fast-moving transit and therefore less powerful than other slower planetary cycles.  But in the chart of an eclipse, this square can be a powerful signal for conflict and an eruption of violence.  Mars is part of a lineup of four planets in Virgo:  a triple conjunction of Saturn, Mercury and Venus, with Mars a little farther away but still in the sign of Virgo.  Virgo is the sign of purity, health, and the mundane details of human reality.

Relationships and communication could be challenging now with Saturn (restriction and limitation) so tightly enmeshed with the transmission of information (Mercury) and the flow of relating to others (Venus). Virgo has a tendency to be perfectionistic and cautious about the future which is due in part to its tendency to analyze and observe every detail. This is a time when we are more prone to obsess over every detail and this can cause a great deal of worry if we’re not careful to attempt to regain our balance.

Overall, this eclipse is concerned with the polarity between the individual ego (Sun and South Node in Leo) and the call of the transpersonal collective (Moon, Neptune, Chiron, North Node in Aquarius).  Aquarius is innovative and seeks a totally new road to enlightenment.  Change is inevitable, and must be embraced!

Solstice Full Moon tomorrow!

I interrupt the Obama series to bring you the Full Moon! NASA reports:

On Wednesday night, June 18th, step outside at sunset and look around. You’ll see a giant form rising in the east. At first glance it looks like the full Moon. It has craters and seas and the face of a man, but this “moon” is strangely inflated. It’s huge!

You’ve just experienced the Moon Illusion.

There’s no better time to see it. The full Moon of June 18th is a “solstice moon”, coming only two days before the beginning of northern summer. This is significant because the sun and full Moon are like kids on a see-saw; when one is high, the other is low. This week’s high solstice sun gives us a low, horizon-hugging Moon and a strong Moon Illusion.

Sky watchers have known for thousands of years that low-hanging moons look unnaturally big. At first, astronomers thought the atmosphere must be magnifying the Moon near the horizon, but cameras showed that is not the case. Moons on film are the same size regardless of elevation: example. Apparently, only human beings see giant moons.

Are we crazy?

After all these years, scientists still aren’t sure. When you look at the Moon, rays of moonlight converge and form an image about 0.15 mm wide on the retina in the back of your eye. High moons and low moons make the same sized spot, yet the brain insists one is bigger than the other. Go figure!

Thanks to Beth and Rich for the link!

The Full Moon occurs on June 18 at 27 degrees of Sagittarius and incorporates a tight opposition between Venus and Pluto. Here the Sun combines with Venus while the Moon merges with Pluto, signifying that the light or conscious mind (Sun/Venus) is in struggle with the darkness and unconscious soul (Moon/Pluto). The Full Moon occurs when the Sun is opposite (180 degrees) the Moon, and the opposition reveals a tension between two polarities. This double conjunction continues the theme of choice that we saw when Chiron made a conjunction to the North Node earlier in the month. Chiron is still fused with the North Node, forcing us to rise to the challenge of facing our darkness and transmuting it into light.

The Full Moon is in Sagittarius, and brings with it a longing (Moon) for the lightness and adventure of Sagittarius that finds it difficult to reconcile with the Plutonian need to continually re-enter the underworld of the soul to find what is true and deep. This could be a challenging time when we are forced to make a conscious choice: to give up something familiar in order to enter the unknown world of the future. This is a difficult process and requires great trust and awareness.

Venus will enter Cancer on the 18th, and our responsibilities to those that we love have become more important. The opposition to Pluto here suggests that any stress in these relationships will be highlighted at this time and brought into the evolutionary dynamic.

Mercury will end its retrograde travels by turning direct on June 19.

The Summer Solstice occurs each year when the Sun enters the cardinal sign of Cancer, the sign of emotional security and family connections. The chart for the Solstice is often read as an indicator of what the season will bring, and in this Solstice chart, for June 20 in the evening with the Sun at 0 degrees Cancer, we see a harmonious (sextile) aspect of Venus to Saturn, helping us to feel more responsible (Saturn) in our relationships (Venus). This will be useful because Mars (drive and aggression) also opposes Neptune (confusion) that day and we could become quite impotent in our focus as what we want (Mars) begins to be more blurred and indistinct (Neptune).

Full Moon! And Other Planetary News

I’m finishing a hectic week so I will quote from Skywatch. I should be back to my regular schedule by Monday so please bear with me over the weekend. I will try to find interesting things for you to read, though.

On the 18th Mercury trines both Pluto and Saturn, enhancing their influence on each other as they dance together but never aspect each other completely. The addition of Mercury to this combination increases our understanding of the process on a much more conscious level. This is a great time to make plans for the future, especially after a big Plutonic change.

The Sun enters Taurus on April 19, beginning the season of fertility that connects us to the Earth. Taurus is associated with all things associated with Gaia, the mother goddess of the Earth, and as the Sun moves through Taurus those delights are illuminated.

The Moon is Full on April 20th, when the Moon in Scorpio opposes the Sun in Taurus. Scorpio is of course the sign of emotional intensity, where we dive deep into the underworld of our subconscious and discover the nasty bits of greed, envy, jealousy and other dark emotions that lie beneath the surface. By uncovering these emotional treasures we become more authentically who we are, and that is the ultimate goal of the Scorpionic process.

This year we have not just one, but two Scorpio Full Moons!! (The next one is in mid-May. This first one, on April 20th, is an powerful lunation (moon event) – apart from the Scorpio influence, there is also a T-square involving Mars in Cancer opposing Jupiter in Capricorn, both square to Venus in Aries. The opposition between Venus and Mars is interesting, because Venus in Aries is more aggressive and self-centered than it usually is, and Mars in Cancer is far less aggressive and far more concerned with taking care of others. So there is a dual polarity here between self-initiation and nurturing/connection that will be highlighted during the Full Moon period (about three days before and after the actual event). Mercury conjoins the Sun and opposes the Moon, so there is an intellectual component here as well.

Adding balance and stability to the Full Moon event is a Grand Trine between Saturn, Pluto and the Sun/Mercury conjunction, all in Earth signs. This is actually a Kite formation, with the Moon forming the apex of the Kite. The Kite is a more dynamic aspect than the Grand Trine, which is easy and flowing but not at all energetic.

After the influence of the Full Moon has subsided, Mars and Venus continue their dance of influence. On April 22 Mars (energy) forms a trine (harmonious aspect) to Uranus (innovative thinking) and Venus is sextile Chiron, making this an excellent time for collaborative ventures that involve brainstorming or coming up with new ideas. However, Venus is approaching a square to Mars and to Jupiter that will bring up once again the issue of our own individual needs relative to those of others. These aspects culminate on the 23rd and will throw a few ripples into the calm waters of the past couple of days, and the opposition between Mars (individual needs) and Jupiter (expansion) will exacerbate these problems for a day or two.

The energy is shifting, and I know many of you are feeling it. This is part of a larger shift that I believe is the shift between the ages, from Pisces to Aquarius. The more we can work WITH the energy shifts, the easier the changes are. Resistance is what causes pain, not change.

Big Full Moon on Friday. I mean, really big!

solstice_moon_illusion_1The full Moon of Dec. 12th is the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year.

It’s no illusion. Some full Moons are genuinely larger than others and this Friday’s is a whopper. Why? The Moon’s orbit is an ellipse with one side 50,000 km closer to Earth than the other: diagram. In the language of astronomy, the two extremes are called “apogee” (far away) and “perigee” (nearby). On Dec. 12th, the Moon becomes full a scant 4 hours after reaching perigee, making it 14% bigger and 30% brighter than lesser full Moons we’ve seen earlier in 2008….

This is both the brightest and (in the northern hemisphere) the highest-riding full Moon of the year. If you go outside around midnight it will be close to overhead and act like a cosmic floodlamp making the landscape absolutely brilliant, especially if there’s snow. Full moons are always high during winter and, indeed, the solstice is right around the corner on Dec. 21st.

I was awakened early this morning by a bright yellow sky at around 3 am and the effect of this Full Moon can already be felt (we generally consider the effect of a lunation to last for a few days before and after the actual lunar event).  It ought to be interesting, because this Gemini Full Moon sits right on my ascendant.  Astrologer Richard Nolle calls these Full Moons at perigee Supermoons and it is thought that their astrological effect is more powerful, just as the Moon exerts a more powerful pull on the tides at this time.

The opposition of Saturn to Uranus which you have been reading about here and on other astrology sites forms a Grand Cross to the Sun and Moon, which will add to the power of the Full Moon. The Grand Cross is a spectacularly stressful planetary dynamic in which conflict between the planets builds up into a crisis which forces a release and ultimately, a transformative change.

This Full Moon is packed with energy, both mental and physical. Everything within our heart, soul and psyche is moving faster than usual during this Full Moon, and becoming conscious of the need for balance between the internal process and the external drives will help us to get the most out of this lunation. The planetary dynamics here create a powerhouse of dynamic alteration and adjustment that can create some real distress if not focused in a conscious manner.

Fortunately, a Neptune forms an exact harmonious aspect to both the Sun and the Moon which helps us to delve across the physical realm into the subconscious in order to find that internal balance in a more intuitive and sensitive way. The potential for verbal conflict during this Full Moon period, which lasts for a few days before and a few days after the actual event, can be softened by balancing the dynamic energy that wants to push out into aggression with a sensitivity and softness in the heart that helps us to maintain the inner connection to Spirit that creates more balance in the world around us.

During a powerful Full Moon, when the conscious Solar principle faces off with the instinctive Lunar principle, it is useful to increase our conscious awareness (Sun) and attention to our lives and how we are reacting (Moon) to situations rather than acting with intention.  In any case, the next few days are sure to be exciting!

Full Moon Today is a “Wolf Moon”

As earlier noted, today’s full moon is a powerhouse and it’s influence is likely to extend for several days. With Mars (god of war) in a strong conflict with both Jupiter (god of gods) and Neptune (illusion and confusion), we have already seen an increase in conflicts and tensions across the globe that seem to have no outlet.

January’s full moon is known by Native American traditions as the “Wolf Moon.” Art at Aquarian Soul has this interesting article:

Traditionally January has been esconced between the cold and deep snows of midwinter, for the Native American Indian especially those of the Lakota,Nakota and Dakota Nation this was a time that the wolf packs howled hungrily outside their villages. I can almost imagine myself walking in the snowy mountains like a scene out of the movie Windwalker, then huddling inside the tipi for warmth. The wolf has always been a legendary symbol throughout history whether it be the she-wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus so they would survive to found the Roman Empire. Or cultures that tell of Fenrir, in Norse mythology, a monstrous wolf that refused to be tethered. Besides more known references like Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, there were the “Wolf Warriors” known as Dacians. Dacians tribes (Eaos was the Phrygian word for “wolf”) tribes who were an amalgamation of Thracian tribes from the eastern confines of the Greco-Roman world. This lunation has a ravenous, instinctive quality that can manifest in many ways.

The change of direction on the Supreme Court is only one shift that we are undergoing that will change this planet permanently: Political situations in Iran, China, Russia, Ukraine, all are symbolic of the beginnings of a shift in power that we will see over the next 10 years. The key to managing any change cycle is to become more fully integrated human beings, and this Full Moon offers a matrix for that to take place.

Powerful Full Moon Coming Up!

And all the night’s magic seems to whisper and hush. And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush.
– Van Morrison, “Moondance”

Full Moons occur when the solar conscious principle of the Sun opposes the instinctive lunar principle of the Moon. For thousands of years, humans have been mystified by full moons, attributing to them great power. Although there are studies on both sides of the aisle, there are several scientific studies demonstrating an increased murder rate at the full moon. Hospital workers tell us that more babies are born during the full moon. Police say that they get more family violence calls.

The tension of the Grand Cross of December is moving away, but several of the planets involved are still caught in the dance. Mars (aggression, warfare) is moving away from a square to Saturn (discipline, leadership) and into an opposition with Jupiter (philosophy, overconfidence). (for more information on this powerful configuration you may want to read some of these articles). Difficult Mars/Jupiter aspects tend to create an atmosphere of arrogance and self-righteousness as Jupiter’s confidence creates a tension with the aggressive Mars energies. Watch for bombastic talk from people in the news, and in our personal lives we may find ourselves drawn into arguments over philosophy and religion as Mars approaches the exact opposition with Jupiter on January 14th.

Misty Neptune is drawn into this game as well and begins to confuse the issues. Neptune encourages self-sacrifice and martyrdom, and this could be a time where suicide attacks increase as the urge for martyrdom collides with religious arrogance, culminating on January 16 when Mars squares Neptune exactly and Jupiter is within one degree. In the middle of this falls the Full Moon in Cancer on January 14 at 4:47 am EST, personalizing the tension of the Mars/Neptune/Jupiter configuration. With the Moon in nurturing Cancer opposing the Capricorn Sun, there may be some tension between home life (Cancer) and career motivations (Capricorn). Cancer longs to stay close to home, and Capricorn works hard for public recognition.

This Full Moon makes no aspect to the other planets, showing that it will have a powerful effect this month, unhampered by other influences. Because Cancer is ruled by the Moon itself, this is likely to be a time of emotional flux, moodiness, and challenging dynamics in the home. Taking extra care to nourish and nurture family members during this time will help to bring out the best of this time.
