Mars turns direct, April 13-15 2012

mars direct 2012Note: Planets are said to be “retrograde” when they appear to move backwards from our perspective on Earth.  They are not actually moving backwards, or “the wrong way” as a friend of mine likes to say.  And there is nothing “wrong” about retrogrades – it’s a normal planetary cycle. Retrograde periods help us to reassess and revisit areas of life that require more attention before we can move on with our lives, but for this reason they can be somewhat frustrating and demand attention.

Although Mars didn’t actually turn retrograde until January, its motion began to slow down in December 2011 marking the actual beginning of the retrograde period.  From my observations and from a practical standpoint, retrogrades begin when the planetary movement slows down in anticipation of the retrograde turn, and end after the planet has turned direct and picks up steam again.

In my own world this has been a particularly problematic time, especially with both Mercury and Mars retrograde at the same time.  While Mercury retrograde periods are rather frequent — usually we have four three-week periods in a year — Mars retro periods only occur every couple of years.

Managing these retrograde periods is rather like riding on a boat in choppy waters.  If you allow your body to move with the waves you tend not to get seasick, but if you resist the movement of the water you can become very sick indeed.  And even the most experienced of sailors can experience motion sickness if the rough waters continue for too long a period of time, and this is what many of us have experienced.

The stationary period of the Mars cycle begins April 13th and Mars turns direct on April 15th around 1 am EDT/4 am GMT.  While Mars is stationary over the next few days there could be a big release of any pent-up energy that has been building over the retrograde period.  I have read articles that suggest that any action is inadvisable during the Mars retro period, and in fact received personal advice to that effect from my dear friend Dharmaruci regarding my blog struggle.  I would argue that this really depends upon the nature of Mars in your own chart and how it is affected by the retro Mars.  For me, with Mars in Capricorn, the Mars station is exactly trine my own Mars and fueling my desire for action in a way that cannot be denied.

Mars by its very nature signifies a force that demands expression.  I have often written about “Mars problems” that create health issues when the aggressive force of Mars is denied expression and creates energetic blocks in the body.  Mars retrograde periods make the outer expression of that force more difficult but that doesn’t mean it’s not necessary.  Any force that has been withheld during the retro period is likely to burst forth with Mars turning direct so I advise physical activity during this time so that the energy of Mars can find a more balanced expression as the direct turn commences.

Mars has been opposite Neptune for the past week or so and because Neptune tends to obfuscate and cloud the directness of Martian expression things may still appear a bit fuzzy.  It will be another week or so before the Neptunian misty cloud lifts and during that time our desires and intentions may still be unclear.  This is a good time to wait before initiating action, but meanwhile prepare and plan in good Mars in Virgo fashion.  Remember Pluto has just turned retrograde so it will be the smaller things that make the difference!

Pluto retrograde hits the stock market

The US stock markets saw their steepest declines of the year today after a week of downward movement as Pluto slowed down to a crawl in preparation to turn retrograde today.

A very brief (5 minute) study disproved my initial theory that Pluto retrograde events correlated with a downturn in the stock market.  But every market period is different and brings with it unique combinations of planetary energies that affect investors in different ways.

The stock market has been on an upswing since November, buoyed by the perception that the financial crisis is ending.  But Mars is opposing Neptune now, and the drive to achieve and to do (Mars) is clouded by Neptunian disillusionment and confusion, which has likely made the approaching Plutonic dynamic seem overly dark and scary.

Pluto is stationing right now – it won’t actually turn retrograde until the 11th.  The opposition of Mars to Neptune will continue over the next week as Mars itself stations and turns direct, at which point we will see more forward movement in every area of our lives.

Meanwhile, this is probably a time to pull back and adopt a “wait and see” attitude before jumping into the markets.  With all of these reversals it will take some time for the truth to filter through the illusion and reality to set in.

Astrology in my world: Mars, Pluto and the Astrological Musings blog

If you’re on my mailing list you received an announcement about the change to this blog, but some of you have emailed me wanting to know what has happened so here’s the scoop (the abbreviated version):

Many of you have been with me since the beginning in 2005 when I was on the Blogger platform.  In 2007 I was contacted by Beliefnet who wanted to carry my blog on their site, and in 2008 I agreed and signed a contract with them.  They pulled the RSS feed of all of my posts at that time.

As some of you know, over time the advertising on Beliefnet became more and more offensive and I started carrying an ad-free copy of the blog on my own website.  Last year Patheos contacted me about moving my blog to their site, and in January of this year I made the decision to move to Patheos. (Mars was stationing before turning retrograde but it was about a week from the retrograde turn.)

Everything was going fine until Patheos received a threatening letter from Beliefnet attorneys stating that they OWN the trademark and the blog Astrological Musings.  Rather than provide me with an opportunity to defend this charge, Patheos followed the advice of their attorneys and took the blog down.

Of course all of this is occurring with both Mars (aggression and defense) and Pluto (destruction and nuclear warfare) stationary in the sky, forcing latent conflicts into the open where they must be fought.

I have filed for the trademark Astrological Musings and have sent a letter to the Beliefnet attorneys but in the meantime Beliefnet has hired another writer to write Astrological Musings on their site.  It’s hard to say how much effect my letter to Beliefnet will have – after all, I am just a tiny fish and Beliefnet is a large corporation with a phalanx of lawyers on staff.

It doesn’t really matter – and other than fighting for the principle of the matter it’s the writing that’s the point here at this blog – there are plenty of other sites that incorporate “Astrological Musings” into the title.  Transiting Uranus (innovation and change) is in an exact trine to my progressed Ascendant (my evolving persona in the world) this week, so there is a sense of liberation here and freedom for greater self-expression.

So I thank you for your support, and for continuing to find this blog no matter where it lives!

Pluto turns retrograde April 10th

Pluto retrogradeI don’t know where this image came from but I found it here.

Having just completed a retrograde turn of Mercury, and just coming out of the retrograde period of Mars, you may not be overjoyed to learn that now Pluto will turn retrograde. However, like everything else astrological, retrograde Pluto serves a higher purpose.

The outer planets travel retrograde for about six months every year, and for the last 30 years or so they have been retrograde in the summer (northern hemisphere). When a planet changes direction it is like a car that makes a U-turn, it’s motion appears to slow down and it becomes what we call “stationary” in the sky. Pluto has only moved two degrees since January and it will remain between 7 and 9 degrees Capricorn until the end of the year.

No planet is better at completing old patterns and clearing away the leftover detritus than Pluto, and when Pluto is retrograde, as it is for about half the year, we are forced to look backwards at our successes, our mistakes, our plans, our relationships – anything in our lives that has unfinished business will be re-examined during this time and anything that we are carrying around that is no longer needed will be swept away like the pollen after a rain.

Pluto is the planet of destruction and regeneration, and it also deals with issues of power and its uses. Its not surprising that now, with Pluto having been stationary in the sky (from our perspective here on earth) for the past few weeks as it prepared to change direction, things have been so intense for so many of us. When a planet is stationary it shines a laser-like beam of energy that reflects the energy of the planetary symbolism, and Pluto is all about intensity and getting to the root of the matter.

In addition, the challenging square between Uranus (revolution) and Pluto (destruction) culminates this summer at 8 degrees Capricorn. This phase of the cycle will be particularly challenging for those of us with planets between 5 and 15 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Cancer and Capricorn) as we are forced to let go of the old (Pluto in Capricorn) and allow ourselves to be infused with the new energetic force (Uranus in Aries) that is bursting through at this time.

We will most easily manage this time if we stop holding onto the past and learn to trust the future. The Universe strives for balance, and as we let go of the aspects of our life that are decaying we will find a fresh new beauty in our lives.

Pluto retrograde, April-September 2011

Pluto retrogradeAs we know, astrology is not astronomically correct and planets don’t really move backwards. But occasionally from our perspective the apparent direction of their movement changes, which we call “retrograde.”

Most of us are familiar by now with Mercury retrograde periods, which (because Mercury is the messenger planet and deals with all kinds of communication and communication devices) tend to bring about communication glitches and endless renegotiations of contracts.  Even people who don’t “believe in” astrology know that when Mercury is retrograde, things are just different.

This doesn’t mean, though, that retrograde periods are “bad.”  The sort of “two steps forward, one step back” flow of life that we experience during retrogrades are essential for cleaning up old messes, perfecting projects, re-establishing friendships – anything that involves going back over an event that has already occurred to be sure we are finished with it.

If Pluto is transiting your chart, as it is mine at this very moment, this laser-like beam may feel like a razor blade, cutting through any unnecessary claptrap that keeps us from delving to the core of the issue at hand.  Anywhere we are not honoring ourselves truly – any relationship that disempowers us – any old emotional pattern that no longer serves us will be excavated as we are taken into Pluto’s underworld during this time.

Retrograde Pluto offers an opportunity rather than a punishment – an opportunity to clean out the basement of our lives so that when this project is finished we can enjoy our lives that much more.

Pluto retrograde and a new nuclear arms pact

As I wrote a few days ago, “Pluto is associated with war of the nuclear type” so it is an interesting synchronicity of timing that just as Pluto changed direction to retrograde, President Obama of the US and President Medvedev of Russia signed a historic arms control treaty, hoping to reverse the challenging relationship between the two superpowers and to reduce the number of nuclear arms stockpiled by both nations.

Retrograde periods of any planet tend to turn our attention to the past and to any areas of our lives that need repair or rebuilding.   The treaty that George Bush signed in 2002 allowed 2200 strategic warheads; the new treaty would deploy no more than 1550 warheads for each country.   There are big loopholes in the treaty but it re-establishes an inspection regime (Saturn retrograding back into Virgo) to “bring the two countries back into a legal framework after years of tension.”  Source: NYT.

Pluto prepares to retrograde and another earthquake

earth changesHappy Monday Morning!

A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Mexico and California yesterday, a force equivalent to the earthquake that struck Haiti earlier this year.  This quake occurred right on schedule according to astrologer Richard Nolle who predicted an upsurge in seismic activity during the March 27-April 5 time period around the Libra Full Moon.  Richard has long written that when the Moon is at perigee (closest to the earth) her influence is more powerful and more likely to induce seismic activity and we have certainly seen that over the last couple of months.

In other news, Pluto has slowed down to a standstill in preparation for its retrograde turn on April 6th.  When a planet changes direction it tends to have a more powerful influence, and because Pluto’s domain includes issues of power and secrets, expect over the next few months to see revelations of secrets that have long been buried such as the acceleration of victims of sexual abuse by priests coming forward over the past weeks.

Because Pluto is in Capricorn, where it is restructuring the foundations of our societies, we are likely to see some reversals in decisions that have occurred since November when Pluto was last retrograde, especially in the banking industry and in governments around the world.  I have long suspected that in Capricorn, the sign representing the solid foundations on which we build our lives, Pluto would bring earthquakes and other kinds of earth changes, and this seems to be occurring as I suspected.

In our personal lives we will be asked once again to eliminate anything that no longer serves us.  Pluto spends nearly six months retrograde out of every year, and these are often periods of self-examination and personal transformation. This is a great time for housecleaning of all kinds:  Clearing out the debris of our lives that we have been hanging on to “just in case” – from our closets, and from our psyche.

Pluto is also associated with warfare of the nuclear type – conflict that is so extreme that it creates permanent transformation.  It is not uncommon to see an escalation of violence when Pluto stations (slows down to a standstill) before a change of direction, and we have certainly seen that over the weekend.  Suicide bombings in Baghdad, in Russia, attacks in Pakistan, threats against governors in the US  - expect to see this kind of thing continue over the next few days.  Pluto is not violence for the sake of violence alone, but to expose fissures that need attention.

If Pluto is transiting our own chart right now this will feel somewhat intense.  Just remember that Pluto’s job is to teach the nature of power, and to force us to look at the unpleasant things we usually try to avoid.  If you experience this, just assemble your courage and investigate.  The rewards of doing so will be well worth the stress!

Pluto changes direction today, September 11, and Astrology in my world

Today is the anniversary of the September 11 attacks, but it’s also the day that Pluto changes direction.  Planets don’t really move backwards, but they appear to do so because we observe their motions from our vantage point here on earth.  When they do, we call that “retrograde motion” and Pluto has been retrograde since early April of this year.

Pluto was the god of the Underworld, and he takes that role astrologically as well.  He brings us into the realm of the subconscious, the dark and frightening, the secret rage and desire and shadowy obsessions that lurk beneath the Sun of the conscious Self.  But Pluto has another role as well: aligning our intentions and our Will with our higher self.  He is a god, after all.

Our fear of Pluto correlates with our concept of the Underworld.  Some writers call Pluto the “Lord of Hell.”  But the Underworld that Pluto presided over was not a hellish place.  The dead and the living commingled there and communicated with each other.  In addition, Pluto had another role in Roman mythology – he was also the god of wealth that came in the form of gold, silver, and other treasures that were mined from beneath the surface of the Earth.  So we have a correlation here of gifts and divine treasures that are provided by Pluto when we have the courage to enter the Underworld.

Pluto transits can be hell, and they can also be divine experiences of the empowerment of the soul.  For at its core, Pluto is the god of ultimate Power.  Where Mars rules war, Pluto rules nuclear war.  But while Pluto’s power is destructive, it is also the power of the Soul to transform us in an alchemical process that burns off anything which is holding us back so that we can begin anew.

I won’t repeat the astrology of the September 11 attacks here, you can read about that in my earlier article.  Suffice it to say, though, that Pluto was exactly conjunct the Ascendant of the US astrological chart, signifying a total transformation (Pluto) of the identity of the nation (Ascendant).  Geeky astrological detail:  I use the Sagittarius rising “Sibley” chart for the US and it is certainly supported by the astrology of September 11. Pluto was also in opposition formation to Saturn at the time and a faceoff between the Lord of Karma (Saturn) and the Lord of Death (Pluto) is rarely pleasant.

When Pluto travels retrograde, which it does every year along with the other two outer planets Uranus and Neptune, it can be difficult to get things moving.  Retrograde planets turn our attention backwards – it’s more about going over old ground than starting something new.  Now that Pluto will be heading in the right direction again we are likely to start seeing some progress both in our personal lives and in the structures of government that have been affected so greatly by Pluto’s shift into Capricorn.

For me personally this station of Pluto (as Pluto prepares to turn direct it slows down to a crawl and almost stops)  has been particularly intense because it is sitting right on my Capricorn Mars.  I wrote about this last spring when Pluto made its second of what was to be a total of four hits to my Mars.  During the third phase, I ended up in the emergency room in Sedona with severe abdominal pain (Mars is tied to the solar plexus and Pluto was rooting out a lot of old issues).  But I also got the Beliefnet gig at that time which has expanded my reach and visibility, empowering me in my work.  This is what Pluto really wants – to empower us at the highest level.

I confess I looked forward to this Pluto station at zero degrees, exactly on my Mars, with trepidation. I planned a light client week and plenty of time at home for yoga and meditation.  But apart from experiencing a deep and intense energy that is keeping me awake, I haven’t experienced any life challenges or physical problems so I suspect I’m in the clear now.

Which leads me to my final point, which is that planetary transits do not always bring about the same result which is why we can’t predict the future with any specificity.  The experience of the final phase of a transit cycle depends upon what happens in the first phases, and how well we are integrating the experience of that planet.  Pluto wants us to be empowered and fully connected to our higher self.  If we’re not, we might get creamed.  If we’re holding back from expressing our power fully, or locked in fear (which we hold in our solar plexus), then like me last summer, we may end up in the emergency room with abdominal pain.

I’ll end this rather long post with my favorite Pluto comparison.  Years ago when I lived in Colorado we used to go tubing in the white water creeks.  I am not good at surrendering now and I was even worse then, so when the fast-moving water started carrying me in the tube I reached out to try to hold onto the brush that lined the bank of the creek.  I soon realized that every time I tried to hold on I would get smashed against the rocks, but if I just let go the current of the creek took me through the path of least resistance and I had a marvelous time. Pluto transits are exactly like this.  There’s no way to control them, we can only relax and enjoy the ride and trust that we are being carried in exactly the right direction for our ultimate soul path.

Thoughts on Pluto as it retrogrades today

Willow ArleneaArt by Willow Arlenea. Pluto has been slowing down for the past month or so in preparation for making its station, and we have seen a dramatic increase of violent acts including several mass murders during that period, particularly around the time of the New Moon in Aries.  Planets don’t actually move backwards, but because in astrology we look at the movement of the planets from car it is not astronomically correct.  Astrology places the human being at the center of the universe and analyzes planetary motion from that perspective.

When a planet is preparing to change direction it slows down, just as a car must slow down before it makes a U-turn.  At a certain point it is said to be “stationary”, and it is most stationary on the day that it changes direction, which in Pluto’s case is today.

Pluto, despite its small size, is dramatically powerful in astrological terms and it’s easy to become afraid of its usually intense effects.  But if we take a longer view of the planetary influence Pluto doesn’t have to be frightening.  Pluto seeks nothing less than total transformation and the elimination of anything that is no longer serving us, and the changes that occur under Pluto events, even though they may be very difficult, always change us for the better.  It was Pluto who wrote the old adage, “That which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger.”

When Pluto is powerful in our life, either in our natal chart or when Pluto is affecting one of the planets in our chart by transit, we have lost control.  There is no solution but to let go.  I always tell the story (and forgive me if you’ve heard this one before) of the first time I went tubing when I lived in Colorado.  The guide said to keep all of your limbs inside the tube and let the water carry you, but I was too frightened so I kept trying to reach out for the rocks, trying to slow down my travels, which resulted in the tube being smashed against the rocks.  When I finally did let go, the tube was able to travel the path of least resistance through the water and I had a glorious ride.

But Pluto also requires that we become empowered.  It’s not enough just to let go if we allow ourselves to be weakened.  Pluto often pits us in circumstances where we must fight – for our money, for our job, for our family, for our life sometimes. There are often power struggles and battles for dominance.  We can’t control the circumstances, but we can control our choices and how we will react to those circumstances.  Pluto asks, where in your life have you allowed yourself to be diminished?  What in your life isn’t working for you?

Pluto also can bring out our compulsive and hidden behaviors, and dredge up old memories to be processed and released.  Unlike Chiron, which reveals the actual emotional experience, Pluto sometimes goes into the depth of the soul and forces us to confront the original source.  Repressed memories, sexual compulsions – during Pluto cycles we may find ourselves facing a dark side of ourselves that we prefer to keep safely in the basement.  Pluto demands nothing less than the absolute Truth.

When Pluto entered Capricorn last year it was a bit of a psychic shock after the glee of the Sagittarius cycle (1995-2008).  It has taken a while for the general population to get used to this new and more contracted experience, but gradually we are starting to see an adjustment.  The retrograde passage of Pluto will slow down this adjustment as Pluto completes its work through the early degrees of Capricorn.  Capricorn is the reality check – which structures in our life are solid, and which are based on whimsy?  Anything built on shifting sands will not survive the Pluto in Capricorn period.

Venus is tightly involved with Pluto this year as well as she squares Pluto three times during the retrograde cycles of both planets.  Venus presides over the way we relate to others as well as our personal values and how well we value ourselves.  Over the past few weeks since Venus began her retrograde cycle I’ve been seeing more clients dealing with relationship issues.  Some have been avoiding relationships – others have marriages that have been failing for years and need resuscitation.  Relationships are a critical part of our spiritual growth – they are often the crucible in which our spiritual evolution is processed. In the mirror of the Other, we see ourselves more clearly.  This kind of soul work does not require a husband or a wife; the intimate interaction between souls can occur between any humans on any level.

Venus made the first square to Pluto in early February at 2 degrees Aries/Capricorn.  The second square to Pluto occurred yesterday (Friday) at 3 degrees, and the final square in the cycle will take place in early May at 3 degrees.  There’s no question that this Venus/Pluto cycle will challenge relationships, but there is a purpose behind the challenge – anything that is not working in our relationships will be brought to the forefront.  There are likely to be power struggles, and the need to accept that which is behind us and that which is lost.

There is also the need to balance the needs of the Self relative to the needs of the Other, and this will be highlighted at the Full Moon in Libra on April 9th.  Over the next week this need for balance will become more obvious as we enter the shadow of the Full Moon.  It’s a delicate balancing act, but one worth mastering as we work with the shamanic process of Pluto to strengthen and empower our souls as they learn the dance of partnership.

Skywatch for April is posted!

SkywatchYou can read the whole article on my website, but here’s the info for the first few days of April:

The first week in April we are building towards a challenging square of Venus to Pluto that is a new peak for the tension that began with the Aries New Moon on March 26th which also formed a square to Pluto. Pluto is the planet represented by the Underworld, and the presence of Pluto typically signifies a deepening of the intensity with which we approach the day-to-day matters of our life.

The planets that have been challenging Pluto over the past week are in the fiery sign Aries which is impulsive and highly energized. Rather than a slow burn, Aries explodes and then the fire fizzles out quickly. Venus, representing relationships and the things we value, has turned retrograde and is passing back through Aries where it is causing us to look back at unfinished business.

The first square of Venus to Pluto in this waxing cycle occurred in early February and any issues raised at that time will be brought up again by the second square on the 3rd. This is a good time to willingly explore the issues in our relationships that give us problems, as the door to the underworld of hidden meanings and motivations is open now. If we don?t pass through the door willingly, we may be pulled in there anyway by the intensity of this dynamic. The waxing square is an opportunity to learn something new ? to begin a new cycle of evolution.

Pluto will be turning retrograde on April 4, so it is at a stationary point in its cycle where its motion is imperceptible and it appears to be at a standstill. Planets are at their most powerful when at their ?station,? as they gather the strength needed to change direction. If Pluto is prominent in our charts, or if we are going through a Pluto transit to our own birthchart, we are likely to experience life at a more intense level than usual, with more of a sense of urgency.

On the 4th, as Pluto changes direction to travel retrograde, Mercury will form a sextile to Jupiter, a harmonious aspect that facilitates our mental understanding (Mercury) by providing us with a more expansive viewpoint (Jupiter). This will help to facilitate the Pluto process of getting to the root of the matters in which we are involved.

Also on the 4th, Mars will oppose Saturn in a face off that pits our individual desires (Mars) against our responsibilities and the requirement that we respect authority (Saturn). Mars is in compassionate Pisces now where it does not have the advantage of being able to utilize all of its tools of warfare and when stressed, there may be a temptation to slip into more passive-aggressive behavior rather than confront problems openly. Try not to succumb to this temptation, because Pluto is ruling this time period and demands that we are as honest and true in our actions as we can possibly be. We are likely to feel that our impulse to action (Mars) is slowed for a few days, and that is absolutely normal under the Saturn influence.
