What’s eating Christian Bale?

Christian BaleChristian Bale, brilliant actor in the most recent Batman series, was in the news back in July of 2008 when it was reported that he “assaulted” his mother and sister (under English law an assault can be physical or verbal).  Now he is in the news again when audiotape of a violent rant just days before his arrest last summer against the director of photography for his new film Terminator Salvation was leaked to the press after being submitted to the film’s insurance company.

Unfortunately from an astrologer’s point of view, we don’t know the time of Christian Bale’s birth (January 30, 1974) because it is likely that Bale is experiencing planetary transits to the “angles” of his chart (the points that describe the way we relate to others and our career) that are defined by the moment of birth.  We also don’t know where his Moon is; if he was born before noon his Moon would be in Aries, and after noon it would be in Taurus.   But there is plenty of other information that we can glean from his chart to help to explain some of his behavior.

Christian Bale has the Sun in Aquarius, and he has a conjunction of Mercury to Jupiter in Aquarius as well.  I’ve been writing a lot about Aquarius in this column because for the past few months we have had a preponderance of planets in that sign. Aquarius is the sign of the inventor – of the eccentric, the renegade, and the fighter for social justice.  But Aquarius is exceptionally interesting in the chart of an individual because it is one of four signs with both an ancient and a modern ruler.  Its ancient ruler is Saturn, planet of social order and restriction.  Its modern ruler is Uranus, planet of rebellion and freedom.  These two planets are in opposition in the sky right now, and they are opposite in their very nature.  One wants to create structure (Saturn), the other wants to break it apart (Uranus).

Aquarians carry that complicated dynamic within them, and for Christian Bale that dynamic is particularly strong with three planets in that one sign.  On the one hand, he is a hard worker who understands the need to embrace his responsibility (he also has Saturn retrograde in his chart which suggests that he feels he has to work harder than anyone else in order to prove his worth).  On the other hand, he has his own ideas for how things should be done and resists the pressure of authority.  Mars (god of war and aggression) forms a square, a challenging aspect, to his Sun which reveals his heightened aggressive tendencies.  Mars is a bit of a bully when it is in conflict with other planets in the chart, and Mars also is widely square to Bale’s Mercury (mind) and Jupiter (confidence).  He has a tremendous amount of energy and if it’s not channeled properly this energy can erupt into anger and rage.

Last July when Bale was arrested for assault transiting Pluto (death and rebirth) was completing a challenging transit to Saturn in his birthchart, the planet that helps us to build structures in our life but can also cause us to feel that we’re not good enough.  Transiting Jupiter (confidence) was within a degree of a trine to Mars in his chart which would have opened the doors to his feeling he could express himself freely.

The timing of the release of this tape is very interesting, occurring just days before the Lunar Eclipse of February 9th that will oppose Jupiter and Mercury in Bale’s chart, perhaps changing his fortunes (Jupiter) forever.  Eclipses are known for their power to unmask that which is hidden and we have a vivid example of this phenomenon in this case!

Jupiter in Aquarius

I’m behind on several writing projects, including January’s Skywatch and an article on Jupiter’s upcoming entry into Aquarius which will take place on January 17. Jupiter changes signs every year or so, and while in Aquarius it will team up with Chiron and Neptune which ought to really be interesting and make for some major changes of consciousness!  But more on that later.  Meanwhile,  Kathryn Cassidy has written a nice piece on Jupiter in Aquarius, so I thought I’d share this while I’m getting my act together this weekend:

Jupiter in Aquarius is the one to watch this year as it correlates to a Jupiter/Uranus conjunction and this is one of the most unpredictable, life-changing mergers in the astrological pantheon. It’s the placement of the extraordinary, the radical, the revolutionary, the miraculous and the unbelievable – in both the positive and negative sense of the words.

The last time Jupiter was in Aquarius we saw all these adjectives put to use. The year was 1997 and it was simply unbelievable that Diana, Princess of Wales should be killed in a car crash; so totally unexpected a fate at that time in her life that we were all left reeling. A mass (AQ) outpouring of grief at her death (JU) united people across the globe. We were also shocked by the shooting of Gianni Versace in Miami.

It was in 1997 that Tony Blair stormed into power with his ‘New Labour’. This was an extraordinary defeat for the Conservatives and changed the face of Britain overnight. Meanwhile in the White House the words ‘unbelievable’ and ‘I’m shocked’ were undoubtedly being well used as rumours were swirling about the inappropriate relationship of the President, Bill Clinton with an intern called Monica Lewinsky*.

The Internet began its meteoric rise to world dominance and technology in general followed suit in ’97. It’s hard to believe that it is only in the last 12 year Jupiter cycle that surfing the World Wide Web has become such an integral part of our lives.

Aquarius is the sign of the masses and Jupiter relates to Space and ‘the beyond’. Billions of people were transfixed by the sight of Comet Hale-Bopp in the heavens in 1997 and in Phoenix, Arizona the Phoenix Lights phenomena reminded us that ‘the truth could still be out there’! The list goes on but the point is that 1997 was a pivotal year of extraordinary happenings and 2009 is likely to have a similarly radical impact on our culture and, for many of us with Leo, Scorpio and Taurus planets, in our personal lives too.

Skywatch for January 2010 is posted

Just in time for Jupiter’s entry into Aquarius tomorrow, here is the monthly planetary report from my website. There are some exciting planetary events coming up in January, including a solar eclipse on the 26th with a Mystic Rectangle!

Here’s the news for the upcoming week:
Venus has been traveling through Aquarius, but enters sensitive and emotional Pisces on the 3rd which places more emphasis on the feelings we share in relationships. There is a desire to be compassionate and connected now, and this is made easier by a sextile (harmonious aspect) from Venus to Pluto’s intensity. This sharpens the focus and helps us to clarify our relationships and our interactions with others.

On January 5, Jupiter enters Aquarius, where it will remain throughout the year. Jupiter is the planet of abundance and opportunity, and enjoys a positive reputation as a beneficial planet. In Aquarius, Jupiter brings an expansion of Aquarian innovation and creativity, as well as an increased consciousness of social justice and fairness to all that is a hallmark of the Aquarian influence. All astrological signatures, even Jupiter, carry a positive and a negative manifestation, and the dark side of Jupiter is a confident self-righteousness. Combined with the Aquarian urge for rational and unemotional improvement in the collective, there can be a depersonalization in this combination that can be unsettling at times.

While Jupiter is in Aquarius is will form a conjunction both to Chiron and Neptune, amplifying the need for healing (Chiron) and achieving harmony with the divine (Neptune). Watch these pages for a new article to be posted shortly on Jupiter in Aquarius.

The Full Moon on January 10th is in Cancer, with the Moon opposite the Capricorn Sun. Home and family life is

emphasized now under the sign of Cancer, and Saturn (stability and structure) forms a harmonious aspect to the lunar event with a trine to the Sun and sextile to the Moon. Uranus (innovation and that which is new) is involved as well, with a trine to the Moon and a sextile to the Sun. These four form a Mystic Rectangle (two oppositions and two sextiles). The Mystic Rectangle is a very positive aspect signifying balance and harmony – there is enough tension from the planets that oppose each other to energize the aspect, yet the sextiles offer a harmonious route to resolution.

This Full Moon, in the sign which it rules and is therefore most happy in, is a lovely time to honor our responsibilities to our loved ones, to create and enjoy a nurturing space within our home, to rediscover a family member who has perhaps been out of touch. Full Moons are periods of emotional fullness, and this Full Moon will be a beautiful time to open our hearts.

Mercury turns retrograde on January 11th where it will remain through January 31. Mercury Rx periods are famous for communication glitches and machinery failures. Often these are due to user error, as our brains function diffierently during the three weeks, four times a year, when Mercury is retrograde. If you must enter into a contract or begin a new job or project during this period, do everything you can ensure that all agreements are clear and in writing. Read all of your instruction manuals, and don’t be surprised if your phone messages don’t reach their intended destination. Just shrug your shoulders and laugh: “Mercury is retrograde!!” The Sun forms a trine to Saturn on that day which should offset some of the challenges with a nice clear focus.
