The Mars/Saturn conjunction 2012: how afraid should we be?

Mars Saturn conjunction

Astrologers love to forecast doom and gloom for some reason, and in today’s world of intense energy shifts and change many readers of things astrological tend to filter astrological information through their lens of fear.  I have a mission to dispel this astrological anxiety, and what better time to do this than now.

Mars and Saturn are nearing a conjunction (alignment) in the sky – they will be at the same degree of Libra on August 15th.  Traditional and Vedic astrology consider both Mars and Saturn to be “malefic” – they are seen as promoting danger (Mars) and generally bad things (Saturn).  So when the two come together, this can be perceived as a dangerous time where generally bad things can happen.

Even Richard Nolle, an astrologer I greatly respect, reports in his August forecast “it’s a time to be on the alert for danger due to the haste, recklessness or outright malice of others – including mass shootings and other especially heinous crimes. Be safety-conscious. Steer clear or conflict and danger as best you can.”

There’s no denying that we have seen more than our share of mass shootings over the past few months, but that has had more to do with the alignment of Mars with Uranus and Pluto which began when Mars entered Libra in early July.  Mars represents energy and desire, and when it began to trigger the square between Uranus (rebellion and revolution) and Pluto (destruction and regeneration) in mid-July a great deal of wildness was released into the general consciousness.

Mars and Saturn last united on July 31, 2010, also in Libra.  At the time Mars and Saturn were exactly opposite Uranus, and very close to an exact square to Pluto.  You would have thought that would have stimulated some extreme news, but the news at the time was much calmer than it had been in previous months when the Uranus/Pluto square made its first alignment in June.

This idea that Mars and Saturn are malefic in their nature is something that I am always arguing against.  If it weren’t for Mars we wouldn’t get out of bed in the morning.  Mars is the energy that motivates and excites us – it provides inspiration as well as desire.  When that inspiration and desire is thwarted, Mars can become angry and that can easily escalate into the rage that Mars is known for.  Saturn provides a container and structure for our lives.  It inspires us to make commitments and to set goals for the future.  Saturn’s lessons become difficult when we attempt to ignore the need for rules and structure – then we may get the proverbial bonk on the head from the Celestial Taskmaster.

So when these two planets come together it can be a wonderful thing.  Saturn rules Capricorn, and Mars is said to be exalted in Capricorn, the sign which shares Saturn’s love of rules and order and achievement.  So when Mars and Saturn come together there is the potential to create a container (Saturn) within which our desires (Mars) can take root and grow.  Still, Mars is in Libra which is the sign of its detriment.  In Libra Mars is more concerned with the needs of others which hinders its full expression, and the conjunction with Saturn can add additional repressive force that makes it difficult to put our plans and ideas into motion.

If we resist the structure that Saturn places around our desires, then frustration will occur. We may feel this within ourselves, but we may also feel that others are trying to frustrate and restrict us.  If we understand the nature of the planetary energies we will be better able to utilize this time for careful planning and focused action, instead of wild and unrestrained expressions of desire.

If we feel restricted, we often feel angry and resentful.  The Saturn effect here will limit our ability to express that anger and when anger is not given expression it can turn into rage or worse, become internalized as a health issue in the body.  Physical exercise is the best way to manage a strong Mars event such as this one as it helps to channel the Mars energy more constructively.

Relationships may be stressed during this time because Venus (planet of connecting and love) will be opposite Pluto (intensity and drama).  Watch for power struggles that bring out the Mars side of you, and try to ensure that Mars is expressed in a way that is useful.  Assert yourself appropriately where needed, and be sure that interpersonal combat is as constructive as possible so that it doesn’t degenerate into the emotional violence that we often see with Venus/Pluto.

Mars transits are strongest when they are approaching, so we are in the peak of its effect as I write this.  By the 20th of August or so Mars will have moved far enough away from Saturn that its expression will be unfettered once again.

As an aside, I think it’s an interesting coincidence that the Mars Rover “Curiosity” is landing on Mars just as this conjunction takes place.

Capricorn Full Moon: July 3, 2012

Capricorn Full Moonby Lynn Hayes

Today’s Full Moon has the potential to bring more than the usual fireworks for Independence Day here in the US.  The Moon is in the pragmatic and practical sign of Capricorn where planning and a solid approach to the matters at hand is required.  However, the Moon has just passed through the gates of Pluto which has intensified and magnified its energy, which means that the Moon has also faced off in a challenging aspect (square) to Uranus, inspiring resistance and rebellion.

Meanwhile Mars has just entered the sign of Libra.  When the planet of war moves through the sign of peace the aggressive instincts of Mars are not easily expressed.  There is an outward desire for harmony that belies the inner turmoil that will eventually require an outlet.  This conflicted Mars is preparing to get involved in the greater battle between Uranus and Pluto over the next two weeks and will serve as the trigger for any areas of life where change is needed.

Capricorn is all about Doing What It Takes to Get Things Done.  However, in the Full Moon the Capricorn Moon opposes the Cancerian Sun which takes us deeper into the realm of feelings and emotions, a realm which Capricorn would just as soon forget.  All Full Moons require that we balance energies that are in polarity with each other since the Sun is always in a sign that is opposite the sign the Moon falls in.  Here we are balancing the inner world with the outer – our home life with our work life,  our feelings with what we know must be done.

In any Full Moon, the lunar light of emotions and feelings outshines the solar light of rational thought and awareness, but in this Full Moon we have the Moon in the sign of earthly matters while the Sun is in the sign of feelings and emotions.  Don’t be surprised if there is a bit of a struggle between these two areas of life as we strive to integrate them into one cohesive and united experience of consciousness.  To live in the world in a practical manner (Capricorn) while remaining in full awareness of our inner feelings and connection to our tribe (Cancer) is the method to this lunar madness.

Uranus, the planet of radical change and innovation, squares the Sun and Moon in the chart for this Full Moon which suggests a radical departure from the old ways of thinking and an acceleration of personal development. This process is facilitated by a harmonious trine between Mercury (the mind) and Uranus (the higher mind) which helps to unlock our ability to understand the higher levels of awareness and gain greater perspective.

Venus is a great ally during this Full Moon since it forms tight harmonious sextiles to Mercury and Uranus, easing transition and encouraging interpersonal interactions that will help to facilitate the letting go and moving forward from past to future.

New Moon in Virgo, September 8 2010

from the Symbolon Tarot

The Virgo New Moon occurs Wednesday morning September 8th at 6:30 am Eastern (10:30 am GMT) on the heels of a beautiful aspect from Venus, the planet of love and beauty, to Chiron and Neptune. This Venus aspect has been opening up channels of love and creativity, assuring that old hurts can be more easily healed.

With the Sun and Moon conjunct in Virgo at the New Moon, the emphasis here is on the details of life, bringing us back to earth after this creative opening. Mercury is also in Virgo, traveling retrograde and creating potential snags in our desire to continue to move forward despite the doors that close to keep us retracing our steps and perfecting our progress. Virgo after all seeks a form of perfection that is not often found in this earthly life, and isn’t afraid to stand alone in its efforts to attain that perfection.

This New Moon stands alone in a different way: the lunation itself (the Sun and Moon combination) makes no aspect to any other planets. It is therefore more powerful and confers more energy in the initiation of new Virgo-type projects, such as a new health plan, exercise program, scheme to organize your home or office, clean up old emotional habits.

In Virgo the mind works to create order out of disarray, and with its ruler Mercury traveling retrograde we are encouraged (or we could say forced) pay close attention to ensure that our carefully constructed orderly plan does not go awry.  Mercury is in a harmonious trine to transformational Pluto the day of the New Moon which helps us to focus and let go of extraneous distractions.  There is also a trine from Mars and Venus, both in Libra and celebrating relationships, beauty and harmony, to Chiron and Neptune, the two teachers of healing and transcendent experience.  There is an opportunity in this New Moon to unlock our creativity, but also to open the doors of healing in relationships that need it.

New Moons are times of initiation and new beginnings, so let’s make this a time of conscious attention to detail and creating great order and perfection in our lives.

Mars and Saturn in Libra

Mars conjunct Saturn in Libra

For the next week or so we will be living with Mars and Saturn conjunct in Libra.

Libra is normally a lovely sign – it is concerned with fairness, equality, peace and harmony, beauty and an aesthetically pleasing environment.  But when Mars gets into Libra it likes to stir things up.  Mars is said to be in its detriment in Libra, and in Libra it tends to go underground.  Rather than be directly obnoxious, as Mars prefers to be, Mars in Libra covers its irritation and anger with a veneer of Libran polish so that it’s hard to really see the truth that lies beneath.

Here we have Saturn overseeing this process, making sure that we must face the cold hard reality of the truth, even though Mars in Libra is doing its best to obscure those facts.  Mars and Saturn working together are described as driving with the brakes on.  Mars wants to create action, and Saturn creates its famous delays.  Both are in Libra where action is difficult because all options are equally attractive.

However, Jupiter and Uranus are opposing Mars and Saturn and stirring the pot.  We want to act – we are almost desperate for some kind of change to take place (Jupiter/Uranus opposing Mars).  But Saturn is the enforcer right now.  If you are sending delays and blockages, sit back and wait until the time is right.  Make a solid plan (Saturn LOVES a good plan).  But stay creative – there’s lots of energy for change right now and it can happen in powerful ways!
