Happy Beltane and Wesak 2010

A portion of this article is reposted from previous work

(A portion of this article is reprinted from an earlier post)

In ancient Celtic times, the wheel of the year was honored as the turning of the seasons. In the northern hemispheres, the winter solstice was the shortest day of the year and represented the return of the light, and the summer solstice, being the longest day of the year, was the Celtic fire festival. The equinoxes represented the points of balance when day and night were of equal length: the vernal equinox represented planting and fertility, and the autumnal equinox was the time of harvest. (Southern hemisphere civilizations had their own traditions of marking the seasons which obviously were very different than in the north.)

Halfway between these solar events are the “cross-quarter” days, the times of magic. Still celebrated today for their imaginal power, these were the periods when the Sun was at the midpoint of the fixed signs: Taurus, Scorpio, Leo and Aquarius. In the astrological wheel, the cardinal signs of initiation are followed by the fixed signs of stability, which are followed in turn by the mutable signs of adaptation. So we have cardinal Aries at the Vernal equinox (in tropical astrology), followed by fixed Taurus at the cross-quarter, which precedes mutable Gemini. Cancer begins the summer solstice, followed by Leo at the cross-quarter, which precedes Virgo, and so it goes around the wheel.

Each of these “triplicities” as they are called has a different energy. The cardinal signs demonstrate leadership, they initiate action, each in its own way according to its element (fire, water, earth and air). The fixed signs are stable, rooted, grounded. In many ways they are the most powerful because they don’t blow off steam like the cardinal signs, and they are not tempted to lose themselves through adaptability like hte mutable signs can. The ancient Celtic peoples found the mid-point of the fixed signs to be magical and called them the “Gates of Power.” The first “Gate of Power” in the year occurs in the mid-point of Taurus, which technically does not occur until May 5 this year when the Sun reaches 15 degrees Taurus.\.

The ancient Celts called the first cross-quarter festival Beltane, from the ancient word for “bright fire” which honored the god Bel, the god of solar light. On the eve of Beltane, bonfires were lit throughout the land to invoke protection for the crops and farm animals for the coming year. Beltane was a fertility festival, and marriage vows were often lifted for just one night. The dance around the Maypole is a clearly phallic symbol calling for fruitful fields and families.

In the middle ages, Mayday became a time for the craft guild to celebrate the patrons of their craft, and later trade societies and then unions celebrated Mayday as their holiday. May 1st later became the holiday of trade unions after a general strike and riot in Chicago resulted in the establishment of the eight hour workday which is now commemorated by International Workers Day on May 1.

The first Full Moon in May is also honored by some Buddhist traditions as the Wesak festival which celebrates either Buddha’s birth, death, or the time at which he became enlightened. Wesak is traditionally celebrated according to the Chinese lunar calendar as the Full Moon of the Fourth Month. However, the World Fellowship of Buddhists in 1950 passed a resolution requesting heads of governments to standardize the celebration in the Full Moon in the month of May which in 2010 is May 27.

Regardless of what we celebrate and how, both of these celebrations fall in the month of Taurus where the Earth can be celebrated as a living deity. Although Venus is the traditional ruler of Taurus, I personally look at Earth as a more appropriate ruler of Taurus, which is associated with the pleasures and riches of our planet. Beltane is the Celebration of Bel, the god of light, and Wesak is the festival of light. Let us this weekend honor the light that resides within us that shows us the way, the light that resides in those around us so that we may respect and honor every living being, and the light of the earth and the Sun that feeds and sustains us.

Mercury retrograde in my world

When Mercury is retrograde, I spend much of my time assuring clients that not everything will fall apart during these periods.  If problems do occur, though, it sure does make it easier to know that Mercury is retrograde and that these things are to be expected.

Mercury has only been retrograde for a few days, but already I’ve had the following problems:

  • A security breach on my credit card necessitated the cancellation of that card and issuance of a new one and the resulting need to change all of the various website that use the card.
  • My Quicken program told me that I needed to upgrade by April 30th or lose some of the functionality.  I already had the software but hadn’t installed it – when I went to install it I found that the problem downloading automatic windows updates that I had been ignoring since November would not permit the Quicken installation.  After 90 minutes on the help line they told me the only way to fix it was to reinstall the operating system.
  • The 30-minute job of setting up my new wireless printer took two hours and a hefty $255 bill because of hidden problems in my office network.
  • When I went to change the rental car reservation for our big trip coming up they told me OOPS!  It’s a good thing you called because you can’t pick up your car the day of your reservation, it’s a bank holiday.  So in that case Mercury Rx worked in my favor.  If I hadn’t had to change the trip, I wouldn’t have called to change the reservation and wouldn’t have found out until we couldn’t pick up the car!

This Mercury Retrograde period started out to be particularly difficult because it was in a challenging square formation to Mars for a few days.  The intensity should let up soon.

How is the retrograde treating you?

Consumer confidence rose in April – what’s next?

It’s not surprising that consumers breathed a collective sigh of relief in April as Saturn, planet of restriction and limitation, retrograded out of reach of the challenging square to Pluto that has been evoking intense feelings of despair since it began last fall.  In addition we’ve seen Jupiter, planet of expansion and confidence, in the sign of Pisces which can be idealistic and hopeful to the extreme.  (To give you an idea how this works, the radio show I did on Jupiter’s entry into Pisces was titled “Santa Claus in Dreamland.”)

Jupiter is moving ever closer to a conjunction with Uranus which will intensify the urge to break free of the desolation and restriction that has kept consumer spending at a minimum over the past six months.  But Saturn, that Celestial Taskmaster, will oppose the other two and enforce the rules and boundaries of common sense.  Anywhere that improvement in the economy is based on fantasy and delusion, Saturn will force us to come back to earth.  However, it is also true that any improvement that is based on a real recovery will continue unabated.

Uranus is the planet of surprise, and it will briefly dip its toes into Aries at the end of May.  By early June, Jupiter will have joined Uranus in Aries and I suspect the economy will be pushing full steam ahead throughout the world for a month or so, until Uranus turns retrograde in early July.

It’s probably too early to celebrate a recovery, particularly if that recovery is based on consumer spending alone.  A healthy recovery in a Pluto in Capricorn world depends upon a solid foundation, which means good job numbers and a healthy savings portfolio.

Scorpio Full Moon, April 27

The Scorpio Full Moon on April 28th features a number of powerful aspects and this lunar event is likely to carry a fair amount of intensity with it.  Scorpio is the sign of intensity and passion – under the Scorpio influence we reach deep into the underworld of emotions to where our feelings are raw and true.  This is no time for superficiality!

The Full Moon occurs when the Sun is opposite the Moon, and brings about the need for balance and integration. Here the centerpoint occurs between the peaceful harmony and stability of Taurus and the fiery emotional depth of Scorpio.  With any opposition, integration is required as the two opposite ends of the spectrum seek expression.  While we penetrate deep into the realm of feeling (Scorpio), we also require a sense of balance and serenity (Taurus) in order to gain the true power of this Full Moon.

This Full Moon features a “T-square” with a conjunction of Mercury to the Sun, suggesting that the mind is to be fully engaged at this time with reason and that understanding playing a key part in the dance.

A square of Mars to the Sun/Mercury conjunction on the one side, and the Scorpio Moon on the other, completes the T-square with a powerful burst of energy and aggression. Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio and this tight aspect to the lunation heightens the emotional intensity that is present at that time.

Under this Mars influence we may become aware of hidden causes of anger and frustration, and this is the time to recognize these feelings and bring them into our conscious awareness.

The opposition from Saturn to Uranus is still nearly exact, hinting that the aggression that lies at the heart of this Full Moon will stem from any imbalance that occurs between the restrictive principle (Saturn) and the principle of change (Uranus).

Fortunately, Pluto interacts harmoniously with the lunation to ensure that we process deeply anything that we need to learn at this time and that we find the inner courage and personal power that’s needed now.  This Full Moon energy will be strong for the next few days, and within the intensity is a power that can be harnessed and put to good use!

Some people just can’t handle the truth

…but this is taking it a little too far.

woman was sentenced to death Friday for murdering a fortuneteller and her college-age daughter after the soothsayer told her to get over a lost lover.Tanya Nelson, 45, of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., was sentenced for masterminding the stabbings of fortuneteller Ha “Jade” Smith, 52, and Anita Vo, 23, in 2005, Orange County prosecutors said.

Nelson hired fortuneteller Smith, known as Miss Ha in Orange County’s Vietnamese community, to get her ex-lover back. But when Smith told her to accept reality, she became upset and plotted to drive across the country to kill her, prosecutors said.

Smith and her daughter were stabbed as many as 10 times and their faces and hands were covered in white paint, which may have been an attempt to cover up evidence, prosecutors said.

Nelson lured her accomplice, Phillipe Zamora, 55, into the murder scheme by promising to fix him up with gay sex partners.

Uranus in Aries – the battle over gun control

It could be said that a keyword phrase for Uranus is:  ”Rules?  We don’t need no stinkin’ rules.”  Uranus is all about breaking the rules – fighting for independence, the right to make one’s own decisions and not be hampered by any external force.  Aries is the sign that is ruled by Mars, the god of war.  Mars rules over guns and all other forms of weaponry and other supplies needed for warfare.  So we can just imagine that when Uranus enters Aries in May, the battle over gun control will begin to seem very important.

We are already seeing evidence of the chafing of gun rights advocates under the current rules, even though open carry of handguns is only banned in three states.  Ironically, one of those is Texas – arguably the seat of the modern Wild West.  In any case, President Obama’s election in November of 2008, which coincided with the first phase of the opposition between Saturn (rules) and Uranus (no rules) resulted in a widespread shortage of ammunition amidst fears of a crackdown on gun rights which of course never materialized.

Uranus is in the last degrees of Pisces, on the cusp of Aries and recent pro-gun rallies presage what we can expect once Uranus fully enters Aries next month.  The fervor over gun rights is becoming so strong that many feel that the National Rifle Association doesn’t go far enough in protecting the rights of gun owners to carry weapons wherever and whenever they choose.

Some gun owners, saying that the National Rifle Association isn’t battling hard enough for their rights, are taking the fight into their own hands.
The 4.3 million-member NRA, one of the most powerful and well-funded lobbying groups in Washington, has for 35 years dominated the push to expand gun rights.
But its strategies aren’t aggressive or imaginative enough for some gun owners who want to openly carry holstered pistols in public places, or to exploit loopholes in state gun laws to purchase semi-automatic rifles.
They are coming together in smaller, loosely organized groups that recruit on the Internet and find inspiration from the tea party movement.
On Monday, several thousand gun owners plan to mount two protests—a march in Washington and an “open-carry” rally in Mount Vernon, Va.
“More and more the gun-rights movement is moving toward a stand-up-and-shout approach,” said Jeff Knox, director of the Firearms Coalition, a for-profit, loose-knit coalition of activists. “There’s a lot of general frustration with NRA not taking a hard enough line.”

Expect to see more of this, especially in early June as Jupiter joins Uranus in Aries, expanding and intensifying that revolutionary fervor.  And once Uranus and Pluto begin to face off more directly in 2011 the battles over control will begin in earnest.

Understanding the nature of the cycles can help to keep us from becoming fearful as we see the pattern unfold.  One interesting piece to all of this is the fact that political groups of all kinds are splintering, which is what we would expect when the planet of revolution enters the sign of personal will.  Whether it’s Islamic extremists or Teapartiers, it’s all about the individual testing the limits of freedom and liberty.

“Astro-scanning” to be used in Indian law school

“[A]strology will be used as a effective tool for personality development of law students. Ram Manohar Lohiya National Law University is about to prepare astrological profile (database) of students.

Why? Planet has [sic] a lot to do in making of your personality. With the help of astro scanning, we can identify position of planet of students. On the basis of findings, students would be advised to perform certain things, which will bring positive change in their personality, said Prof Balraj Chauhan, the vice chancellor.

After having successfully done the Psychological mapping of students, Law University has taken a leap in instilling X-factor among the aspiring lawyers. Chauhan said that university plans to club both the psychological mapping and astro scanning of the students. Both cannot be looked in isolation.

I love India. :)  Read more here…

The astrology of the Horizon oil rig explosion

oil rig explosion

Photo from cnn.com

A deepwater oil rig off the coats of Louisiana has burned for more than a day.  Eleven workers are missing and it is thought that over a million liters of crude oil could be released from the damaged rig every day.  The oil slick that has resulted is now eight miles long.  This calamity will destroy the delicate ecological balance of this area that is home to a variety of shellfish and fish including the rare bluefin tuna.

Ceres, the former asteroid that was elevated to dwarf planet status when it was reclassified with Pluto, is the planet that rules our relationship to the environment and the planet that we live on.  (For more information on Ceres listen to the first half of this recent podcast.)  Ceres is currently traveling in the early degrees of Capricorn, the sign of rules and structures and facing up to difficult realities.

Pluto is retrograde right now in Capricorn, and is currently just one degree from a conjunction to Ceres.  In its role as destroyer and rebuilder, Pluto often creates destruction as a precursor to regeneration, and in association with Ceres it is deeply connected to the myth of Persephone/Kore, the daughter of Demeter/Ceres who was abducted by Pluto and taken into the Underworld.

The elevation of Ceres has brought about a new global awareness about the needs for environmental balance.  Perhaps this explosion (Pluto) will facilitate even greater awareness about our tenuous ecological balance (Ceres).

Update:  astrologer Jamie Funk reminds me that Uranus is in an exact quincunx to Neptune as it opposes Saturn.  The quincunx is a minor aspect but when it forms exactly it creates a pressure that has no way to release.

Saturn’s hexagon simulated in lab

Thanks to Rich for this link.

When scientists monitoring the Voyager Mission first discovered a hexagon on Saturn (here’s an article I wrote on the subject back in 2007), it was an astonishing event.  Now researchers in Oxford appear to have duplicated this phenomenon in the lab:

The Oxford researchers made a model of Saturn’s North Pole. A slowly-spinning cylinder of water represented Saturn’s atmosphere, and a small, rapidly-spinning ring represented a jet stream. They added some fluorescent green dye, and got a pretty well-defined hexagon.

By playing with the speed of the ring, the researchers could make nearly any shape that they wanted. The greater the difference in speed between the water and the ring, the fewer sides the polygon had. The shape seems to be bound by eddies that slowly orbit and confine the inner ring into the polygon.

It’s an interesting coincidence that scientists (Uranus) claim to have duplicated this phenomenon on Saturn just as Uranus in the sky faces off in an opposition against Saturn!
