The astrology of the Newtown shooter

On December 14th  a 20 year old man went on a killing spree, murdering his mother and perhaps as many as 28 others, including 20 children at the elementary school where his mother taught.  Adam Lanza, the shooter, was described as intelligent but socially awkward, a kid who didn’t fit in.

John Townley has posted the charts of Adam Lanza along with a brief analysis of the event.  One thing I noticed right away about Lanza’s chart was the exact conjunction of Uranus and Neptune.  The Uranus/Neptune conjunction in the early 1990s was a hugely significant planetary event that opened up portals of consciousness and inspired radical (Uranus) spirituality (Neptune) that often veered into delusion (also Neptune).  The New Age movement, for example, exploded during this period.  Uranus and Neptune were both in Capricorn, the sign of structures and solid foundations – under the Uranus/Neptune conjunction we saw the radical transformation (Uranus) and dissolving (Neptune) of personal structures that underpin our lives such as marriages, relationships, businesses.

In terrible crimes such as these I often attempt to find answers in the birthchart of the person perpetrating the crime, NOT to offer excuses but in an attempt to see what kind of emotional challenge was left unresolved to result in such a heinous event.

The children that were born during this period (1991-1994) often are exceptionally gifted and talented (such as Justin Bieber who was born in 1994).   It is during this period that the whole concept of “Indigo Children”  entered the mainstream.  But this period also began the astonishing rise of autism spectrum disorders which I have often attributed to Uranian influences.  But autism does not create murderers, and to classify this young man as being simply on the autism spectrum ignores the greater truths as shown in the birthchart.

Lanza’s chart shows an Aries Venus in an exact square to both Uranus and Neptune.  Venus represents our ability to attach to others and how we feel about our own potential to be loved and desired.  Certainly there are plenty of people with this placement in their charts who are NOT social misfits, but it’s not uncommon to find Venus/Uranus people who are unable to form attachments, and Venus/Neptune people who feel lost in social situations.

The natal chart shows the Taurus Sun squared by Chiron, an often painful condition in which one’s sense of self (Sun) is threatened by emotional sensitivity and a quality of woundedness that often isn’t resolved until one’s later years.  Difficult aspects to the Sun often suggest abandonment by the father, and I suspect that when Lanza’s father left the family it was extremely painful for him.

Transiting Pluto has been within a degree of his natal Capricorn Moon for the past several months, with Uranus challenging his Moon by square aspect.  This Uranus/Pluto combination on a sensitive point like the Moon must have created a powerful pressure for resolution that had no apparent outlet for him.  If he was unable to connect with others, or to find some way to find comfort, this would have been an extremely painful five months of planetary hell.  And with Mars in Pisces, where anger and rage is often sublimated and submerged, he would have likely felt powerless and out of options.

At the time of these murders the New Moon in Sagittarius was sitting right on the Vertex in the chart.  The Vertex is a point that represents events over which we have no control; turning points in our life.  Lanza must have felt that in this act he was having a powerful meeting with his destiny and his fate.

Obviously, there are thousands of people with this same birthchart who are not committing mass murders.  Every one of us has a choice, and many of us have experiences of misery in this life that require us to adapt and grow and learn and heal.  I say this from personal experience, as many of you know.  I tend to see these situations as emblematic of the breakdown of the fabric of our society, in which loneliness and desperation create isolated and lonely individuals who feel so disconnected from the rest of the world that murder is a release without remorse, empathy and compassion.

This unspeakable event occurred just as Uranus stationed direct.  It was an event of shock and awe to such an extreme, but this is how Uranus works.  It shocks us out of our complacency and forces us to open our eyes.  Our culture is crumbling and our world is in desperate need of new values and a greater sense of community and mutual support.

It’s easy to blame events like this on the availability of guns, but gun control is only a small piece of the problem.  The desperation of our young people is the canary in the coal mine.  When will we begin paying attention?

Hearing Voices: “auditory hallucinations” or multidimensional communication?

Researchers in Ireland
have discovered that more than 20% of children ages 11-13 reported hearing voices.  The study showed that these “auditory hallucinations” stop as they get older and only 7% of older adolescents (aged 13-16) continue to hear voices. It does not appear that the study looked at younger children, who often retain the ability to remember past lives and “see” through the dimensional wall to their “imaginary” friends.

The study also reports that nearly 80% of the teenagers who did continue to hear voices also had a psychiatric disorder, although I couldn’t find details about this in any of the news reports.

The planet Uranus is associated with radical experiences of all kinds, but it also has a connection to multidimensional experiences.  Uranus rules electricity and electromagnetic energy, and our human energy grid is electromagnetic in nature.  I personally believe that human consciousness began to change in the late 1700s when Uranus was discovered, and that every major cycle involving the planet Uranus opens more energetic doorways of human awareness.  This was especially true during the conjunction of Uranus and Neptune in the early 1990s, and there is no doubt that children born since this time have been more sensitive and unique than any other generation before them.

I wrote about the “hearing voices” phenomenon back in 2010, quoting a New York Times article reporting that since the early 1990s (when Uranus conjoined Neptune) a growing number of researchers have been examining the phenomenon of voices in our heads.  That conjunction of Uranus and Neptune linked the electromagnetic expansion of Uranus with the transcendent experiences of Neptune, resulting in lots of self-delusion but also the growth of personal spirituality (as opposed to religion and dogma).  The Uranus/Neptune idea that we can communicate with spirit guides and guardian angels accelerated during this period, and this whole concept is grounded in the fact that we do in fact hear those voices in our heads.

Astrologers are not like psychic readers in that we read the birthchart rather than pull information from the ethers, but about 10 years into my astrological career I began to hear voices in my head when I was doing a reading.  I tried to ignore those voices, but when I began telling the clients what I was hearing I started getting powerful feedback.  Often I didn’t even understand what I was given, but the client always did.  I’m embarrassed to say that nearly 20 years later I still don’t trust those voices 100% despite the fact that they are always accurate.

Listening to voices across dimensions isn’t always a benign experience.  Many mass murderers have also heard voices whose messages were not so positive.  But I personally feel that branding these experiences as psychotic breakdowns without further investigation does a profound disservice to the affected children for whom it is possible that real magic and awakening is occurring.

According to Wikipedia, The Hearing Voices Movement began in 1987 with the work of Marius Romme and Sandra Escher.  1987 was the year of the Harmonic Convergence during which eight planets were aligned in a Grand Trine and Grand Sextile.

Because we live in a physical world, the inability to separate any kind of transcendent experience from a material experience is, if not a disorder, problematic.  We have to be able to attend to our jobs without being taken down a path by the faeries, and we can’t become so ungrounded that we can no longer attend to our daily needs.  This is the basic premise of the Virgo/Pisces polarity: the balance between the details of our material world (Virgo) and the transcendence of spiritual experience (Pisces).

Still, any discussion of mental illness necessitates the examination of the possibility that there is an element of consciousness present, instead of looking solely as an aberration as being some kind of disorder.

The astrology of Justin Bieber’s sudden rise

Justin Bieber zodiacJustin Bieber will appear on Saturday Night Live this weekend, assuring his place in mainstream America forever.  Justin Bieber is only sixteen, but he has seemingly taken the world by storm with his popular R&B-style performances.  Evidently both Usher and Justin Timberlake wanted to sign Bieber.  His first album was released in November of 2009 and went platinum almost immediately.

For me the interesting thing astrologically about Justin Bieber is that he is one of the Uranus/Neptune kids – the kids that were born when Uranus and Neptune were conjunct in the sky between 1992 and 1995.  That particular combination of planets has a quality of genius but also of psychological difficulties as the radical innovation of Uranus combines with the fantasy and illusion of Neptune.  There is an enormous amount of creative potential with this entire generation, but many of them are extremely sensitive emotionally as well.  It is under this influence that the concept of “Indigo Children” arose, and many of the kids of this age group exhibit these Indigo tendencies such as heightened psychic awareness and sensitivity.

Justin Bieber’s creativity is obvious in his chart with his Piscean Sun and Venus.  Pisces is the sign that seeks to transcend material reality and move into a realm of imagination and wonder.  However, Saturn conjoins Justin’s Sun which gives him both a sense of insecurity as well as the desire and need to work hard and to build something, even at a young age.

It’s rare that someone with a sensitive Pisces Sun conjoined by repressive and insecure Saturn achieves this kind of fame so early, but Justin has Pluto, the planet of personal empowerment and transformation, in a very tight conjunction to his North Node which signifies his future.   In addition, Jupiter in his chart is in the passionate sign of Scorpio which adds a touch of sex appeal and the innate understanding of how to use it.

Justin’s fame erupted last year under a series of transits to his progressed Sun.  A harmonious transit of Saturn (hard work and achievement) combined with a conjunction of Uranus (sudden change and surprise) stimulated a radical shift in his path that changed his life forever, and then Jupiter (luck and good fortune) came along to open that door of success a little more widely.
Bieber’s fame appears to have come purely from his creative talent rather than a glitzy pop image like some of the other young stars (Lady Gaga, Ke$ha).  Still, the sad tale of Corey Haim is just one story where a young star had too much too soon and squandered his life.  That Saturn on Justin’s Sun can give him the inner reserves and strength to combine work hard with early luck, but it can also kick his butt if he tries to slide on his early good fortune.
