Spring Equinox, March 20 2011

spring equinox 2011Art by Laura Elliott. The Vernal or Spring Equinox takes place at 7:41 pm tonight (EDT) and it looks like the intensity will continue to ramp up for the next few months.  The Equinoxes and Solstices occur when the Sun moves into the Cardinal signs: Aries for spring, Cancer for summer, Libra for fall, and Capricorn for winter.

Aries is the first sign in the zodiac and as such it is the sign of initiation and the point of beginning.  There is a burst of energy at the Aries point: an unbridled explosion of pure potential and action, and this is the energy that we are experiencing when we talk about “Spring Fever.”

The chart for the equinoxes and solstices are often used for weather forecasting, and judging by the chart for the Spring Equinox it looks like we are in for more intense weather.  That’s nothing new, the Winter Solstice chart last year included a Full Moon, and the Summer Solstice  and Fall Equinox charts were also complex.

This equinox chart shows the Sun, at zero degrees Aries, in a nearly exact conjunction to Uranus, the planet of shocking and sudden events.  Ceres is nearly exactly conjunct Neptune, combining the watery mysteries of Neptune with the delicate eco-balance of Ceres.  This suggests more flooding in some areas, although with both planets in dry Aquarius there may also be severe droughts in some areas.

Saturn and Jupiter are very close to their exact opposition, which culminates at the end of March and there is a tension between the contracting force of Saturn and the expansive drive of Jupiter. The Moon in Libra sides with Saturn, anxiously seeking form and structure in the midst of the chaos, but Aries Mercury opposes the Moon and the mind takes precedence over the heart.

It’s been clear to me that the planetary dynamics over the past couple of years were much more personal – this year’s alignments are dealing with bigger events over which we have little or no control.

The equinox points are balance points since neither day nor night has precedence over the other.  Many of us have accomplished huge transformational changes in our own lives to empower us and help us to become more aligned with the direction our soul is taking towards awakening and clarification.  Those gifts will remain with us if we remain conscious and aware, and focused on that which is real – the center of calm at the heart of the storm.

Oh yes, and happy Ostara and Purim, too.

Will the Supermoon wreak more havoc on the world?

SupermoonAstrology is back in the mainstream news, with articles like this that have been circulating the internet lately:

The powerful tsunami that today slammed into Japan’s eastern coast comes just two days after warnings that the movement of the moon could trigger unpredictable events on Earth.

Astrologers predicted that on March 19 – a week tomorrow – the so-called ‘supermoon’ will be closer to Earth than at any time since 1992, just 221,567 miles away, and that its gravitational pull will bring chaos to Earth.

Others on the Internet have predicted it will cause further catastrophes such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

I’ve written quite a few times on this blog about the “Supermoon” phenomenon, which can be traced back to astrologer Richard Nolle who coined the term.  A “Supermoon” is said to occur when the Full Moon is at perigee, meaning it is closer to the Earth than any other time.  Is the March 19 Supermoon that different from any other Full Moon at perigee?

Now that Richard is being bombarded with questions on this topic he’s put up a special page to clarify the mystery:

There are 4-6 SuperMoons a year. The one on March 19, 2011 is in fact the closest SuperMoon of the year, but it’s not by any means the first one in 18 years, nor even the first extreme SuperMoon in 18 years. The truth is, March 19 will be the second SuperMoon this year, and we only have to go back to January 30, 2010 to find the last example of an extreme SuperMoon; as revealed in my tables published in the last century. There was a SuperMoon in effect February 12-21 this year in fact, which anyone who actually read my 2011 World Forecast Highlights would know. And I’m sure you’re aware of the Christchurch earthquake that practically destroyed that city on the last day of that interval. …

SuperMoons are noteworthy for their close association with extreme tidal forces working in what astrologers of old used to call the sublunary world: the atmosphere, crust and oceans of our home planet – including ourselves, of course. From extreme coastal tides to severe storms to powerful earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, the entire natural world surges and spasms under the sway of the SuperMoon alignment – within three days either way of the exact syzygy, as a general rule.

There are other astrological factors at work during this March 19th period, however.  The Full Moon on March 19th occurs just one day before the Spring Equinox which will feature the Sun in Aries in an exact conjunction with Uranus.  Because the charts for the Equinoxes and Solstices can be used in predicting weather and events for the upcoming season, that is a powerful alignment in Aries, a fire sign, signifying more weather changes and potentially more explosions and wildfires.

I’ll be writing more about the Equinox chart over the next week or so.

Vernal Equinox today – the first day of Spring!

Spring EquinoxArt by Kathryn Rodenbach.

The Sun enters Aries today, marking the Vernal Equinox – the time at which the days and nights are of equal length.  The charts for the Equinoxes and Solstices are significant in predicting the energy that will be circulating over the next few months, and these charts are often used by weather forecasters as well as other prognosticators of various kinds.

The chart for the current Equinox shows an exact opposition of Saturn to the Sun, which suggests challenges and delays along with the necessity for practicality and diligence.  However, Mars in Leo is exactly trine to the Sun, a harmonious balance of active energy that helps to keep us motivated and inspired.

The Moon in this chart is in an exact square to Chiron and Neptune which suggests a certain amount of emotional intensity despite the fact that the Moon is in Taurus which tends to remain rather balanced through any kind of chaos.  But Chiron and Neptune bring about a push for emotional healing and this sometimes necessitates an eruption of feelings that have long been hidden.

The Moon is in an exact harmonious sextile to Uranus which helps to provide a level of rationality and air which will keep the emotional stuff from becoming too intense.  Overall this is not a bad chart and suggests that the period leading up to the Summer Solstice will be a time of reflection and preparation for the intensity to come at the Solstice point.

The Messier Marathon: How many galaxies can you see?

Messier MarathonWhen the New Moon occurs near the spring equinox and the sky is dark, there is an opportunity to view up to 110 deep sky objects as catalogued by Charles Messier. These include galaxies and nebulae and star clusters that are normally not visible with amateur astronomical equipment.

For you astronomy buffs out there, Universe Today has provided a tour guide to view all 110 objects at a leisurely pace over an eleven-day period, ten at a time.  They started yesterday though, so you may have to do a bit of catching up!
