Mercury retrograde, and a Virgo Full Moon: February 2013

Virgo Full Moon February 2013Mercury turns retrograde today (February 23) and it’s time to go over the things we’ve done in the past in order to help perfect our future. Mercury is in Pisces now where it tends to be more adaptable and flexible and doesn’t mind reversing itself in order to improve the flow of our lives so this retrograde period may not be as difficult as some others.

Mercury turns retrograde for three weeks four times a year, so it is not a rare event.  I like to think of retrograde periods as being similar to ocean waves on a beach.  The ocean comes towards the shore, and then it retreats so that it can come once more – the ebb and flow of life.  We progress forwards in our life, marching towards the end of time, and then periodically we retreat, take a break, and re-evaluate that progress.  We correct the things that aren’t working, and improve the things that are.

While it’s true that Mercury retrograde periods are not great times to plan a vacation or make a major purchase, I confess I do these things all the time.  In my real estate business I can’t take off three weeks four times a year when Mercury turns retrograde, but if I have to sign a contract during that time I know to be prepared for renegotiations and reversals.

But Mercury retrograde is not the only news – we also have a Full Moon on February 25th in Virgo, the sign of practical reality and the body/mind/spirit system. I personally believe that Chiron is the modern ruler of Virgo because both share an attention to the balance between mental and spiritual health to the physical body. This emphasis on balance and healing is embedded in the chart of the Full Moon since the Sun and Moon are tightly linked to Chiron (the Sun conjoins Chiron and the Moon opposes it).

The Sun/Chiron combination is squared by Jupiter, planet of expansion and ideology which suggests that the concepts that underpin our reality are likely to be stretched at this time in order to accommodate the necessary healing process. With five planets in Pisces and Mercury retrograde, much of this will be operating through the subconscious and imaginal realms.

Venus enters Pisces just after the Full Moon, at which time there will be SIX PLANETS in Pisces. This is a very big lineup of planets in one sign, and several of them are trined by Saturn which helps to anchor the dreamy hopes and fantasies of Pisces. And of course the Virgo Moon desires order and grounding through ritual and established patterns of action. Mars is approaching a harmonious trine to the North Node now which helps to motivate us towards our highest good, despite the pull of the past.

In the Full Moon the lunar influence opposes the solar, and in this lunation Virgo opposes Pisces: the practical left-brain Virgo opposite the right-brain transcendence of Pisces. But Pisces is very heavily weighted here which could create some anxiety if an attempt is not made to ground the entire experience into something practical. Bring a pen and paper, or go for a walk in the woods and try if you can to stay away from technology during this Full Moon. This time is about going within and finding the rich experience of the inner landscape and that requires re-treat and re-juvenation, perfect for Mercury retrograde.

The Frankenstorm and the US Election

astrology of Hurricane SandyFirst let me say that after living in North Carolina for many years I always take the hysteria over hurricane predictions with a grain of salt.  Predictive models have improved over the years, but like human behavior, nature has a way of being unpredictable.

That said, it appears fairly certain that the big storm heading towards the Atlantic coast over the next couple of days will bring widespread power outages and communication breakdowns.  As I wrote this summer:

In addition, Mercury stations retrograde on the day of the election which suggests that once again the results of the election will be unclear. Mercury stationed direct (meaning it had already been retrograde and then came to a standstill the day of the election before traveling forward again) on the day of the 2000 election which was hung up by voting machine failures and hanging chads.  During this 2012 election Mercury will be preparing to retrograde and go back over old issues and questions just as the election begins.  Mercury will be in Sagittarius which is associated with the entertainment industry and the court system, which suggests that once again election results could go back to court.  Mercury will be in a square to Neptune for a week or so before and after the election, indicating not only confusion over election localities and voter registration, but also suspected fraud and illegal wranglings.

This hurricane will combine with a cold front to bring snow and high winds that can knock down trees and power lines.  After a major storm it can take over a week to bring power to rural areas.  After Hurricane Fran we were out of power for over two weeks in our neck of the woods.  With the election hinging on Ohio voters, power failures that extend into that state WILL create the kind of Mercury retrograde havoc that astrologers have been predicting.

The Washington DC chart for the Full Moon that culminates this afternoon is very interesting.   Chiron (wounding and healing) and  Neptune (transcendent experience), both in Pisces, straddle the Pisces ascendant.  This is a very watery emphasis, suggesting fluidity and motion but also potential confusion.  Chiron and Neptune have been within five degrees of each other for several years now, working together to heal old wounds so that humanity can continue to move forward.   This conjunction trines the conjunction of the Sun and Saturn which is very positive for effective handling of the crisis.

However, Mars sits right on the Midheaven at the top of the chart with Jupiter at the IC, a configuration I wrote about a few days ago.  Loud arguing and conflict over the handling of a potential crisis caused by the storm is likely to overcome any potential working together to create healing and community that Chiron and Neptune would like to accomplish with the Sun/Saturn combination.

The Universe moves in mysterious ways, but always towards balance.  Sometimes the road we must take to achieve that balance is not the road we were expecting, and all we can do is watch and wait.

Mercury retrograde roundup: Wild times

mercury retrogradeI knew this would be a tough Mercury Retrograde period when I wrote this post.  With Mercury and Uranus turning retrograde on the same day, we were bound to be in for some surprising (Uranus) twists of fate and weird events and we are certainly seeing that in some corners of the world, especially in the highly charged electrical atmosphere of yesterday’s Full Moon in Aquarius.

In my own personal world, this week I have (a) incorrectly scheduled a lunch date with a friend, (b) had a client forget his appointment, (b) scheduled a consultation for Eastern time when the client lived in Central time, (c) scheduled a consult for 11:30 PM instead of AM so it didn’t show up on my morning calendar, (d) had a service contractor attempt to repair something that wasn’t broken instead of something that was.

What’s happening in your world?

Planetary news this week: expect intensity

Storm Brewing by  Mikey Studios.  Rebellious Uranus in a challenging square to intensely transformational Pluto. Mercury and Uranus, the two planets of the mind, have just turned retrograde.  A coronal mass ejection from the Sun has hit the Earth’s magnetic field, causing alterations to the Earth’s magnetosphere and a spike in the planetary K index of geomagnetic activity (to a 6 at the time of this writing).

But wait, there’s more!

Jupiter is moving into an awkward aspect (quincunx) to Pluto this week.  This  is not a major aspect but can create some problems in light of all of these other dynamics occurring at the same time. Jupiter seeks expansion with confidence and a relentless optimism that can defy reality, and under this aspect Pluto will attempt to put a kibosh on any grandiosity that has no basis in reality and is likely to fail anyway.

This aspect culminates on the 18th, but meanwhile Mars will set off the awkwardness of this dynamic with several different interactions: a harmonious trine to Jupiter, enhancing the expansive desire to shake off any restrictions, a challenging square to Pluto – a defiant aspect that virtually ensures a major eruption of some kind, and a tense opposition to Uranus which radicalizes the experience and suggests a shocking shift of some kind which provides an outlet for the intense energy of this alignment.

Mars moves relatively quickly and its effects don’t last long, but it can serve as a trigger for greater and more powerful cycles.  With Uranus and Pluto moving towards another alignment this fall, the Mars influence is nothing to sneeze at.  Mars brings its aggressive urge and ramps up the energy, which we can utilize in our own lives if we channel it constructively through physical activity and other assertive activities.

The week of these dynamics, between the 14th and the New Moon on the 19th, are some of the most intense days of the summer. You can prepare by releasing your attachment to anything you think you know or your ideas of how things ought to be. This will help you to burn through any blocks and issues that are holding you back, and then this can be an exhilarating time of personal transformation.

Mercury and Uranus turn retrograde in tandem

Uranus retrogradeYou might want to read about the concept of “higher octave planets” if you missed that post before reading this one.

Uranus will turn retrograde early in the morning on the 14th EDT (late morning GMT) and Mercury will turn retrograde late in the evening EDT on the 15th (early morning on the 16th GMT).

Planets of course don’t really change direction, but astrology is person-centered. We are the center of our own universe, and that is how we observe the planets astrologically.  Sometimes the movement of the planets appears to retrograde from our perspective on earth, and during those times the operation of those planets functions differently, and usually in a more inward than outward fashion.

The outer planets are retrograde for about six months out of every year, and Mercury is retrograde for three weeks four times a year, so these events are not uncommon.  Still, they tend to arrive with a lot of weeping and moaning from the astrocommunity.

While it’s true that Mercury retrograde periods can be challenging for planning a trip, coordinating meetings, all kinds of communication equipment including email and voicemail, they are also valuable times to rethink any areas of life where additional processing is required.  Mercury rules the mind and the mental functioning as well as the transmission of information.  Mercury is involved in the learning process, as well as the method through which we communicate our understanding and in retrograde motion our knowledge and awareness of the interconnections in our universe can deepen past the superficial.

As the higher octave of Mercury, Uranus elevate the workings of the mind to a superconscious state.  The flashes of insight that come from scientific discovery or personal intuition – those moments of “Eureka” and “Aha” in which we suddenly are aware of a reality that is so absolutely true and certain, yet which has no basis in our previous awareness – this is Uranus at work.

As has been said over and over in this column, and will continue to be repeated for the next three years, Uranus and Pluto are locked in a challenging square at the moment.  The retrograde turn of Uranus during this cycle brings Uranus back towards the exact angle to Pluto that will continue to create more upheaval and release as the revolution, both internal and external, continues.

Ouranos was the sky god – from his viewpoint in the sky he could see all, and know all.  Thus the Uranian archetype expands Mercury and takes our ability to witness and observe to a higher level.  Under the Uranus influence we have a greater perspective and an ability to see the larger picture.

With both Mercury and Uranus turning retrograde within a day of each other, there is a powerful focus now on the way in which we translate what we see in the world into an understanding of it.  Any place in which we are blinded by emotion or a lack of reason will be highlighted now.

When Uranus is retrograde we tend to look more closely at areas of our life that need change.  When we’re in a time of great change such as we’re in right now, this can be enervating and inspiring.  It can also be somewhat terrifying if we stare too long into the abyss.  There is a lot of mind and mental activity right now, so any activity you can do to offset that headiness (yoga, swimming, meditation) will be very helpful.

Lynn’s Skywatch! Planetary Illuminations for July are posted

To get your own subscription, which includes a translation into simple English from the original astrologese, please sign up in the side bar or on my website here.

Meanwhile, here is the introduction to get you started:

As July begins, Venus has just turned direct and is moving forward again after her short retrograde period. The Transit of Venus is behind us, as is the first exact formation of the Uranus/Pluto square which actually began last year and will continue through 2014.

You can read more about the square formation between Uranus and Pluto here if this is new to you. The two planets are still only 17 minutes of arc from the exact alignment, and it will be the middle of July before they really begin to separate. So throughout the first few weeks of July expect for this conflict between the structures of the past (Pluto in Capricorn) and the new ideas and patterns of individual self-expression (Uranus in Aries) to continue, especially between the 11th and 22nd or so when Mars enters the picture and acts as a trigger for the unexpected to occur. More on that in the planetary details below.

The Uranus/Pluto dynamic is intensified by the fact that Uranus will turn retrograde mid-month so its motion has slowed to a standstill in preparation for the change of direction. When a planet changes direction its influence becomes more insistent, and with Uranus we are dealing with energies of surprise, radical changes and a journey into the unknown. Pluto is also retrograde now so both of these behemoths are urging us to look back over our lives to see where we have stalled the progress of our own evolution – where do we need to break free (Uranus), what do we need to let go of (Pluto).

Mercury will also turn retrograde this month, creating the usual communication snafus but providing us with opportunities to go back and perfect areas in our communication that have been lacking. Mercury retrograde is excellent for writers and is a good time to purge and release small reminders of the past that we can’t take into our future.

Throughout July we have a severe shortage of the earth element. Mars is just finishing its long journey through Virgo and once it moves into Libra on July 3rd there will be no planet in an earth sign other than Pluto. Earth is the element that provides stability and offers comfort and security. It will be difficult to ground the tremendous amount of energy that the Uranus/Pluto square is creating, so we will have to create and participate in our own grounding rituals. Spending time in the outdoors, gardening, communing with nature, and with our own body – all of these things will help us to counterbalance the lack of earth in the skies.

Communication systems go haywire: Mercury conjunct Uranus

by Lynn Hayes

Art by Chris Johanson

Mercury represents communication and the transmission of energy, and Uranus represents radical change, surprise, and innovation.  When these two planets get together, as they do nearly every year because of Mercury’s orbit pattern, things can get a little wonky.

When the conjunction of Mercury to Uranus coincides with a Mercury retrograde period as we just saw happen, things can get quite wonky indeed.  Some of you may be familiar with the story of Mike Daisey whose one-man show about the Apple factory in China was adapted for an episode of This American Life in January but then retracted on March 16th, two days before the second phase of the exact Mercury/Uranus conjunction and just after Mercury turned retrograde.  Re-tractions are just one of the thing Mercury Retrograde periods are good for as we turn our attention to the past and re-do anything that was not done right the first time.

Uranus is in charge of electricity and electromagnetic energy, and those of us who are more sensitive to this kind of energy may be having trouble sleeping, or feeling jittery.  Mercury and Uranus are both in fiery Aries now (Mercury dipped briefly back into Pisces while in its retrograde phase which is now over) and the intensity of the energy is amped up as a result.  Interpersonal communication may be more bizarre than usual.

Eric Francis commented on his Facebook page yesterday: “Has anyone noticed this energy in the air that it’s been difficult to keep a grip on the facts? I’ve had more fact checking issues in the past seven days than I’ve had in the rest of my journalism career combined.”  He went on to say, “.I own three electric guitars, and they all developed similar problems [a few weeks earlier]…it was so weird I started to speculate that a power surge had come through, or that solar flares were to blame.”

It may sound like an extended Mercury retrograde period, but this is all very Mercury/Uranus, as is any disruption (Uranus) to communication equipment (Mercury) and tornadoes and electrical storms such as the ones which spawned 100 tornadoes in 24 hours in the midwest last weekend.

Uranus can be somewhat reckless, and when combined with the communication aspect of Mercury we all may end up saying things that we wish we hadn’t, or feeling like  discussions are out of our control.  This is a great time for planning and developing new ideas, but not the best time to implement them.  That will be better left until the conjunction has passed next week.

The final phase of the Mercury Uranus conjunction culminates on April 22nd, and the personal intensity should settle down a bit after that.  On a broader level we will continue to see the level of unrest continue to build as the square between Uranus and Pluto peaks this summer.

Mars turns direct, April 13-15 2012

mars direct 2012Note: Planets are said to be “retrograde” when they appear to move backwards from our perspective on Earth.  They are not actually moving backwards, or “the wrong way” as a friend of mine likes to say.  And there is nothing “wrong” about retrogrades – it’s a normal planetary cycle. Retrograde periods help us to reassess and revisit areas of life that require more attention before we can move on with our lives, but for this reason they can be somewhat frustrating and demand attention.

Although Mars didn’t actually turn retrograde until January, its motion began to slow down in December 2011 marking the actual beginning of the retrograde period.  From my observations and from a practical standpoint, retrogrades begin when the planetary movement slows down in anticipation of the retrograde turn, and end after the planet has turned direct and picks up steam again.

In my own world this has been a particularly problematic time, especially with both Mercury and Mars retrograde at the same time.  While Mercury retrograde periods are rather frequent — usually we have four three-week periods in a year — Mars retro periods only occur every couple of years.

Managing these retrograde periods is rather like riding on a boat in choppy waters.  If you allow your body to move with the waves you tend not to get seasick, but if you resist the movement of the water you can become very sick indeed.  And even the most experienced of sailors can experience motion sickness if the rough waters continue for too long a period of time, and this is what many of us have experienced.

The stationary period of the Mars cycle begins April 13th and Mars turns direct on April 15th around 1 am EDT/4 am GMT.  While Mars is stationary over the next few days there could be a big release of any pent-up energy that has been building over the retrograde period.  I have read articles that suggest that any action is inadvisable during the Mars retro period, and in fact received personal advice to that effect from my dear friend Dharmaruci regarding my blog struggle.  I would argue that this really depends upon the nature of Mars in your own chart and how it is affected by the retro Mars.  For me, with Mars in Capricorn, the Mars station is exactly trine my own Mars and fueling my desire for action in a way that cannot be denied.

Mars by its very nature signifies a force that demands expression.  I have often written about “Mars problems” that create health issues when the aggressive force of Mars is denied expression and creates energetic blocks in the body.  Mars retrograde periods make the outer expression of that force more difficult but that doesn’t mean it’s not necessary.  Any force that has been withheld during the retro period is likely to burst forth with Mars turning direct so I advise physical activity during this time so that the energy of Mars can find a more balanced expression as the direct turn commences.

Mars has been opposite Neptune for the past week or so and because Neptune tends to obfuscate and cloud the directness of Martian expression things may still appear a bit fuzzy.  It will be another week or so before the Neptunian misty cloud lifts and during that time our desires and intentions may still be unclear.  This is a good time to wait before initiating action, but meanwhile prepare and plan in good Mars in Virgo fashion.  Remember Pluto has just turned retrograde so it will be the smaller things that make the difference!

Mercury and Mars and the Trayvon Martin case

revised with correct birthdate for Trayvon Martin. Being in the middle of my own personal maelstrom I didn’t even hear about the Trayvon Martin case until late last week.  Trayvon Martin was a 17-year old young man who was shot by George Zimmerman, an armed community watch volunteer, in Sanford Florida on February 26th.

Zimmerman claimed self-defense and was not arrested by police, and there was no investigation until the FBI stepped in on March 20th, shortly after Mercury turned retrograde on the 13th.  Mercury rules communication and its retrograde periods, when it appears to be traveling backwards, are often times when situations are revisited in order to find a new perspective.

Mars has been traveling retrograde since late December, creating tension and bringing aggression and assertive energy into the forefront of our consciousness.  Mars is the planet of drive, desire and anger – but also enthusiasm and motivation.  We NEED Mars to get out of bed in the morning, but when Mars is corrupted or repressed it can be unleashed in ways that are not helpful or comfortable.

George Zimmerman was born October 5, 1983 with the Sun in Libra bestowing a need to create harmony and peace in the world around him.  Yet he has a conjunction of Jupiter to Uranus, the two planets of liberation and freedom, in a challenging square to his Virgo Mars.  People with Mars in Virgo tend to be perfectionists: they see where their world needs to be changed and redefined and re-ordered for greater efficiency.  When Jupiter squares Mars there can be an overblown sense of confidence and assuredness in one’s own mission, and when Uranus squares Mars there is a fierce rebellion and desire to create change.  Mars in Virgo doesn’t really appreciate change – there is a tendency to cherish the security that comes from knowing that things will be predictable.  So Jupiter and Uranus are not particularly friendly to the Virgo Mars, and that is even less the case when they are locked in a challenging square formation.

When this dynamic combines with a Libra Sun who tries to mask all of this roiling conflict with a harmonious demeanor, you can get an explosion of anger and rage when that Mars is affected by a planetary transit and that is exactly what happened when the shooting occurred.  Transiting Uranus was in a nearly exact quincunx (150 degrees and before arguing with my use of this term please read this post) to his natal Mars, triggering a discomfort for which relief could not easily be found.

We know that Zimmerman had anger management issues: In 2005 he was arrested for interfering with an arrest with assault and battery on an officer, and that same year an ex-girlfriend filed a restraining order, claiming that he assaulted her. In 2005 Zimmerman’s progressed Uranus aligned exactly with his natal Jupiter, bringing the natal configuration to a head and inspiring a fierce need to explode out of any restrictions that would have been imposed on him.  And exacerbating this was a transit of Uranus in the sky, forming a challenging square to both the natal and the progressed combination.  Uranus transits demand that we pay attention and tend to create explosions of the repressed subconscious into the conscious mind where they must be acknowledged.  It’s easy to see how that would have triggered Zimmerman’s anger issues that were repressed by the Libra Sun.

Over the past few weeks this case has captured the attention of the nation as emblematic of the racism that still exists in this country.  Initial reports about the incident appeared to indict Zimmerman in cold-blooded murder with a racial motive.  With Uranus in an approaching square to Pluto, the planet of death and transformation, the revolutionary fervor that we saw last year when this cycle began is coming to a peak this summer and needs only a case like this to trigger widespread reaction.

Characteristic of the Mercury retrograde period we are currently in, a recent news article reports that much of what Zimmerman reported to police has been corroborated by witnesses.  Mars is at a virtual standstill right now in preparation to turn direct on April 14th and it will only travel about three degrees between now and the middle of May.  With Mars at a standstill, or “station,” its aggressive energy will force itself to the forefront of human experience so that it must be dealt with.  Right now Mars is part of the Grand Trine which tends to promote ease and lacks the power to generate much conflict.

It’s interesting that at the time around March 20-22nd when the investigations into this case began, Mars in the sky was exactly opposite Chiron, the planet of wounding and healing.  Chiron demands that we examine the root of the wound, and Mars stimulated that examination.  Mars will next oppose Chiron in mid to late May, at the time the Uranus/Pluto square is beginning to tighten.  I would watch that time for an explosion of protests in a number of different areas, but likely also regarding issues surrounding this case.

And what about Trayvon Martin’s chart – does it show someone who, as Zimmerman asserts, would assault a complete stranger in a public place at 7 pm?  With the Sun conjunct Mercury in Aquarius, Trayvon was a bright boy, and likely one that was easily bored.  Uranus, planet of rebellion, rules Aquarius and he would not have been a follower by nature, someone who steps in line when others tell him too.

Mars was opposite his Sun (though wide of Mercury), and his Mars was in Leo where it is boisterous and dramatic and driven (Mars) to shine and be admired and respected by others (Leo).  Mars was retrograde in the chart, making its expression more difficult and this could have created an experience of resentment and an inability to speak his mind when necessary.

His Moon was in Taurus and likely trine his Venus in Capricorn, so he was also grounded in his responsibilities towards others.  There is no water in this chart, so he likely lacked empathy and would have found it difficult to understand the feelings of others.

This is the chart of a rebel, but there’s not the kind of rage in this chart that we see in the chart of George Zimmerman.  Just before the shooting transisting Chiron squared his Sun, amplifying any wounds or emotional triggers that he may have had and that would have still be in in effect at the time of the shooting.

This is the chart of someone who would have been rebellious and sullen and who resisted being stopped by a self-appointed community watch vigilante with an attitude.  It’s hard to see this chart as someone who would attack another person out of the blue for no reason, although we CAN see that lack of impulse control in Zimmerman’s chart.

Sunday inspiration for Mercury Retrograde

Dr. Suess

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

Dr. Seuss

We can think of Mercury Retrograde periods as times when we look through the wrong end of the telescope.  This can seem to us like a “mistake,” or we can take another view and find richness in the experience of a different perspective.
