Venus Transit wrapup

by Lynn Hayes  With Venus retrograde and having just transited the Sun, its energy is still powerful and I wanted to share some other articles and viewpoints that may be of interest.

  • In my own article on the 2012 Transit of Venus I wrote about the ancient archetype of Venus as the more powerful Innana and Ishtar.  Beth Owls Daughter has a wonderful article offering even more details about the deeper layers of the Venus archetype.  Innana was also associated with the planet Venus as Morning Star and Evening Star, but exhibited more of a transformative power than her later Greek and Roman counterpart Venus Aphrodite.
  • Rachel Maddow connected the Transit of Venus with the recall election in Wisconsin that was supposed to unseat Governor Walker. The recall election failed, which just goes to show that you can’t always use an astrological event for political prediction. There are just too many factors involved. (More on that later.)
  • Fox News quoted astrologers Susan Miller and Shelley Ackerman.  Susan Miller said, ““The Mayans watched Venus obsessively, and had to have known that the end of their calendar would occur at the perfect time, in the same year as the transit of Venus,” Miller said, noting the Mayans were “terrified” of Venus.  While it’s true that the Mayans were keen observers of Venus, to say they were terrified of Venus is rather ridiculous, in my opinion.  Shelley’s predictions were more along the lines of technological breakthroughs because of the Gemini connection.
  • Michael Erlewine writes for astrology.com that under the Venus transit women will learn to better express the divine feminine and stop trying to behave like men.  I will attempt to refrain from making personal judgments here!

My favorite article is from our friend Eric Francis of Planet Waves who admits that any astrological significance of the Venus Transit lies in its singularity – the fact that it is such a rare event.  He interviews astrology Adam Gainsbourg who is somewhat of a specialist in Venus energy, who says:

What becomes illuminated is how your feminine aspect self-radiates into the world — what you uniquely have to give to the improvement of our planet.” He adds, “The solar feminine is, literally, our ‘light body’. She’s the one inside each of us who leaves nothing uncovered, nothing unfelt. We experience the full range of our actual feelings as her body.” Yet the Sun is expressive, so this is about being moved to take creative action.

“The Solar feminine is a confrontational idea for many religions because her very existence fundamentally challenges the fragmentary, long-held assumption of masculine spiritual superiority. By re-acknowledging her, we begin to re-empower her. The solar feminine shines not just through the success and expression of women, but through the power of a man’s emotions received in his heart.”

The symbology of the Transit of Venus is the intervention of Venus between our earthly existence and the Sun.  Venus is the intermediary that takes our requests for love and happiness to the solar deity and translates them back to us.  Astrological Venus represents our values and the way we view the world as well as our ability to love and connect with others, and the Transit of Venus can only happen when Venus is traveling retrograde. The sense here for me is that we are being called to re-evaluate our values and the things in our lives that are most important.

The 2012 Transit of Venus: Cataclysm or consciousness shift?

Photo from Psychedelic AdventureOn June 5th Venus will transit the Sun in a rare occurrence that will happen only twice during our lifetime.  This astronomical event is a bit like an eclipse in that Venus will obscure a portion of the Sun during this transit event.

Venus transits come in pairs, and the first of the current pair occurred in 2004.  It’s an interesting coincidence that this major astronomical event corresponds to 2012, but it is not likely to bring about the end of the world.  Much has been made of the fact that the June 2004 transit of Venus preceded the tsunami in the Phillipines by about six months, but other deadly tsunamis have occurred when there was no transit of Venus.  I am having trouble finding any significant events that are tied to the Venus transit that occurred in 2004.

Transits of Venus always occur on the Gemini/Sagittarius axis which is the axis of knowledge.  Gemini learns through experience and assimilation, where Sagittarius is more about finding the One Truth and then disseminating knowledge to others, so some astrologers have predicted a great Consciousness Shift during the Transit of Venus.  There is no doubt that consciousness is shifting and has been for the past 60 years or so, but I think it’s unlikely that the upcoming Transit of Venus will bring with it a a major event of the type that some are predicting.

The Mayans were very attuned to the cycles of Venus and used these cycles for the timing of wars. This fact has been used by some to predict a major war beginning with this Transit of Venus, except that the Mayans used the heliacal rising of Venus rather than the transits for predicting wars and attacks.

There is some indication of heightened hostilities between Israel and Iran in June and July, but that is tied more to the upcoming square of Uranus in Aries (warfare and rebellion) to Pluto in Capricorn (established power structures).

Venus has come down to us as rather a cartoonized version of the Goddess of Love.  The original love goddesses, Ishtar from Assyria and Babylonia and Innana from Sumeria, and later Astarte and Ashtoreth who was mentioned in the Bible as the wife of Jehovah – unlike their later versions (Aphrodite and Venus) these goddesses held the keys to sexuality, power and magic.

Venus was retrograde during the 2004 Transit, and is retrograde now in Gemini.  Communication and learning, conversation and shifting the way we think about our interactions with others are highlighted now.  The way we bond and connect with others can empower us or denigrate us, and during this retrograde phase we have the opportunity to find greater balance.  Rather than look for cataclysmic events in our outer world to transform our inner world, I believe it is better to look within for the keys to transformation and them use those keys to help to create change in all aspects of human life and consciousness.  In that way the outer world will surely be transformed as well.

Solar eclipse at the Gemini New Moon, May 20 2012

eclipse May 20 2012by Lynn Hayes  Please note that the URL of this blog has changed and update your bookmarks.

This Solar Eclipse at the Gemini New Moon marks a brand new beginning and a fresh start.   New Moons mark the beginning of the lunar cycle, and a New Moon at the first degree of a sign carries its own signature of a new beginning. Gemini is the sign of awakening the mind: the mental curiosity that takes us into new experiences and new ways of looking at the world.

This New Moon is an eclipse because it occurs near the Nodes of the Moon – in this case it aligns in a tight conjunction with the South Node which represents our past history and karmic ties. The Lunar Nodes give eclipses greater significance since we are confronting and clearing energies that continue to lurk from the past. While we are fostering this new beginning and creating new ideas for the future, something or someone from the past will require our attention. We can’t move forward without integrating these lessons.

Mercury, Gemini’s ruler, is conjunct Jupiter at the New Moon which enhances the mind and facilitates understanding. However, Neptune squares the lunation and the South Node which brings an element of mystery and confusion into the mix. The Gemini New Moon wants to be free like a bird to fly above the earth and collect new viewpoints, but Neptune challenges us to surrender our ideas of the way the world works and instead learn to trust our intuitive inner voice. This can create some confusion if we are unused to living a life simultaneously in our inner and outer worlds but it is exactly this experience that leads us to a deeper wisdom.

We have more Geminian energy with the retrograde turn of Venus a few days ago, and the upcoming Transit of Venus across the Sun. Venus retrograde asks us to look back and reassess what it is that we value and how those aspects of our life support us and the world around us.  Gemini seeks understanding without judgment – it is a learning without discrimination or attachment.  Each idea and suggestion has its own value and adds to the richly colored tapestry of life.

The challenging square from Uranus (radical revolution) to Pluto (death and regeneration) continues to oversee every smaller planetary cycle.  This is not a time to hold onto the past or fear the future, because the past is crumbling away under our feet.  The Gemini New Moon grants us an opportunity to gain understanding through the mental realm that can help to support us as we move into this brave new world.

Venus retrogrades May 16th

Venus turns retrograde 2012Please note that the URL of this blog has changed and update your bookmarks.

In a summer with lots of astrological news (most notably the upcoming square of Uranus and Pluto), we normally wouldn’t pay much attention to the planet Venus which as one of the more benign planets generally has rather a soft astrological effect. In addition, because it moves so quickly even these soft effects last no longer than a day or so.

However, every 18 months or so Venus turns retrograde and forces us to sit up and take notice to our connections with others, our style of relating, and the ways in which our relationships enrich or destroy our lives. When a planet turns retrograde it appears to move backwards from our perspective, but astrologically it retraces earlier steps and turns our attention back to the past. When Venus is retrograde we may find ourselves thinking of past loves, or hearing from an old friend. We may decide that our relationship patterns are no longer working for us and make changes.

Venus also deals with matters of beauty and aesthetics so we may decide to change our look under this influence. Our values and ability to attract prosperity also falls under the domain of Venus, so Venus retrograde periods (like other retrogrades) often indicate a shift in the financial markets.

Venus is in Gemini right now, and with Gemini highlighting communication and learning this is likely to be a retrograde period full of conversation and the desire to share our experiences and understanding with others. This is a great time for writers and anyone in the field of communication – our plans may not unfold according to our timeline because of the retrograde, but there will be opportunities to revisit areas of communication that perhaps need enhancement or perfecting.

A transit of Venus is a very rare occurrence – we will see only one pair in our lifetime. The first of the pair this time around occurred in June 2004 and the second occurs in June this year (the 6th in the Western hemisphere and the 5th in the Eastern hemisphere where it will be most visible).

Musings on the Chilean miners

Chile mine rescue astrologyYesterday the world watched enraptured as 33 miners in Chile were released from their bondage in the Underworld and emerged relatively unscathed, with amazing stories of bravery and transformation.  One of the more amazing reports that I heard was that the miners were arguing over who should be rescued first, each one wanting their brethren to be released before they themselves were freed.  This has been a truly inspiring story, but the true miracle was the spirit that these men demonstrated during their captivity, despite the agonizing pressures of being trapped in the underworld darkness.

The astrological significance of the rescue of the miners this week is impressively precise.  First, we have Pluto (transformation in the Underworld) in the sign of Capricorn, ruling the Earth and all things that come from underground, conjoining Ceres, the goddess of the earth who provides nourishment and sustenance of all living things.  The Pluto/Ceres conjunction corresponded in its negative form with the oil spill in the Gulf earlier this year, and with the release of red sludge in Hungary, but here we have the reminder that transformation in the underworld can occur despite adversity.

We also have Venus in retrograde motion right now, and in her retrograde phase Venus disappears from the evening sky.  During this period of darkness she is thought to be in the Underworld, and the ancient Sumerians created the myth of Inanna’s descent into the Underworld to correspond with the disappearance of Venus from the sky.  Inanna was the predecessor of the goddess that we know call Venus, and in her journey to the Underworld she was required to release all of her clothing and arrive in the heart of darkness completely naked and free of artifice.  The Venus retrograde cycle suggests a mating between Venus and the Earth as she goes underground, and then a mating of Venus with the Sun when she emerges and conjoins the Sun (which will occur on October 28th this year).

Venus is not only in the Underworld of the sky, but also traveling through Pluto-ruled Scorpio where all of the secret and hidden emotions are buried.  During this time we’re being asked to surrender the items of artifice that keep us separated from our true selves.  As we watch the rescue of the  miners in Chile, we wonder what it would feel like to be trapped beneath the Earth, and retrograde Venus reminds us that the Underground is an important aspect of our transition and transformation.

It’s an interesting synchronicity that the pod used to rescue the miners was called “Fenix,” or Phoenix.  The Phoenix is the bird that symbolizes the sign of Scorpio – the bird that dies in fire and is reborn in its own ashes.

New Moon in Libra, October 7 2010

New Moon in Libra A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon align in the sky, beginning the next phase of the lunar cycle. There’s a clearing of the slate, and an opportunity to begin anew.  The Libra New Moon on October 7 th includes not only a conjunction of the Sun and Moon but also a conjunction of Mercury to Saturn, all in Libra.

Libra is ruled by Venus, and Venus is quite powerful right now since it’s virtually stationary as it prepares to change direction to turn retrograde.  With four planets in Libra, and Venus stationary, we are seeing the more powerful aspect of the Goddess of Love.  I have always found it interesting that the truly ancient cultures (Babylonia, Sumeria, ancient India) have much more powerful representations of the goddess of love and sexuality than the Venus of Roman patriarchal culture.  Ishtar, Astarte, Ashtoreth, Innana – these were powerful ladies that instilled awe and even fear into the populace.  Venus has become a bit of a cartoon character in some circles – the Playboy Bunny of the zodiac.  But the instinct for love and attachment is one of the most primal archetypes in human experience, and it is this archetype that is at play in tomorrow’s New Moon.

Here we also have the approaching conjunction of Mercury to Saturn, stabilizing (Saturn) our thoughts and ideas (Mercury) and teaching (Saturn) ways to achieve greater cooperation (Libra) as we learn to bridge the gaps that keep us from truly understanding (Mercury) each other.

Venus presides over our values and attachments, and we may find ourselves questioning the things to which we have become attached over time during this retrograde period.

The New Moon chart also includes a conjunction of Jupiter to Uranus which is still hanging in there from last summer. This planetary combination opens a doorway to new ideas and ways of relating to others and to ourselves as well. This is the “breakthrough” conjunction, where stagnant habits can be shattered and new patterns begin to form.

This New Moon, and the stationary Venus phase and the retrograde period that follows, are ideal times to either begin new relationships or re-examine the attachments that we currently find ourselves in – both to people and to ideas or possessions of various types.  How do we feel about money?  What is the value of certain possessions that we carry with us – do they hold us back, or do they enhance our lives?  Are there areas in our relationships that require greater understanding or clarity?   These are the questions to ask right now as the New Moon carries the answers.

Venus prepares to retrograde, 2010

Venus will turn retrograde on October 9th and is at a virtual standstill now as it prepares to change direction.

Don’t believe all of the negative hype you read about Venus turning retrograde; as planets go Venus is generally a beneficial one.  But when retrograde, Venus forces us to look into our past and see where changes need to be made in current relationships and sometimes urges us to look into past situations that we thought were long gone.

From an article I wrote after the last retrograde period:

The Venus retrograde period (March 5 to April 17 2009) was greeted with great trepidation by some astrologers and the readers who follow them. Venus is generally known as a beneficial planet, but when retrograde she can challenge our relationships and force us to look below the surface at what motivates us in our interactions with others.
There was a large number of mass murders (eight?) during the Venus Rx period, and most of those were connected to disappointment and resentment of family members and spouses. Fortunately, it’s a very small number of people who experienced the self-examination of the Venus Rx period in this manner, but many people wrote to me of their experiences dealing with friends and loved ones.
I was not exempt from this process, and much of my Venus Rx experience was facilitated by Facebook which I joined after much resistance (I already spend way too much time online!!). But through Facebook I found a couple of old friends who I had just lost touch with because we never found each other and as it happened, both of them made visits to where I live during the Venus Rx period so we were able to reconnect.

There were some challenging moments, such as the time I asked one friend why she had broken up with me 15 years ago (we had since made up, but never addressed the cause of the breakup). I wasn’t very happy with the answer (Chiron was also squaring my Venus at the time) and it caused me some distress as I vacillated between anger (how could she misread me so badly?) and shame (how could I have hurt her feelings so carelessly?).   But in the end a resolution occurred that has already improved our connection. …

We would like to think relationships are meant to be easy, but the relationships with people that are truly our soulmates are designed to aid us in our personal growth. Sometimes this is fabulous and thrilling, and sometimes it’s painful and exposes parts of our selves we would just as soon ignore. This, to me, is what the Venus retrograde period is all about.

Venus retrograde, financial markets, and the Mayans

Mayan calendarVenus is the goddess of love and pleasure, and she rules over the principle of attraction as well. In that guise she oversees our ability to accumulate wealth and talents as well as loved ones, and it’s therefore not surprising that since Venus turned retrograde the financial markets have improved and there is a bit of optimism lurking underneath the darkness.

Venus is at its brightest just before it turns retrograde, but it is during the time when it makes a station as it prepares to turn direct that it slips into darkness. During this retrograde period that time will come around the 15th of April.  According to Bruce Scofield as quoted by Erin Sullivan in her excellent book Retrograde Planets: Traversing the Inner Landscape, the ancient Mesoamerican cultures believed that Venus “takes the form of a man and walks the Earth.  Here he meets the goddess Xochiquetzal, goddess of love, who abets him in breaking his vows of purity.”  Venus couples with the goddess and is sacrificed when the planet Venus is hidden from view, only to be reborn as the Morning Star and back in her female guise.

This pageant reflects the fact that when Venus is retrograde we often are forced to view that which is hidden and dark within us and in our relationships.  The Mayans evidently used the astronomical movements of Venus to plan their wars and sacrifices at the time that Venus emerged from the underworld.  This celebration of Venus as Goddess of War would exalt Venus in Aries, the sign ruled by Mars, god of war, rather than refer to Venus in Aries as being in her detriment.  Is this a symbol of our sanitized culture which even from an astrological point of view prefers the cartoon character Venus Aphrodite, emerging as a sex goddess from the sea, to the raw and brutal Mayan vision of Venus, “still sticky with the blood and bones of the dead after her forty-day journey in the arms of the Sun.” (Sullivan, Retrograde Planets).

As a culture we are learning to reframe our values during this Venus retrograde period.  The stress of the financial crisis has caused many people to re-evaluate their lives now that they are out of work, and some are finding that there are some benefits.  What do we value, and who are we really underneath the veneer that we present to the world?  This is what is being asked of us now.

Lamar Odom is in Retrograde

I love this… Coach Phil Jackson of the LA Lakers has used the retrograde turn of Venus last week to explain Lamar Odom’s poor performance:

At a loss for a conventional explanation for the inconsistencies that have defined Lamar Odom’s career, Coach Phil Jackson turned to astrology Monday to account for his mercurial forward’s mini-slump.

“More than anything else, Lamar is affected by the astrological sequences, and I know that Venus went into retrograde the other day,” Jackson deadpanned. “All of a sudden he started shooting his free throws with a dip and a bend, and it was like, where did that come out of? We tried to get him back on the straight and narrow in practice.”

I never realized Phil Jackson was an astrology aficionado, but I love that so many people now are talking about real astrology without shame!

By the way, I snuck a peek at Lamar Odom’s chart (born November 6, 1979, time unknown), and his performance problems stem more from the lineup in Aquarius forming a square to the conjunction of the Sun to Uranus in his chart and causing some surprising impulses that are throwing him off balance, than from Venus turning retrograde.

Venus retrogrades today and casts her spells in reverse

Venus turns retrograde this morning, shortly after being squared by the Moon at 8:06 am.

Venus usually slips through our lives like a whisper, and we barely experience her transits.  Her influence is usually soft and encouraging and I often say that we only really take notice when we experience discomfort of some kind.  Even the challenging transits of Venus are benign, offering us only an opportunity to indulge in greater indulgence.

Perhaps the timing of this retrograde Venus at the height of Girl Scout Cookie season could spell disaster to some of us (me), but what else does this retrograde period have in store?  Planets are said to be traveling in retrograde motion when they appear to move backwards from our perspective on earth. During these times their influence causes us to look back instead of forward as we encounter the experiences of that planet.

Venus is famous for her influence on relationships.  As the goddess of love and beauty, she bestows an attractive power and grace, but that attractive power draws more than love.  It can also be a magnet for financial wealth and personal possessions so in that way, Venus is said to rule our values and the things that we love as well as the people. Venus also rules our ability to love and relate to our self, and the kind of talents and personal resources that we possess as well as the material possessions.

This Venus retrograde period occurs in the forceful sign of Aries.  In Aries, Venus has been more motivated to grab for the gusto – to impel us to go after what we want and who we want. Venus turning retrograde makes that more difficult.  We still have the desire, but the actualization of that desire is not so easy.  We may have to go back over old situations and reclaim a part of ourselves that was lost there since Aries is the sign of the independent Self. Venus retrograde periods are not a great time for the stock market or for financial gain, not that we need any help in that area right now!

Venus is in a harmonious sextile to expansive Jupiter as it turns to retrograde, facilitating the process for us so that we are better able to integrate the retrograde experience.  After that, however, Venus will make no further aspects to any other planets until March 28 when it will conjunct the Sun.  Traditional astrologers call this “combust” and don’t like it – in their view the Sun actually burns Venus and creates problems in relationships and finance and other Venus-ruled areas.  Most modern astrologers will disagree with that – the energy of the Sun, especially now with Venus in Aries, can help to energize us where we feel weakened by the retrograde of Venus.

After Venus crosses the path of the Sun it will link up with Mercury and then form a square to Pluto at the beginning of April.  This is like to be a negative time for financial matters, for anything having to do with art and creativity, and for relationships.  On the positive side though, Pluto will expose any fissures in these areas that need to be dealt with once and for all.  This process is uncomfortable, but rarely deadly and brings an outcome that is ultimately positive.

Venus will retrograde back into Pisces on April 12 which will likely inspire us to take a deep breath and relax back into the softness of the receptivity of Pisces, a water sign.  However, shortly thereafter as it changes direction to move forward again, Venus will be conjuncted by the aggression of Mars for several days, increasing the intensity and helping us to prepare for the re-entry of Venus into Mars-ruled Aries on April 24.

All retrograde periods are excellent for going back and reviewing areas of life that are ruled by that planet.  For Venus, it’s a wonderful time for artistic pursuits, for music and dance, for redoing your website or marketing materials, for changing your hairstyle and wardrobe.  In our relationships, it’s an excellent time to take a deep look at all of the relationships in our life and see where they can be improved – where the love can be deepened.

For women, the travel of Venus through Aries, retrograde or not, brings us back in touch with the original archetype of this Goddess whose qualities have been watered down over the millenia to the cartoon character she is today.  In ancient Sumeria she was Ishtar and Inanna, goddess of feminine power and sexuality.  It was only later that her power was usurped by the male gods and she became the goddess of love that we know today.  This is interesting timing, because it’s the 50th anniversary of Barbie,, the 20th century version of Venus, and I have promised to post an astrological profile of Barbie today!
