Neptune and the Opioid addiction epidemic

Neptune in Pisces

Neptune is one of the “transformational” planets – more recently discovered it does not fall under the traditional category of planets which include the luminaries (Sun and Moon) as well as the planets traditionally used by astrologers which include all the other solar system planets through Saturn.  I have found that the transformational planets do not operate on a personal level; instead, they inspire and motivate change.

At its higher level of operation, Neptune encourages us to transcend the boundaries of the material world in order to enjoy a spiritual experience of bliss and “not-self.”  However, there are different ways to achieve that experience and not all of them are positive.  Meditation, music, art – these all encourage the highest expression of Neptune.  But alcohol and drugs are also used to obtain that experience of “not-self” which verges on oblivion rather than bliss.

Neptune entered its own sign of Pisces in 2011 (you can read more about that here and here). In these early articles about Neptune in Pisces I wrote:

For the first eight years that Neptune moves through Pisces Chiron will be there as well.  In its role as the Wounded Healer (or as I prefer to call it, the Soul Healer) Chiron reveals any area in our world which requires release and healing so that a greater wisdom may emerge.  We are likely to see a more advanced wave of “designer” drugs – pharmaceuticals designed to evoke certain experiences.  The legalization of marijuana for medical use, and its adoption by pharmaceutical companies for profit, is likely to come rather quickly.

The spread of legalization of marijuana  is certainly occurring, and so is the spread of opioids to quash the psycho-emotional pain that Chiron added to the Neptunian mists. In fact, since Neptune entered Pisces the rates of opioid addiction have increased by over 500% A study by Blue Cross Blue Shield found “In 2010, there were just 1.4 incidences of opioid use disorder among every 1000 members. By 2016, that rate had climbed to 8.3 incidences for every 1000 members.”

There is a lot of talk about how to treat opioid addiction pharmaceutically, especially in light of the health care debate.  But from the astrological viewpoint replacing one drug to kill emotional pain with another, as was done with methadone treatment for heroin addiction, will not solve the problem.  The astrological problem, from my perspective, is that Neptune in Pisces is driving us all to seek greater meaning and a higher experience in our lives.  The materialistic focus on achievement and power and things will no longer work under Neptune in Pisces but many people are unable to find a way to transcend their pain.

This pain appears to be both physical and emotional, and the two are often connected.  Many individuals who become addicted to opioids begin taking them for pain related to injury.  Other types of pain, such as back pain and fibromyalgia, likely have an emotional component such as the work pioneered by Dr. John Sarno.  In some studies yoga and meditation have been found to be helpful  in relieving pain symptoms.

We can all navigate the transit of Neptune in Pisces (which will continue until 2026) more successfully if we focus on bringing more transcendent experiences into our lives.  Finding a spiritual connection through meditation, song, yoga, or religious bliss.  Allowing the creative side of your being to emerge. Spending time in the stillness of nature.  Ultimately all of these experiences will bring us closer to the bliss and heightened awareness of consciousness that is called for now.

The Astrology of Prince Harry’s Revelations

Prince Harry astrologyIn a series of recent interviews, Prince Harry has revealed some of his innermost thoughts and feelings, something very unusual for the normally strait-laced Windsors of Britain.

Harry’s chart is loaded with the element of Earth – Sun in Virgo, Capricorn rising and Moon in Taurus.  Practical, grounded and anchored in the material world, Earthy people tend to be very responsible and understand the necessities of position and place in the world.  Yet in his youth, Harry was known as the mischievous child, forever pulling pranks on those around him and in school was constantly in trouble, according to Diana’s letters (published posthumously).

Mars in Harry’s chart is in the freedom-loving sign of Sagittarius and widely conjunct Uranus, planet of the rebel. The conflict between this iconoclastic rabble-rouser and the earthy pragmatism is a challenging one and in a conflict like this we often project one side into outer life.  Because Harry was brought up in the tightly controlled environment of British royalty, this need to be responsible to the British people appears to be a strong professional motivator and in fact, the planet of responsibility, Saturn, sits right on the Midheaven (the point of career and public life).  But this Uranian/Sagittarian side inspires him to create change in the monarchy; to modernize it for the 21st century.

Harry’s chart shows a challenging opposition between Chiron (wounding and healing) and Uranus (electromagnetic energy field).  This aspect is quite common in those born between the mid 1950s and the mid 1980s, but no one else alive today has it.  Individuals with this chart dynamic are typically extremely sensitive energetically and born healers.  They have an ability to transmute energy and tend to operate in this way no matter what their chosen profession.  We can see this in some of Harry’s recent interviews: “It’s really important to speak out. If you keep concerns to yourself for weeks, months or years, they become a real problem. It is not weakness. It is strength to come forward, talk about it and move on.”  This is Chiron speaking.

Most recently Harry has been speaking out about mental illness, revealing the depression he experienced after the death of his mother in 1997.  During the few years after Diana’s death Harry went through a large number of difficult planetary cycles:  Chiron (soul wounding) opposite Saturn (challenge and depression),  Saturn opposite Pluto (death and transformation),  Pluto opposite Chiron (the excavation of the soul wounds),  Saturn opposite Saturn (crisis and restabilization), Chiron square Sun (emergence of a wound to the identity),  Uranus square Moon (lack of stability and need to break from established patterns), Chiron conjunct Mars (a challenge to one’s ability to take care of one’s own needs), Saturn conjunct Chiron (the forced exposure of one’s inner wounds for healing).  This is a lot of hard stuff to work through, especially for a young person aged 13-17.

These difficult planetary cycles can make life miserable, but ultimately the wisdom unearthed through this deep soul work is what enriches our lives and give them meaning.  I believe that this is what we are seeing in Prince Harry today as he emerges into public life as a sensitive and compassionate man with a mission to heal his country.

On a side note, I have been appalled by the number of astrologers projecting doom for Prince Harry’s relationship with Meghan Markle.  Astrologers are unable to predict the success or failure of a relationship based on compatibility – some of the most enduring relationships show high degrees of incompatibility.  Trading on a bet for someone’s future unhappiness seems to me a poor way to gain fame for one’s writings.

Sunday Inspiration: The power of within

I prayed for change, so I changed my mind.
I prayed for guidance and learned to trust myself.
I prayed for happiness and realized I am not my ego.
I prayed for peace and learned to accept others unconditionally.
I prayed for abundance and realized my doubt kept it out.
I prayed for wealth and realized it is my health.
I prayed for a miracle and realized I am the miracle.
I prayed for a soul mate and realized I am the One.
I prayed for love and realized it’s always knocking, but I have to allow it in.

Summer Solstice: A Crescendo of Light

The Summer Solstice – the longest day of the year.  For many in today’s (northern hemisphere) world that means beach holidays and cookouts, but on a more esoteric level it is the fulfillment of the light of consciousness.

The esoteric year begins at the time just after the Winter Solstice with the return of the light as the days begin to lengthen and the darkness diminishes.  The light of the Sun is associated with the principal energy source in the human experience, and the astrological Sun (your Sun Sign as it is called) represents that energy source, that illumination, within your own Self.  As the light returns we become more expansive – brighter and more awakened.

The turning of the year between the cardinal points (zero degrees of the cardinal signs) begin with the darkness of the Winter Solstice at zero degrees Capricorn, moving through the Vernal Equinox at zero degrees Aries, culminating at the Summer Solstice in Cancer, and waning at the Autumn Equinox in Libra.  Equinoxes are times of balance and equilibrium; solstices are times of ebb and flow.

The Summer Solstice is a time to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness in the individual.  The Sun is newly in Cancer – associated with the Moon, the soul (scarab in ancient Egypt) The Moon, ruler of Cancer, is associated with the harvest and the cultivation of the land. The Sun aids in this cultivation in our external lives, and the power of the Moon cultivates the emotional body and the Soul.  In esoteric studies the “central sun” acts as the point of integration between Spirit and Matter.  At the Solstice the Solar and Lunar powers unite to fuel a transformational shift.

To put these esoteric energies to work for you, spend some time in meditation, visualizing the beautiful gold light of the Central Sun in your own heart.  Allow the light of this Sun to expand throughout your entire being, filling you with positivity, harmony and grace. Allow your intentions for peace and blessings to shower your own self, and then to spread throughout your family, your community, and the entire world.

For more information about the Summer Solstice celebration, see my dear friend Beth Owl’s Daughter’s post.

For my southern hemisphere friends – this post is written for folks in the northern hemisphere.  In the southern hemisphere you are still at zero degrees Cancer, but experiencing the darkest day before moving into the light – you are in a lunar period rather than a solar period.

Tales of the Neptune Retrograde Station

Neptune, the planet of divine creativity and illusion, turned retrograde on June 16th. This is not unusual – the outer planets turn retrograde (appear to move backwards from our perspective on earth) every year. Before a planet changes direction its apparent motion slows to a standstill, just as a car does when making a U-turn.

When a planet is stationary, it captures our attention.  If that planet is affecting something in our chart, it yells at us to take notice.  It shines like a laser beam, a focused point of light streaming its planetary energies to Earth.  And right now, Neptune has the spotlight.

Neptune is an outer planet – its influence is transformational rather than personal.  It inspires us to experience a Self that lies beyond our individual personalities – to experience divinely inspired creativity, to merge with the Soul in meditation, to experience the Godhead in all of its myriad forms.  It also tempts us with fantasy and illusion, fooling us with subterfuge and undermining our ideals.

Neptune will remain retrograde until November 22nd.  During this time the Neptune influence becomes more profoundly personal.  You may feel like you are wading through a thick fog in your life, unable to make a clear decision.  You may find yourself succumbing to strange illnesses for which there are no names.  You may be more susceptible to lies and deception and less able to discriminate clearly.

This is a time to turn within with a greater focus on the inner world than the outer.  Meditation and rest is important during this time as our physical energy may be diminished, especially if Neptune is transiting planets in your own chart.  You may be more sensitive to psychic energies than other times, especially if you tend to be hyper-sensitive, so plan accordingly.

Life on Planet Earth can be more complicated when Neptune is retrograde since it can be difficult to see clearly with the eye of consciousness.  This is a time to build a reliance on the inner eye and the inner voice – the voice of spiritual guidance within that helps us to see everything more clearly.  There can be temptation under Neptune’s influence to attempt a shortcut to divinity through drugs and alcohol, but this is not advised, especially under a retrograde Neptune since the path to addiction is so much stronger now.

The same thinning of the membrane of Self that creates the challenging delusion of Neptune can also bring about tremendous spiritual growth and heightened creative inspiration.  Music, painting, writing – all creative projects will help to utilize this period for greater expansion and mastery.
