About Retrogrades

I’m in the process of migrating old articles to the blog platform, here’s a chance to catch up on some oldies but goodies.  The study of astrology looks at the motion of the planets in the solar system from our perspective here on earth, and because of anomalies in the orbits of the planets, occasionally during their travels around the sun they appear to move backwards. As a planet turns retrograde, it appears to slow down gradually until it appears to be almost standing still. This is called “making a […]

Planetary Illuminations for July 2013

My Skywatch article, Planetary Illuminations for 2013, is now posted and you can read it in its entirety here.  If you are on my mailing list you will soon receive your abridged version which includes translation into English from the original astrologese.  If you aren’t on my mailing list you can sign up in the sidebar.  Meanwhile, here is the introduction to give you an overview for the month: As July begins, Mercury is in retrograde motion. This is a time when our attention is drawn back to the past in […]

Mercury retrograde, June 26th through July 20th 2013

17944365_s

Mercury turned retrograde this morning and will appear to travel backwards from our perspective on earth for about three weeks.  Even people who don’t believe in astrology have come to believe in Mercury retrograde periods which can often bring communication snafus and equipment breakdowns.  Mercury rules (among other things) the mind, mental activity, interpersonal communication, short trips, and communication equipment. Retrograde periods serve an important purpose – they encourage us to slow down, to look back over our lives and re-evaluate our path.  It can be frustrating to feel that […]

Mercury retrograde, and a Virgo Full Moon: February 2013

LeftRightBrain2

Mercury turns retrograde today (February 23) and it’s time to go over the things we’ve done in the past in order to help perfect our future. Mercury is in Pisces now where it tends to be more adaptable and flexible and doesn’t mind reversing itself in order to improve the flow of our lives so this retrograde period may not be as difficult as some others. Mercury turns retrograde for three weeks four times a year, so it is not a rare event.  I like to think of retrograde periods […]

The Frankenstorm and the US Election

Sandy

First let me say that after living in North Carolina for many years I always take the hysteria over hurricane predictions with a grain of salt.  Predictive models have improved over the years, but like human behavior, nature has a way of being unpredictable. That said, it appears fairly certain that the big storm heading towards the Atlantic coast over the next couple of days will bring widespread power outages and communication breakdowns.  As I wrote this summer: In addition, Mercury stations retrograde on the day of the election which […]

Mercury retrograde roundup: Wild times

Mercury rx

I knew this would be a tough Mercury Retrograde period when I wrote this post.  With Mercury and Uranus turning retrograde on the same day, we were bound to be in for some surprising (Uranus) twists of fate and weird events and we are certainly seeing that in some corners of the world, especially in the highly charged electrical atmosphere of yesterday’s Full Moon in Aquarius. A software glitch cost Knight Capital, a trading firm, £290M in trading losses when the automated system sold all of the stocks the company […]

Planetary news this week: expect intensity

Storm Brewing by  Mikey Studios.  Rebellious Uranus in a challenging square to intensely transformational Pluto. Mercury and Uranus, the two planets of the mind, have just turned retrograde.  A coronal mass ejection from the Sun has hit the Earth’s magnetic field, causing alterations to the Earth’s magnetosphere and a spike in the planetary K index of geomagnetic activity (to a 6 at the time of this writing). But wait, there’s more! Jupiter is moving into an awkward aspect (quincunx) to Pluto this week.  This  is not a major aspect but […]

Mercury and Uranus turn retrograde in tandem

sky god

You might want to read about the concept of “higher octave planets” if you missed that post before reading this one. Uranus will turn retrograde early in the morning on the 14th EDT (late morning GMT) and Mercury will turn retrograde late in the evening EDT on the 15th (early morning on the 16th GMT). Planets of course don’t really change direction, but astrology is person-centered. We are the center of our own universe, and that is how we observe the planets astrologically.  Sometimes the movement of the planets appears to […]

To get your own subscription, which includes a translation into simple English from the original astrologese, please sign up in the side bar or on my website here. Meanwhile, here is the introduction to get you started: As July begins, Venus has just turned direct and is moving forward again after her short retrograde period. The Transit of Venus is behind us, as is the first exact formation of the Uranus/Pluto square which actually began last year and will continue through 2014. You can read more about the square formation […]

Communication systems go haywire: Mercury conjunct Uranus

by Lynn Hayes Mercury represents communication and the transmission of energy, and Uranus represents radical change, surprise, and innovation.  When these two planets get together, as they do nearly every year because of Mercury’s orbit pattern, things can get a little wonky. When the conjunction of Mercury to Uranus coincides with a Mercury retrograde period as we just saw happen, things can get quite wonky indeed.  Some of you may be familiar with the story of Mike Daisey whose one-man show about the Apple factory in China was adapted for an […]
