Retrogrades brings reversals in consumer confidence

When the outer planets appear to change direction from our perspective here on earth, we call that “retrograde.”  Jupiter, Chiron, Neptune, and Pluto are all retrograde now, and Uranus will turn retrograde tomorrow.

A report on consumer confidence in the US that is out today reveals that confidence of the average consumer dropped in May, driven largely by job fears.  Saturn changed direction in May – it had been retrograde since December of 2008.  In mid-May Saturn slowed down to a crawl in preparation for its retrograde turn, adding a reality check to the thrill ride of the conjunction of Jupiter to Neptune that was moving into position back in April.  The combination of Jupiter and Neptune can take us into Never-Neverland, the very place the Saturn seeks to keep us away from.

I was anticipating a significant reversal in the stock market when Uranus turned retrograde but I wasn’t sure which direction we would head in.  It appears that we might be headed into the negative territory in light of today’s news and the fact that Mercury is square to Saturn right now where there is a tendency for the mind (Mercury) to follow the negative course (Saturn).  It’s a good time to sit tight and not make any radical or sudden decisions until it’s obvious that the course is clear.

British MP caught studying astrology

While South Carolina Governor Sanford was accused of using taxpayer money to fund his trips to Argentina to see his lover, MP David Tredennick received payments for several hundred dollars worth of astrology software and lessons.

“He said that after his studies, he was inclined to believe there was some truth in the astrology and the influence of the planets on the earth and said the payments had been approved in advance by the Commons’ Fees Office.”

Wouldn’t it be great if more politicians got into this kind of trouble!

Michael Jackson dead at 50

Michael Jackson was found dead in his home this afternoon, and paramedics were unable to revive him on the way to the hospital.

We don’t know Michael’s time of birth, but his astrological chart (born August 29, 1958) reveals a conjunction of the Sun in Virgo to Pluto, a planetary combination that can be quite difficult.  There is a tremendous amount of power locked in this combination of the god of power and transformation (Pluto) and the Sun which represents the Self.  But there can also be a self-destructive tendency if the sheer force of the planetary dynamic isn’t handled well.  Often (but not always) there are abusive experiences from the past with Sun/Pluto and we know that Michael suffered greatly at the hands of his father.  The Virgo Sun desires perfection, and the presence of Pluto there makes that perfection impossible yet at the same time urgently necessary.

Venus is in Leo, revealing his love of performing and interacting with fans.  It conjuncts Uranus which incorporates the principle of rebellion and eccentricity into his relationships with others.  Venus/Uranus combinations sometimes (again – not always) denote androgynous relationships (the word “Uranian” is sometimes used to describe a transgendered person).  Chiron, representing wounding and healing, is in a challenging opposition formation to both Venus and Uranus which suggests a wound (Chiron) to his sense of attractiveness (Venus) and hence his addiction to plastic surgery.

The Venus/Uranus conjunction forms a challenging square to Mars in his chart, and Mars is also square to Chiron.  This is a complex planetary combination that denotes a great deal of inner conflict and difficulty expressing anger and setting defensive boundaries which is what Mars is all about.

In addition, Michael’s Moon is in Pisces, an extremely sensitive placement and one that generates tremendous creativity.  That tender Pisces Moon is squared by Saturn, the Celestial Taskmaster, suggesting a deep inner loneliness and sense of isolation that could not be broken through by legions of adoring fans.

There are many different statements in Michael’s chart that indicate he never felt that anything he did, or was, was good enough.  There is an enormous amount of stress in this chart, and planetary transits of both Saturn and Chiron over the past couple of years would have exacerbated that stress.if he wasn’t careful to balance his body /mind/spirit system.

It’s important to note that a birthchart like this did not doom Michael to a life of suffering.  Many people with extremely difficult birthcharts are able to integrate the conflicting factors within them and use the power of those combinations to improve their lives and maximize their potential.  It takes a conscious use of personal will and requires confronting one’s inner demons.  It appears that Michael instead used the surgeon’s knife and the pull of materialism to surround himself with things in an effort to heal his damaged inner child, rather than heal the actual wounded self within.

At about age 50, Chiron returns to its place in the birthchart and we call this the “Chiron Return.”  Because Chiron acts to balance the ecology of the physical, mental and spiritual bodies, when those systems are out of whack the body will produce a healing crisis of health problems to get our attention.  This was certainly the case for Michael Jackson.

Michael had had recurring back problems for years, something which is not uncommon for people with stressful Saturn aspects.  Saturn rules the skeletal system and when strongly placed in the chart there is a tendency towards stiffness and inflexibility in the nature which is reflected in the body.  Transits of Saturn in the sky to the birthchart will exacerbate these problems, and that certainly occurred for Michael as he underwent transits of Saturn over the past two years and ended up in a wheelchair.

At the time of Michael’s death transiting Mars was nearly exactly conjunct Michael’s natal Mars, setting off the challenging system in his chart that could have sparked a physical reaction.  At the same time Jupiter (along with Chiron and Neptune) was in a nearly exact trine to Jupiter in his natal chart.  Jupiter is the Great Liberator; the planet of abundance and good fortune.  When death occurs under a transit of Jupiter, it is a signal that the soul will be freed from the prison of the body.  While we mourn the tragedy of his death, the planets tell the story:  his death was a liberation from a life that was painful beyond measure.

Update: The Skyscript forum has a good discussion speculating about Michael Jackson’s time of birth.

The astrology of North Korea

Before you can have an accurate astrological profile, you must have an accurate date of birth.  In a mundane chart of a nation this gets a little tricky.  What is the moment of birth?  Is it the moment that the nation is announced?  Is it when the constitution is signed?  Ratified?  New leaders elected?

In my online research today I found several different dates used by astrologers for North Korea.  There is a chart for August 10, 1945, the date that the US War Department decided to partition the country at the 38th parallel.  There is a chart for September 10, 1948 which appears to have come originally from Nick Campion’s Book of World Horoscopes and is incorrect.

In my view, using the August 1945 date for North Korea is a bit like using the time of conception for a birthchart.  Information from the US State Department and several Korean websites confirm that the actual birthing of the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea (DPRK) was proclaimed by Kim Il Sung on September 9, 1948, and this is the day that is celebrated by the North Korean people as the founding anniversary.

Chiron in the comments section suggested that we must also look at the revision of the North Korean constitution, but additional research reveals that the constitution has been revised many times including in 1992 and 1998.  Because the government did not change, I’m inclined to disregard these charts.

I have not been able to find a suitable time for the North Korea chart so I will use noon as Robert Blaschke does in his excellent article for The Mountain Astrologer.

The Sun in the North Korea chart is in Virgo where it is in the final stage of a transit of Saturn.   Virgo has many positive attributes, but one of its negative qualities is a tendency towards miserliness and even deprivation and we have certainly seen this negative side with the starvation that occurs in that country. Virgo is an industrious sign that emphasizes humility and service rather than excellence and personal achievement, and this is certainly reflected in the fact that the North Korean government is run by the Korean Workers Party.

The Sun here is squared by Jupiter which can reveal a tendency towards arrogance and self-righteousness.  Jupiter is particularly powerful here in its own sign of Sagittarius and while we like to think of Jupiter in its role as “The Greater Benefic” it can denote a fanatical and dogmatic philosophy of government.  I like to say that Jupiter shows where we want to be god (Jupiter of course was King of the gods on Mt. Olympus), and with a powerful Jupiter in a challenging square to the Sun one’s self-aggrandizement can take dangerous proportions.

The Moon, showing where the heart of the people lies, is also in Sagittarius which reflects the need of the people to believe the best and retain an optimistic viewpoint.  The Moon is in a harmonious trine to Venus which in a mundane chart rules entertainment and the arts, and Sagittarius is associated with entertainment as well.  There is no doubt that the North Korean people are energized by artistic performances which are all controlled by the State.  The North Korean stadium that houses the enormously popular Mass Games holds 150,000 people and is reportedly the largest of its kind in the world.

Last year transiting Saturn began a conjunction to the Sun in the chart for North Korea, setting off the square to Jupiter in the chart as well.  North Korea desperately wants to be a  major player and gain the respect (Sun/Jupiter square) that it would like to deserve.  However, the dichotomy of the grandiose schemes of Sagittarian Jupiter in conflict with the small eye for details and the need for control of the Virgo Sun stands in its way.  Since last Fall the North Korean government has been amping up its missile tests and aggressive rhetoric, peaking in May with its nuclear missile test with progressed Mars (warfare) having just made a square to the Sun in the national chart (fighting for one’s identity).

Transiting Pluto has been squaring off against Uranus in the national chart as well, fomenting rebellion and calling for significant change.  That aspect completes this summer between August and October.

As Robert writes,

Sober astrologers will take no heart in the progressed Sun-Pluto square in the North Korean horoscope nearing exactitude. The nearly exact progressed trine of Mars and Pluto (2) is a further indication that the North now has the technology mastered in order to put a nuclear warhead onto a ballistic missile. Japan is in range of the nuclear capabilities of North Korea and with the progressed Mars in the 1950 war chart in the same degree as the progressed MC in the North Korean horoscope, one should not expect U.N. Security Council sanctions to do anything other than to prod this regime to pull the trigger on the South or to engage in naval warfare with the United States if interdiction of its vessels is attempted.

Mercury square Saturn, and Uranus prepares to retrograde

Mercury is moving into position today to form a square to Saturn tomorrow.  Mercury, the Winged Messenger, presides over not only messages and communication but also the way we process our experiences through our conscious awareness.  In Gemini, its own sign, it is particularly facile and communication typically flows without interruption.

Saturn will put the brakes on that easy flow for a few days.  Saturn, lord of restriction, karma and time, stops the presses while corrections are made.  Saturn demands that we apply focus and diligence to all of our communication projects.  This is not a time for easy promises; accountability is required for the next few days until Mercury has moved out of range of the square.

Meanwhile Uranus has slowed down to a standstill in preparation for its change of direction on July 2nd, and between now and then we will begin to see the force of change dominate the news to a greater extent than before.  Watch for destabilization of the financial markets and political structures in general.  Uranus is retrograding back for its last passage through Pisces before it moves into Aries next year, and in my view this demands a wakeup call.

Uranus is known as “The Awakener” and Pisces rules sleep, and while Uranus has been in Pisces (since 2003) the disruption (Uranus) from the longing for the unconscious (Pisces) has been powerful.  Uranus will move into Aries in 2010 and there will be no more opportunity for sleep.  This then is a good time to begin to prepare for Uranus entering Aries by completing the awakening process within our own lives.  Where are we stuck in subconscious reactions to situations?  Where do we limit ourselves by taking the easy road?  Uranus always asks the question:  Where in our lives can we be more authentic?  While Uranus is retrograde we will have a deeply personal opportunity to discover the answers to these questions.

An astrology chart for North Korea

There are several charts floating around for North Korea, and none of them are sourced.  Many astrologers use the August 10, 1945 date.  At midnight on August 10-11 member of the US War Department made the decision to divide Korea at the 38th parallel.

Jeff Jawer of Star IQ and Marjorie Orr use a chart for September 10, 1948.  Robert Blaschke uses a chart for midnight on September 9, 1948 and this appears to be the date that is celebrated by the DPRK.  However, it appears that the constitution for the Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea was actually signed on September 5 1948.

I’m continuing my research and have sent out some inquiries to Jeff, Marjorie and Robert, but if any of you have some good information please post a comment!

Song for Saturn in Virgo

In case the Chiron/Neptune conjunction is getting you down, here is some comic relief from Al Yankovic complete with lyrics.  I found this on the Astrology Weekly forum, and the poster there included the lyrics.  Some of the most accurate Saturn in Virgo lyrics include these pungent lines:

Think you’re really righteous? Think you’re pure in heart?

Well, I know I’m a million times as humble as thou art.

This is one of Al’s all-time classics. Unfortunately it can’t be embedded, so watch it here.

Liver transplant revealed for Steve Jobs

Read more about the astrological chart of Steve Jobs and his health issues here. Apple Inc. has just announced that Steve Jobs had a liver transplant about two months ago and is expected to be back at his desk at the end of June.

In my earlier article from January I described the correlation of a transit of Chiron over Jobs’ natal Saturn to his health issues.  Saturn in the birthchart reveals where we are likely to encounter challenges and limitation in our lives, and Saturn in Jobs’ birthchart is in a challenging square formation to Pluto. So the transit of Chiron to Saturn which began last year set off the inner dynamic in Jobs’ chart, requiring greater balance and a healing of inner psycho-emotional issues.

The liver transplant would have occurred at the time when Chiron made its first exact opposition to Pluto, as part of the triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune.  This is an important time for Jobs to create more balance in his life, and his chart reveals that he is much more of a head guy than a physical guy.

Chiron and Neptune will continue to affect him throughout the summer before backing off a bit as they retrograde off the point of Jobs’ natal Pluto.  However, the two will come around again next February as they unite for their exact conjunction and this will be a significant period for the health of Steve Jobs.

New Moon in Cancer

The past few days have been a particularly powerful time, with the Summer Solstice (with the Sun entering the tropical sign of Cancer) on Sunday and the New Moon yesterday occurring only a day apart.  This links the energy of the change of season that the Solstice brings to the sense of new beginnings of the Cancer New Moon.

Cancer of course is the sign of the family and nurturing those we love, but it also extends to our ancestors, our tribal affiliations, the inheritance of our clan.  Many of us have chosen our own clan and have created new family linkages, and these are extremely important to the development of humanity.  The more aware we become and as our wisdom becomes deeper and broader, the more we need to share it with others rather than stay comfortably protected in a womb of safety.

Cancer does represent the womb, and our desire to be safe from emotional and physical threats.  The New Moon yesterday afternoon was opposed by Pluto, and Pluto is still in opposition to the Sun.  Pluto threatens our safety and forces us to find what is true and powerful within us that we can depend on for our ultimate security.

At the same time, though, we have that beautiful conjunction of Mars to Venus which has been in force for a week or so and peaked on the day of the Solstice, combining the strength and force of Mars with the beauty and sensitivity of Venus, both in the sign of Taurus which is focused on security, peace, and comfort.  Strong Saturn was in an exact trine to both planets on the day of the Solstice, helping us to focus on our own inner strength and develop the resources of the body and soul.

These planetary energies are embedded in the chart of the Solstice and will be with us until the seasons turn again in September for the Equinox.

Rick Levine on Fate vs. Free Will

Thanks to Al for this link to a great video of Rick Levine, one of the founders of the great StarIQ site, who writes the sun sign column for Tarot.com and BeliefNet.  One thing I really like about Rick’s “horoscopes” is that he doesn’t pretend to make predictions for each Sun sign; instead he is looking at the planetary weather through the lens of each sign.

In this video Rick describes the relationship between astrology and particle wave theory in a way that makes it easy to understand.  He also discusses the fallacy of predictive astrology.   He reminds us that modern life is very different than life in earlier centuries, and that we have more free will because we have more “metaphysical mobility”

In this video, Rick completely and eloquently expresses my own view of the alchemical nature of the astrological consultation in helping us to transform our reality.  Rick makes a very logical case for the way in which we use the conscious mind to help to determine our fate, just as a sailor can use the force of the winds to direct a ship.

The video can’t be embedded, so follow this link to see it.
