Jupiter opposes Saturn this week: the Jupiter/Saturn cycle

Jupiter opposes Saturn on May 23, bringing its expansive qualities to the already tumultuous divisions between Saturn and Uranus, a larger planetary cycle that has been in operation since the fall of 2008.

Jupiter and Saturn are oppositional forces.  Jupiter expands, Saturn contracts.  Jupiter is optimistic, Saturn is pessimistic (although it prefers to think of itself as “realistic”).  I should say, Saturn IS realistic, but compared to Jupiter is SEEMS pessimistic.

The 20-year Jupiter cycle is used by mundane astrologers to forecast political events as the two planets cycle through conjunctions in one element for about 200 years and then transition into the next.  (See Richard Nolle’s excellent table for 3,000 years’ worth of data.)

Since 1980 we have been in the transitional period between elements.  The last Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in Earth was in 1961, and the conjunction in 1980-1981 transitioned into air, moving  back into Earth for the conjunction in 2000.  The 2020 conjunction will take place in the air element. We are therefore at the end of the transitional period between earth and air.

Robert Blaschke writes:  ”When Jupiter and Saturn conjoin in the earth element, societal infrastructure evolves globally and there is substantial wealth creation, along with extensive land settlement and territorial disputes.  The earth cycle began in 1802 and we can certainly see that this was in play.  We are now transitioning between earth and air, and Robert writes:  ”[Jupiter/Saturn c]onjunctions in the air element historically correspond with rapid social progress, significant intellectual development, and new concepts entering into human consciousness. ”  I would add that with the air element there is a growing focus on fairness and equality, and we are in a transitional period between the Piscean age and the Aquarian age as well as a new Jupiter/Saturn cycle.

In any case, we are at the midpoint of the current 20-year cycle which is the final transition into a 200-year air cycle.  The opposition phase of a planetary cycle is like the Full Moon in the lunar cycle: it is the climax of the cycle and the culmination of the waxing phase before the waning phase begins a completion of the cycle.

It is said that because Jupiter is expansive by nature, it rules the expansive waxing phase with Saturn ruling the contracting waning phase.  This construct is often used in financial astrology, but it competes with other planetary cycles that may have more authority.  For example, the 1990s marked the waning phase of the Jupiter/Saturn cycle but was a decade of tremendous economic growth thanks to Pluto’s travels through Jupiter’s sign of Sagittarius.

The current opposition cycle will have three stages and will conclude in March of 2011.  Because this cycle aligns with the final phase of the opposition to Saturn and Uranus that has brought about so much polarity, it will serve simply to intensify the sense of extremism before the need for balance is brought into the equation.  We will likely see a sense of balance return in the fall after the Saturn/Uranus cycle is concluded.

The Saturn/Uranus opposition: Hung parliament in Britain

This will be interesting to watch in light of the absolute failure in the United States to have any kind of coalition or consensus between Democrats and Republicans.

Graphic of possible hung parliament scenarios

Thanks to BBC News for this table. Oppositions require balance and integration, and in order to accomplish that each end of the scale needs to take on characteristics of the other.  Finding common ground is an important first step to finding balance in an opposition.  Let’s see if this can actually be done in politics!

Scorpio Full Moon, April 27

The Scorpio Full Moon on April 28th features a number of powerful aspects and this lunar event is likely to carry a fair amount of intensity with it.  Scorpio is the sign of intensity and passion – under the Scorpio influence we reach deep into the underworld of emotions to where our feelings are raw and true.  This is no time for superficiality!

The Full Moon occurs when the Sun is opposite the Moon, and brings about the need for balance and integration. Here the centerpoint occurs between the peaceful harmony and stability of Taurus and the fiery emotional depth of Scorpio.  With any opposition, integration is required as the two opposite ends of the spectrum seek expression.  While we penetrate deep into the realm of feeling (Scorpio), we also require a sense of balance and serenity (Taurus) in order to gain the true power of this Full Moon.

This Full Moon features a “T-square” with a conjunction of Mercury to the Sun, suggesting that the mind is to be fully engaged at this time with reason and that understanding playing a key part in the dance.

A square of Mars to the Sun/Mercury conjunction on the one side, and the Scorpio Moon on the other, completes the T-square with a powerful burst of energy and aggression. Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio and this tight aspect to the lunation heightens the emotional intensity that is present at that time.

Under this Mars influence we may become aware of hidden causes of anger and frustration, and this is the time to recognize these feelings and bring them into our conscious awareness.

The opposition from Saturn to Uranus is still nearly exact, hinting that the aggression that lies at the heart of this Full Moon will stem from any imbalance that occurs between the restrictive principle (Saturn) and the principle of change (Uranus).

Fortunately, Pluto interacts harmoniously with the lunation to ensure that we process deeply anything that we need to learn at this time and that we find the inner courage and personal power that’s needed now.  This Full Moon energy will be strong for the next few days, and within the intensity is a power that can be harnessed and put to good use!

Uranus in Aries – the battle over gun control

It could be said that a keyword phrase for Uranus is:  ”Rules?  We don’t need no stinkin’ rules.”  Uranus is all about breaking the rules – fighting for independence, the right to make one’s own decisions and not be hampered by any external force.  Aries is the sign that is ruled by Mars, the god of war.  Mars rules over guns and all other forms of weaponry and other supplies needed for warfare.  So we can just imagine that when Uranus enters Aries in May, the battle over gun control will begin to seem very important.

We are already seeing evidence of the chafing of gun rights advocates under the current rules, even though open carry of handguns is only banned in three states.  Ironically, one of those is Texas – arguably the seat of the modern Wild West.  In any case, President Obama’s election in November of 2008, which coincided with the first phase of the opposition between Saturn (rules) and Uranus (no rules) resulted in a widespread shortage of ammunition amidst fears of a crackdown on gun rights which of course never materialized.

Uranus is in the last degrees of Pisces, on the cusp of Aries and recent pro-gun rallies presage what we can expect once Uranus fully enters Aries next month.  The fervor over gun rights is becoming so strong that many feel that the National Rifle Association doesn’t go far enough in protecting the rights of gun owners to carry weapons wherever and whenever they choose.

Some gun owners, saying that the National Rifle Association isn’t battling hard enough for their rights, are taking the fight into their own hands.
The 4.3 million-member NRA, one of the most powerful and well-funded lobbying groups in Washington, has for 35 years dominated the push to expand gun rights.
But its strategies aren’t aggressive or imaginative enough for some gun owners who want to openly carry holstered pistols in public places, or to exploit loopholes in state gun laws to purchase semi-automatic rifles.
They are coming together in smaller, loosely organized groups that recruit on the Internet and find inspiration from the tea party movement.
On Monday, several thousand gun owners plan to mount two protests—a march in Washington and an “open-carry” rally in Mount Vernon, Va.
“More and more the gun-rights movement is moving toward a stand-up-and-shout approach,” said Jeff Knox, director of the Firearms Coalition, a for-profit, loose-knit coalition of activists. “There’s a lot of general frustration with NRA not taking a hard enough line.”

read more here…

Expect to see more of this, especially in early June as Jupiter joins Uranus in Aries, expanding and intensifying that revolutionary fervor.  And once Uranus and Pluto begin to face off more directly in 2011 the battles over control will begin in earnest.

Understanding the nature of the cycles can help to keep us from becoming fearful as we see the pattern unfold.  One interesting piece to all of this is the fact that political groups of all kinds are splintering, which is what we would expect when the planet of revolution enters the sign of personal will.  Whether it’s Islamic extremists or Teapartiers, it’s all about the individual testing the limits of freedom and liberty.

Landmark health care legislation passes

health care reformThe US House of Representatives passed Obama’s health care bill last night, paving the way to the bill being signed into law.

Under the opposition of Saturn to Uranus which began in the fall of 2008 and will conclude this summer, it has been virtually impossible to obtain any kind of compromise between two opposing views. In the American political landscape this has occurred not only between liberals (Uranus) and conservatives (Saturn), but also between the left and right ends of each political party. The idea of compromise has become a badge of weakness rather than a time honored tool for moving through the gridlock of politics.

President Obama ran for office on a platform of bringing opposing views together so that change could occur, but the people that voted for him seem to forget that in order to achieve that kind of unification not everyone will get exactly what they want. Liberals have disowned him over the public option, which likely would have spelled the end of insurance companies as we know it. Conservatives have disowned him over the idea that the health reform plan will cost a lot of money to implement, forgetting that our current health care system will swallow us up in any case in the next decade.

The fact is, under Pluto in Capricorn there is no way to achieve financial stability without tightening our belts a bit and facing the hard realities of our situation.

Obama has some interesting planetary transits right now. Saturn has been transiting his progressed Sun which is completing a 30-year pass through Virgo and will soon (September) enter Libra, the sign of compromise and diplomacy. Perhaps his achievement of this health care bill will open the doors for him to achieve other goals that will unite the country under one leader, something we haven’t seen for many years. That’s not likely to occur as long as Saturn and Uranus are in opposition (the last phase of that cycle occurs next summer), and the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune is sitting right on the Moon in the US chart which suggests further heartbreak and confusion on the part of the people for the next year or two.

For myself, the biggest disappointment in the healthcare bill is that it doesn’t adequately address the actual issue of healthcare and why Americans need so much of it, and is focused more on how to pay for it. As long as hospitals and medical centers are driven by a profit motive Americans will continue to pay for unnecessary tests and procedures that do little to save lives and do much to line the pockets of the medical establishment. And until we address the real causes of our poor health, which are primarily lifestyle related, costs will continue to spiral out of control.

One of the things I like to do with relationship charts is look at the progressed chart of one person and compare to the progressed chart of the other to see what’s happening in the relationship right now. Progressed Uranus in Obama’s chart is in an exact square right now to the US progressed Moon, showing a real shakeup in the attitudes and perceptions of the US people. His progressed Saturn is nearing an exact trine to the US progressed Chiron, reflecting the fact that he is forcing through (Saturn) the health care issue (Chiron). Hopefully the fact that this is a harmonious trine aspect means that the ultimate effect of this plan will be a positive one. And finally, his progressed Pluto is trine to the US progressed Sun, which reflects a transformational effect (Pluto) of the very nature of the US government (Sun).

Saturn/Uranus: Revolution in Iran

Just after the opposition between Saturn and Uranus culminated last week, tens of thousands of protesters filled the streets of Tehran on Friday in a rare show of opposition against the pro-Palestinian rhetoric of Iranian president Ahmadinejad whose anti-Israeli speeches on Jerusalem Day gave rise to chants like this one:  ”Not Gaza, Not Lebanon, I’ll sacrifice my life for Iran.”

Tension has been fomenting in Iran since the Iranian elections in June when Ahmadinejad won in a widely disputed landslide over challenger Hussein Moussavi, and we can see the events on the ground reflected in the astrological signatures.  The progressed Sun (national identity) in the chart of Iran last year conjoined Chiron (sensitivity and wounding/healing) at the very top of the chart, the point that we call the Midheaven, the point that represents the national government and its place in the world community.  Iranian dissidents are more and more sensitive now to their place in the global environment, and more and more open in their disdain for the oddly apocalyptic ideas of their President.

We are in the third phase of the opposition between Saturn and Uranus, and this conflict between the desire to return to the safety of the past (Saturn) and the desire for that which is new and revolutionary (Uranus) is clearly seen in the leadership of Ahmadinejad.  He is both a  revolutionary (Uranus) and a reactionary (Saturn), wanting to return to repressive conservative values (Saturn) while blowing Israel off the map (Uranus).  This phase of the opposition of Saturn to Uranus is aspecting exactly Mars in the chart of Iran.  Mars is the warrior – the aggressive instinct that seeks self-preservation and the gratification of desire.  There is a tremendous amount of anger in that country at the moment that will need to find some kind of release.

Powerful Virgo New Moon on Friday

art by Oxana Zuboff

The New Moon on Friday September 18, 2009 captures all of the powerful September planetary events and provides us with an opportunity to pull them all together for the new lunar cycle.  New Moons, remember, represent the beginning of a brand new lunar experience as the Moon conjoins the Sun and their dance begins anew.

The New Moon is actually the dark of the Moon – the Sun completely obscures the Moon’s light, and we begin the new cycle in a void.  This is an opportunity to let go of the lessons learned from the previous lunar cycle and begin the anew in the sign of Virgo.

Virgo isn’t a very exciting sign – it won’t bring fame or fortune like Leo, and it won’t attract passion and power like Scorpio.  Virgo is all about the necessary things we have to do to maintain life in a body like eating right, getting enough exercise, making sure our teeth are brushed and our house is clean.  But Virgo also inspires the powers of perception and discrimination.  Under Virgo’s influence we are able to sort through the complex factors that tend to confuse as and achieve clarity and purpose.

This New Moon sits right on the Saturn end of the Saturn/Uranus opposition, suggesting that the tension here between the Uranian drive for change and the Saturnian drive for discipline and convention will be exacerbated, but the Virgo influence will attempt to impose some kind of order on this tension.  Virgo wants to be prepared for everything, and needs a road map before beginning any kind of new adventure.  During this New Moon we will be called on to create a plan and a strategy (Virgo/Saturn) to help integrate the change that is sure to occur (Uranus).

Because Saturn and Uranus are in opposition, there is a tendency to want to favor one side over the other.  Perhaps we are more comfortable with Saturn and don’t want change.  Or maybe we are adventurous and chafing at the restrictions that Saturn has imposed, and ready for Uranus to take over.  But oppositions require balance; both ends of the equation must be integrated.  Uranus opposes the New Moon, so change is inevitable.  The only thing missing now is the plan, and the New Moon in Virgo can provide this.

Because Chiron is, in my opinion, the transformational ruler of Virgo, the power of Chiron to teach and infuse us with wisdom is at work in this New Moon.  Chiron teaches us through our own emotions and feelings.  When we feel something uncomfortable lurking within us, rather than reach for the beer or the candy bar turn your attention within.  See what emotion needs to be faced and released.

But this healing power of Chiron goes beyond emotional healing; there is also the impetus to create perfection and balance in our lives so that we may experience the body truly as the temple of the soul.  Under Chiron’s influence, as we heal we become less distracted by life in a physical form and more aligned with the soul’s experience.

Chiron is still enmeshed in the triple conjunction with Jupiter and Neptune, and as we have been discussing here all summer the call of the soul has been paramount under this planetary combination.

Pluto is powerful in this lunar chart, having just changed direction last week and still stationary, having only advanced by one minute at the time of the New Moon.  Pluto sits on the Ascendant of the chart in the charts for Washington DC and New York, and the triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune trines the Libra Midheaven.  This suggests that issues of power (Pluto) will take center stage during this lunation, and most of us along the East Coast will feel it.  Pluto requires that we eliminate waste from our lives, and he’s not always nice about it.

There’s no doubt that this is a major time of transition, and this New Moon can help us to move forward.  If, however, we attempt to hold onto the past, which will be tempting as Saturn embraces the New Moon, transition will be that much more difficult.  This is a time of letting go, but having a plan (Virgo) within which the process can occur.

Saturn/Uranus and “jackass moments”

Kanye West has never been known for his humility or circumspect behavior.  I wrote a post on him a couple of years ago after he compared himself to Jesus, and since then he hasn’t really mellowed much.

But his behavior on Sunday night’s Video Music Awards program on MTV was really astonishing.   Snatching the microphone away from Taylor Swift, winner in the “Best Female Video” category, he ranted that Beyonce should have won.

President Obama called him a “jackass,” and who can argue with him.  Just days before, South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson interrupted Obama’s speech to call him a liar, and then there was Serena Williams‘ own jackass moment.  Still…the reactions to these events have appeared to be overamplified, leading a commenter calling him/herself the Cynical Astrologer to note: “hysterical overreacting–from CNN on 9/11 to Joe Wilson, Serena Williams, et al to astrologers everywhere–is the main manifestation of th[e Saturn/Uranus opposition] aspect.”

There is such a sense now of opposition with this aspect, as I discussed the other day, that these events have a reach that extend far beyond the immediacy of their obnoxiousness.  I was invited today to join a Facebook group: 1,000,000 people against Joe Wilson.  The problem is, the greater a reaction to an event, the greater the apparent significance that event takes on.  Instead, we all take sides and the controversy expands and grows, expanding conflict and making compromise more and more impossible.

I hope that this is merely a function of the Saturn/Uranus opposition, which peaks today for the third time.  We do have two more phases of this cycle, but with Pluto having turned direct I’d like to think we can now move forward with some more important issues.

The resignation of Van Jones: A casualty of the Saturn/Uranus opposition

With Saturn and Uranus preparing to oppose each other exactly next week, the middle of the night resignation of Van Jones as the “Green Jobs Czar” in the Obama administration may be a hint as to which of the planets is winning.  Saturn represents society and structure, and Uranus is rebellion and new ideas.  When the conservative media discovered that Van Jones had signed a petition asking then Attorney General Eliot Spitzer to investigate possible government complicity in the September 11 tragedy, the resulting firestorm among conservative pundits exacerbated the already heated debate over the policies of the Obama administration.

President Obama was elected on November 4, the exact day of the first phase of the opposition from Saturn to Uranus.  He was elected because the majority of the people in the United States wanted change.  He ran on a platform of affordable health care, bringing jobs to Americans, withdrawing troops from Iraq, and changing the partisan ways of Washington.

Every attempt that he has made to fulfill these promises has been met with fierce opposition; not because of bad policy, but because conservatives want him to fail.  The downfall of Van Jones was orchestrated not by a debate over his usefulness, but because Glenn Beck the ignorant clown on Fox News who is even more absurd than Rush Limbaugh, began to ratchet up the pressure after a group that Jones was formerly involved with urged a boycott of Beck’s show.

Many of the left are upset with Obama for continuing to try to build alliances with conservatives in order to accomplish his agenda, but they are missing the point.  In a Saturn/Uranus time such as this, any big change cannot occur without support from both sides and that requires a putting aside of one’s need to be right.  Obama, with his Aquarius ascendant, understands this.  Unfortunately, it is the inability of the Democrats to rally behind him that could prove to unravel his presidency, not his inability to stand up to the Right.

Everything is in opposition under Saturn and Uranus

Saturn and Uranus are now within two degrees oftheir exact opposition which culminates on September 15.  As you probably now, Saturn represents conservative thinking and conventional behavior, and Uranus represents that which is new and innovative.

Perhaps this wasn’t the best time to roll out healthcare reform in the United States, since oppositional defiance is occurring not only between the Democrats and Republicans, but in splinter groups within the parties as well.  The desire to be in opposition to SOMETHING is fostered by the opposition from Saturn to Uranus, and if this planetary combination is transiting something in our own chart that urge to rebel against oneself can be quite complicated.

The opposition of Saturn to Uranus has been tightly aspecting Mars in President Obama’s chart, with Saturn conjunct Mars and Uranus in opposition.  A transit of Saturn to Mars in our own chart is very like trying to drive with the brakes on.  However, Saturn has now moved off Obama’s Mars which should begin to make things a little easier for him.  When a planet in the sky is opposite a planet in our chart (a transit of opposition) we often meet the transiting planet in our outer world.

Jupiter is retrograding back over Obama’s Ascendant (the first hit was back in late March of this year) and transiting Saturn will form a harmonious sextile to Saturn in his natal chart, helping him to get things done and giving him the confidence to make it happen.  However, between October and December transiting Uranus will make the last opposition to Mars in Obama’s chart and it’s quite possible that we will see further amplification of the radical (Uranus) behavior surrounding everything he attempts to do (Mars).  This is already approaching the height of ridiculousness as conservatives complain about Obama’s plan to speak to students to inspire them to work hard and stay in school.

The divisiveness and politicization caused by the opposition from Saturn to Uranus (remember the first exact hit occurred on the US Election Day) has penetrated every aspect of American society.  I suppose that this really began back in 2000 with the election of George W Bush, but the “angry left” as Rush Limbaugh called it was nothing compared to the rage and potential for violence that we are seeing in the angry right.

Meanwhile members of the Democratic party  are engaging in bitter battles themselves over how much compromise is possible in the healthcare debate.  Democrats tend to be more Uranian in nature – they are progressive, embrace change and free thought.  Consequently, they are less likely to agree on anything.  Republicans on the other hand, being more conservative in nature and therefore more Saturnian, find it easier to follow a leader and adhere to the party line.

The shift from left to right and right to left has been evident in elections in other parts of the world as well.  Elections in Afghanistan and the attempt to bring in a new government (Uranus) with no ties to the old regime (Saturn) have resulted in widespread accusations of election fraud.  And in Japan, voters last week elected to overturn their current government (Saturn) in favor of a more liberal one (Uranus).

And finally, in Samoa the government has decreed that on September 7 its citizens will begin driving on the left inside of on the right as they have done before, resulting in a revolution among citizens who dislike this radical change (Uranus) and want things to remain the same (Saturn).

We are only in the third phase of this cycle – we will have two more over the next year.  There is no doubt that this is a time of evaluating what to take from the best as we move forward, and what to leave behind.
